When we lost John Prine, it hurt like hell. Now we are all feeling the pain of loss once again. Nanci was a gift from God to a hurting world. i hope she finds peace now.
Lesson for today... "If we poison our children with hatred, then a hard life is all that they'll know." RIP. Thank you for the lovely music and humane thoughts.
Here because I just learned of this incredible performer's passing...just when we need these voices the most they are leaving us...please remember the message..."and if we poison our children with hatred then a hard life is all that they'll know."
It's artists like Nanci,Townes Van Zant,Guy Clark,Peter Rowan, and countless others, that make me appreciate, and feel fortunate that I was raised in the Lone Star state.
Performance date 9 March 1992 I love so much this artist, Nanci. I love how she writes, I love her voice, her singing and music: her songs offer unique emotions. And I love her sincerity, her honest and clean face and I love her grace, her natural elegance. I love this song of the combative Nanci. Nanci is unique. RIP Nanci, marvelous woman, wonderful artist
This song was my introduction to Nanci so many years ago on the Today Show, of all places. What a gem! My heart is broke. I'm in tears listen to this and recalling the times I saw her in concert and all the times I've enjoyed her wonderful music. When she visited Burlington, VT there was still a Woolworths on Church Street. It even had a lunch counter! Before the concert she went there for a visit. Love at the five and dime for sure!! RIP, you beautiful person.
I listened to Nanci when I was younger and revisited her now. I still remember every word. She wrote songs that will live forever. This was my favorite too. Rest in peace Nanci Griffith. Love to you.
This song has been on my mind too much lately in America ❤ I'll miss you Nanci I love you you always made me cry, but now I'm at least glad everyone will finally hear you, Angel ❤💭💙
Absolutely brilliant. Nancy was one of the most important musical performers of our time. I hope shes in heaven. Her song 'Late Night Grand Hotel' tears me up every time.
She recorded " from a distance" way before Bette Midler, and did it with such grace, and I twirled to the awesome remix of her "late night grand hotel" she was amazing ✨💕💔
If I'm understanding this correct Nanci wrote this. What a great and powerful song especially for today with all the violence and school shootings. Love her music!!! Her voice is the best! I still believe..
Someone posted one of her songs a few days ago with her passing - I had never listened to her music before or known about her. After listening to that song I fell in love with her voice & her music. Such a beautiful person, I now miss her as though I've known her for many years. I'm so sad that she's gone - she left us way too soon. What a hidden gem to me. RIP Nanci - now I'm hooked on you.
Very nice, and also powerful Song ... I wouldn't dare, to draw a borderline between Rock and Country because of songs like this ... I hope .. Nanci would be in heaven as a sweet angel ... She reminds me at the daughter of my aunt ... ( member of the Watchtower Society ... ) I am not allowed, to like her too much ... opposite to Nanci ( in heaven ... As I hope ! ) Thank you very much for sharing this song!
Bless you for sharing one of her classics. I listened to her recordings over and over 20+ years ago. Seeing her perform this heartfelt song is a real treat.
I only saw Nanci live one time...having a picnic under a huge Oak in Birmingham, AL...a free concert at a park bandshell...I knew nothing at all about her. That was the first time she brought a tear to my eye...many followed. This is first time I am seeing this video...not sure how I missed it...I thought I had seen them all. I find it amazing how true this song has remained over the years. And...Like Nanci...I never mastered driving on the left side of the road. RIP!
My Dad introduced me to this song. A classic. Gets to an honest truth about living. I'm also a sucker for an Irish accent thanks to my Mom. Soulful, true song and voice. Make me tear up. I feel it deeply. 😥🙌💚
Nanci just makes me nostalgic and homesick for Austin Texas, My life is here in Lakeland Florida now,but my family and heart will always be there, and she is a pillar in that town to say the least...
A hard life indeed...& we seem to not be learning too well from our mistakes & making things harder. Nanci Griffith, you left this hard life yesterday (Friday 08-13-2021) & you'll be sorely missed wonderful lady. Godspeed, fly high, soar...& rest well. See you down the road sister.💔
amazing performance, amazing angel of music, ty nanci for all of your vocals and songs....i am blessed to listen.... may you enjoy the kingdom of heaven forever.. RIP
I was bowled over the first time I heard this, many years ago. Hearing it again reminded me of a movie titled "Mickybo and Me", about two Irish kids, one Catholic, one Protestant, growing up during "the Troubles", who attempt to recreate the main plot points in their favorite movie, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", including robbing a bank and running away to Australia ---- but political strife cannot be so easily escaped. An excellent movie.
Never had a crush as hard as you girl, wow I miss you. You never settled for good, Threadgills/Armadillo anywhere. God damn we all adored you, we all miss you. Won't ever b another Nanci. An Austin snowflake.. got a bucket of tears woman, mostly for all the joy u gave us, some r selfish, cause u left us. No matter, I miss I'll miss you til I c u on the other side. U well u know
So I'm petioning to get a Nancy statue in Austin. Yup ím James, birth name in Galway Shameus. Nothing ever been on this planet better than Nanci, nothing. I'm hard core West Texas red dirt. We all wished we were Nanci's fancy.. now I'm crying adios
I am a backseat driver from America They drive to the left on Falls Road The man at the wheel's name is Seamus We pass a child on the corner he knows And Seamus says, "Now, what chance has that Kid got?" And I say from the back, "I don't know." He says, "There's barbed wire at all of these exits And there ain't no place in Belfast for that kid To go." It's a hard life It's a hard life It's a very hard life It's a hard life wherever you go If we poison our children with hatred Then, the hard life is all that they'll know And there ain't no place in (Belfast) for These kids to go A cafeteria line in Chicago The fat man in front of me Is calling black people trash to his children He's the only trash here I see And I'm thinking this man wears a white hood In the night when his children should sleep But, they slip to their window and they see him And they think that white hood's all they need It's a hard life It's a hard life It's a very hard life It's a hard life wherever you go If we poison our children with hatred Then, the hard life is all that they'll know And there ain't no place in (Belfast) for These kids to go I was a child in the sixties Dreams could be held through TV With Disney, and Cronkite, and Martin Luther Oh, I believed, I believed, I believed Now, I am the backseat driver from America I am not at the wheel of control I am guilty, I am war, I am the root of all evil Lord, and I can't drive on the left side of the road It's a hard life It's a hard life It's a very hard life It's a hard life wherever you go If we poison our children with hatred Then, the hard life is all that they'll know And there ain't no place in (Belfast) for These kids to go
I’m jammin’ on this, St. Patrick’s Day 2024, and I love it every bit as much as I did when I first heard it back in the late’80s!
When we lost John Prine, it hurt like hell. Now we are all feeling the pain of loss once again. Nanci was a gift from God to a hurting world. i hope she finds peace now.
XOXOXOXO
The first time I saw Nanci Griffith, she opened for John Prine at Zellerbach hall UC Berkeley. Love her & miss her.
It still makes so sad that Nanci is no longer with us.

