Thanks, this Sunday there will be a beginner's water gilding video, I was wondering what would go into a next stage video, so thanks for the suggestion. I would only be water gilding in that way on early Georgian frames which are fully water gilded. Most later frames would be a mix of water gilded highlights and the rest oil gilded. When I get the right frame in I'll make that water gilding video for you. R 😁
Thank you for your videos. I have done some experimental guilding with some busted mirror frame and it seemed to have worked out beautifully. However, lately, I am trying to do guilding on various objects from paper to wood, I have been so unsuccessful. I don't know why it worked out before and not now. I am in Canada. I used the DaVinci product lines, the glue, guilding paper (not real gold), etc. I also tried the water guilding, no glue. I watched this one lady who does gold guilding in churches and iconas, she just uses water -- unless I misunderstood. Anyway, I have been failing consistently. I am very happy to have found your channel. Yes, subscribed :) I am motivated again. It is just so beautiful how gold leaf guilding looks like. After I am confident and get some successful outcome, I want to try gold leafing on one of my husband's painting's frame. He used to paint large 5' x 7' paintings. He built a frame just from a simple frame moulding. I thought to give the frame a kick with gold leafing. I don't have the courage for it yet. I may mess it up and I don't like giving up. Good I found your channel.

Hi Ruth, thanks for a really good video! i’m really interested in the whole process. What is the advantage of the gilders tip being made out of card stock and not wood? Is it because the flexibility makes it easier to work with? Or because you need to changes brushes quite frequently because of wear and therefor they are cheaper to produce? I have tried to search for the information in vain so your experience with the brush would be highly appreciated!
You do need a bit of flexibility. It's light to hold so you can have a light touch. You do need replacements, mine last around 4-5 years. I have seen long wooden handles, a bit like a pip stem, where the card slots into the end.
Gosh, recently subscribed and loving your videos, do you run any courses? I am a furniture restorer and would love to have a go at gilding. Thanks for posting

Hi Ruth, I'm very interested in starting to guild but at a loss as to where to start when buying the relevant tools, at reasonable prices, to get started. There are a few suppliers but, can you recommend a gilders kit for beginners with all the essentials needed to get started gilding on to wood (bare wood)? Or a list of all the basic items to get started?. Thank you ever so much. :)
Depends if you want to oil gild then just a brush, oil size and gold. If you want to water gild then you will need whats in this video. Links in the description as to were to buy. I wouldn't buy a kit as they often come with things you don't need.

Thanks, next video will be water gilding for beginners, next Sunday. Just remove the gold with 0000 wire wool and a small bit of meths. No need to remove the bole, you can add one extre cote of bole if you felt it needed it. R

Hi, glad the videos are helping. I have my gilders tip length at half of a square of gold, around 45mm. You could go for a quarter the size of a square of gold around 20-25mm. But I wouldn't go any less than that. Very sharp scissors will cut the hair nicely.

Hi, I thought it would scratch, so I found a metal burnisher and tried it. It burnishes but it does scratch. Can you find a polished agate stone?
