The Trip That Beat Us Ep4-Snow sets in

- We survived the night in Storm Eunice at Beacon Fell Visitor Centre and make an early start heading to Chipping for breakfast.
Next we go to Clitheroe for a walk round the town and market but as the snow starts to fall we just make do with a photo of the castle.
As the snow worsens we can no longer continue our journey and have to return to Clitheroe and take shelter in a pub.

I will be moving trip video releases to Monday nights so the next episode will be Monday 2nd May. 👍
Your picture, Carol, really shows the reality of the day!
Thanks Daisy Mae 🙏
Hi Ken 👍 Carol 😘 Pub sounds good in the awful weather, nice and cozy ehh. I Must admit after my Hebrides tour I’m thinking about biting the bullet and investing in some AT tires though very expensive Arghh ! I will have to sell my soul 🤪 they do have a longer life than normal road tires 👍 and safety is key, plus no more Drama’s getting “Christine” in a pickle on mountain roads 🚐🤪 LOL Travel Safe both hugs 🚐👍🐾👊🐕🦺
Couldn't agree more, the right tires are not a luxury but a necessity, especially when it's your home. The other danger of course is people running into you. Looking forward to your next trip and seeing where you end up. I will send you a DM on instagram soon. 👍
👍👊👊👊
Thank Ken and Carol for sharing this lovely video of the rain and snow..so beautiful and peaceful...living in the desert of Arizona one misses rain...just extremely windy and warm here..already the forest fire season has begun, so many homes destroyed and land lost...We would appreciate you sending rain this way...Take care from Arizona 🌵😉
Thanks for watching Elisabeth. Sorry to hear about the devastating fires you have had. We will try and send some rain your way 🤞🙂☔️
Much appreciated😊...Please tell Carol her photograph was amazing, she does have an eye for beautiful scenery..😉
@@Elisabeth-zi8ww Will do. Thank you ☺️
Very pretty in the snow
I had a permanent smile watching this beautiful video of Clitheroe (my hometown) and surrounding area. You passed St Paul's Church I attended as a child and the estate there is where I grew up. Such a shame about the stormy winds & rain but the snow always adds a little charm. It was a relief to see you turn around in the snow because you were heading up to Waddington Fell where you could've become stuck. Finishing off in the White Lion pub too - I used to work there many moons ago. Sorry for the long comment I just obviously really connected with this video. Loved it. Hope you return in the future in better weather ❤
We hoped you would enjoy what we could show of Clitheroe. What a coincidence you used to work in the White Lion! Glad we could bring back some happy memories for you, Sue 😀👍❤️
@@LifeistooshortCK Oh you certainly did that 😊👍🏻
Great vlog as usual,we were at clitheroe camping and caravan club you passed 2 weeks ago.
The carpark zt the front has no overnight parking whi h is a shame.
Lovely hearing a bit about your background Sue. Clitheroe looks like a really nice place to grow up 😊🧙♂️
Dear Ken and Carol, please come back to lovely Lancashire in the warmer months, it really is beautiful and full of colour up here 🌳 🌞 🌸 not always grey! Sending you warming hugs from Preston ❤ xxx
I’m sure we will be back in warmer times. Lots we wanted to see up there 🙂👍
That statue was the absolute spitting image of you! Brilliant 😂😂😂 ATB, RJ
Thanks 😂
Good vlog, lovely choice of music. Had to laugh on your statue joke Ken, good sense of english humor 👍😅 have a lovely weekend 👋
Thanks Anita. You too 🙂👍
@@LifeistooshortCK 👋 cheers
My wife and I so enjoy your adventures. Stay safe out there amongst the people. 😊
@@nelsonmiller-oe7co thanks for watching 🙂
The park was beautiful and the village was so quaint & pretty. Looks like lovely town😇🌹.Pamela
Thanks Pamela 🙏
The statue made me laugh out loud. 😂
Another great video… Strength to strength… Isnt a lovely walking past the old police stations and seeing the old police signs , illuminates and has four glass sides…. I think they look fantastic
We did have a good look at the old blue lamp as we walked past 😊
Good morning Carol and Ken. Bbbbrrrrrrhhhh that looked a cold one. You did well to keep your spirits up. The villages looked pretty in the snow, from the comfort of home! Thank you for the driving tips. X
The snow always looks pretty when you know you are safe and warm ☺️😁👍
Lovely to see you out and about. You are intrepid travellers. Thanks for heads up about change to Mondays- so we get two together this week! Yummy.
