Why do you people think it's so much fun to insult this man? He's giving us serious music creators a valuable gift!
because there is better tutorials
Best video, and it was 8 years ago
buy good equipment, u and pio rich 😂
Fr bro
Dude.. I can't thank you enough for this video. I've been looking for YEARS on how to EQ my voice the right way. I have a really deep voice and have been asking people left and right and researching on the net for so long trying to get a good sound. No one was helpful. This setting doesn't seem to put my voice in the music but it's SO much cleaner now. I have have to play around with it more to get the perfect sound but thank you SO much.
-10 year musician
4 years of mixing horrible muddy vocals that sat above the mix, this pretty much does the trick. Thank you so much!
This track is off the album ' The Best of Gynecology ' by Pap Schmear
What’s the song called I can’t find it anywhere
@@TheGrandMaster896 this tracks called vulva redux
Very great explanation of EQ for vocals. I watched this for the first time a few years ago and it's been super helpful for years.
ive been searching for a tutorial like this one the entire time ive been making music. now i feel a lot better about singing in my music. thank you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been teaching myself to record music for about 5 years now and it's so hard to find reasonably tutorials like this. And most of the people who know something worthwhile say stuff like, "Every mix is different, so I can't teach you." It's nice to know that someone is courteous enough to share these things and give people his book for free. Thanks!
this is by far the best vocal recording tutorial out there. simple and to the point. and most importantly, it works. my stuff sounds very professional now, thanks man!
Hello artofpretention! I agree this was an amazing video! If you are interested, I recently put out a short video of me going over a very practical way of EQing Vocals. I know you will find it of value! Check it out HERE: ruclips.net/video/YN3Z99vKj9w/видео.html
Spot on. I had come to the same conclusion about listening level--softer, not louder. I'd learned this some time ago, and finally, everything started to fall into place. Not sure just why, but I think it has something to do with freq response and sound pressure of human hearing.
You are the best man.
Since i started watching your videos my mixing skills have improved
thanx man
Wow! Dude. Just tried your magic with a girl's vocal track and couldn't wipe the grin off my face as it lifted the sound so beautifully. THANKS!!!!!
Hey, it's funny because I actually just answered the same question on my How To Master A Song vid.
I don't think it's ideal to mix on headphones, it's certainly not impossible but it is more difficult.
At least I find it much more difficult -but at the end of the day it's about the RESULTS and it doesn't matter how you get there.
So if for whatever reason you have to use headphones, it can be done, but just MAKE SURE that you reference back on your monitors.
Hope that helps!
THIS HAS TO BE THE MOST HELPFUL VOCAL EQUING VIDEO ON RUclips...I JUST LEARNED PRICELESS INFORMATION FOR FREE.... THANKS ROB I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND EFFORT!
LET ME INSIDE, THE WONDERS OF YOUR WORLD

Dad???
When you are an artist having to do your own recording and mixing at home it's great to have tips like these to help! Thanks a million and I'm heading over to watch your mastering tutorial next!
Awesome video! Simply explained and made easy for the beginner. Thanks for the video!!
This has changed my vocal recording game 10 fold. You did an OUTSTANDING JOB with explaining the Whats and hows. THANK YOU!
thank you so much for this, helped me out in a pinch
great vid, great tutorial, and made it simple enough for me, a noob
Excellent. I hope we haven't lost this talented instructor.
Yeah it's a very similar process to how you'd EQ instruments. I think that's some good 'rule of thumb' advice you've gotten, but it's not ALWAYS the case.
I've found that it's best not to spend too much time upfront EQing something, rather do a quick EQ to where it sounds good, and then tweak it in the CONTEXT of the MIX.
This is very important, because it doesn't matter if it sounds great on it's own, it needs to sound great with the surrounding instruments. Hope that helps!
Wow, i tried this immediately and it worked much better. The compression is still difficult to get a ear for but already with just the EQ it sits much better in the mix. Now i'm off to try my hand at mastering the track with your tips.
seriously, thanks.
Hey, I'm looking into it at the moment!
Thank you so much rob!!! You're a savior! Without this tutorial many of us will not get our mix right so thumbs up for you man :)
actually the offending freq were not bad at that point 800hz, but there was a mud in the lowmids and low freq of the vocal
These videos are saving my butt right now! I'm mixing down my first attempt at a self produced record and many of the problems I've run into are being resolved , mostly from watching your videos. Sincerely - THANK YOU!
RIP Rob Williams.
I was scrolling down this to see if I could find who the artist and song was that he used n this video. I would like to hear the rest of the tune. Sounds interesting. I noticed this "RIP Rob Williams" Did he die of are you just trying to be funny and I am not getting it? Seems like a good chap.
