    I'll never understand why people give the WO album so much flack. I personally love the album and it's one of my favorite albums. And this track is one of the many shining moments on the record.

      Tyler Talks! I completely agree with you man, you summed it up. I thought this was one of her top 4 best Body of Works. It comes in at #4 behind #3 Take Me Higher, #2 The Boss, and The Greatest of all her work, the#1 Diana LP with Upside Down and My Old Piano cuts on it. All 8 songs off that album were the Jams.Have Fun Again, Tenderness, Friend To Friend, I'm Coming Out, Now That You Are Gone, and Give Up were all rocket hits on the Diana LP.

      Hey Tyler,
      I agree 💯. Yes, it's one of my favorites as well. I always listen to all of the Workin OT bonus tracks from the CD as well. All the songs were pretty strong from this collection. Bottom Line, Bitter with the Sweet, Paradise, Just Say You Can, Stand Up and Stand Tall, Goin Thru the Motion, and this track. Heck, it was Poppin from top to bottom. I think they wanted to cast her in a boat of just love Ballard's. However, Ross has always been very versatile and cross and sing various of genres. Disco, Club/Dance, Pop, Soul, New Jack Swing, and Jazz. No one does it better! It's a reason why they call her the Boss. A career that has expanded strong for over 5.5 decades! You go Ross!

    I was born in 88, so this was the first album made after I came along. It is quite looked over and had great tunes all through. The New Jack Swing/rally sound on certain tracks turned people off, but I give her credit for trying new things. It only proved her voice is versatile on all kinds of music.

    This song reminds me of my mom, the days that my siblings and I were growing up. As a family we always got together with aunt's, uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents and cousins. We always had fun together especially at family reunions. I have this one great- aunt in particular that I have always been close with. My mother was always close to this aunt as well and they talked everyday 2 and 3 times a day until my mother passed away in 2007. Her passing really took a toll on the family especially since she was my grandfather's only daughter. My aunt and I usually talk everyday 2 or 3 time a day like her and my mom. Unfortunately we just found out that she's sick as well and it broke my heart. I don't know what I'm going to do without her so I just sit and think about the good times that we have had.😢

    This is a good song and her WO album probably would have been better received if someone else recorded the songs. I remember hearing that around this time, many in the Black community (the community this album was specifically targeting) felt like she was trying to get back in their good graces after literally two decades of essentially ignoring them so she could “crossover”. Way back since she was with the Supremes she catered to White audiences. Then, in the mid-80s when it was realized White folks pretty much weren’t checking for her anymore, she did what all Black artists do who “crossover” and then their novelty inevitably wears off; they pretend they’re going “back to their roots”. Most Black people were ambivalent, at best, about Diana Ross at that point in time. Which is why a song like this, which really was a quite common sound for R&B at the time (for instance, “This House” doesn’t sound much different than “Show Me” by Howard Hewitt), barely survives in people’s memory. Had Pebbles, Jody Watley, or even Cherelle recorded this song it would’ve probably been a much more notable
    hit.

      Hey, I completely disagree with your assessment of the CD and of
      her, during that time in 1989.
      The CD was awesome. The same energy that put his hands on the Diana Album with Upside Down, Tenderness, and My Old Piano which was Rogers along with Edwards, put his hands all over the Working OT CD. It was a masterpiece. You have to remember that in America, singers, especially female Entertainers, both Black and White after the age of 40, are typically put on the Shelf for the more up and coming artist. Whitney and Madonna were both coming into the industry and they were both in their 20s why Ross was over 40. That's typical in Entertainment for Women in Music, Acting, and News. There is always exception to the rule, but I'm talking about the Collective. Ross music was never heavily supported by Black anyway, not like people think it was. She's always was mostly admired by Blacks who liked her looks, style, and success, but never supported her. Like most Motown artists during her Era. They were mainly supported by Whites, especially, her since she was the Female Face of Motown.
      The criticism came from the album being too hip hop and the music critics felt that she was out of her element, and also, this kind of music was beneath her, not this song, but the overall CD.
      This CD did really well overseas in Asia, specifically Japan and some of China, and did really well in Australia, the UK, and Norway. She didn't really need and still do not need heavy support from the US market to have success. She's a global icon.
      On another note, Ross music had really stop being played by Pop and R & B stations after she signed with RCA and signed the largest record contract from a money value than any other artists in history and the Masses were not having that. She took control of her career and was making her own business decisions, right on wrong. Again, they did not want to see a Female Artist have so much control, especially a Black woman. America blackballed her of new music from Radio, both on the Pop and R & B side. That was a political move called from up top.
      I like her Stand. She had really matured and exuded Great Business and Financial Acumen during that tine. If the industry would have did her right after she left Motown and also returning to Motown, she would be probably be in the top five of the most record sales in the history of music Entertainment. In my eyes, she is still the greatest Female Entertainer of All-time.

