I posted this before and many many locals jumped all over me, clearly because I hit a nerve and they know what I wrote is true. I could care less what they think. If TMT is stopped, protesters celebrate on the mountain and pule for a few days a week maybe then they drive down (On the road provided by the Fake State) turn left on Saddle Road, go down the hill, turn right or left on Komohana St. Get home, get a shower. Then what? Back to EXACTLY the same. And Hawaii has lost the most amazing piece of astronomical equipment the planet / human species could have had and for what? For people to drive back into Hilo and go home to more of the same. They get back to Hilo, have some Pau Hana, some potlucks, green bottles and poke, hug, laugh, tears of joy, celebrate. Then what? THEN WHAT? Sovereignty is still as far off as ever, unobtainable and as confusing as ever. Is the state that they resent going to be in the mood to have dialogue with protesters. Not a chance.

Thank you for sharing this video. Very informative. I am following this news from Cali. I stand with the people of Hawaii and of course, I stand with Mauna Kea! For those who support this telescope, perhaps you might do some further research, on the matter. This issue is about about many dif. things, one being the basic right's of the people of Hawaii, their land, it's about respecting nature, the eco system, the people's water source and their voices. Mauna Kea is a sacred space. For those who don't understand what "sacred" means please research that too. It's easy to make blanketed statements, but unless you really understand the whole issue, it's best to learn more first. It's a very complex issue, one which deserves respect, I feel.

Spot on (to some degree) Much to it. Here's something to consider. TMT is enhancing educational opportunities that are unobtainable in other parts of the world.
It is difficult to imagine that Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop would not support an initiative like the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). Her legacy’s support reiterates the importance of blending Hawaiian culture and western science; which is already coexisting on Mauna Kea. It should not be seen as either / or, as it provides educational opportunities for our keiki (Children) and scientific discovery for the world. Education, of which Pauahi cherished, offers people hope and opportunity for our Hawaiian future.TMT has NOTHING to do with Hawaiian Sovereignty. It is an easy target for those feeling left out of the discussion. The conservation district is 11,200 acres. HUGE AREA!! TMT needs 6 acres. TINY AREA compared. This amounts to 0.01% of the reserve. Is this the destruction of The sacred Mauna? Not even remotely close. Native Hawaiians were asked to come to the table and refused. Sovereignty is the issue not TMT. What are the protesters offering to help Hawaii. Not a damn thing, NOTHING.

Thats the shitty part. Its been to the Supreme court and approved. Hate to say it, but this sudden influx of protectors/protestors should of been at those hearings many years ago, but they weren't. There were a core group of people, including this woman, who has been fighting against TMT since the start many years ago. If as much people responded to whats happening now back then, then we wouldn't be in this mess. Social media played a large part in it. It created a society where there's A LOT of talk, but no action or execution. If they were really dedicated to protect Mauna Kea, they wouldve been there standing side by side 5-10 years ago when this and other observatory projects first started.

When it’s all said and done 3 million plus for a single family home after interest. Just so we can keep our Ohana together. So it has consumed all our time. I see now if there’s ever gonna be change we need to get out the western rat race and back to our cultural foundation. I apologize for being so distanced and late to the game, but we find many new ways to help the fight. No matter what the result we will be better and stronger for it.

M W Mauna Kea’s forest reserve acreage is 52,500 acres. The TMT will occupy less than 6 acres within the 525 acres of the approved “Astronomy Precinct,” which sits well inside the 11,228 acres of the designated “Science Reserve” allocated for a range of projects that are strictly moderated for specific uses, all of which help to protect and preserve Hawaiian lands.
This means the TMT takes up less than 0.01% of the preserve, which is itself a mere fraction of the total area and mass of the entire Mauna from sea floor to summit.
I’m pretty confident Pele can handle that just fine and not even flinch.

The TMT takes up less than 0.01% of the entire preserve. The preserve itself is a mere fraction of the Mauna’s entire area and mass from sea floor to summit. What’s more is that this technology is literally protecting our entire planet against threats both terrestrial and celestial.
If Hawaiians want to go down as a people so stubbornly unwillingly to join the world, in creating some of the most essential and cutting edge technologies in history, while also imperiling all life on Earth - and the Earth itself - then this is the way to do it.
Environmentalism will be as useful as a rudderless ship without astronomy, and specifically astronomy in Hawaii, which has the empyrean global locations for facilitating the advancements of this tech and all mankind.
Any religion that can’t see fit to coexist with astronomy (the oldest science in history) needs to do some serious soul searching.