Rob Chapman he's prob making a joke because the actor robin williams died recently
Ah. Yes, that makes sense.
Rob Chapman Haha - I'm alive and well Rob! :) BTW, the song's name is 'A Beautiful View'
Is it your tune or someone else's
Rob Williams the legend. I always come back.
Even with an excellent quality mic, you'll still need to mix the vocals in with the instrumentation, or as mentioned, it won't sound blended and in unison. It would just sound like vocals and instrumentation playing with one being on top of the other.
MOST of the kind of mixing you should be using to keep the instruments from sounding like they are on top of each other is pan and volume. Volume to "push and pull" the instruments farther away and closer to you, and pan to "widen" the mix. Eqing should be used, obviously, but it can ruin a mix quickly too.
Stratocat93 This is true.
Alex Fairgood It makes a better recording artist out of you when you have as crappy a voice as I do! You learn a lot about your editing tools that way haha. The only thing worse than a so-so vocal track is a still so-so vocal track that has way too much eq! XD
I just signed up, excelent communication skills, best explanation by far...not just teaching but actually demostrating. Thank you so much!
Absolutely.. compression probably does the most for 'sitting in the mix' -however, you still need to have the EQ right
what do you need to do first? compression or eq?
Ludwig Frehse its compresion first then eq... but some people do eq then comprehend then eq again... it’s weird do more research... thanks
The quality of my audio tracks has just improved ten fold. Just played with compressions and reverb and my tracks are sounding so much better. Thanks Heaps! :)
Thanks for the tip helps a lot
Great tutorial, helped many of us realize ALL vocals sound messed up until they're manhandled by a pro!! Thanks and I keep this as a go to video.
I would like to hear the whole song, what's the name of the artists and song
The GAY Rainbow band
I think it's important to mention that both subtractive EQ and additive EQ are useful in different ways. For example, subtractive EQ can be used to 'notch out' a spot for a kick drum hit to sit on top of a bass note when they are sharing the same space. This can be done by identifying the frequency range of the offending bass note and creating a narrow notch at that frequency. It usually requires just a very subtle reduction (a few db at most) to let the kick drum sit on top and sound more dynamic, more present, with more punch. Thanks Rob for sharing your ideas!
thank you:)
yall are killin me with these "this song is bad, but good tutorial" comments lmbo
I bet most of the people who say that listen to the horrible trap or today's rap. This song is pretty good.
Bro you’re a life saver i think you explained it the best out of a lot of these other youtubers 🙏🏾
but i will say good tutorials. now can i have my ice cream please
Hi Rob It was an amazing piece of Education. Simply loved it. How much EASY you have made this whole EQ thing. I have become more comfortable with the Equalisers now.
The Best part was that you discussed about the importance of different frequencies. Thanks
Ok if anyone see's this, I'd love to know if you master the vocals with no effects on it first or mix the vocals with effects: eq, reverb, etc? please respond.
You'll want to start playing with eq in the mix, some compression and likely a bit of reverb (obviously a reverb that fits with the other instruments' reverb) but always keep a copy of the raw vocal track, so if it ends up too messed up, you can start from scratch.
Jerome Parli means a lot thanks man.
If it helps man, I'm stoked.
I record dry, eq and compressor then work with reverb.
I guess I shouldn't assume that everyone realises that recording dry is the obvious initial step. I thought it was implied in "always keep a copy of the raw vocal track".
It's crazy how fast this helped and got rid of the muddy vocals. Quality advice and easy tutorial. Thank
when he says u can "clearly hear the difference" and u don't
Addy Hebou u ear is shot if u cant
Welcome to the world of pro mixing! You need to be using studio, not domestic monitors/headphones to get anything out of any of these kinds of vids. That's about $500 minimum for your boxes and $150 plus for your cans.
As they always say "Hey lady, nice cans"
You Need more time mixing dear friend, call me and couple of years 1 800 dear friend
It is clear that you need to clean your ears.
It's really up to you. As you develop your own workflow you will decide for yourself. It is worth pointing out that the more plug-ins you use the more CPU you will be using.
The way I approach EQ is like this.
The first EQ the track runs through addresses problems. Like mic-POP. Or if its drums, bleed from other drums/cymbals. Basically the first EQ is for getting rid of any excess frequency content or problems withing the audio. Or defining a specific tone.
Question - Can I apply the techniques you show here after the vocals have been recorded?
I figured it out - I just added the plug in to the recorded track....duh...
