I was at that concert and I was right behind President Havel, I personally met with Rafael Kubelik because I worked at the AMU Music Faculty. I have wonderful memories for this concert: D
How incredible. I am envious. I saw Kubelik conduct in person just once with the Cleveland Orchestra doing Ma vlast complete in 1978. This was the only time Cleveland Orchestra has performed this work complete in its history. I was 14 years old.
unbelievable!fantastic!it’s so long long ago.

Congratulations Olga!!! A stunning memento you have
I feel so proud to be Czech while listening to this masterpiece!
je comprends votre fierté
You are right to feel that way 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This had to be so meaningful for Rafael Kubelik after being exiled form his homeland for so many years. It makes me want to cry too.
As a music teacher, I have had the blessing of teaching this wonderful piece of music over the years in great detail. This video is very affecting. Thank you for sharing, and God bless the people of Smetana's homeland!
Who could better perform this masterpiece of music than a Czech conductor with a Czech orchestra?
God bless the Czech Republic!
Btw., Bedřich Smetana had nothing to do with any republic.
@@breznik1197 exactly.
@@breznik1197 Was Smetana a bomenian? (1824)
Anyway stunning music and a very great and charismatic director. My opinion
@@gianmasini
He was born in 1824 in Litomysl, which was part of former Austrian Empire, then Czechoslovakia and current Czech republic. So yeah, he was bohemian, although born during reign of kaiser Francis I.
Kubelik was an czech and a world conductor. This orchestra is a union from Czech and Slovak philharmonic orchestras
This concert, on June 9, 1990 was held a bit less than a month after Kubelik's historic appearance conducting the same music at the opening concert of that year's Prague Spring Festival on May 12, 1990. Despite the compromises of an outdoor performance this might be the most powerful recording of Ma vlast to be found.
+David J Gill - most importantly - for this concert united Czech Philharmonic and Prague Symphony Orchestra - really unique and unusual moment....
They risked so much. The exposed countless priceless instruments on open air stage. If it started to rain the damage would be devastating.
Not mentioning acoustic problmes. The sound dissapears without reverb, which is very bad especially for wooden section and namely flutes. They sound like a military band. 8:26 just one example
Old Town Square in Prague, few months after the Velvet Revolution. Very emotional homecoming for the conductor Rafael Kubelík, who lived in exile during the communist rule. He came out of retirement just for this performance.
Praha , Staroměstské nám. rok 1990 :D super koncert a úžasná Česká filharmonie řízená Rafaelem Kubelíkem :D
Grande Smetana.
Emotional...Praha is favorite city in Europe
Always some complain "too fast"! That comment ignores the significance of the occasion viz Prague Spring". This music contains the pride these people feel at being free at last. God bless them!
How odd - this is precisely the tempo I'm used to hearing it
I LOVE THIS! It takes me back to my first hearing of this marvellous piece, 1957-8 in Washington, D.C. favored recording played by friends with classy musical tastes.
IMHO, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed
I can only say stunning director and stunning music.
In a stunning town.
🕊👍👏🏿👍👏🏿Pekny den, ...diky za klasicku Smetanovu hudbu....🇨🇿🇸🇰🌍🗺

Rozhodně menší než Vy. U Vas je to geneticky dané, máte to v rodině. Takže těžko můžeme byt větší než ta Vaše.
That is absolutely true.
Truth Wins! ...and we had freedom! see the views of Prague before tourism? This was the best time ever. This is the most moving concert. Thanks for posting!
So much of history, culture and good music! My most favourite of all time!

probably best classical music live performance ever recorded...
Rafael Kubelík
This is by far the best vesion of ma vlast I've ever heard.
Try Gimnazija kranj a school orchestra of 17 to 23 year old this version is too fast ,
its not a race
This is not Ma Vlast. This is Vlatava, just second part of six symphonic poems Ma Vlast... ;)
Pavel Večeřa I was going to ask the difference between Vltava and Ma Vlast.
Thank you!!!

This is a once-in-a-lifetime dream recording of Smetana's Moldau. Rafael Kubelik conducting the Czech Philharmonic filmed in video in an outdoor concert in Prague! A truly priceless record of one of the 20th century's greatest conductors.
Nádherné!! A tá práca dirigenta, niečo neskutočné!!! Takéto niečo by sa malo organizovať každý rok, nech vidí celý svet akú máme bohatú kultúru! A aj my Slováci, by sme si mali vstúpiť do svedomia a viac upevňovať vzťahy s Vami bratia Česi.
This famous part is dedicated to the longest of Czech rivers, Vltava (German name "Moldau"). This performance took place on Old City Square of Prage, around 500 meters from Vltava's riverbed.
What wonderful music. I could listen to this all day everyday.
Naprosto dokonalé,Pan Kubelík a mistři nástrojů,
Excelentní interpretace a podání Smetanovy Vltavy ♥️🇨🇿 bravo 👏!

