I’m impressed the Makita pulled those bolts off at such a high torque. Most impacts get their factory torque specs based on a 9/16 fastener.

Was looking at the newer model (XWT17?) for $200 on Amazon but went with this one for $146. I don't know what the extra $60 would've gave me but felt it won't matter since its primary use will be tire rotations on my Jeep.

Very thorough review. I bought this impact wrench a little over a year ago and absolutely love it. Already owned the big high-torque impact from Makita, but rarely use it now that I have this one!
I have Makita's complete line of 1/2" impacts. The 14z compact one get's used for general automotive work 95% of the time. The big 08z model never gets used and collects plenty of dust. The mid-torque get's used on those large tough susp bolts on trucks and such. Couldn't be happier with them

Here in Europe, Most Makita Hand tools are made in the UK. Bought the Makita DTW285Z Cordless Impact Wrench and super happy with it. Makita really make great tools.

Nice !! I’ve had that brand ever since 2008 I still have the old black and white 1/4 impact gun that I use every day as a mechanic .. I really like that 1/2 gun need to buy one ! I typically use my a Air gun but this is sweet fir out in the field use !

lol ya i got a compressorn recently too and then grabbed the. xwt14 but i scored a bunch air tools at Walmart for ridiculous low clearence prices it's super useful painting sanding so many uses if you haven't got one check out the quiet ridgid 4.5 200psi on tools direct outlet they deliver too i did hours of research (might as well try help with my new knowledge of compressors lol) but i.m.o. that's best features to price ratio i could find the Makita mac700(?) was other in the ~200 range....i needed something portable and some what quiet if don't check out McGraw or huskey home Depot might still have one on sale that was also good deal (my harbor freight will still honor 2-4 month expired coupons on compressors)

Upgraded from an older 18v kit. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.
That was a very good review. Only thing to make the review even better on top of a already solid review, would have to be show what the normal mode torque specs on the nuts during auto mode 2 and 3 when tightening.

Damn Tim that tool is impressive Makita has impressed me alot with the reviews of their ratchet and now their impact wrench I just recently got a 1/2 inch Hart impact wrench that has 350ft lb of fastening tork but this Makita is way out of my price range for the whole kit would my Hart be alright at loosening lugnuts on my vehicle

I appreciate the compliment, very much so. The Makita definitely has the stubby on outright power. I would have to recommend the Milwaukee if you already have M12 batteries, and you're invested in the line. The Makita has more power, and with the 18V batteries, you're going to have much longer runtimes. I would pick the Makita unless you already have M12 tools. Thanks for watching.

Those are great reviews you put up! Jus wondering why you tighten in only 5 seconds each bolt, when it is says that the tool renders it's full force in tightening after at least 6 seconds of hammering. And also - it would have been nice if you go to the limit of the torque, not just to go up to the declared one ( like you did on the Milwaukee Stubby impacts).
There is no standard in testing torque, so it's all different among different manufacturers. We decided to make our own standard, and this is tightening for 5 seconds each and loosening for no more than 10 seconds. Thanks for watching.
Just wondering if I should keep this one or go with the mid torque that has a little more power a little more pricey but want to have enough power .what do you think ? Also I have a 96 f150 that I'm working on going to have to do body bushings and front end work will this to get the job done?

For those that don't know! Download the Makita app or go on their website and view " current/all promotions"! You can view all current tool combo promotions through Makita! Just picked this up with a free 5.0ah battery!!! Local Makita dealers aren't always aware of all promotions Makita is offering so you will have to show them the add and they "should" honor it. Although, I did have to put up a little bit of a fight. In the end they have to honor it even if they have to put in an order for the combo promotion. Remember!! Manufacturers want to keep you on their platform!!! Give it a shot! Its worth a try. I believe the promotion ends April 30 2021.
Overall a good review. What you missed was the torque achieved in the three automatic modes.The auto-modes are a little confusing. For example Makita does not explain that in auto mode all the tightening is done a the "4 speed setting (we think) ." Also the Auto mode does not allow a speed setting and visa versa, that is it is either one or the other and in auto-mode the speed is chosen for you. . It would be really useful to know the torque achieved in each of the three auto modes-we thought you were going there with your cool and expensive torque measuring tool. Also, btw, the top right light on the mini-panel, we think never lights but the manual tells us nothing about that "half mountain" symbol. We just got one of these and have been experimenting with lug nuts. Trying to achieve close to 100 ft-lb reading, we have been unable. So far we are left with a "1" setting and then use a torque wrench. Thanks.

