A sad song for sure. Before deployment in WWII my grandfather had to move from his home in Detroit to NYC. He loved it in NYC and vowed to return permanently after the war. He did, and spent the rest of his life there, mostly in an artist loft on 23rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenue. I visited him on 23rd Street often in the 70s, and I can understand why Croce wrote the song. Back in the 70s, standard behaviour in NYC was just to ignore strangers and to avoid eye contact, it felt odd for sure, and I only experienced this sort of behaviour in NYC and not other places on the east coast such as Boston or Philly. It felt lonely when I was out on the streets of the Big Apple all by myself in the 70s. That said, I loved going there as I mostly spent time with my grandfather and he would take me around. I’ll never forget him taking me to the top of one of the towers of the World Trade Center. Really a great guy and great place. RIP RD: Artist, Sculptor, WWII vet.
Jim was a friend of my grandmother back in Upper Darby, Pa. He was my mother's teacher. My grandmother is going home to see her old friend Jim soon. She was a wreck when he died. She never got to say goodbye. So, she can say hello instead.

Jim Croce songs tell a story in each of these masterpieces. Ive memorized all the lines, played his music by guitar like there was no tomorrow, yet i want more of his music.. so until that tragic day when that plane crashed and crushed my heart and soul to kingdom come, i can only thank you Carson for bringing back to life the KING OF FOLK SONGS❤️❤️❤️
Listened to Jim Croce a lot growing up. Still do. I worked in Juneau AK in the early 80s and changed New York to Juneau in my head. Perfect fit.

*Carson* -- Jim Croce had an album cut in (of course) the 70s, an harmonically sophisticated song, written by Maury Muehleisen, who was Croce's hotshot lead guitarist on all those Croce tunes... this song is called "Salon and Saloon," and is - I think - a minor masterpiece. Your voice and your guitar skills would just slay this one, and I'd love to hear you do it. Maybe give it a listen if you aren't familiar with it. :-)

I too am a Jim Croce fan. He was at his zenith and passed when I was in my prime living in upstate NY. My first favorite JIm Croce song, which I learned from vinyl 40 years ago, is These Dreams. P.S.
