The dealer charged $200 to do nothing but some extra damage to the wiring. Nice job once again figuring things out and repairing this one at very little cost 😊
well, It needs new switchunits, new wiring harness, new sensor/solenoid, new tires, 12 hours of work (incl today's diagnostics). So before a dealer can get this back to the customer, the customer is in for another 2500. And then the unit is still rusty, rough and stil has a dodgy powersteering pump.
The unit is only worth saving if you don't count hours and don't have a shop-fee.
@@vogel2280 A dealer isn’t going to try and fix parts, but is going to replace with all new. The dealer did the right thing for the customer and themselves because even if they fixed everything that was obviously bad this machine would spend time coming back for repairs. The customer saved money for sure.
What caused all the corrosion
Can you spray the everything down with some type of anti corrosion spray
This bike must have lived on a ocean beach salt contamination wash the bike dawn dish soap
@@kenmazza1766 It did have a lot of corrosion. I keep my machines for 10-15 years and mainly run in a lot of muddy water and never have rust like that. I do wash the machine regularly though. When I see neglect like the rust, I wonder if it was serviced routinely.
I have to say these are my favorite videos. Watching you diagnose these electrical issues
Dealership didnt want to mess with it is why they told the PO that. They tell customers that to try and get them to buy new.
They tell customer that because they want it for nothing.
Facts! they want you to buy a brand new one and spend all your money. Scam
100% right. If I did decide to buy another one I would go somewhere else.
You don't know that!
@@kurtyoung6769sounds like something that someone who works at a stealership would say
Wow Joe it’s awesome how you can take a machine even the dealer doesn’t want to bother with and get it running in no time, this one was an electrical nightmare. It’s also amazing how people just don’t care for their machines at all, a little maintenance goes a long way.
Honest answer is they just want to service new models.
Keep pushing the easy future headaches out the door.
@@adamgroulx12 No the dealerships don't want to pay techs anymore. Yes there are plenty of parts cannon mechanics. However the ones that can fix this won't get paid to do so. Flat rate has come to the Power Sports world. The problem is if you want to eat you push these aside and try to get fast at common jobs. If not you will be struggling to make it. The dealership owners are making the money not the techs. IF there is a dealer actually paying the techs that is RARE. I can assure you if I saw this come in I would be like WTF I am going to loose my ass on this. Look at all the issues that popped up along the way sure he fixed it but in flat rate you make jack on this work.
It really wasn't an "electrical nightmare". He solved the problem in a few minutes.
@@douglasr.c.5622 sure thing troll
@@justinh6495Even in the automotive job rate world, electrical diagnosis/repair is still billed hourly, As it can be a wild goose chase.
You're one of the best problem solvers and improving your skills everyday. The camera and audio is also getting better and enjoyable to watch, this type of video is the perfect opportunity to wear a headlamp or place one in the hard to see places of the atv. Just alittle more light will expose the hidden areas for exposure. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing. These videos help us all learn and repair with more confidence.

The difference between you and the dealership is you are a real mechanic and love a good challenge, they are nothing but lazy code readers and have no idea where to start without a code and a step by step manual on how to repair a problem.
Remember, dealers sell new and don't like to repair
Did you see the rust? If someone tried to give this to me I wouldn’t take it. I wouldn’t trust anything on it the way it has been allowed to rust away. A cherry machine like this might get you $5,000.
@@Chris_at_Homethe owner was plowing with salt. Salt ruins everything. Watch South Main Auto and he fixes cars that rot away because of a Communist Government and mountains of salt on the roads. For ecological reasons this should never be allowed.
So a perfect diy project. Electrical harness rework, battery, tires and its running well with a few switches and sensors replaced. Hardly a throwaway to me.@Chris_at_Home
Just like a car dealership. For any real mechanic work, wheel bearings, fuel system, electrical, tranny etc. I go to my local guy who is fantastic.
I had a dealer tell me once that they will only replace components, they will not tear anything apart to repair. Never again.
Got yourself a gem there. A little rust cleanup and some new switches and this will be a keeper.
I agree wire wheel and wire brush and some rust inhibitor if it's more surface rust and not terribly bad.