Man that’s Crazy which tools messed up on you specifically Charles Lane 27-i’ve got a bunch of Makita and Milwaukee and Dewalt and some Rigid. I don’t have one Makita tool that doesn’t work other than two of the drills the clutch won’t release the bit or spade bit but the drill still work now. the Milwaukee and another stuff I’ve got a few of their tools that just died and I think it’s because Makita had being a motor manufacture. But regardless I love all of them

Learned its power when i was going to change a wheel that had been fastened with this Makita in Mode 2, i thought that was just barely enough. But no, it was more than enough, lucky i didnt set it to full. Its easy to get fooled by the compact size, remind yourself that it is more powerful than you think.

I would like to see you put more torque on the nuts and see just how high of torque it can remove until failure like you do on your newer videos. I can't compare this to the DeWalt 12v extreme 1/2" impact until I know where this cuts out like you did with the DeWalt. I have a feeling this will remove nuts tightened to 550 ft lbs (maybe even 600) after 13 seconds or so of impacts.

There's a lot that goes into torque numbers. What were the size of the fasteners? What type of material were they? What was the thread pitch? Where the threads lubricated? Did the fasteners have a tapered edge or flat?
Before each round of testing , we typically lubricate (grease) each nut and bolt. This is done to keep from galling, and this is the same thing that manufacturers do when performing their torque tests. Without the lubrication, the test would yield more erratic results. @@Shoptoolreviews When I first had it I was taking lugs off my truck no problem, but when I took it to work it was having trouble taking off Honda lugs and even small caliper slide bolts.
Jovany Corona stubby is not a great choice for doing tires. Should have went with a mid torque for a versatile impact that can handle tires and brakes.
@@brycelund4112 Tires I can understand. But if its not ideal for brakes what is it ideal for? My 12 volt impact driver can already do mostly everything my stubby can do. To me the stubby just feels like a slight step ahead of a driver. Only slightly. And I find it really odd how people test the stubby and find themselves easily breaking loose 250 lb ft fasteners where the one I have can barely do Honda lugnuts
Jovany Corona It’s good for engine work. It’s no good for suspension if you live in the rust belt. I was considering a stubby buy after watching some videos I went with mid-torque. It has so much more power for rusted stuff. Now those lug nuts were certainly over torqued most likely by a tire shop. But If you live in the rust belt like me. Get you a mid torque impact or higher for tires brakes and suspension. I like mid torque because you can still use for stuff in the engine bay. It’s very controllable. Stubby just doesn’t have enough balls for me. I would only use the stubby for engine tear down and maybe splash Shields under the car.

But then I start using it for lug nuts, every day, then I went to use it in brake jobs, and as I saw how strong is, I went to use it in suspension work... I am really impressed!!!
Rarely do I have to use my high torque on newer cars. Since I live in the rust belt in the Midwest, I use my high torque in 10 years old or older cars, but this power tool right here is my everyday favorite. Light and powerful, really powerful.
Also has fallen from my hands working on a car on the lift.

What's the difference between the xwt13 vs the 14?
I'd love to know how it stacks up against the equiavlent Milwaukee on size and power. Pricing will vary by market but where I am it costs about 10% more than M12 Stubby 3/8" (but 10% less than the M12 Stubby 1/2"). Would that be its competitor? Or would you say it's more rivalling the M18 Mid Torque for loosening torque? Or somewhere inbetween? It's hard to gauge size without seeing them side-by-side and manufacturers' torque figures don't always correlate with actual results, so it's great to see real world tests like yours.
I would say that it's more comparable to the new M18 Compact Impact wrench, in power and size. We'll compare them pretty soon. Thanks for watching.

Would have like to know how much torque of the auto tightening so we could have an idea of the ft pounds of auto 1,2 and 3 as to me this are the most important feature of this tool which sets it apart from all the rest.One other thing is you should always test the highest fp of all wrenches
These different "speeds" or "power modes" of impact wrenches should not be trusted for any sort of setting. This will change greatly with different batteries and different charge status. Thanks for watching.