Monique Boea Hahaha, happens
Rolfeee q
Monique Boea yep
@@MoniqueBoea lol, you have no idea how many "duh" moments I have had the past few years since I opened my first DAW. I'm sure I have many more waiting for me:))
Hey Ryan, yeah thanks for your mail! -It's a good question.. You can do that but you have to remember that every effect on the individual vocals will be affected by that. Will this make a big difference? Probably not.
But say for example there's a 'popping' sound on the vocal, your compressor is going to react to that and bring down the entire vocal which sounds unnatural.
Here's the thing, you're going to use an EQ on each vocal anyway so you may as well put it on there. Hope that helps!
Sounds like Bryan Adams.
I thought the same :p
Greg Krupa You can find this track (stems) and others for mix practice on: www.cambridge-mt.com/ms-mtk.htm
Is this so I can sing with Bryan now, Thnx dude,,,lol😜
Greg Krupa Sounds a little like him, but this guy's voice is higher =)
I am so happy to see you here. You did a lot for me earlier in my introduction to mixing
Such an awesomely gay song. Great tutorial, though.
LesPaul2006 Oh my god I cracked up so hard
Somebody please pick up their trolling crying child
the wonders i will find
LesPaul2006 lol
works pretty awesomely for me. I guess it didn't for you, huh?
Thank you it will help me for my own vocals recordings I knew it took longer to work on the sound than to record it now it's even clearer for me Thanks again from France
Or you can just use a great mic and not EQ at all, or do as little EQ as possible. I hate eq'ed vocals that sound unnatural. For someone with very expensive audio systems, there's nothing worse than ruined vocals. Like in this video, vocals end up sounding thin, lifeless and overly sibilant. Basically, the singer ends up sounding totally different if you hear him in person compared to the way he sounds after his recording was all EQ'd.
I love very pure clean natural vocals too so I agree to a point and yes, many recordings today are absolute crap. However, the context of the voice (rest of the mix) influences how we perceive that voice so it will sound different anyway depending on the situation. It's relative and not absolute (like how we visually perceive contrast) so EQing done right is good like any other coloration.
Mojave MA-200 ..no EQ needed most times. Killer vocal mic
I disagree entirely.. as my other comment says(to a lesser degree). Any cheap budget LDC mic will have a super aggressive & painful to listen to high end. They are already boosted in the 4-12k range naturally & dont take large EQ boosts well at all. Take any MXL or Behringer mic & put a massive high shelf boost on & your ears will almost bleed. If that works for you then enjoy your ensuing deafness folks!
low cut is must, other frequency don't fix it as you can.
the great sound is not what it heared in single, but in the song``````
Finally, someone who explains EQ shelves! Thanks!
It's great to have a recipe of which tonal characteristics to boost and cut, and what frequency ranges to look for them in. Also, thank you for mentioning different styles of music and common problems amateurs might encounter. This is a great help.
Drastic changes here, only those with trained ears will hear what he is accomplishing. Those little changes are what makes it at the end of the day. Keep it up man.
Thank you my friend. that's what I call "Digest and get the Best of it". your advise and indications really make a difference when recording vocals. I do appreciate your knowledge on the matter.
Wilfredo Rivera
Thanks 😊
Just basic steps but laid out really well and the teaching was easy to grasp.. Thanks for taking your time to give this to everyone!
OMG You are a life saver!! Im using garageband and its still working for me!!! But please do a compression video because i dont think i know everything i need to know when using them. But thank you so much man!!
That was a great lesson 👍.
Where are you ? When are you coming back. I want to see more of these videos. Very informative ❤️👍
+1 to South Africa. This video is gold. Keep going Rob. I am learning so much.
Dude, I've been struggling like hell for weeks to remove this quality from my vocal track that can only be described as "muffled." This video helped me remove it effortlessly then achieve a sound quality I didn't previously think was possible with this mic. Thanks!
Use your ears....if it is muffled then you need to cut......by ear you could have found the frequency.
Thank you so much! I had not the first clue how to EQ vox before this. Your video helped out tremendously!
as an old veteran with 5800 tracks under my bely i tend to not listen too much when young whippersnappers are spouting about eq etc - dont get me wrong, one can learn from any source - but i typically take my advice from the "acknowledged" masters.
That being said, I would like to say that this video is pretty solid and quite insightful. This gives me hope for the future of production. And I have to say "Well done" to Mr. Williams for making this quality video.
Best video I’ve ever seen on the topic. I’m keeping the infographic next to me as I mix. Thank you for this.
Thanks for the info! I have been applying these techniques to my mixes & it def cleans up the vocals & sits it in the mix better.
Great videos Rob and they're not 'marred' by intrusive music (like others do) while you are speaking.
Thanks Rob for an excellent video, simple and clear ... and very useful. Please keep me posted with any more training from you.
