  • Digimon World 1 & 2 are worlds apart.
The first Digimon World game was a flawed game, but it was an interesting flawed game. Gamers that could look past it's short comings would at least find an interesting experience. The same cannot be said of Digimon World 2. Digimon World 2 is a very by the numbers JRPG that combines a bit from the mystery dungeon series and Final Fantasy..... and manages to mess both of them up. Gone is the uniqueness of the original game and in its place is grinding. Copious amounts of grinding, but that said, can the addition of new Digimon, mega forms, and DNA Digivolving carry this game beyond its short comings? Let's find out!

This is probably the most accurate review of this game that I've found. I loved it growing up but I never realized how unbearably slow it takes to do anything in this game until I tried playing it again recently. The movement of the characters, the movement of your digi-beetle, the transition to the battle screen, the delay before your digimon attacks, etc. It's honestly incredibly agonizing to the point I don't understand how I put up with it as a kid. It feels like the PS1 is constantly struggling to render this game properly, when it doesn't even look that visually impressive compared to some of the other high profile RPG's on the system.
That's what really kills it for me. I could deal with all the other issues if the game just moved at a reasonable pace, but it just does not, at all. I'm playing it on an emulator now and I basically have to leave the speed up button constantly to get anything done in a reasonable amount of time, even when I'm not grinding. I'm still committed to finishing it but mostly just for the sake of closure.
It's really a shame because I feel like there was potential here to have a good RPG, but they just botched it totally.

    • @InfiniteComboReviews
      @InfiniteComboReviews  3 года назад +3

You nailed it on the head. I would have mentioned all of those little issues, but the video would have been over an hour. Also you aren't the first person to mention playing on a sped up emulator. Seems to be the only way to really play it without going crazy. This game did have potential, but it just didn't live up to it. Get that closure!

@@InfiniteComboReviews For me, it was just the lag and lack of dungeon design that really felt weird to me. It’s funny how this is the direct sequel to the first game’s Digital World while Next Order is a side sequel continuing Mameo and Analogman’s fight in another Digital World entirely.
Digimon World 2 also had a major bug that will freeze the game. This is caused by the attack Shadow Scythe and Clockmon’s attack going after one another.
The only other Digimon ps1 game that froze on me was Digimon Digital Card Battle when a Gotomon was bursting out of the card during the 3D battle.

It took me a few years to realize it, but Digimon World 2, either intentionally or unintentionally, is a ripoff of the Matrix. The storyline leaves an awful lot of room for speculation and unanswered questions. What is the real world like, in this timeline? Is it beautiful, boring, or fallen in chaos? Who is Akira's family? Who is Esteena? Why did everyone choose to go to the Digital World in the first place? How did the real world respond? Are their minds stuck in the digital realm, or were they personally transported? Personally, I think it would be awesome if Netflix or someone else could make a tv series loosely based on Digimon World 2 and 3. Even poke fun at the fact that everyone else has unlimited MP, and that nobody else uses items, or has a blast gauge (DW3), except you.

DNA Digivolve was a pain to grind, being as patient as I am, I pretty much spent my entire childhood grinding this and found so many mechanics myself, in the age where google wasn't popularised. For example, in your video, you showed that you DNA digivolved a level 13 Greymon with a level 13 Airdramon, to get a Veemon. That Veemon's max potential is gonna be only a level 17 Veedramon. But if you used a level 14 Airdramon, he would become a level 18 Veedramon at max. The formula is basically Parent level + Parent level divided by 3, then multiplied by 2, and if it isn't a whole number, it is rounded down. With 5 DP though, you could get a Flamedramon instead of Veedramon for that Veemon's Champion digivolution. I'm looking forward to Digicon in February where they address queries on whether they intend to remaster any of these classic masterpieces.

Yeah, the grind really was a chore in that game, and unfortunately, despite all the time I played it. Really love this game, but never actually finished it. Honestly, I have to hardly disagree on the whole "type limitations" thing as it allows for different styles of gameplay and, you'd be surprised, it's not as hard of a limitation as it seems, as you can start working on other types as you hit a pretty early domain (I think it was boot? the metal greymon one but I did get the drops from earlier domains, so maybe even earlier). Toy cars ARE a thing there. technically, it is also pretty early in game, and it's takes not too long to actually get to area with all team things being sold without restrictions. it's just progression of the game to avoid you from being too op.
Also, digital beatles were pretty cool. I actually enjoyed being able to upgrade them. Gave a sense of progression and more reason to grind besides getting digi to 11, digivolving, then grinding them until max. Just walking in digital world always seemed to me to be dangerous and having digital beatle to be piloted by human, storing items and having tec inside it to teleport, scan area, attack, heal is cool.
I wish we would get a remaster. I'd love to hear a more mature version of what happened during blood knights attack and more about teams themselves. It could be a good base for online digimon game as I can see it being on levels of SMT Imagine if they expand on all features.

