Joe, Just a suggestion. PB Blaster or Kroil Oil or Aero Kroil for penetrating oils. In my 53 years, I've found they work the best. I gave up on WD-40 years ago. And yes, the guy wanted beer money, indeed. At least you can save it and make it run great again, like you always do.
Thats because WD40 is a (water displacer) "WD" lol not penetrating oil

I remembered my first 2 stroke KX rebuild. I found out the hard way that the power valve shaft nut was reverse threaded 😅

I am always amazed on how easily you get the bikes down from your truck. Your legs are super strong.
If i had to unload bikes by stepping off the tailgate like that....i think my hips would break and id fall backwards and the bike land on top of me hahaha

Just a quick note today Joe. Remember that WD40 is not a lubricant, but is a solvent. it helps break down grease and oil based substances, but you need a penatrating oil for getting in and losing bolts, along with heat.. Thanks for the content.

WD-40 is basically diesel fuel with some additives or without. It's not an oil for sure.
Wd40 was made as a water displacement for the inside of rockets. But it IS NOT a lubricant. Its great for dissolving rust and penetrating into bolts and threads, but it not a lubricant. Its a penetrating oil.

I just learned, synthetic motor oil, works so good that it will not allow piston rings to seat properly, during brake-in. I like your videos.
NASCAR found out about how with synthetic oil in the differential on the cars, the fears would not seat and wear in l. So they would use regular gear oil to seat the gears in by running a few laps, then changing the oil to synthetic.😊
Also, synthetic oil will push thru Cork gaskets.@@steveperyer4850

Look at when you took the shift spring off. The spring was on backwards. Steering bearings? What about rear shock? Measure the cylinder bore.

Good substance, good price. This one looks like it's going to be an allround winner. When you consider the age of the bike she's in great shape.
Very interesting alternative to car mechanics. I once bought a brand new Cagiva ‘Super City’, like the start of that James Bond film but red not camouflaged. It never did change gear properly from new, showing neutral at traffic lights but sneakily still in gear so would embarrassingly stall. It looked the part but I sold it.
35:13 That was classic. Spraying penetrant on the bolts AFTER almost breaking them trying to loosen.
? spraying before you break em loose you have to wait, he was spraying after so the threads would make removal easier.

This channel is a big help for me Joe. I just bought an 89 kx125 last week with water pump issue. It’s convenient watching you work on the same bike as me simultaneously.
Had a kx 85 in the early 90's it ripped for a 125 especialy after new rings were fitted, looked the same as yours, great little bike, i then had a 86 kx 250 after, and that was a propper ripper too, then a 86 cr500 scary beast but loved it, best bike ever, wish i still had it 😭, love your videos Joe, 👍🏻

The wear on the piston is indicative of a partial 4-corner seizure from warming up too quickly. That’s what happens when the expansion of metals heat up too fast, and therefor, unevenly. Warming up slowly, gives the heat time to dissipate from hot spots and heat up more evenly overall.
Just realized the coolant impeller was trashed. That’ll do it too obviously!
DONT REV THE PISS OUT OF A COLD 2 stroke! In fact when fresh start up DONT rev it at all! lol
Joe the broken water pump shaft cooked piston ring. Good catch on shift spring! Head gasket failure for sure. Don’t forget headstock bearings.

Do the Taryl Fixes All "heat and quench" trick on that power valve shaft. I had that same exact bike back in the late 80s. That was a fun little bike!! Great find for $400. Great video too. That cylinder would be a perfect example of something where a parts washer would be handy. If I knew where to send them, I'd ship you a ball pene hammer set. Love your channel. Keep em coming!!
Great video! I notice something though. On all your bikes, even newer ones, you check the VIN numbers. If you had a title you could avoid a potentially bad situation with a sketchy guy. Like the guy who wouldn’t let you kick the bike over. He could say, without a title, you stole the bike, and have to give him the bike and he’ll keep your money. The videos have really helped me learn more about my machine!

