Thank you so much for this video. I have been riding a carver around my neighborhood for years. I feel like I am pretty good at it. However, after watching this video and trying what you are saying here...... I now realize why my surfing has gone downhill the last few years. I have been riding my carver all wrong. All wrong! I have formed some real bad habits around generating speed and flowing. I have not been throwing my weight around and using my arms and springing my legs up and down. I spent 20 minutes today flowing around my garage using this technique. Huge difference in the feel of the board and much more smooth. I could imagine myself on the face of a wave. This video is really gold for me. I can't thank you enough.

You do make it look so easy. Compressing and extending on a surf skate requires considerable balance and that takes several months of slow gentle practise.
I am quite comfortable on a skateboard, but I would disagree that it takes several months. once people can comfortably stand upon a board and move forward, they're more than capable of extending and compressing. it just requires the correct approach. some flat ground "patterning" can help as well

cx are the new version of carver trucks. they're my preferred trucks and feel quite good in ramp. I find them way less "squirrely" than smoothstar trucks.
My PERSONAL preference is carver. for beginner surfers or those new to skating, I would recommend a carver. Smoothstars are great if that is someone's preference for personal style and feel, but they can be difficult for beginners.

Dude, what brand/model/length of board is that? Looks to be 9.5"-10" wide. And around 32" long, but that doesn't mean I'm right. Im just a 60+ skater looking to upgrade my ride. Oh, PooMan... Its just a slalom pump, useful for not having to push up slight inclines and gettting speed going downhill. I was doing it in a contest back in '77, pushed too hard, had the board dona 360 under my front foot and got the second-fastest time of the day... Surf skating is a great time to really pay attention to your arm movements. Also, it's way easier to get footage of yourself than surfing, really helps to check whether your style looks the way it feels, you could be poo stancing and not even know it.
Good old pumping I want to a skate camp and they had us play tag in the parking lot and park but you were only allowed to pump and kick turn to no pushing allowed
Thanks for the advice! I surf regular but surf skate goofy, and everything I practice does not transform well. Should I try to change my surf skate stance? I’ve tried before but it’s really difficult so kinda gave up 😢
this is a question only you can answer. if you want to put in the time to change your stance, then it would be more of a direct carryover for practice. if you can skate goofy, but have it make sense in your brain to switch over to regular in the surf, then perhaps stick with what you're doing. the learning process of learning to skate natural could probably be helpful in terms of motor learning and skill acquisition,.
Hey Cris, just came across your video and found it super helpful. I've got a pintail cruiser which I love, I'm comfortable with pumping and generating speed but struggle a bit to maintain balance when I do a turn at a higher speed. Any idea why is this happening? Thanks!
long boards take longer to turn since they're so long... a long rail. so gotta turn and hold, and you'll see heavier back foot pressures on longboard turns so they can use the fin as a fulcrum
Hey man, Just came across this video. The compression you're talking about in speed generation is like pumping rollers in snowboarding. Great video. Down with PooMan!
I've only snowboarded once, for a period of 5 days. it was SO fun. hoping to do a japan trip in the next year or so. in that period of 5 days, we had 2 days of fresh powder. big arcing turns in fresh powder felt VERY similar to surfing.
Very helpful advice and I been practicing heaps but I gotta question. I surf natural and can't skate that way, feels very comfortable to skate goofy. You reckon I'll still get the benefits from it?
Best surf skate vid iv ever seen thank you!! And absolutely love the frothy vibes! Where can we get the full tutorial/surf skate training program? Im sold :)
the full surfskate program will be ready in a few weeks, and available in the Surf Athlete app. you can download the app for free and get some access to workouts and stretch routines. then, once you buy the surfskate program (when available), you'll be able to access the program in the app or on desktop.

@surfstrenghtcoach. what trucks would you recommend more CX or C7 and what are the reasons for that? thanks so much, your info and way of explaining are top notch! Carver and other opinions say their C7 is is the closest to surfing but i would like to know why you consider the CX better for surf training.

