Beautiful performance, deeply moving, especially the ending. At 27:57 the first violin plays the high harmonic E which represents the tinnitus preceding the composer's swift descent into total deafness in October 1874. He continued to compose, producing, in addition to this quartet, the tone poem cycle Ma Vlast (My fatherland) and 3 operas.

Very good! I like the perfect coordination in these little ritardando and a tempo again. Played with emotion and great technique.

After the habit of listening to the symphonic poem "My Homeland", the Smetana of this quartet confirms all previous good impressions. A curiosity in this quartet is to use Smetana at the end "Vivace" a "tremolo", very similar to the famous tremolo of the Octet of Schubert.

This is the best performance of this quartet of I've ever heard. That said, I don't enjoy watching the Zemlinsky play. I understand why the violist turns to the audience during his solos- it is difficult for the viola to project above the rest of a quartet. But this inevitability can be solved by switching places with the cellist. (In this quartet, his instrument is the most sonorous of the four, and the overall sound would be better balanced if he weren't facing the audience directly.) The violist's performance here is distracting.

The violist of the LaSalle quartet, or Fine Arts, used to do the same thing. I never found it distracting. They probably have their own reasons for why they prefer to sit this way, such as for example connections between the voices.

yea this is also smth i found confusing. when the violist changes positions with the cellist, the violist’s f holes r facing the wrong way and won’t project as much to the audience

It's one thing to angle the viola so the sound comes through. It's another to mug for the audience. Still, a beautiful performance.

An excellent performance but for something really exceptional go to the Meccore Quartet also on youtube.