What’s the difference between the friction ring and the anvil? Which is better? Thanks!
The anvil is the 1/2" square sticking out that the sockets attach to. The "Hog-ring" or "Friction-Ring" is the little ring on the end of the anvil that retains the socket. Other options are a "Pin-detent" which works much like a ratchet, where there is a little ball-bearing with a spring on the side of one of the flats on the anvil that retains the socket. On larger anvils, like 3/4" and 1", there's also a "Pin and O-ring" that's literally a pin that slide through the socket and through the anvil, and the O-ring goes around a groove in the top of the socket to retain the pin. If you've ever seen a hole drilled through the top of an impact socket with a groove around it, that's what this is for. Thanks for watching.
For the weekend warrior changing tires at the most. Would this be suitable or should you go up in power to be on the safe side? My wheels require 120 ft-lbs for the lug nuts.
This one will serve you well. I have the XWT11Z 3 speed which has less torque than this one. The XWT11Z has 210 ft lbs of torque and 295 ft lbs of loosening torque. I've removed tires on dad's F150, my Ram 1500 & Jeep and numerous other families vehicles. Never had any issues breaking lug nuts loose. If the XWT11Z can handle all that, this impact could handle more. You will also like the size of this one the most versus the newest model out. Now I also have the bigger high torque impact just in case, but it collects dust for the most part.
I think I've had the XWT11Z for at least 4 years. Only issue I had with it is the 4 bolts came loose that the clear plastic cover covers. The plastic cover is tough to get off, have to be careful not to crack the plastic. The newest model out has these same bolts, but the heads are facing the rear of the gun instead and much easier to access.
Should be enough on a regular vehicle, My old impact only has 250ft lbs of breakaway torque and it did fine on most lugs. The one time it didn't work they were rusted/seized on and I had to use a torch, after I snapped the first stud with a big breaker bar. 🤦♂️
How different is size are the XWT14 vs the XWT17? I am stuck between the two. This will be my only impact wrench and I don't want to sell myself short if the larger one is only slightly larger but has significantly more power.
Get the xwt17 its definitely the better one for a little more money

Bought it and returned that kit back in Sept. It's not for larger fasteners like lug nuts. I went with the 12v Dewalt Extreme 3/8 brushless kit for the same amount of $$ and got 2 batteries, charger and a bag. I also picked up a no name 5.0ah 12v battery for the Dewalt from Amazon for less than $30. The 12v Dewalt took off my lugs torqued to 100 ft lbs with the 2.0ah battery while the 12v brushed Makita 1/2 wouldn't budge it with a 2.0ah, so I didn't even bother testing it with the 4.0ah. Also bought a $5 Husky 3/8 to 1/2 impact adapter to use my 1/2 sockets with the Dewalt. The Dewalt would be the better option even though its only a 3/8, but with the adapter, its a better set up from my experience on my lug nuts.

That was a really good test you did and that tool. What I think needs to be explained for some people that don’t understand or don’t use tools very often but would like to have this tool is the different types of jobs it’s capable of doing. I think your test was pretty simply explanatory for people that are in that field of work that that tool is meant for but for the people as I mentioned I only use this tool few times out of the month it would be best to explain if it’s good for car Lugnuts truck Lugnuts and etc. but I do want to thank you for the awesome testing of the tool and I will be buying one very soon because of how you explained the mechanics of the tool and I’ve been looking for something it’s not a massive tool like some of the other impact tools that Makita carries which are really great tools which is too big and heavy for what I need it for.This tool will work great what’s the type of work I do. Do the auto modes work with partial trigger application? Or do they go wide open regardless of the trigger pull? Want to know if you could thread the bolt/nut slowly and have it auto shutoff.

i Wonder if the previous m18 makes any more than 220 lb torque because now i think of it. 30 lbs is upgrade but really doesn't sound too impressive considering makita almost doubled their numbers from their last modle

I'm mainly a Milwaukee guy but I've always had an immense amount of respect and liked Makita tools. Also, they don't have annoying fanboys like rest of the tool brands. Most of the Makita guys are mad cool and don't have some crazy bias towards their brand.
I was out of state and needed an impact wrench. Home Depot didn't have any deals worth buying just for a quick fix on my car, so I picked up a Makita impact driver kit that was on sale. Even with a 1/4" hex 1/2" adapter, it was an impressive tool. Of course I returned it as soon as I got home and exchanged it for a gen 2 m18 lol.

You could buy a wilhelm skidmore to determine fastening torque. Or you can buy a hytork .70 instead 😂.
Too bad it only goes to 700 lb/ft. No one can test the high torque impacts since real tool reviews.
The Skidmore was be used by several out there, not just Daniel, including the tool manufacturers. It's kind of a boring test, so we didn't want to go that route. We're actually working on our own unique test again, so keep watching. Thanks for commenting.