Its so sad. Here you have the chance to be great people but they have you so horribly manipulated that you think were nothing but a bunch of monsters. That is what thw powers that be have always done, only when you question and understamd the scapegoats you are made to believe are evil will you rise as a people and say no we are only hurting ourselves. This whole thing, whether you choose to see it or not, is EXACTLY that. Come to Hawaii, ill buy you a Goddamn ticket if I have to, just come see it for yourself. Were normal people, not fanatics. Imagine your grandmother seeing that you've done nothing but become blind, sacrifice her life so that you can live free of such powerful control, and what you just sit and watch her die? No you say fuck these people who hurt her and you be a man and stand the fuck up and fight, even if you lose. America has clouded your mind. You all make good points but truly you are missing the real one. It doesnt matter, if you wanna keep being a puppet go right ahead, its only gonna hurt yourself in the end, as for us, no. We have balls to stand up, maybe you all could learn a thing or two of what you all should be doing yourselves. But you are programmed to fear and that same fear is why you are here ranting to us. Its so funny, because until that thing started getting publicly recognized you would have seen us on the street and never thought twice. Were not monsters we aren't trying to make it difficult and were not against the whole world, just America and you all should be too. Its become a joke to the rest of the world, and its the blind people like yourself who is obviously passionate and cares a great deal of your own values that need to wake up here and just question, am I really thinkng this? Or is it the elite few messing with our heads and pitting us against each other. Ill make it easy. Its the second one. I dont need to explain myself if you have a brain use it? Have you EVER been told the truth? The answer is NO. You and us are the same. Weve been lied to all our lives to keep us in line and while there are people who gladly can do that hawaiians know better, becuse in our lifetime we have seen things done that you or any body out on mainland would never see or believe unless you did. Its sad, I respect science, I'm not against it but you are designed to believe we are. And I mean designed. You are not a product of your own imagining. You are a product of the good ole never did anything evil ever USA.. Sad thing is you dont see straight this is like talking to drunk people i swear. Pisciotta is the President of the Mauna Kea Anaina Hou group, which made the following opposition statement to the TMT Project Conservation Development Use Application:
*_"We object to any telescope to continue its existence beyond the 2033 lease termination."_*
That's not a reasonable compromise or a win-win for both parties. They want ALL observatories to be removed from Mauna Kea by 2033. It's going to take 8-10 years to build TMT. By the time TMT is operational and sees first light, it would be time for its decommission. That's a very hardline, lopsided negotiation strategy.

No, they weren't speaking of the Keck or Subaru. In their TMT opposition statement to the TMT CDUA, section _8. The Life Of The TMT Extends 23 Years Beyond The General Lease_ of their 9 page statement, they clearly stated, *"We object to any telescope to continue its existence beyond the 2033 lease termination."* They don't want the TMT since its construction would take 8-10 years, operate for 50 years (construction time included), and it's sub-lease period would extend beyond the end of the current master lease's end date of 2033. They want ALL telescopes to be REMOVED after the current master lease expires. That's not a compromise, but a line-in-the-sand, hardline position.

There are many stakeholders in this public policy issue (kanaka, Hawaiian citizens, TMT, State of Hawaii, partner countries). The right holders are the native Hawaiian beneficiaries and the general public. The Hawaiian Admissions Act states the the land trust can also be used for public development for the greater good. The observatories satisfy that criteria for use based on public good. The kanaka are _very important,_ but they aren't the sole beneficiary of the land trust. The public also is a rightholder. The telescopes advance human understanding, explore the beauty of nature, promote education, drive useful technology development and protect the planet from cosmic threats (such as asteroids that can cause city level or cataclysmic destruction). There is plenty of room on the mauna for culture and science to coexist.

@@kakela2883 well you need to understand that to us these people are doing nothing short of maintaining military occupation and doing all this illegal shit to us since I was born. I grew up watching these people die trying to keep our traditions and culture going, this is very serious and while you are entitled to your own view I advise you to tread very lightly here with your comments we are a sovereign people who take this shit extremely seriously and to make light of it is not only fucking insanely offensive but it is not your fight. It is ours so stay out unless you're ready to die by your words. I am. This thing was going to be the size of a football field. The government is paid likely from tourist ....the tourist come one time and then come back because of the culture of the people who survived the occupancy of a different culture. The out come of this should favor the original cultural belief if you want to use it as a pay check. And also because it won't matter by the time it is built we will have much better telascopes in orbit with much less cost and damage to a already stressed ecosystem. You know.. the thing that keeps even government and scientist alive with the rest of us..haha why can't someone see it this way ...its beyond me . I am all for respect and the right thing . This has to do with the real law of humanity and not the man made ones ,that only some have to follow aprently. So many broken treaties with different cultures . How is it that the tallest mountain top in the world and such a overly stated cultural sacred space become for only some and not the whole world.? Not even the survived Hawaiian people who use dance as sign language to pay respect to the gods and tell stories have the right to stop anyone else to be up there and see the world from this place. Sure they can protect it from harm but not from the people of the world .to be up there where it belongs to everyone because of the fact that it is one of a kind. Now on the other mountains you should build a rail gun from the sea to the mountains top and make wave generators power it to launch none living objects into space , like maybe a telascope...haha. the whole of the Islands could become so wealthy if they made this. Thanks.

Michale Walker this response is muddled. Our people aren’t stopping anyone from going up the mountain. Going there isn’t the problem, using dynamite to blow it up is a problem. Carving out a gigantic hole is a problem. Whether cultural or scientific, it’s wrong. Hula is not sign language to the gods. Most Hawaiians don’t sell out our culture. That’s the government. You sound uneducated in this subject.