I'm glad you enjoy this game. At the end of the day all reviews boil down to personal opinions, so play what makes you happy. I understand why you like the beetle and type limitations, but I still think they are flawed mechanics that take more away from the game than they add.

  • @LeanMan82

I actually remember enjoying digimon world 2. It had a moment where I felt content with the game. Though my favorite has always been digimon world 1. Struggled with it for what felt like years (probably was like 12 months). We could never get ultimates and we would just get destroyed by the game mechanics... and then suddenly our poor champion took its last teaching lesson on the chalkboard and we thought it was going to be reborn into a digitama... when its head sank and the screen froze... we were sad... and then a thought bubble showed up... it wasn't hungry, sleepy or tired... it was evolving! it became our first andromon ... our first ultimate.
All that time sunk into that game and that moment was special for me at least. Afer that, the game got easier and we started to finally understand the evolution system and a friend had found a bunch of stats for each digimon path which greatly helped us fill out our evolution chart. Had the most fun playing digimon 1. Too bad they didn't improve on the replay cause evolving was fun but not enough quests to fill it out.
DW3, DW4 were trash. DW3 was boring af and DW4 was for babies or something. The rumble arena games were great, we used to play with the neighborhood a bunch with that! But honestly the most polished of all DW games was the card battle games. Those were deeply engaging and had all the animations. A good memories growing up playing digimon... good memories.

The grinding is the worst thing about digimon world 2
I first played it on nov 2001. Caught the special metalgreymon, train it to max level. And then grind the megadramon to max level. Dna digivolve them, get greymon, grind it until it reached wargreymon. By then it was jan 2002, only to find my save files become corrupted, after spending the whole school holiday grinding it.

Ah yes. Digimon World 2. When I played this on my PSOne as a younger tot, I just loved how the game looked, feels, and the excitement of meeting new Digimon. I stuck with my Greymon until the dungeon where you can catch a MetalGreymon (Thanks to the lack of taming Digimin tutorial). And I reached the part of the game where I defeated Chaos Lord. After that, I lost my save file due to being overwritten by a save Digimon World 3.
I'll admit, I've gotten my row of scoldings from my parents, and arguments with my brother over this game. I've played over 154 hours, and now that I am edging to my 30's, I am still in shock and wondering how in HELL was I invested with this game?? It's a DUNGEON CRAWLER with RPG Elements that are at least 20% of the entire game (the back and forths and looking for the persons needed), the grinding and the damned DNA Digivolution mechanic, and lastly, THE GAME IS SO FUCKING SLOW. I played this a few years ago, on an emulator, and I just cannot stand the normal speed! The battles, the load times, CHIEF ENGINEER CAROL AND THOSE TAPPING FEET.
This may be my younger self having the absolute patience over this, and of course loving Digimon for a fact, but seriously, Digimon World 2 is really not a good game. It's perhaps the nostalgia and simple but slow gameplay mechanics that buffs up it's charm.
But anyway! Thanks for the review, man. Looking forward for more. Cheers and +Sub for you, ser.

this may be my favorite game in the original series, but i never fault people for hating it. I think its neat people can still appreciate the good music. The game is much better on an emulator for one reason, you can just fast forward the fights! it makes the grinding WAY less tedious. It also makes going to your damn digibeetle a lot faster as well. And for some reason...the "black screen"s also can get fast forwarded through...which leads me to believe the game doesnt load slow...it just IS slow lmfao. This game can use a nice remake, with QoL improvements. Digivolution trees, a MUCH faster paced game in general, the ability to gain more than 1 freaking level per battle (making it viable to bring babies into later game content and simultaneously making the path to digivolving even easier), removal of useless padding everywhere like the colored stones that block pathways forcing you to invest in a useless digibeetle part and taking up precious inventory on useless missiles, a rework to catching digimon (its not bad in my opinion, i like that you have to kill them and get xp before they join your party), and maybe add digibeetle parts that can do things like save the coordinates of the last floor you were on, or maybe just fucking scrap it all together and let the tamer explore in the overworld, and use the digibeetle in the actual dungeons. Like making your way from file city to one of the domains, battling and recruiting wild digimon along the way, and have you manually enter the corrupted domain so you can access it with your digibeetle. I really liked you rreview, i understand the hatred but its still one of my favorite games, but to be honest, i couldnt stand the speed back then and its been a lot more fun revisiting the game through emulation than playing on my old ass ps3 lol