My first and only Polaris, was a 2010 Ranger 500, purchased off the showroom floor, took it for a test drive around a lot and it died. Should have been my sign to say don't get it, but I got it anyway because the salesman said that it was just because it had been sitting a while… Took it home and for I can't remember how long it was, it would just randomly start running bad till it died. And you would crank it right back up and it would run normal. Took it to the dealer close to 10 times, at the end they told me basically not to bring it back they were done with it. I ended up selling it. They never did fix the problem, and I took it to two different dealers. I would never purchase another Polaris product. But that one seems really nice, and it's really awesome how you got it to work again, if you were the mechanic at the dealership back then you probably could've fixed the Ranger, lol. Love the sound of a V twin ATV. I had a couple of Can-Am's, an 800 and a 1000 Outlander
EXCELLENT VIDEO (I learn something every time I watch one)!
I like and own only air cooled units no automatic transmissions, no power steering, no four wheel drive, no hydraulics, SIMPLE!
I go anywhere I want and have not had ANY major break downs.
KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID is my motto.
💯
Too much technology on this 4 wheelers now days in prefer to stay 2000 s and it seems to me that you're a better mechanic than the ones in the dealership, Great video by the way Blessings Joe🙏🙏🙏
You are number one when it comes to working on ATVs on RUclips
First time I ever saw you accidentally fire it up . Exellent
I laughed out loud when it fired up! Great work Joe!
I slam my beer every time Joe says “Interesting”.Joe crushed it today..
or "perfect"
For myself, It's like when Ivan from Pine Hollow Diagnostics says "Boom"!.
Loser.
It's not worth saving to them. At their hour charges, you can eat up the cost of the bike just diagnosing it. So worth it for you, not to the average consumer paying for diagnostic time.
100%
The power steering likely isn’t bad. The Pitman Shaft which is the shaft on the lower side of the power steering where the tie rods mount has a bearing that fits into the top of the differential. That bearing is likely rusted solid. The bearing is not serviceable. The Pitman needs changed. It’s quite a job.
For your power issue and I’m just starting to watch the video, there’s a circuit breaker on the left side of the vehicle as you sit on it, which requires you to take the front body plastic off to see it. They’re notorious for corrosion as it is without the assistance of the Salt.
P.S. I've been watching your videos for years. I always appreciate how you don't split up one dirtbike/atv video into like 5 videos filled with a whole bunch of nonsense. Big respect man. It's super enjoyable just watching you run thru everything from the basics to tearing apart an engine. People can learn alot from you. I remember when you only had a few thousand subs. I took a hiatus for a bit because we had a baby girl. But it just gives me shiz tons of content to binge watch. Good stuff man 🤝🏻
Shows what the dealership knows 😂 great work there Joe 👍.

We have liftoff!! No way that thing instantly fired up! Lights camera action!! Let's Go!!!
That's some amazing troubleshooting with no wiring diagram and no dealer training. Great job.
Dude, you’re an inspiration! Your patience, diagnostic skills and sense of humor is awesome! I thoroughly enjoy watching/learning from your videos. Thank you Joe!!
So what ive learned from all of your videos is. Dealers have no business trying to repair Atv's and UTVs. No one has any trouble shooting skills. If they cant hook up a computer to it they cant fix it. But if your a true mechanic with troubleshooting skills your my hero. Honestly, id buy any atv from you and where can i find another mechanic like you here in northeast georgia. A good steam pressure washing, black pain on suspension
It's ALIVE! Now you just have to fix all the rusty and corrosive bits and it should be good to go! :)
The diagnostic information in these videos is priceless. Thanks a bunch. I love the ATV videos.
South Main Auto meets ATVs! love it
Also, when Ivan w/ Pine Hollow Diagnostics pulls out the Pico scope.
Going to have to watch more of these videos. South Main Auto is great.
Worth sanding, grinding the rust and covering with good paint, so it lasts. Pretty great deal, being able to find and resolve issues, that were cheap fixes. Very nice.
Joe is better than the dealers mechanic. Well done man great work...
The dealers mechanic is probably an incompetent family member who is also in charge of keeping the toilet paper stocked up for the bathroom. Never take your bike to that stealer for repairs.
@@Nine_883 Too funny😂😅
Im no mechanic by no means. Wish I learned how to fix things like this. Amazing. Comes in handy. Very intrigued by how you are able to figure out the problem and resolve the issues
Nice one Joe.You need to clean and treat the corrosion on the chassis and other structural components ASAP, like yesterday.
Absolutely superb chap , diagnostic skills are becoming legendary. I've been watching you for quite some time, and it's a joy to watch your enthusiasm still when you crack the problem. I always look forward to your vids and the process you go through.