Ideal bike for you to work on. I think you should think about how much changing the silencer and even the piston will add to the value of the bike - it ran quite well as it was and a new ring and light hone and polish of piston will bring up the compression to a reasonable level.
After overheating and seeing how hard it was to get the piston out I would check to make sure the cylinder is still round.
Over heating by the previous owner or by this nitwit knowingly riding it around and cold revving the shit out of it with no coolant

This was one of my recent likes…this was a job to see: I found it so interesting all the different corrosion issues and yet it still ran.
Love the sound of the 2 stroke. Brings me back to the old air cooled days.

Don't want to cold size the ring right away either. Just like reving a chainsaw immediately.

Whenever I have a stuck head, I hit it like you did but ill take recoil rope and stuff it through sparkplug hole and GENTLY turn over engine to help push off the head.. give it a try next time Joe. Sweet video brother

He doesn't clean them before working on them.
You have this 4stroke habbit of taking 2t heads off for no reason and it shouldn't be advised as good practice. If you have a leaky head or you need to clean it up from proken ring fragments, OK, otherwise why break a good seal for no reason what so ever?
You do this over and over again, in so many bikes and I'can't remember one that it was necessary.
Just take the cyl off with the head in tact.
Check cylinder for out of roundness. Oddly worn ring makes think that. Heck of a find. Great bikes in the day.
hello! I liked this kawasaki. I liked its color and this vintage design! I will be happy to watch the 2nd part with the assembly! The gaps in the intake valve are not a significant malfunction. under pressure, the tabs are pressed against the body

what do you do with these bikes when you're done? flip them? have you thought about doing partial restorations so you can present a better finished product? probably not what you intended starting this channel but its definitely something I'd pay to see
hes been doing this for 10+ years already he fixes them to "bare minimum" and sells them he has absolutely NO intent in doing even "partial" restorations! just budget buys & budget builds
no wonder why he makes it look so easy. seems like he's picking up a bike every couple days. I'm just selfish and would like to see a polished bike without having to do any of the work😁
Watched virtually all your videos and been a biker (in UK) for 56 years however, if you jet washed the bikes before starting to repair them you wouldn’t need to wear gloves 😂

Man that bike brings back some of the best times in my life. I had the 86 kx 250 and man did i have fun on that old bike. Thank you for the video. It really brought back some good memories.
This bike seems hobbled by not enough travel on the suspension. And no power. Plus not shifting.
Sorry to say it but intake manifold is 150$ in usa and 300$ if you live in europe. 1986-1987 were rare and parts are rare to. Good luck with it. I got a 86 aswell that i am restoring. It is probably worth to put the money in to yours if you get good deals. For a good running one that looks okay you get 800-1250$ and in nice condition 1500-2200$

I knew that intake was not gonna be as cheap as he thought. I imagine someone has remade them by now? We used Alumilite epoxies and made some for Honda ATC's, even epoxied new magnets in the old KXT Tecate flywheels. That was a problem back in 84/85.
Hey that's a sweet bike!! Easy fix with the shifter spring in wrong. You will the top end sorted out, and muffler for it and the other odds and ends. Like you said for about $300 or so. And have a pretty fast Kawasaki. Love it!!!
Runs and sounds good, clean up power valve, new rings, good to go. Great bargain bike.. easy peasy!!

