How utterly delightful! I listen to this as a sort of unlooked for birthday gift: tonight, as I enter upon my 70th year, I learn of an instrument and a repertoire of which, until this moment, I knew absolutely nothing. My thanks to you, Lukas, and to the gifted and charming Franziska Fleischanderl for this truly rejuvenating music!
Dear James, first of all: Happy Birthday! Such responses always completely redeem all the time and effort that goes into those videos. It just feels great to hear that it managed to improve your day and introduce you to this sound that time *almost* forgot! By the way, in case you’d like to hear more of Franziska’s playing and have a listen to the (really fabulous!) CD mentioned in the interview: It’s also available through the usual channels online: Spotify and iTunes, where it’s only 9$. Anyway. Best wishes!
I swear these are the best videos on youtube. I cannot believe there is a channel dedicated to lute's, other ancient lovely instruments, and the history around them. As a young lute player I am very excited for the up and coming videos!
Hey Owen, thank you so much for the kind words! I had a look on your channel and soundcloud some days ago and honestly admire your work way more than you ever could mine. ;) Those are some great songs and if Spotify just shuffled them into a Fleet Fox-ish playlist for me, I probably wouldn’t even have noticed anything being off. ;) Anyway, I’ll recommend them to some friends, your stuff deserves exposure! And I’ll do my best to keep my upcoming videos fresh and entertaining, great to hear that you’re getting into the lute. There’s a lot to discover about it beneath the surface.
Thanks that means a lot truly! Putting up a new song right now actually. I actually built that lute in my workshop because I was so desperate to get my hands one a lute! I've been obsessed for years!! I'm thinking about making a 13c for Weiss, why do you tend to gravitate to the 5c? I made an 8c because I eventually want to sing Dowland I love renaissance Dowland for lute and voice duet, but for solo lute I AM OBSESSED WITH BAROQUE AND WIESS ERA STUFF.
Mere coïncidence, I tried to play on a Hungarian " cimbalom/cimbalum/ ... Cimbalmunk de vígan pengeti - play happily the cimbalum " in Hungary a few days ago. Moreover I am trying to give a good translation of the very ancient and wonderful song " Ungaresca " where the cimbalom is quoted. So this wonderful " Salterio " seems to be the following of the " Cimbalom ". Superb ! Both thumbs up ! Great thanks, indeed !
Before watching this I knew nothing of the salterio, so thank you. A beautiful instrument, beautifully played. The salterio and the theorbo sound particularly well together!
Don't they! It was a new experience for me as well - accompanying the Salterio played with the "pizzicato" technique requires a whole new sensitivity and delicacy from the accompanist, yet I sense a lot of potential in this combination, the two instruments complement each other. I'm happy to hear that this video managed to introduce you to the Salterio, and in case you'd like to explore the sound more I whole-heartedly recommend Franziska's CD "Sacred Salterio" mentioned in the video. Some of the background music was taken from it and there are lots more of profoundly beautiful things to discover there. (The record is also on Spotify, by the way, if you'd like to have a first listen.) Best regards!
What a beautiful instrument! Much more direct than a harp, it has something magical. Have just ordered the CD, can not wait to lose myself in this music.
I'm really happy to hear that this feature managed to introduce the instrument to new listeners. As I see it, the Salterio really deserves more exposure. The sound is already so magical that simply being demonstrated to today's audience is pretty much all it takes to convince them. Cheers!

What a wonderfully charming instrument! Thanks for introducing us to Franziska and her lovely instrument.
The Salterio really is a thing of beauty. Thank you for watching!

It seems...Vienna was but a freezing echo of Naples. Fantastic episode.

Sparkling and ethereal.

Well, this video was certainly an interesting twist. I had never even heard of a salterio before.

Thanks a lot for your wonderful videos! Your channel is one of the best on RUclips.
I am just wondering: what's the painting we see at 10:54?