Thanks Sarah 🙂
Carol and Ken again excellent video as always you definitely was out in the worst weather we all had...but as you know the sun will come back someday after this video was recorded 😉😉😉
Can't wait for the next video...😉👍
Thanks Rob. We are certainly looking forward to some spring sunshine after that trip ☺️
@@LifeistooshortCK I'd like to believe that with the snow 🙂
Hello! Carol takes some amazing photo’s! Thank you for sharing 🙂
Thank you Lyn 🙏
I love carols photo of the castle so beautiful. Would make a lovley print for the wall or even a postcard or xmas card. It looked so cold xx
Nice castle photo Carol! 😊 snowy, trip. ❄️❄️
Thanks Jacqueline 🙏
Stay in the pub. Stay in the pub. Or is that just the Glaswegian in me ❤️.
I don’t know how much you enjoyed this trip with storms queueing up to blast us but I enjoyed the film, from the comfort of my own home here ❤️.
I will be interested to see which tyres you go for Ken. I replaced my winterised set on my nv200 for stiff walled van tyres (it’s a work van only) and they are like ice skates on wet roads and would not have managed in the snow you had.
Cheers Douglas and Caroline.
Ha thanks Douglas. The pub was a great shelter from the snow. At this point we were still enjoying the trip but it was early days! Will certainly have to look into getting some all weather tyres. Best wishes to you and Caroline 🙂
That statue put a smile on my face. What an ogre!
👹😂❤️
Perfect example why I think a van that is just a bit bigger would be of more comfort to you on these cold rainy days. Something that is cozy and snug where curling up with a book sounds good. I have spent enough off season days in the UK, when I was young and poor and the damp chill goes straight to the bones. But by going off season I could stay three weeks, instead of 10 days! Now that I’m older, yikes……….I’m cold all the time 😅😅😅😅😅😅
Yes, looking forward to being able to lounge comfortably in a bigger van, especially on those cold, wet days 😁
I had to put on my sweatshirt on watching this!! Brrrrrrrrrrr…cold! Glad you were safe and sound and hunkered down in the Pub 👍
Haha. Sorry about that Jackie. Hope you soon warmed up 😁
Nice, you did see a bit of beacon fell. I thought they'd stopped people camping up there years ago when I was a boy racer. That one way circuit was a great track at night but they stopped it ✋ lol
Keep hoping to see one of these van tours travelling through the North East one day as my wife & I left Weardale in 1971!
Meanwhile keep up the good work.
I’m sure we will head up that way at some point 🙂👍
Ok, I watched four episodes and you got me rifling through the food cupboard for a can of soup! The whole thing was making me shiver!
Put an extra jumper on for the next episode 😉😁
Love ur videos (movies)
Very nice.
I love the commentary, camera angles, all the information (great tour guides)
Love the pictures Carol does.
What artist.
Drone footage also gives different perspective.
🤠🦋 very nicely done.
Thank U Both for what u are bringing to us.
Peace, Dianna from Denver co
That’s a lovely comment. Thank you so much Dianna. We are glad you enjoy our videos 🙏
Great Trip 😁
Thank you for another wonderful trip through the English countryside. My least favorite snowfall is the first of the season when everybody "has forgotten how to drive in the snow" then it's fender-bender city. I have found that all-season tires work best for me.
Thanks Joel. We will definitely have to get some all-season tyres 🙂👍
When u go under them car park height restricters..I have to duck lol.
Looks a gloomy old day...but it’s still nice to watch..saying that we’ve had no rain for ages in the southeast.
Thanks for the video..carol n Ken.