I've heard quite a few things saying the SmoothStar is a much better representation of surfing than the Carver. Should I still be practicing on my Carver? What are your thoughts on this?
I don't find the "looseness" of smoothstars to be very beneficial in my opinion, and see it create some bad habits in people. I much prefer carvers, especially for ramps. it comes down to personal preference, but I do think the turning radius sales point of many surf skateboards isn't really a valid point
So happy to see this video. I have no trouble admitting that i have poo man stance both in skateboarding and surfing. Still learning. I think trying to compensate for not knowing how to balance yet on the boards makes me go into that poop man stance
Great video! I have a question and maybe it is the case for other people... I am regular in surf but goofy in skate. Idk why I can't get my skate in regular... Impossible... Does anyone have the same problem? Am I then improving my surf skate the reverse for my actual surf skills?
yep, you're not the only one. I come across this fairly often nowadays. it's up to you if you want to teach yourself how to skate regular. if not, it's simply up to you and your brain to determine if practicing skating (goofy) will carry over to your surfing
my preference in terms of "feel" is a carver with CX trucks. all the other companies that sell boards/trucks with a high light of a tighter pivot point, I don't actually think that's a good thing.
@@SurfStrengthCoach Thanks Man. I am looking at the same one you have in the video, CX Raw 31.25" Knox Quill Surfskate Complete 2020. ill probably go with this one.
Love this Chris. What’s your view on The Carveboard vs Carvers? At similar price points, it seems that The Carveboard is more purpose driven towards direct specificity, whereas the Carvers encompass similar training uses with a broader, more utilitarian capacity. What are your thoughts? Mahalo 🤙🏾
This is super helpful! do you think you can do more of these? I just started skateboarding (in my 30s) and surf skate style feels like my jam and it appears more safe than skating verts. I want to use this training to eventually try surfing.
I'll do more when the creative lightning strikes, for sure. I've got a bottom turn one in the next few weeks. If you really dig the surf skate contnet, you should check out the Surf Skate program in my app! surfstrengthcoach.com/program/surf-skate/
What I think really helps to simulate riding a wave on these things on flat ground is to ride in an arc! Never ride it straight. To me it feels like the centrifugal force of the arc simulates the force of the wave. When you pump while riding in an arc (for ease of visualization just think of riding in a giant circle) it feels like this. The turn that tightens the radius of the arc is the bottom turn and feels "heavier" because the centrifugal force of the turn combines with the centrifugal force of the arc. The turn that loosens the radius of the arc is the top turn and feels "lighter" because the centrifugal force of the turn subtracts from the centrifugal force of the arc. Just be careful and don't slide out on a "bottom turn" when you start pumping really aggressively.
Ive been skating for 10 years, I got my first carver recently and was psyched to try it out I immediately ate pavement trying to push like a skateboard I got the hang of it now thanks to your video but man im poo maning hard.
Curious to know what other surfskate brands you've tried and why, as a surfer, you prefer Carver? Thanks, Chris! Very much appreciate your content. -Steve
I personally prefer the feel of Carvers, but find that for the intermediate / beginner spectrum of surfers, the "looseness" of smoothstar and other brands can allow room for a lot of bad habits for those first trying out surfskates. they wiggle rather than learn how to use a rail. if someone knows what they're doing, those looser brands can be great. I've tried waterborne truck adapters and found those to be quite good. I hear Globe brand surf skates are good
@@SurfStrengthCoach Interesting. So the fact that Carver trucks are tighter is actually a good thing, because they keep you more aligned with proper form?
@@SurfskateLove I don't think "tighter" is the correct word, as you can loosed or tigthen any type of truck. it's just that they have a different mechanical turning radius due to truck design compared to smoothstars. it comes down to preference, but we've seen better consistency with beginner / lower intermediate surfers using Carvers
@@SurfStrengthCoach Yes, I have both Smoothstar and Carver boards. I guess I'm just looking for a more detailed reason WHY you prefer Carver over Smoothstar (or any other brand)? I ask because most surfers I've seen giving reviews of surfskates swear by Smoothstar. But you are clearly an amazing surfer and surfskater, so you're as credible as any of them. Is it the way you ride? How you want the board to perform? Does a tighter carver C7 feel more like your surfing than the looser Smoothstar? Do you feel more stable on one over the other? Does one over the other incentivize proper surf form? If so, why? Sorry for pressing, man. 🤣 I just really want to understand so I know what I'm doing. Much appreciated! P.S. I'm about halfway through your program and I love it. Will definitely be promoting it in videos. Well done, and thank you!
Im surfing and snowboarding regular, but on the skateboard I feel way more confortable with a goofy stance. What’s your though on this? Should I commit to one for all boards?

