I was lucky enough to see Nanci perform at Cambridge Folk Festival a couple of times over the weekend when she was still fairly unknown in England. Indeed I had not previously heard her astonishingly beautiful music myself prior to that. I instantly fell in love with her songs and incredible voice and bought every single album they had at the record stall, then went on to get every other available I could find. Rest Sweetly songbird, you are remembered, loved and missed. Blessed Be.
The first time I heard this song it talked directly to me. It still does. I loved Nanci's Irishness and her Texas beauty. She blessed us all. Thank you.
I fell in love with Nanci Griffith music when I heard her live album "one fair summer evening" for the first time. To me it's one of the best live records ever. Some years later I had a job to do in Dublin, Ireland and what did i read? "Nanci griffith live at the Olympic Theater": I bought tickets for both nights and were so happy to get the opportunity to see her perfoming live! Coming from germany it would have been my only chance ever.

I first heard One Fair Summer Evening sat in the car with my Dad when I was about 14. I was instantly in love and he said that I could be as good as her one day. That never happened but I still love to sing along anyway. It was Love at the Five and Dime that got me. Reminded me of Tom Paxton's story telling intro-ing a song. I wish I could post a picture but I managed to get an old promo poster from a magazine that I have framed :)
She is/was a peach so clear and simple. My favourite is gulf coast highway. Her voice is so precise. Though I like the way Willie Nelson does the male part (with emmy lou) better than the one on her version.
I have always loved Nanci Griffith, Such a powerful, angelic, underated voice. And yet she always seemed so very fragile. A beautiful voice we have lost. Rest peacefully, Miss Griffith, You impacted my life. Thank you.
I so well remember the first time I heard Nancy Griffith. She was singing this song, the speaker a little too high on the treble on my buddy's cassette player, whispering in the middle of the night on the bridge of ship in the middle of the sea. I went on to find everything I could from Nancy. And when she said "bless the ships at sea" on her live album, I just knew that she was talking directly to me. I imagine everyone felt that way about her music and lyrics. She was speaking directly to all of us. And now we are all sharing the loss and speaking directly to her when we say she was unique, passionate, so incredibly talented and taken from this world way too soon. Please rest with the same peace that you have let all of us feel with your music, Nancy.

Like many of her songs, this one talks to that beautiful lonely space in the poet's heart. Even when we're surrounded by people who love us, there is that wild lonesome place inside that will never be tamed. Thank you, Nanci. Rise on those blackbird's wings.

This was the first song I ever heard of NG that made me weep and after all these years still tears up my heart. What a rare voice and talent. When I heard of her passing, I felt the grief of losing something precious.
Every time I hear this song it brings up the deepest of emotions. Nanci is a true gift to us listeners and she along with Kate Woolf and Patti Griffin make up a triumvirate of favorites for me. Love you, Nanci!

Oh, I wish that you would call
We have not spoken since last fall
That smoky conversation's coming home
Do I just read between your lines
Yeah it could be this winter wine
So sweet upon my tongue tonight
It recalls your tender eyes
And I need more than a whisper
So much more than a whisper
It takes more than a whisper
To wake this weary fool
Oh give me more than a whisper
If you're saying I love you
Cause it's the whispers that I've never understood
And it's snowing up in the northlands
I read your warm words from the plains
While the poets say that I should never
Be thinking of you this way
They say that I misread your lines
Because I've been lonely all my life
And I'd be reaching for some silver
And leave my heart out in the fire
And I need more than a whisper
So much more than a whisper
It takes more than a whisper
To wake this weary fool
Oh give me more than a whisper
If you're saying I love you
Cause it's the whispers that I've never understood
Well I will drink my winter wine
When I get home I'll change my life
I'll only whisper that I love you
In those smoky bars at night
And though the poets say I'm lonely
There's still this woman here inside
And I've never been a fool
When my heart was on the line
Cause I need more than a whisper
So much more than a whisper
It takes more than a whisper
To wake this weary fool
Oh give me more than a whisper
If you're saying I love you
Cause it's the whispers that I've never understood