New at your channel, it appears to me that bike riders are no different than those that drive cars. Put the key in it and face forward..put gas in with no pm at all. I had a BSA 650 rocket 3 that really ran great until i layed it down and busted my leg and side cover...i was a rider for a short time. Decided that bikes were not for me. I am anxious to see you get the BSA 500 back running again. Good channel.
A concoction of 50% Acetone and 50% Automatic Transmission Fluid makes a pretty good rusted hardware loostener. I've used it quite a bit.
This right here!!!! This was tested against the popular ones I.E. WD40, Kroil, PB Blaster etc. (P.B. and Kroil are top tier) but ATF/Acetone mix bested them all!!
Just don't get it on any paint you want to keep.
Well not bad Joe. I probably say that water pump went out a while ago and it overheated a bunch of times the way them bolts and power valves rusted out. Put some heat on that power shaft and tap it with a punch. I get it out and get the rust off all that and replace them seals. You need a vapor blaster to help you revive them parts for you without tearing them up. But all in all you gonna make out one way or another with it... 😉😉😉
My ‘78 DT Yamaha 250 had a ring that broke in 2 pieces because it was so thin opposite of the gap. Quick hone and new ring and it ran great.
I had the same bike in the 90s, now I got a 85 kx250, it's definitely worth rebuilding in my opinion
Hone jug, clean power valves, new piston and ring/s, new again
My OCD noticed that the drive chain split link retaining clip has been fitted backwards at 27m11s in. You might want to change that round so the open end points away from the direction of chain travel..
Get a clutch side crank seal while your there.
Nothing better than Joe working on an old 2 stroke dirt bike.
Hey Joe, Don't forget the headset bearings... also, that rear shock looks like it's riding pretty low.
I had an old Kawasaki like that. It was beat. So slow with low compression but always ran. It's something about them!! I was about 14 years old

This is where a parts washer would be so handy - just dump the entire top end in and let it do its thing, and it would save so much time cleaning things up. And boy, does that thing need cleaning up.

I really wonder what Joe does with the fluids he drains out of vehicles. Since it appears he just mixes the coolant and oil in the same pan it doesn't seem like they could be recycled normally. I find that to be a bit of a bummer.
If the impeller wasn't working while it was running that would cause the piston to partially sieze causing the damage and causing the rings to wear also
PB Blaster is the best penetration lubricant to get 99% broke loose! Restored a 115yr old coal burning parlor heater. I used pb blaster and was able to remove every flat head screw and square nut on the heater except one and it was located right next to the fire pot and it had basically had gotten hot enough to bond the two pieces together, had to use a angle grinder to remove it!
The ol' 50/50 "sauce" is really the best for those rusty bolts. ATF and Acetone.
Push the shift shaft hard towards the clutch and shift it , make sure the spring doesnt dis-engage from the pin, if it does you'll have to shim it internally
the spring was installed backwards. It doesn't need shimmed, its fixed.

540PS is the first part of the Wiseco part number. That cylinder has been sleeved which is good.
You need to fix the Throtle cable at the carb as well
Needs a new back shock it looks painful to hit bumps.
You would be surprised what just replacing the ring would do to make that run really good, but a new piston comes with rings anyways but people in a tight budget can easily get away with just a ring replacement for like 40 bucks.
33:31 you gotta fix that carb cable at the carb too! that cable is not supposed to be like that
Motion pro makes a awesome piston pin remover w/lots of varieties of size vsffdpin out through the is pins to screw on so it will slide the piston. I have the knock off brown or bronze colored one and it’s awesome
While your at it Soak the power valve with Mystery 710 Hammer on that while your hammering the Head off

I thought that clutch basket looked pretty off. The space just wasn't right where the springs and bolts were tightened at. Come to find out 2each springs were missing anyway.
Id check the side to side runout on the crank , especially as much as the rings were wore .

That rear shock is a pogo stick. Been watching for years, never seen Joe do a set of fork seals
It smokes so bad plus low on oil I would replace right side crank seal
I learned some stuff about a 2-stroke in Thai video. I want to get into one but I’ll have to know how they work. Not familiar with power valves and reads.

Joe don't take a hammer to the spanner, use another ring spanner on the open end as a "lever" for it.
Yes, this is how u should buy thing's. Not with intent of getting it no matter what the seller is selling for or the Bullsh*t story they say "Just need's carb cleaned". Because you are teaching not only how to rebuild stuff but how to get stuff at reasonable price with repair cost in mind. Not to just blindly, pay full wholesale price and have way to much into something. You have to alway's remember your running a *Business. And follower's New at buying and repairing are watching and following "Your Format" you have 423k subscriber's and other's just watching.That's why I have been tough on u in past, I alway's see the whole picture/angle
You need to start putting a feel Gauge on the crank it look to loose for my stands
.015 to .035 for side to play and no up and down.