I have watched most of your videos and am full of admiration for your ability to use logic in order to solve the issues. Well done from a Brit who enjoyed tinkering. I'm 77 and get my enjoyment now from watching U tube. Hugh UK
I just rebuilt one of these. The power steering on it will lock up sometimes when riding making it impossible to turn. Very sketchy when you are trying to turn and then can't. Hopefully yours doesn't do that to you while your riding at speed. Great video! Glad you got it going.
Hey Joe, I’ve seen you re-do paintwork on boats before, so I know you’re not against doing it… but have you ever set about a major de-rust & re-paint of a bike or quad’s chassis? As you say, this quad is now fully working, and is worth saving, but underneath she’s in a pretty sorry state.
I should think you’re the man when it comes to doing a complete strip down and being able to put it all together again! We’ve all seen your skills at editing, so I’m sure the resulting video would be interesting… I’d certainly watch it (anyone else up for it?).
Cheers 👍❤️😎✅
As his newest Polaris, he may want to keep it in the stable for a bit. I definitely would watch a de-rust and paint/restoration on the undercarriage video.

Your the best problem solver on yt in my opinion, I been following you since you and your brother were fixing stuff in your parents garage
It was about time you had a easy fix on a four wheeler for a change. What a surprise.👍
dont know that i would call all these electrical issues an "easy fix" all that diagnostic work is a pita
It's a joy to watch a man who knows his shit you are very good at what you do my friend. Outstanding.
On my 2016 and 2017 you have to pull the hand brake and turn the ignition to start it. If you don’t pull the brake it won’t crank.
My 1998 was like that as well if I remember correctly.
Dealerships want you to buy new, and they do not want to fix an older rig if they don’t have to. Maybe they have competent mechanics that could, who knows. Glad you got this deal and figured out the issue (fairly quickly I might add! ) great video and awesome work as always! Best of luck on the next project!
Where did you learn all the info needed to solve those electrical problems. You display a real talent for deductive reasoning.
just follow the wires it aint rocket science but an electrician will tell you it is so he can triple his bill.
Voltage tester does most of the work for you if you just know how to use it and have a little bit of common sense
@@bodine2537After looking at corrosion on first connector, and looking at the rest of rust on everything it was apparent what needed to be done. Go thru wiring, connectors, relays, and clean/replace. A few switches and sensors to replace along with the battery and you are in business. It should not take a ton of diagnosis time since problem was very obvious. Only question to me is steering, what was corroded? What needed to be taken apart and serviced?
@@jimw6991 most likely the same thing, maybe got water inside the steering motor housing and corroded up the inside and wires going to it as well, they make a spray cleaner and a protector spray for battery terminals that we use on our semi truck batteries that works great, it’ll stop corrosion from forming ever, be a good idea to take the cleaner then protectant all over every wire connection on this atv
Great work and really happy you got a somewhat "easy" fix this time!
Cheers from Sweden
Electrical Gremlins are not my thing. Good job diagnosing the problems.
Mannn it’s 2:42am and ive done got hooked into this video 😂 it’s amazing how this guy figures all this out! I’m actually learning a lot and I’m NOT EVEN CLOSE to being a mechanic! Love the content man!
I think I might have taken it for free but $1200 was a mercy gift from you😆
The biggest problem with it is being a Polaris.
@@feelnrite that’s one problem that can’t be fixed!
That lovely upper midwestern winter climate causes more controlled vehicle obsolescence than one can shake a stick at. Great video, Joe, you always seem to be able to figure out the problem children! Thanks man!
Nice to see Vinny came out to check out to see if you was doing the work ok 😂
Great job , always happy to see you bringing these ATV 's back from the dead.
The voltage drops quickly because you kept the high beam throughout your troubleshootings.
Obviously none of us are there but it's always funny watching you push everything around instead of just backing your trailer up to your garage
It's not funny when you misjudge and hit the garage or door..........
I agree about not hitting your building, however, you can still get close enough to make things easier.
I actually have this exact same model in a 2011 flavor. It's my first quad and I can say that is has been quite reliable. It's fun to watch you roaming around in areas I've been myself. I added a winch, larger wheels / tires, a 2 up seat and n LED light bar. Nice job using tour head to bring it back.
it's crazy to me that schools don't teach basic diagnosing/reading of schematics/electronic circuit explanations in many shop classes in high schools. Then again, basic deduction is also not taught in many schools!