Thanks Susan 🙂
Another area near me that I've never heard of. You really do find some interesting and obscure places. Nice job getting off the snow road early. Wisdom over heroics. 👍😘x
Thanks for watching. We get a lot of inspiration from watching other RUclips channels. We wanted to come to the Forest of Bowland and surrounding area after watching Sue’s channel, Campervanya. Hope you are well 🙂👍
Your weather adventure was fun. It looked like you both made the best of the situation. Snowy weather means hunker down and get Cozy. Have a great day! Mary
We were certainly glad the pub was open so we could shelter somewhere warm for the afternoon. Have a great weekend 🙂
So interesting to see the snow in towns. Great video, good decision making and a great warm pub. 💚
Your part of the world is beautiful so much history in every town you visit🙂 at 18:59 the snow looked beautiful on the trees and buildings.
Hopefully one day we too will be able to visit your stunning side of the world. Thank you for another great video ❤️
Thank you Jackie. So glad you enjoyed it. We hope you get a chance to visit the UK one day 🙂👍
Hari OM
Ahhhhhh, that's familiar stuff. It is lovely to be able to hunker down in one's own little home from home though, what? Very sensible hanging around the town in that weather. But now you have us on another cliff-hanger wondering what's coming!!! YAM xx
Its just soooo pretty!!! Pity its so cold. 😂❤
How exciting, and you made a well-informed decision to turn around.
Beautiful coverage. Excellent film and audio quality too. That's the perfect van for those roads over there. I can't imagine anything much larger being very safe. It's nice to see the two of you both comfortable with the circumstances of close quarters, and the weather conditions that don't overirde your spirit to continue on. Thanks for taking us along on your journey's. Bravo to both of you from San Francisco, California.
We have the driving easy and wouldn’t want to go much bigger 👍
I love watching you two, hope the next episode won't be too far away.
Though snow is dangerous to try to drive around in, it was so beautiful to see in your video...
Hi carol and ken, you made me chuckle ken when I saw you had your hat on in bed 😂 great idea to keep warm. My friend works in a bar and in the winter they burn an open fire in the lounge area. The weather definitely wasn't on your side. I prefer to walk in the wind rather than the rain. Cheers for another cool video. XX ❤️💙
Hi Margaret. Always good to keep your head warm in bed ☺️ Yes, don’t mind walking in the cold but don’t like getting wet ☔️ Thanks for watching 🙂
I think it never stops precipitating where you go.. Your weather reminds me of the Pacific Northwest in the USA.
It was a very wet February. Hopefully we will get a good summer this year 🤞🙂
@@LifeistooshortCK I wish we in The West US were getting your rain. We are indire straights for water.
@@kevinholland4156 will try and send some rain your way 🤞🙏☔️
Very cold and blowy. Cafe looked nice and cosy and worth waiting for. Had to almost limbo under that height barrier in your NV200! It was very wet. Not much fun working in that market. Snow did look nice but wise to go to a busier place lower down. Could do worse than being stuck in a pub. 😊🧙♂️
Thanks for watching guys. We were certainly testing ourselves that day ☺️
Ahoy Pirates! :D Such a lovely video! I know, I know. Storms and snow and everything, yet I loved watching it! :) Having breakies with you two is by far the best! Thank you for your tremendous efforts! bear hugs from your busy Cap'n
Thanks for taking time out to watch our shenanigans Cap’n. We enjoy you sharing our breakfast 🍳 Stay safe out there 😀❤️
What terrible weather. I’m really looking forward to the next episode! Thanks for sharing another entertaining video.
Thanks for watching Sylvia 🙂👍
The weather realyy had it in for you on this trip! Lovely old villages and towns Carol & Ken. But you were right to do what you decided to do. I remember Nelson and Blackburn from a tour I done with a Band in 1967. I left my wallet in my hotel room in Nelson, didn't discover it untill we were on the M1 at a services and went to pay for my meal. Had to get a loan from one of the other guys on the band. I got home about 2 weeks after and recieved a REG letter with my wallet in it, and not even the price of the postage taken from it.
Wow, that’s a great story Rupert. I wonder if that would have the same outcome if it happened today 🤔
Really looking forward to the next instalment. ☺️
Thanks Janice 🙂👍
Excellent video. Some very atmospheric shots in the snow.
Thanks Fergus 🙂
Chipping! I went on a church choir outing (annual trip) to Chipping in my early teens. Can’t remember anything about it but a tea would have been involved! It’s a lovely village. I was impressed by Clitheroe’s shops. Glad you kept safe, well and warm. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks, Laura
Thanks Laura 🙂
Really good thank you..Bowland is a lovely area...
