I lived in Opihikao from 1980 to 2000. Most of that time I worked on Mauna Kea as a telescope operator. I love that Mountain. The only time I saw any disrespect for the Mountain was after the snow when the empty beer cans and other trash was scattered over the side of the road. Most of us that worked there were very thankful for our jobs and cleaned up after the people that visited, some of those same people call themselves "Protectors, and what ever they want to call themselves." Try to get rid of the tourists and maybe the pakalolo farmers. See who does the most for the economy of Hawaii and the least to the environment. The telescopes don't hurt anyone and they are the cash cow that most people only wish they had.

These people are only wasting their time. Look up the Dakota Access Pipeline protests and see how that ended. The same thing is going to happen here. The DAPL protest was much more powerful and there were more people involved, like thousands and thousands of people coming in from other states to protest. The cause was so much stronger and they even had military veterans, Hollywood celebrities, and important politicians joining in the fight to help the Indians but they still lost.

You act as if this telescope is going to bring something so necessary to the residents of the Big Island that they can not live without. Seriously, scientific endeavors are good and all but really, this instrument is to gaze light years away and to make "discoveries" and formulate or disprove theories. There are other scientific and green technologies that can benefit the Hawaiian people and humanity far more than yet another telescope on the mountain!