Probably the grindiest game of Digimon games and nothing beats that. What i love about this one is the grind aspect if all the animations were 10x faster and xp gains were faster the higher your Digimon's DP because getting Duo Scissor Claw, Tidal Wave, Grisly Wing, Armor Coating to an already high DP leveled Digimon took lots of time. Just 1 Digimon. They should have rewarded players who have high DP Digimons xp gain boost just to cut the grind in half at least, other than that the game's variety is great. Lots of Digimons to choose from and once found the Digimon end game your aiming at is where all it starts. Did a run of Duo Scissor Claw the game at the fastest way to it and the game was trivialized. Also did a run with just Viruses and oh boi Grisly Wing was a clutch help in this run since in this run you can only have 5 Moves of Non-Virus Digimons and Duo Scissor Claw is illegal in this run. The game also unexpectedly has a decent story that i didnt expect to such a game, i thought it was just gonna be "More Dungeons to Unlock as things happen" but i got invested in the story.
The Dungeons themselves were minigames as well since their randomized so you need to think about the items in your Digibeetle to what to put or just cut off like No MP items and more EP/Digibeetle HP Items.
Sadly, Digibeetle doesnt have any good customizations. You are stuck upgrading it but no personal touches unlike the other tamers youd encounter.
Is it a great digimon game? Yes, lots of digimons to choose from. Is is great of a game? Decent. If the grind was cut in half and the animations didnt take ages to finish it would be a good game. Is is good for newcomers? No, dont attempt it without Speed boosting anything or any lack of knowledge of the game, the game is unfriendly to those who are unprepared to the grind and kinda slept on tutorial on DNA Digivolutions.
Unsuprisingly this is better than World 4 Solo. In terms of being a Digimon Game, a game of its genre nor variety.

This was one of the games I grew up on. And back then it was hella grindy, but I didn’t mind it since back then I was a kid and couldn’t get a new game every week. So the grind wasn’t that bad. Now, I’m playing the Alternative version on my PS Vita, and honestly that is the best way to play this game now since there is save states. It is still grindy, but with the game being portable it is a lot easier to consume. And I do believe Alternative helps lessen the grind a bit. It definitely did with the Digi-Beetle as I’ve been able to keep up with the upgrades this time around. Though I might just be better at keeping my money in hand.
So I say, if you want to play this game, play the modded versions. Alternative in particular as it fixes some things. And if you can play it on a PS Vita or phone to have access to save states. It is still grindy as hell, but for me it has been a lot of fun. Also the Alt version gets rid of the conversation every time you come back to the city.

All I wanted to do was beat Birdramon, and it never failed to freeze before I could win and save the game, or even walk to their nest. I think most other recruitments were fine, however Birdramon was CURSED. Well, as cursed as an old scratched up CD could be lol. I've had it in my mind for a while could Digimon World 2s concepts work for as a sort of pokemon go for digimon. The 3 tamer guard clubs could easily be the 3 teams in pokemon. The battle system would be great and would work well. Keep the arena's as well so you could battle npcs or other tamers online. And an online trading database like pokemon's gts but better. Taming pokemon could be the same each type of digimon has a favorite item but you could give them items in game to tame them. Take out the tank and just have your tamer be your avatar like in pokemon go.

Modern digimon games, and even the DS games (but those are a little stricter) have level caps but it's so easy to devolve your party members and have them gain the levels back while in the reserve of and you rarely have to do this more than once or twice to get a high level final form digimon you can take to the end of the game. Get those 3 moves and you win. Don't even need items and the only remotely challenging fight will be the final coliseum battle which restricts item usage. Fitting for the only endgame fight that posed a challenge. The rest of them were crap. At least Final GAIA had a good ost.

I agree. This game suffers from so much slow stuff. It's great emulated since you can speed things up and fast forward through a lot of tedium, but it would have been so much better if the developers made it more fast paced in the first place. Even just shaving a few seconds of each battle turn, and/or removing the interaction with carol, would make the game feel so much better to play.
On revisiting the game, I actually like upgrading the digibeetle a lot. Kinda wish there was more to it than just getting better parts over time, but even so I like the sense of progression. Since I'm emulating it's easy to grind out the money for new parts. Basically required anyway so I have some dna digivolve stuff leveled.
I think another noteworthy flaw is how some attacks are basically worthless and some are good enough to plan to dna towards certain lines. Team attacks early on are just so good at shredding through encounters - but naturally even among those some are amazing and some are terrible.

      @TheRealYasri 3 года назад +2

@@InfiniteComboReviews Yeah, If you setup a button to toggle 2x-4x speed that should help were it feels like it is dragging. I get that drag feeling alot in PS1 era games. The constant feeling of like this should take 1/2 seconds but will take 10 and it happens over and over.
I recommend you give suikoden a shot. The first one isn't that long, maybe a weekend worth of play. Here is my general thoughts on the series.
      1. Good first try, snappy and sets a good base formula to work from.
      2. Lets dial it up to 11
      3. That snappyness you liked , yeah no....
      4. Oh god it burns, was made by a different team and it shows.
      5. Not as good as 2 but pretty damn good.
Between the world building, characters, themes in the first two. You could have a animated/live action show on the scale of A Song of Ice and Fire/Avater:TLAB/Lord of the Rings. A anthology series would rock. But the series is owned by Konami, and Konami is the worst....
