  • I'm aware there are a few versions of Ramey singing Zaccaria's "Oh, chi piange" on YT already but it's always fascinating to watch him onstage.
    1995 Paris
    Conductor Pinchas Steinberg
    Directed by Robert Carsen

I agree...and many people as result do not understand how tough work it requires.

Nabucco, Atilla, Macbeth, Falstaff, Riggoletto, Simon Bocanegra, Posa; Verdi sure loved his basses and baritones. he wrote more leads for them than for tenors (not to mention better music). Verdi and Rossini are the two composers who perhaps more than all the others knew how to capture the richness of lower voices.

Agreed. Rossini, in addition to capturing the richness of lower voices, asked a great deal of the basses who sang roles in many of his operas, and that included having very flexible and agile voices. Some of the Rossini operas with coloratura bass roles weren't sung much for decades, with most of these interpretations being sung without the ornamentation that Rossini wrote. In the 1980s there was a big Rossini revival led by mezzo-soprano, Marilyn Horne, who had the flexibility and agility necessary to sing the Rossini coloratura mezzo roles. She has said she couldn't have done it without Samuel Ramey, as he had the flexibility and agility in his voice needed to sing the coloratura bass roles. They both shone in productions of Semiramide and L'Italiana in Algeri, among others.

      ahahahahahahahah !
avevo visto 3 recite dal vivo.
      una delusione enorme .

I think it's only an F2. verdi wrote for very high basses. verdi knew the voices he wrote for well and demanded only within the natural limits of the singers meant to sing his music (a basso cantante cannot be expected to project C2 above heavy orchestration)