Man Thank God for this video I was doing my EQs allll fucked up. Just used your method and noticed major improvements. Thanks for educating me lol
Good info. I don't know if it's in the cards but recording these in HD would make for a better sound and allow us to hear more of what's going on. If this were to come about, it would be much appreciated.
How do you not have more subscribers. This is the best page for learning how to mix properly.
Thank you. I hope you plan on posting more videos soon. They're very professional and thorough, some of the best I've seen on RUclips. And as a music teacher myself, I've recommended your video on mastering to several students.
aye man I admire the intel and communication you have ! clearly understandable (speaking English lets say lol). you didnt leave any important detail out and spoke in such a small straight out sentence and the demonstration was A1 also ! thanks a lot
ROB DO SOME MORE VIDEOS!! on mixing and mastering!!! your two videos atm are so helpful!! please please please post some more!!
You're good at explaining in a brief way... I use what one almost could call "vintage equipment" because it works best for instrumental recordings, which I enjoy the most, so doing vocal recordings is often a pain in the ass... but this tip about actively looking for offensive frequencies in the vocal track, it's a nice approach to getting the sound you want without spending too much time
While I think you've thinned the voice a bit too much, I've just found myself returning to your video, to remember what you did on a problem of muddy, booming vocals. So, that says something about how useful your video is. Even if I don't completely 'agree' with your choice of frequencies or amount subtraction, the principles you showed us are worth remembering. Thanks again.
Totally enjoyed, beautifully presented and well balanced here. Nice that the music sample was actually musical. Thanks for this and your modesty. Well Done!
Dude you rock!!!! I have been trying to fix some vocals for days (i am a newby at this) and I followed your steps and voila!!!! Thank you so much!
Thanks...I am finally starting to understand the EQ process...thanks to you.
Good info! Tried it on male rap vocals and it made a big difference! Thanks again for the tip.
Really nice vid Rob. I imagine this will be great help for beginners, I wish I had someone to sit down and explain those things to me when I first started!
It amazing what you can do with plug ins and in the box but it seems that the professional producers will reach for the sound engineer with all the old compressors at the end of the line-best of both worlds
Thanks for the advice. Simple and sweet !
This was quite helpful; I'd been having some trouble making the vocals "pop" in the mix, and this clearly shows how subtle changes can make a noticeable difference. Thank you for the input!
The generalize effect is the "telephone" filter. Use both high-pass and low-pass filter. cut everything below 500Hz and above 2000Hz. Play around with those two frequencies until it sounds the way you like. You can also add a little distortion to make things a little grainier... bit crushers, etc.
Nice video Rob! one other thing to mention folks is whenever you start to boost 5k+ pay attention to your plossives (may need to use de-essing more)
Thanks Rob! Good info for all musicians who don't know this yet.
Very, very good tutorial Rob., Good point about taking care when boosting EQ when using less than great equipment. My SABC mentors would have been proud of you !
Great tutorial, I would say a difference between boosting and cutting with EQ would be pre or post compression. As a rule of thumb I would say cut pre, boost post. Also, if you boost, think about backing off the output
actually when i posted my comment i didn't finish watching the video, and looks that at the end of the video you fixed that low midrange problem i heard, makes me feel good that i spotted that. Cheers, great video
Good job ROB! Clear, concise and accurate descr. & explanation.Keep it up....
Awesome! I'm in the studio working on my next track, and these tips are very helpful.
A small tip: Search for "Encoding Video For RUclips: Advanced Specifications" in the youtube-help. You'll find format and exact bitrate for the best quality audio there.
8 years later it helped this man get his first placement 🙏🏾💯🤝
are there plans to make more videos? this is the best video on vocal EQ'ing i have seen! thank you, and please continue to make mixing and mastering videos.
I've seen a few techniques done for this. While compression settings will make a difference, EQ tends to position the bass right in between the bottom oomf of the kick and the upper freq. punch. Of course, it depends greatly on the sound of the mix, but generally you want to keep them out of each other's hair...so to speak.
Only two videos uploaded, and I'm already subscribed! These are great! Thanks!
Usefull indeed Rob! Thanx a lot for the insight will definetly try your tips out and Im sure to get results. Keep it up
One thing that helps me when mixing vocals is boosting them from 10 KHz upwards for more intimacy. Found this tip in a Kindle book (I think it was "Audio Effects, Mixing and Mastering" by Bektas) and it usually works out great.
Thanks! I saw the mastering video and can't wait for you to come out with the more detailed version you talked about in your email.
Thank you Rob, It really helped. I'm an artist myself and I appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge. Much Love.
