    I agree, there's no such thing as muddy colours. But it's important to know why some reds and blues don't mix vibrant purples etc. I've never thought about it in terms of mixing colours that are closer to each other on the colour wheel though, so thanks for little tip!

    EMILY!!! My eyes have been opened. I have been struggling with color mixing and color temperature and this video has finally helped me understand. You explain it so nicely, especially for someone who is trying to teach herself. Thank you sooo much, now it makes sense. :)

    This is the best explanation of the color wheel, color theory I've seen. Esp getting vibrant vs earthy colors. Thank you for imparting some valuable wisdom.

    Very good and informative video. The only thing where you would not see too much difference, if you would use single benzimida yellow for both mixing green and orange tones. But of course, if you have already two different yellows on the palttte, then you should use them as explained in the video. I would also recommend to use phtalo green PG36 for mixes, that would give you much wider range to mix greens and turqoise shades. But other colors are very good choice for mixes. phtalo blue, ultramarine, quinaqridone magenta and sarlet/ pyrrole red.

      Yes to Phthalo green! Great addition to any palette.

    So well explained. And thanks for reclaiming the earthy colors.... The term muddy colors always makes me feel odd, especially as a brown-skinned person!

    I'm sitting here giggling about being mentioned by my favorite watercolor teacher (with visuals even LOL). :-) Thank you, Emily, for what you did here, dividing the color wheel into thirds instead of halves. I was taught to divide the wheel into halves, with the warm colors (with yellow-orange in the middle) on one half and the cool colors (with blue in the middle) on the other half. Dividing it into thirds makes the warm blue vs cool blue a LOT easier to understand.

    Hello Emily , are you sure about the "jungle green " at 8:05 ? maybe it's an editing issue , the green you've shown looks more like a PB29 + PY3 mix . I've taken out my brush and paint to double check . 😁

      I did the test and it gives that color if you use more pthalo bue than yellow. With ultramarine blue I get a warmer mossier green.

    • @EmilyOlsonArt
      @EmilyOlsonArt  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yep, I'm sure! You can get different looks by adjusting the ratio of the two colors. This mix had more Phthalo, less yellow.

    Colours are only muddy if you're trying to mix a bright. They all have their place when you need them.

    Which mix do you use to do a orange like cadmium orange hue ? I end it up doing more magenta ish oranges them yellow vibrant oranges that I love more especially when I try do the color with magenta or red than use the fabric orange!!
    I think this could be a series of doing or mixing colors, and have one of neutral mix like beiges , titanium buff cousins , I try but I didn't get the correct mix !!!😭😭

    Thank you for making this so clear. For the longest time I couldn't understand why my purples were so dull when I wanted a pure purple! But yes, the earthy mixes are beautiful, too and definitely needed.