Nanci was my Daughter"s favorite singer/songwriter
I love this song. RIP Miss Nanci, and thank you for this song and I wish more people would listen and learn.
Love the drummer in this version. The Celtic Connection is very good but this is likely the best snapshot of Nanci at her best. Rest in Peace.
When Nanci died I learned this song immediately, and my audiences are always deeply moved by the song--just as I am
Same here.
Heartbroken today. She was all of ours angel.
Rest easy Nanci. You had a beautiful voice.
So Brave, so beautiful, to sing out about the impact of hate and the need for compassion. Thanks
For me one of the songs of the century - and she's one of the singer/songwriters of the century...

At 2:00..."at night when his children should sleep"..The kids know the kids know and stuff it away..
Robert Fulghum wrote, " Worry not that your kids don't listen to you; worry instead that they are watching you, *always*".
So sad. What a loss.

💖💖💖
Spéirbhean, I always say, spéirbhean
❤
Awesome. My favorite performance, butI don't think Nanci Griffith would be wearing a pin with Pres. Lyndon Johnson's photo in the 1990s.
As a life long liberal and Texan, she often wore her "All the Way with LBJ" pin when performing.
Try singing this in Texas today.
hah.
im apsyche patient and work 2 jobs which im on call and made a life for myself
can't please all
My daddy called black people trash but I knew better then and I know better now. Hatred can be taught but it doesn't have to be recieved.
RIP
An interesting that I just noticed, her drummer is playing left handed. This is something that is rarely seen.
4/8/2022 STILL TRUE
Last of the true believers.
Some great songwriting here. Add it to the Great American Songbook!!
I am a backseat driver from America
They drive to the left on Falls Road
The man at the wheel's name is Seamus
We pass a child on the corner he knows
And Seamus says, "Now, what chance has that
Kid got?"
And I say from the back, "I don't know."
He says, "There's barbed wire at all of these exits
And there ain't no place in Belfast for that kid
To go."
It's a hard life
It's a hard life
It's a very hard life
It's a hard life wherever you go
If we poison our children with hatred
Then, the hard life is all that they'll know
And there ain't no place in (Belfast) for
These kids to go
A cafeteria line in Chicago
The fat man in front of me
Is calling black people trash to his children
He's the only trash here I see
And I'm thinking this man wears a white hood
In the night when his children should sleep
But, they slip to their window and they see him
And they think that white hood's all they need
It's a hard life
It's a hard life
It's a very hard life
It's a hard life wherever you go
If we poison our children with hatred
Then, the hard life is all that they'll know
And there ain't no place in (Belfast) for
These kids to go
I was a child in the sixties
Dreams could be held through TV
With Disney, and Cronkite, and Martin Luther
Oh, I believed, I believed, I believed
Now, I am the backseat driver from America
I am not at the wheel of control
I am guilty, I am war, I am the root of all evil
Lord, and I can't drive on the left side of the road
It's a hard life
It's a hard life
It's a very hard life
It's a hard life wherever you go
If we poison our children with hatred
Then, the hard life is all that they'll know
And there ain't no place in (Belfast) for
These kids to go
