    Paper was my big mistake when starting watercolor. I got a few good brushes and professional pigments and got mediocre paper because I hated wasting expensive paper with practice (or bad Ugh) paintings...in a word, I was cheap and consequently always disappointed with the results. Recently, I have been using Arches pads, blocks and some big sheets and what a difference. I just have to resign myself that good paper is simply going to have to be part of the expenses involved with the hobby I have come to love.
    I could sit all day and watch (and try to duplicate) your videos. Also, I am left-handed and your videographer (your husband!) is very good!!!!

    Great tips Harriet thanks. When I do a watercolour I really like I scan it onto my computer. When I need a greeting card, I can print out the picture on lower quality paper, ie 190gsm, which the printer can cope with. I have a print which still looks like the original for my card but I still have my original too.

    I am commenting 12/28/2023 … maybe 5 weeks into my watercolor journey . I’ve been going back and forth between the beginner videos and then trying some of the scenes/objects. This video is particularly timely for me … enough time to have made mistakes 2-5 (I DID go full out on paint and paper from the start! Off to practice 😊

    I too am binge watching 😆. I’m using Strathmore cold press 140 lbs watercolour paper but I’m having an awful time with it warping when I do any kind of wash on it .... very frustrating because I’ve started using it for greeting cards and I really don’t like the way it warps and won’t stick flat on the card front

    • @deWintonPaperCo
      @deWintonPaperCo  3 года назад +2

      Well you can google how to stretch your paper and you go through a process of wetting it and stretching it which will prevent warping. I also saw someone ironing their work on a low heat which I wouldn’t personally recommend but it was an interesting idea

    I use 300 gm/140lb weight watercolor paper. I notice when I go to lay down water it soaks up into the paper before I have a chance to bring in my color, so I end up having to lay water down 2 or 3 times before enough water stays on the paper to do the wet on wet technique. I don't understand why mine does that.

    • @deWintonPaperCo
      @deWintonPaperCo  3 года назад +1

      There can be a number of variables: the temperature and humidity where you are. But also the speed at which you’re painting. Water does seep in so you should experiment with how fast you add paint once you’ve wet the page x

      @@sandrapudoff no, I don't have any 100% cotton paper.

  • @FuriedHearts

    I always tell beginners.... better quality PAPER is way more important than the quality of the paint. I think it is better to invest in better paper than better paint. 100% cotton is pretty much the only paper (in my opinion) that behaves properly with watercolor and it isn't cheap sadly.
    I think student paints + 100% cotton is a better duo than professional paint + cheap paper. Just my opinion
