Wow, Carson, that's a GREAT version of this old traditional song. For folks who are generally unfamiliar with it, 'Shady Grove' has been around for over 100 years, and is likely a derivation of an even older traditional song called 'Matty Groves'. Although of no documented origin, the song likely began in Appalachia. Doc Watson helped to popularize it, and it's been recorded by dozens and dozens of artists, including Jerry Garcia.
I came on to say how the tune is like Matty Groves. One of my favourite Fairport Convention songs.
I think that matty groves actual took the tune from this song, its older! (Or at least the tune is)

I've been listening to this song for longer than Carson has been alive (not a discredit to his youth, but areluctant acknowledgement of my age). Always great. The guitar part is always what caught my attention. It's a fun little song to pick through, with a bunch of acoustic momentum. For some reason, after all these years, this is the first time I actually heard the words and the story. WOW! Thanks! 😊

One of the first "Folk Songs" I learned to play and sing way back in the early 60"s - and I guess I've heard sung and played in dozens of very different styles. Yours is outstanding. Nice one, Carson !

I don't think I've heard this song before. Really nice! One of the things I love most about Carson is that he sings so clearly that I can usually catch all the words. (Not true for everyone.)
I'm one of those people. Especially with new pop music, half of the time I don't hear/understand what is being sang and I have to look up the lyrics. I'm convinced that is one of the reasons I prefer instrumental music. With Carson and similar artists, it is a joy to listen to.

As a European I learned the english language through songs ( started with Cat Steven's) , I'm my whole life in love with meaningful songs, ballads , gospels, traditionals...... This song I didn't know, Carsons voice and playing straight touched my heartstrings.

The Jerry Garcia and David Grisman version of this song is one of my mom's and my favorites. It reminds us of my now passed grandfather who used to play folk songs like this all the time. Fantastic work with this one! Absolutely love it!

Carson, YOU can become a "lead" player with relative ease if you want it! You already have the rhythm skills and you know your way around the fret-board. Just visit the wood-shed a little more often! (I need to take my own advice, lol!)