Question ! Poo pose !! Can i turn my longboard like the surfingboard? I want to short turn
long boards take longer to turn since they're so long... a long rail. so gotta turn and hold, and you'll see heavier back foot pressures on longboard turns so they can use the fin as a fulcrum
Dude! Thanks to you and my new Carver i just got, I will be surfing by next year!!!! you're a great teacher!!!
Surf Strength Coach whats the difference between surfing and snowboarding? Could you make a viedeo?
Very helpful advice and I been practicing heaps but I gotta question. I surf natural and can't skate that way, feels very comfortable to skate goofy. You reckon I'll still get the benefits from it?
Most useful vid i found about it! I had studied cerebellar movement patterns and everything you said is true.
Please make more vids about surfskate!
I don't have a Carver. Only popsicle shape
Man you are a ray of light from the clouds. Your clear message will be carved on my carver. 😉thank you from the "never again poo man"
Dude, you are the Bruce Lee of surfing!
What type of skateboard do you recommend for surf skate practice?✨🙏🏼.....did you say a carver? Excuse my ignorance
yep, i'm a fan of the Carver
cx trucks...
@@SurfStrengthCoach C7 works for me
@@SurfStrengthCoach YOU CANT SKATE FOR shit do a video on BOWL SKATING which ACTUALLY REPLICATES A WAVE!!! NOT A FOOTBATH CARVING DORK POSER!!!!
@@SurfStrengthCoach Hey thanks heaps for the info!!! I'll be sure to download the app and purchase the surf-skate section! Can't wait, keep the good stuff coming 👏
@@charliessurfschoolsurf6027 hahahahaha sucker punch WONT give you experience or ability only a hole in ya wallet
I've just got a surf skate, so I can now change from my poo stance into a Michael Jackson Thriller dance one! Seriously though, fantastic advice, thanks.
Hahahahaha
Literally why I bought one. Snowboarding can create bad surf habits if your bindings are setup duck.
Brilliant teaching points, best i've seen.
Great content I like to do reverse lunges on the bosu ball for pumping and my stabilization.
Your rants are ace, great film thank you
@surfstrenghtcoach. what trucks would you recommend more CX or C7 and what are the reasons for that? thanks so much, your info and way of explaining are top notch!
Carver and other opinions say their C7 is is the closest to surfing but i would like to know why you consider the CX better for surf training.
When are you guys doing another coaching trip!?
We do coaching trips all year long... every year. Although this year was a bit funny. 2021 is mostly booked with guests we had to move from this year to next. But we are releasing more trips / dates soon. If you want to get notified and have a chance of making a trip, I’d suggest you sign up for the notification list. We book out about a year + in advance. You can sign up here for notifications. You’ll see we don’t have 2021 trips listed yet, because we’re still allocating all our 2020 guests to 21’ trips before we release them to the public.
Thank goodness I watched this. I took a video of myself after this and realized I am 100% poo man. Time to start over!
Is that a CX?
Great video! I have a question and maybe it is the case for other people... I am regular in surf but goofy in skate. Idk why I can't get my skate in regular... Impossible... Does anyone have the same problem? Am I then improving my surf skate the reverse for my actual surf skills?
yep, you're not the only one. I come across this fairly often nowadays. it's up to you if you want to teach yourself how to skate regular. if not, it's simply up to you and your brain to determine if practicing skating (goofy) will carry over to your surfing
what kind of surf skate is the best for beginners ? company / size . i am 5ft 11" , weight 165 lbs
my preference in terms of "feel" is a carver with CX trucks. all the other companies that sell boards/trucks with a high light of a tighter pivot point, I don't actually think that's a good thing.
@@SurfStrengthCoach Thanks Man. I am looking at the same one you have in the video, CX Raw 31.25" Knox Quill Surfskate Complete 2020. ill probably go with this one.
@@roybenaim635 the deck doesn't matter so much as the trucks. as long as the deck can accommodate your stance, you're good!
OMG! thanks so much for the info demonstrations and time you put into this video !! amazing !! so helpful
you're welcome!
Love this Chris. What’s your view on The Carveboard vs Carvers? At similar price points, it seems that The Carveboard is more purpose driven towards direct specificity, whereas the Carvers encompass similar training uses with a broader, more utilitarian capacity. What are your thoughts? Mahalo 🤙🏾
Summary
1. Compression & Extension
2. Twist
@@SurfStrengthCoach Thanks! I totally will! ^_^
Just be careful and don't slide out on a "bottom turn" when you start pumping really aggressively.
best thing to do is not ride flat ground! start surfing some ramps so you can actually interact with centrifugal forces.
Is this the same as long distance pumping? Looks similar.
I don't know what long distance pumping is..? can you elaborate
Got ma New Surfskate, nice Tutorial, Thanks Dude!
waiting for full carver Surfskates program
Where you got that moroccan sweet capuchon
Ive been skating for 10 years, I got my first carver recently and was psyched to try it out I immediately ate pavement trying to push like a skateboard I got the hang of it now thanks to your video but man im poo maning hard.
Just bought the program, Chris! Excited to go through it.
"loosen"... sorry for mispelling
Well done, and thank you!
did you ever turn this into a surfskate course on your app? i would be into that.
what durometer wheel are you using?
Awesome video, really helpful! what truck system have you got on that Carver?
CX trucks and an older taylor knox model deck
Im surfing and snowboarding regular, but on the skateboard I feel way more confortable with a goofy stance. What’s your though on this? Should I commit to one for all boards?
learn both so you can ride switch