Clitheroe looks a nice place. I’m sitting here looking out at blue skies and sunshine and that snow and cold was making me shiver! Can’t wait for the next episode!
I’m sure Clitheroe is even better when it’s not trying to snow ☺️ Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Well you definitely had it worse than us so whilst we had high winds we didn’t have the constant bad weather you had - as you say a bit grim.
One question for future q&a any tips on wet clothes and what you do to minimise etc or is it simply get them in the van and hang them up.
Clitheroe looked a real nice place to visit …..
Really enjoyed the pace and journey and can’t wait for the next one
Thanks for the shout out
You will get a chance to see what we do with wet clothes in a later video. This trip wasn’t going to get much drier 😅
Thanks for watching. Take care 🙂
All the suffering you do for us. That proper
English breakfast was payment in full.
Thanks to two fine campers!
Thank you Richard 🙏
I cannot imagine traveling in a little red campervan, maybe that’s why I enjoy your videos so much. I would miss all my kitchen projects. These last few days I have been dehydrating massive amounts of spring greens to use in soups, stew, eggs , casseroles n smoothies. Have a great week!
Hi Marie. Trying to imagine you working in the little red camper 😅 You always sound so busy and the food sounds delicious 😋 x
What another great video 👌 I was getting cold just watching you two 😂 I would have been getting very anxious driving in the snow ❄️ I would have done the same as you both and stopped somewhere 👍 looking forward to the next video 🙌❤️
Thanks Liliana 🙂
Thanks for showing how to cope with extreme weather conditions. It was great to see you remain positive and flexible. I do like the music that accompanies the vids. They are very reflective and I always check them out from the credits. They enhance the video footage. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Thomas. Glad you appreciate the music choices. Thanks for watching and your lovely comment 🙂👍
Looking forward to the next episode! My only problem is that I need to dedicate my undivided attention to your videos!! There are so many beautiful places to see and I don’t want to miss a thing. I love when Carol gives the dates & history of places you visit. Your channel is lovely to watch. Thank you.
Thank you Arlene. Glad you enjoy the videos 🙏
Winter just isn’t giving up this year in 🇨🇦 either 😢
Oh no. Hope you get a change in the weather soon 🤞🙂
Hello Carol (chutney, Charlie Brown) and Ken.
Just watched your latest excellent and as other people say very relaxing to watch video and can’t wait to see what else the day has in store for you both.
We have a Motorhome and stay on only sites but it is nice to see some of the places you visit to give us ideas of where to go next.
I am a patient and curtious driver but can sometimes get angry with other drivers but I am going to take a leaf out of your book and not let the idiotic drivers on the road get to me anymore.
Keep up the great work and excellent driving a lesson for all of us to do the same.
Thanks Mark and Michele. Always best to stay calm when driving a vehicle ☺️ Wishing you safe and fun travels in your Motorhome. Take care ❤️
That wind sure looked cold and quite blustery.
Great vlog as always really useful advice on driving in adverse conditions. Looking forward to the next one 😃
Thanks Andrea 🙂👍
Ahh you actually passed my front door! My local pub in Clitheroe The New Inn is right next to the market carpark. I was grinning away because I also have a converted NV200 and the garage you filled up at is at the end of my street. How worlds collide sometimes!
Ha, yes it’s a small world Ava 🙂👍
Gosh it looked so cold I had to put my dressing gown on to watch! Lovely to watch with a mug of coffee on my day off from work - cannot wait until the next instalment! I love the driving advice it is really useful especially as a younger driver
Thanks CJ. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂👍
like the vid on you travels thanks lee
Cheers Lee 🙂👍
Good morning guys hope you both have a lovely weekend you definitely was out in the worst weather we had for a while take care love from Lincolnshire
We wanted to test ourselves being out in the snow and we certainly did that 🙂👍
gees, i'd love to go exploring like that. Jimmy Clithero was born in Clithero, apparently on Wilkin Street. Wonder how many people remember him, now?
We remember him. Didn’t realise he was actually born in Clitheroe 😁👍
I'm old enough to remember him,
@@lindabiggs3905 lol, thanks linda.xxxxxx
@@LifeistooshortCK cant find out how his name was the same as the town tho. his dads surname was clithero, so jimmy didnt just change it.
