Emily, videos like this are why you are gaining such wide recognition as one of the best! In watercolor, it seems like there are so many subtle, but crucial details that make all the difference. The paper is the easiest to get right- you just have to find what works for you and avoid the temptation to get too thrifty. The other points you shared are things the artist just has to learn through experience, and once you see it happen from your own hand, you get it. That's the great thing about this channel- the advice is all based on hands-on experience and years of study and practice!

Every single one of these points is absolutely spot on, the biggest ones for me are going too dark too soon and being impatient 🥺❤

Thank you Emily for another wonderful, informative video. Yes, I'm guilty of a lot of them! Hey, I want to paint that foal! Did you do a tutorial on it? I joined Watercolor Mastery a few days ago and I'm SO hooked. You are what I've needed from the start of my journey that is over 20 years old. I would paint a few weeks and then quit for four or more years. This mastery is keeping me active and loving every minute of it. Well, most of it lol!

Oh my! I’m sooo guilty of all the ten things that I shouldn’t do when painting with watercolor! Thank you so much for the tips. I think these tips should be implanted in my brain so every time I make that mistake, there’s a buzz that would stop me from going further!! (You know like those buzzers that go off when the tennis player serves a faulty hit?😊

Do you have any advice for getting yourself motivated to work on a project?
I sometimes have a hard time getting focused on working on projects at home outside of class. I take my adhd meds as I need, have the proper setup, omit any and all possible distractions, but sometimes I feel like something is missing or needs to change to allow myself to lose myself in the project to finish it on time for a deadline and I am not too sure what that could be. Obviously this is relevant to me atm because my friend commissioned me something that he needs by a specific date because it's going to be a present for someone else and I have a hard time getting fully comfortable to get lost in the process and I don't know why. I still have a few weeks and already got a good portion done because I'd rather not procrastinate it, but just because I have time doesn't mean I'm okay with struggling to work on it at home in the mean time.

Can i ask, i have a small travel hairdryer as well as an art heat tool .. couldn’t tell which I preferred to dry with. It appears you have a heat tool.? Do you prefer that to dryer? Just wondering which is best. Thanks!

I retired and was getting bored even though I'm quite busy taking care of my house and my Farm. But I was drinking too much so I went to AA. Then I started thinking I'd like to try my hand at art to take up some of my free time and help my boredom. Some of my friends think that art is only for women. But who says you can't hunt and fish and still sketch and do watercolors? I find it very relaxing.

Thank you for sharing! Print patient and letting it dry took me (is still taking me😬) so long to learn! So many of the demo videos I had been watching edited out the drying time and didn’t talk about it, so all I would see was a continuous painting sessions and couldn’t understand what I was doing differently

I'm a member of your site and I would LOVE to see a video (or two or three or ten!) on how to paint different types of trees in the landscape! I have been plein air painting and I just can't stop making my trees look like solid lollipops. I don't understand how to make variety in my trees' colors and shadows but still make them look natural. It's really frustrating.

Great video! I struggle with all of these, lol. But one thing I think I need to learn is the amount of water in my brush, in combination with the amount of water on the paper
Also, how much do you dab your brush on the paper towel? Do you completely rinse your brush in between colors?

Yep, I've made all of these mistakes in the short time I've been painting, but I'm slowly learning from them. One more mistake that I need to work on is testing my color or value on a scrap piece of paper before I dab it on my painting. Too many times I think I've got it right and then freak out when the paint hits the paper and it's the wrong color or too dark. Thanks for your help

Impatience..overwork and muddy colors. Sometimes I go outdoors to sketch and painting and the sun hitting white paper changes everything.. do you ever do plein air work or landscape or waterscape work?? You could coment on? Or do you work from your photos? Love your work and videos. ❤😊 from Canada.

Something that i se a lot is today many people forget to pay attention to values and focus more on colors. Light and a shadows is what takes a painting from boring flat to 3D that pops up! Maybe you could show the huge difference in quality by adding shadows
