  • Subdued Excitement In Downtown Bellingham Washington. Downtown Bellingham WA has many restaurants, clubs and bars to keep you entertained or at least distracted day and night. Many club venues have live music at night and on weekends.
The Downtown area near Bellingham's waterfront has an upscale urban village look and feel that has been intentionally fostered to help local businesses compete with other larger shopping corridors like Guide Meridian Ave. and Bellis Fair Mall.
Over the last decade there have been many new high rise condominiums built near downtown giving the area hundreds of residents happy to stroll the streets and frequent downtown businesses.
Night life in Downtown Bellingham is surprisingly lively and diverse perhaps due to Bellingham's College Town status--- Bellingham is home to Western Washington University.
If you're looking for things to do in Downtown Bellingham you might want to consider checking out are Museums including the SPARK museum, home to the awesome Megazapper Tesla Coil.
Bellingham's waterfront is also a popular staging area for vising the San Juan Islands. Along the downtown waterfront you will find whale watching tour operators and charter companies.

This brings back some nice memories. I attended Bellingham High School as an exchange student (from Denmark) in 1989-1990. I had a great time, and made great friends.

My wife and I visited Bellingham as part of our twentieth anniversary in the beginning of July 2013. We flew from Milwaukee Wi spending most of our trip in Seattle.
We took the Amtrak Cascades train up the coast of Puget Sound and back. We enjoyed the variety of sights, shops (the rocket ship, Electric Theater), food and riding local buses through the Western Washington University campus. Lots of walking and nice people. Thanks

The opening shot to this video showing snow capped Mt. Baker was taken on the shore of the Lummi Indian reservation on the other side of Bellingham Bay. Living so near a big mountain like Mt. Baker is it surprising how little of it you see on a day to day basis because the lower foothills block the view in most places around the city.

Bear in mind it gets cold and windy through the winter and, like most of western Washington, housing costs are soaring due to Seattle's poorly managed boom. On the upside its a short drive from Vancouver BC for local trips for something different to do if you are not super outdoorsy.

Hi Lukas. Bellingham has a lot of cool recreational opportunities right at your doorstep but after that it is pretty much a sophisticated smaller college town. You can just do what you like to do and find like minded people to do it with. We are talking legal, healthy things of course. :O) There are many live music venues downtown if that is your scene and many nature trails in town and at the edge of town. Bring your umbrella and good hiking shoes.

    • @Bellinghamster
      @Bellinghamster  8 лет назад +7

+scarlett king - I am so sorry to hear you had your car stolen. Deming in the east county is known for its lumberjacks and country people but It sounds like Deming has a few car thieves as well that drive into Bellingham to prey on people. I know that having a car stolen is more than just a financial hit you also feel violated. I do have to wonder where you will go that you feel or actually be safer. Bellingham "IS" one of those magical and very special places people seek out after being fed up with places like Los Angeles, SF, or other high crime cities.
Just about everyone on my street is from CA as are most of my friends and this is pretty much their story. Bellingham has consistently been near the top on most national best-places-to-live lists.
Just so you know, Bellingham's auto theft rate is less than the national average and you are less than half as likely to have your car stolen in Bellingham than the Washington state average.
Your comment got me to delve into the actual crime statistics and I was surprised. Crime in Bellingham is lower than average in just about every category but not by as much as I believed. In the end, it is the awesome beauty, quality of life and recreational opportunities that bring people to bellingham but unfortunately, there are plenty of rotten people in the world and a certain amount of them find their way here as well. Good luck to you--where are you thinking of moving?

    Late, but LA reporting here.
Bellingham is full of drugs, desperation, and is genuinely a pathetic place to live. Teenage wannabe hipsters come in by the droves and the residents are too scared to even give them side eye. Never been asked for drugs this many times in my life! “You got a lighter?” Sure. “You smoke ice, right?” No? Can I have my lighter back? “OH NOW YOU WANT ME TO BE HOMELESS”
On some level it’s been transformed in the way the SF Bay Area was (with no money, infrastructure or culture)
That’s the highest praise possible. College kids would LOVE to be countercultural, but even they can’t manage THAT!
I love Whatcom County. But WWU is such a blight on WA. (DONT get me started on Evergreen.)
Glad I left, miss Mt. Baker ☹️