And I do have a small campervan and play the banjo 🪕 . It isn’t easy taking it with me but I sometimes can’t resist the temptation 😂.
Well I never! That sounds fun 😀
I’m from up North originally so seeing that snow brings back memories! That said I prefer the warmer weather down south! Thank you for posting. I love the old villages and rain just makes them look more cosy for some reason! Right I’ve ordered a curry in to warm up! Safe and happy travels! 😊
Thanks for the lovely comment Ali. Hope you enjoyed that curry🙂👍
This is turning into a very cold and wet trip for you two but it’s entertaining for me to watch here in Los Angeles. I’ve been in England when it’s wet and snowy so I can share your pain.
Ken, I have been meaning to comment on what an excellent job you do editing and scoring your videos. RUclips is very competitive these days and your content certainly holds its own, you and Carol do a lovely job.
Thank you Jay for the comment. That is such a lovely compliment. Greetings to you in Los Angeles 🙂
Thank you for your latest vlog. Love following you both on your adventures and truly inspired by you too. We’ve just bought a small camper and can’t wait to go exploring. Slowly picking up pointers from you, especially the tasty meals you cook. Looking forward to viewing what happened later that day, when you leave the pub 😁
Thanks Alison. Have fun exploring in your campervan 🙂👍
Well done knowing your limits. I've seen so many people push on regardless on trips, and get stuck in snow or mud. I always bail myself when it gets too hairy. Especially can't be easy in a small, high sided van with thin tyres and front wheel drive.
Definitely. We were well aware of the limitations of the van and certainly didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks. Will be trying to source some all weather tyres ☺️
It's funny seeing the weather. Having got our van in November it was wet a lot of the time and I'm finding it odd, but lovely, now to be able to use it with the doors open and popping up the roof without thinking about it.
It’s a revelation when you can pop the roof and sit with the side door and windows open. Roll on summer 😁🌞
@@LifeistooshortCK Different world!
Brilliant as always can't wait for next episode..I thought you might bunk down in a little hotel or guest house....Stay safe
You’ll have to keep watching Mary to see how we get on 😉👍x
Lots of grim weather on this trip but watching you travelling through the snow was great to see. Only for the brave though, as the lack of snow generally has today's drivers struggling through lack of experience when it does arrive.
We certainly learnt a lot on this trip about driving in bad weather. All good experience 🙂👍
I just love these English Villages! There is so much history in every one of them. Another great adventure! I noticed the roads are very narrow, but you both seem to be accustomed to driving on them and do very well. Have fun and thanks for taking us along.
You’re welcome Candace. Yes, we are well used to the narrow roads and are thankful we only have a small van 😁
Try driving around with a hot water bottle, with a cover, at your back. They are very comforting when it is rainy and cold.
Now that is a great idea💡 Thanks Elizebeth 😀👍
I can't wait to see how this turns out. I wish I could find a place here that serves a "Full English Breakfast". It is not something available here in Canada. So, I have to make it myself.
Thanks for watching. We would certainly miss a full English breakfast if we lived abroad ☺️
I somehow lost track of the days this week. I opened RUclips and thought...Carol and Ken! Is it Friday?! Really enjoying coming along for the ride with you two. Lifts my spirits every time. Thank you for all the effort it takes to create such engaging content.
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment 😀
Hello Ken / Carol Very nice video even with the bad weather setting in some lovely shots for us to see , the early morning drive was lovely can you fly a drone in that low light ? Clitheroe looks like a nice place the name makes me remember Jimmy a name from the past. Thanks again always enjoy your trips. have a great weekend take care .
Hi Shaun. We couldn’t fly the drone much because of the rain and sleet! Ah yes, Jimmy Clitheroe, a memory from our youth ☺️ Have a great weekend 🤗
superb recording~ 👍
Oh my gosh that looked cold until you found those nice places to hunker down and get some nice food and drink. What a pity it didn't stop raining so you could enjoy that lovely place. Having said all the it was lovely for us watching when it snowed as it looked so beautiful. I loved that statue of you Ken did you pose for that and did you manage to get some new boots as yours were leaking? You will have to go back there when the weather's nice as it does look like a lovely place. Great video and music as usual guys. Thanks.