"Homeland" indeed. After Habsburg, Austro-Hungarian, German, and Soviet rule Czechia had finally won it's freedom. This concert took place just months after the "Velvet Revolution" and it even predates the formation of the Czech Republic by a few years. The curtain had been lifted and anything was possible in those days. To have a master Czech conductor leading not one, but three, great Czechoslovakian orchestras in Bedrich Smetana's masterwork in his homeland for his homeland's newly freed people is simply extraordinary. Kubelik preserved their great musical heritage for all of humanity with his podigious recording career spanning over 40 years. Many of his performances, depite their age, I still consider to be definitive and will never be matched. God bless you, Rafael!
Lytton Martin in Austro Hungarian Czech got more freedom than under Masaryk and Benes
depends on the period-by 1800,czech chulture, language, literature and the national political life was nearly extinct. But last 50 years of Habsburg rule could hardly be described as 'opressive', that is the fact. Regarding Masaryk period- you could hardly find more progressive democracy in Europe outside the UK.... Benes period has been product of events originating in the rise of nazism , which was totally out of control for this unfortunate politician
in fact, it was an orchestra created from three great orchestras from former Czechoslovakia (not Czechia!): the Czech Philharmonic, the Brno Philharmonic and the Slovak Philharmonic www.filharmonie-brno.cz/koncert-vzajemneho-porozumeni-1990-p169.html
And they are again under foreign rule, under EU and NATO.
are you serious , like everyone in Europe specially the west has been under the US empire protection and influence since the end of the Cold War for the east and since 1945 for the west
"Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,
Who never to himself has said,
'This is my own, my native land!'"
just a grammatical correction in translation. "Ma vlast" is feminine, therefore instead of translating as "My Fatherland", correct translation is "My Motherland". Thank you for attention.
That is not completely as simple as you put it, Lenka :) Read this: www.dailywritingtips.com/motherland-or-fatherland/ Regards, Ray
Dear Ray, thank you for the link. I found it interesting. In Czech language grammar where we divide nouns and adjectives into three categories according to its grammatical "gender" (femininum, musculinum and neutrum), however, "Vlast" is in the category of femininums. Therefore, "Vlast" has to be translated as motherland. Cheers, Lenka
I believe Smetana's Czech was quite poor in writing. So if he wrote his music in German (from which the first English translation was made)... "My Fatherland" it is.
+Lenka Hadravova
And correct translation of "židle" is feminachair and what about "pitomost"?
+Lenka Hadravova I have a question. What is the your-correct translation of czech word "otčina"?
Preciosa interpretación
Uma peça belíssima para um Autor espetacular. Magnífica condução. Orquestra perfeita!
This is so amazing beautiful !!!!!!

I translate Ma vlast as My Country. And leave you to fight over male/female, because in English we do not ascribe gender to inanimate objects.

meraviglioso....
When freedom finally came to former Czechoslovakia 💕
This is by far the fastest version I have heard by far. I had to check that I hadn't changed playback speed to 1.5. Sorry although I enjoyed that it was played by a massive orchestra in a beautiful setting it was to rushed.
I understand your point, and yes, it is fast, but that just makes it so exuberant. I love slower presentations, too, though, which give the feeling of a calmly flowing river. How to choose? Maybe have them both and listen to one or the other, depending on your mood?
Pane Kubeliku děkuji.
So beautiful and touching.
Can't believe it's been almost 35 years ago. What a perfect choice of "My Homeland" right after the fall of communism and return of the conductor from exile, Rafael Kubelik. 8:33 in sunglasses Czech president Vaclav Havel.
Nezapomenutelný zážitek! Moc děkuji :)

Smetana: Ma vlast (My Fatherland)
A deeply affecting performance and video. Stunning.
If you liked this version listen to the even more wonderful performance by Kubelik conducting the Chicago Symphony on Mercury Living Presence records from 1951. It's much more lush and soulful, in my opinion and he takes it at a much more leisurely tempo which really brings the flow of the river into your mind....
Sorry but it was much better on place, video is not good; I was there. Also no one plays Ma Vlast as good as Czech symphony orchestra because they plays their patrie and know places, rythmes, history and beauty. I do apologize, but european symphony orchestra have that feeling of the emotion you don't find other continents - despite perfection... Kubelik was czech. Only people who know image behind can give the soul to it and the own words of Kubelik :"No other musicians can play this work in this way," as Kubelik said after these concerts"!
How utterly splendid! And such surrounds! Just exquisite!

No a pak se tam objeví arogantní dement v tmavých brýlích a kouzlo skladby jde do háje.