They did in the 80s and 90s when I was in school now they teach them boys can be girls and girls can be boys
Only woke crap is taught in schools now. Nothing useful.
@@NewTestamentDoc you first off have to want to need the expertise than a school can teach it just ask them and well itl happen 😉
@@thorjoseph I can't image any shop class in my high school that wouldn't have benefitted from basic diagnosis/deductive repair or production evaluation. We were required it for electronics class to build/repair circuits. Auto Shop class required it for basic auto diagnosis. Woodworkers used it, too.

I have a 2014 Polaris Sportsman and I never have learned so much in one video about the bike..
Thank you
More Polaris videos would be great!
it used to be that the dealer's mechanics were the best. But I don't think so anymore. That is across the board in all mechanical repairs.
great when Joe posts
I have the same machine. Love it. I have had it since 2012. Been a great reliable quad. Love the power steering. I also have a 660 grizzly and that think beats me up when riding it. It was neat seeing you work on my quad. I learned a lot about mine in the process.
The rust is a pain to work on. Who knew oxidation could be so scary 😅
clearly not the previous owner that gave zero F's lol
My first thought was, of course it’s not worth fixing, but look over here we have a brand new one to go. You happened along at just the right time, right place.
One thing I’ve never understood is why you park way the hell out in the driveway and kill yourself getting something into the garage, when you can back up to it.
Or open the garage door after already smoking out the room
Im sure the dealership could have figured out all the issues eventually, but they have to know when to call it quits before they dump a ton of mechanics hours and parts into it.
@@fletcherjacobs3688I’ve noticed in some videos he prefers to open the other garage door after smoking out the room, it may have to do with the lighting while he’s filming.
I was watching you test the voltage at those fuses, and it dawned on me, you are trying to probe down on the legs of the fuse, but did you know those little silver dots on the top of the fuse are test points? They are actually part of the legs, that might make it easier for you in the future. Or am I not seeing something correctly, and I'm in error? Ok, I'll be quiet now and keep watching, you struck gold man! Love it👍🏻
Ok, watched the while thing, congratulations man, what a score! We both know it can always go either way, but you crossed every bridge with ease!!!
I have a tip for you. When I run into wires that won't tin, I found that using paste soldering flux, (ACE or HD) the good stuff, I dip the wire into the paste cold, then apply the hot iron, and flux core solder... It's never failed me.
Awesome find!
Very enjoyable watching you problem solve and get these 'bargain' machines up and running . You know your stuff!
The metal pins on top of the fuses are so you can probe them without digging into the legs and over-stressing them, I love your troubleshooting, nice job!.
You have MASTERED your ability to fix these machines, very impressive!
Loved your straight fwd diagnostic on this repair. Obviously willing to do more thorough work than the dealership
With your know how. You make it look easy. No doubt in my mind at dealership hourly rate it would have been costly. Its machines like this that helps you off set the ones you buy and have to do a complete teardown. Thanks for the great content. I see you took it to the 2 vintage headquarters to test it out.
That's so good to get a machine that is in good shape with some elbow grease and some trouble shooting. I bought a sportsman new and had to sell it in 2005 . Because I moved to Hollywood California for a job. So I miss it and I enjoyed watching you fix it after setting for a very long time. I have so many different machines that people have left out to just set and like they say just needs some TLC and just use it and things will loosen up and free up and I'm sure you'll find more things that are corroded. But it a good ride to put $ into. Thanks Dale
I’ve been watching for a while now on my tv. You are a genius!! It’s good to see a young man with a good work ethic.
Can't believe how you get these thing running...hands down brother
I very much enjoy your diagnostic method…. Simple and effective!!! I do have a Question…..
1) Why do you backprobe at the base of the fuse to test voltage at the fuse box, and not just use the test point on the top post on the fuse itself?
2) percussive maintenance On the starter was brilliant!
3) just a note…. Rather than use a piece of wire to backprobe or to test internal connectors…. You can use a straight pin, but better is drapery pin, bend it straight, all the way down to the point, and make a t-handle from the dull end at the top like a handle…. It makes it a lot easier!!!
Love your channel man!!!
I wondered that myself on the fuse's there is a test point on the back for a reason right?
@@ChewyKnight yes, but he has forgotten more about small engine repair than I will ever know, so there must be a reason….
