I believe the way you play it is the same as Carlos. I personally play it in D minor pentatonic 10th fret.....sounds exactly the same to me but is a lot easier

I've being working on Samba Pa ti. What has worked excellently for me is working on technique at least 15 minutes a day, including legato, beds and slides, before playing. Also finger indenpendency. I suggest you to try trills in all finger pairs: index/middle, index/ring, index/pinky, middle/ring, /middle, pinky, ring/pinky.
The biggest difficulty not many people talks about is mutting the unwanted strings to prevent ringing noise. There are many ways of doing that, using the edge of your hand, using the tips of your picking hand fingers . That was what really frustrated me. With all that solved, the rest is much easier, just repetition, repetition, repetition. Soon it will become automatic. Also, I divide each son in sections so I focus in a few bars each week, and then I move to the next.