    • @LeimertDreamer
      @LeimertDreamer 4 года назад +1

      gmoneyhollywood The numbers don’t lie. Whether or not you think this album was “beneath her”, the fact is this type of music was very trendy at the time, and had she had a better reputation among the community this album was targeting (Blacks), it would have sold more. If White and other ethnicities were still even remotely interested in her by this time, it would have sold more. The late 1980s in general were not particularly kind to Diana Ross. Even her album before this (“Red Hot Rhythm & Blues”) sold poorly.
      And before somebody tries to say age was a factor, STOP. Several of her peers of the same age (such as Patti LaBelle) were still selling well in the late 1980s. As much as I love her, Diana Ross’s problem by then had been that she burned far too many bridges and built a reputation that ended up damaging her own career commercially. Name another million selling album from her after 1985. Name another Top 10 hit. I’ll wait.

      @@LeimertDreamer, I don't think you are understanding me here. I never said this CD was beneath her. I said the Music Critics thought that this CD sounded too Hip Hop and that they didn't think it was a fit for her style. I clearly stated that Nile Rogers produced this Album and I actually think that it's one of her best body of works. This was Hip Hop and not your quote on quote Soul or Traditional R&B. It was made to capture the very young 18 to 35 crowd not the matured crowd like her other music she put out for Motown since her return and after the WO album.
      Again, you are not understanding the politics of the music. I said that she was blackballed from American Radio because of the RCA business deal that took place when she first left Motown. Year by year, American Radio stations were not playing her music, period, but she was always getting good support overseas.
      As far as age, don't even put Patti in the same class as Ross, yes same era, but not in the same class.
      Patti has always been a Soul Singer, Ross never has. Patti has never recorded a Hip Hop CD either. Ross, is a Pop, Jazz, and Dance chart success that just so happen to have certain crossover hits that debut or done well on the R&B charts from time to time.
      Also, if you remember in my earlier reply, I said that there is always an exception to the rule. I will stick with my earlier statement that most Female Entertainers are put on the shelf after 40. Also, how many actual female singers run their own business and make their own decisions and negotiate the way that they want to. Not many, but Ross has and is still in charge fully of her career decisions.
      I am going to close the book on this subject regarding Ross.
      She has always put out very good music. There is a lot of good music that does not get played on the airwaves or never see the time of day. If you define what's good music by commercial radio and what Billboard's dictates, than you are at a lost. The Music Industry gives airplay to whom they tell the radio stations to give airplay to, and for the last 30 years, it has yielded a lot of junk.
      Also, you may be right about her burning some Bridges.
      Nevertheless, I do respect your observation regarding the take on her career since the mid 80s.

    • @LeimertDreamer
      @LeimertDreamer 4 года назад

      gmoneyhollywood I respect what you’re saying as well, though I’m not sure what your initial reply had to do with my original post. And this album was not pure hip-hip or R&B; it was NEW JACK SWING which is a fusion of the two aforementioned genres and again, was very popular at this time. But anyway, I think we can close this discussion. History is done and whatever the reasons, this very decent album was unfortunately underrated and not heard by many. The music industry is indeed fickle.

    • @SmoothCinnamonX
      @SmoothCinnamonX Год назад

      @@LeimertDreamer The thing nobody ever talks about, when you mention Patti LaBelle for example, is that Patti hardly had any huge success (aside from Lady Marmalade) until 83 when she released If Only You Knew. In a sense, she was kind of like a "new" artist in the 80s and early 90s, because most of her records sold "aluminum" until then. She scored a massive R&B hit and a Gold album, then MCA signed her and she really took off, scoring a #1 album in 86. Diana Ross, for comparison, had enjoyed an uninterrupted string of GOLD, PLATINUM, even Multiplatinum singles and LPS for over 20 years. The industry and the public was simply giving her more overlooked contemporaries a chance. Also, Miss Ross' album sales, aside from Lady Sings The Blues, were usually tied to having hit singles. Opposite of say, Barbra Streisand, who from the very beginning was much more of an album artist than a singles artist, and always sold a million albums each time out regardless of whether she had a hit single.
      Patti's success, Tina's success, in the 80s, were really when they arrived.