We were so glad the pub was open! We did enjoy the drive in the snow as the scenery was just beautiful. Didn’t get new boots in Clitheroe unfortunately. Will definitely be going back to that region in better weather 🙂 Thanks for watching 👍
Being another soft southerner from hampshire the last real snow we had was about 2009
Good job you didn’t attempt to go over Pendle
😁👍
Just found yr channel, subbed, awesome xxx
That’s great. Thank you 🙏
What pretty villages! Everywhere looks even prettier when it’s snowed but I wouldn’t want to be driving in it. You left us on a cliffhanger there didn’t you? 😁😁
another great vlog, looking forward to see what happened. hope all is well, take care of yourselves
Thanks Peter. The next episode will be on Monday so not long to wait ☺️
That weather that you experienced in Lancashire was nothing really compared to what we can get. We get used to it and carry on regardless. I've driven up and down the roads that go via Pendle Hill many a time with at least a foot of snow. When it freezes is when there can be a problem. Yes, the correct tyres do make a difference. I moved over the hill to Clitheroe in the 70s when I got married, but now live back over the hill. By the way, the petrol station at the end of Chatburn road that you filled up at, has been the most expensive petrol station in the area for donkeys years. I saw a relative of mine in your video, so I'll have to tell her that she's now famous 🤣🤣. There was an outdoor shop right by the market (Ken Varey) which could have fit you up with some decent boots.
Thanks for all the info Annie, it certainly pays to have local knowledge 😁 We are hoping to visit Pendle Hill and explore more of the area on a return visit in better weather 🙂👍
@@LifeistooshortCK The sculpture trail at Barley is a nice easy walk and if you're feeling energetic and plan to walk up Pendle, the 'steps' route up the hill at the big end is really tough on the legs. Easier to go up the little end, walk along the top and come back down via the steps. George Fox had his vision on Pendle Hill way back in the 17th century. Talk to the staff in the shop at Pendle Heritage centre in Barrowford, they will give you all the info on the area. If you're in the area on a day where there is some wind, the 'Singing Ringing Tree' panopticon at the top of Burnley, will provide you with some very eerie sounds. A few years later another one was built in the USA. Wycoller village is worth a visit and has a nice tea room......it is residents only parking in the village, but there are car parks on the outskirts.
@@LifeinLancashire Wow, thanks for all the information. I have marked places on my map for future reference. The Singing Ringing Tree looks amazing 😃
@@LifeistooshortCK You're welcome 🙂. If you know anyone with kids that are interested in witches ......on September 17th, they are hoping to get the Guinness World Record back to Lancashire from Spain (record initially set by Lancashire in 2012 during the 400 year anniversary) for the largest gathering of witches 🧙♀️......see 'Pendleside Witchfest' for details
Booths my favourite supermarket, being a Lancashire lad. one of the few supermarkets that have a real Deli and butchers from locals. hope it doesn't change with the change of ownership
Didn’t know they had changed hands. We don’t have them down south 😕
Afternoon folks. oh my goodness what torrid weather to have to get out and stretch your legs! cliff hanger again Ken...well we definitely hope that's not what's to come! 🙄🚙🐕

Darn it! You missed the bit where the streets were paved with gold & just skipped to the bit where the pavements were covered with slush again. Always happens to me too.
😂
There are two things in life that you should never cheap out on and that is your boots and your mattress because when your not in one you are in the other, mountain warehouse is no place to be buying waterproof boots and I’m not surprised the current ones you have are letting in water if purchased from this Chinese outlet. May I suggest the Danner mountain light boots? Expensive but they will last you the rest of your life 👍
I will check out those boots. Thanks for the recommendation 🙂👍
Excellent as always…I have been awaiting your next blog.

It was filmed on 19th February 2022.
lol Ken, could have saved a piece bread to clean the plate completely for them
Haha 😂
How long ago was this? I was In Clitheroe when it last snowed, I went to visit the castle and it was beautiful in the snow. I just fell lucky. I got an amazing photo of the WW1 soldier in front of the castle with the snow falling. Wonderful.
