      I love my Thrustmaster TX with Ferrari rim and Fanatec club sport 1 pedals via an adapter.
      Fanatec lost me as a customer when they refused to offer an upgrade path for their XBox 360 top end wheel and rim. You had to buy their new base, which would have been a £600 doorstop for 6 months until they actually produced their XBox One compatible rim!

      I have T300 and I managed to set the FF pretty aggresively in Dirt Rally 2.0 and it plays well. My complaint however is how unstable it is when mounted to the table, steering wheel is too small and shifters are too close to the wheel.

      so when are you building your sfx-100? im goin dd1 aswell so thanks for this

      @@kitten11977 Hello mate! :) Yeah all cars will have some in my testing, things have to be able to move after all, they can't be concrete and they are built to a budget! :)
      SFX 100 is too DIY, I just don't have that much time or a 3D printer... maybe in a few years if the channel is doing well then something from PT Actuator that is plug and play might be an option?!
      Oh nice good man! :)

      i have a DD1, to solve the flex in the quick release you have to tighten it in a specific way, and you explained it actually really well which is to nip the gold ring up to the rubber collar and then fit the wheel, but once the wheel is fitted you can actually tighten up the gold collar more than you think, this compresses the rubber just a bit more inside the quick release creating a slightly tighter fit, doing this and then adding the securing bolt (which i noticed in the video you don't use) should eliminate all of the flex in the quick release. i know you said its not an issue and for the most part i agree but it is one of the weaker points of the fanatec DD when compared to other bases and in fact fanatec are working on a QR2 shown in the upcoming BMW m4 wheel teaser video which is much more like the QR offered by simucube... should be absolutely rock solid... as in you couldn't even force it to move.
      also i don't know if you have already done this but your golden hub that you slide the wheel onto can wear pretty fast if you have not coated it in a layer of silicone grease and mine was terrible after 3 months of taking on and off wheels, so bad fanatec actually replaced it on warranty for me free of charge and told my dumb ass to put some silicone grease on it to stop the QR of the wheel rim scratching the paint off. the added benefit of the grease (must use silicone, lithium not recommended by fanatec) is it takes any noise, clicks and creaks out of the quick release, cleaning and re applying the grease every few months is a good thing aswell as it gets gritty over time.
      as for the wheel settings, the most significant settings that change everything are the interpolation and FEI filters, lowering the interpolation will give you more detail but too low and the output becomes too raw and highering the FEI has the same effect but again anything over say 80 on the FEI is a little raw and noisy. the more powerful filter is the interpolation which can improve the smoothness on games using lower fidelity FFB like iracing (higher is better here but not too high 6-7 ideal) on higher fidelity FFB games like ACC setting the interpolation lower so around 2-3 will bring out lots of detail and make the curbs come alive.
      hope that was worth the read if you read it buddy.

      Some have more play with the Fanatec-QR than others I was reading in a forum. In Germany there were already some SFX100 on the 2nd hand market to buy, ready made for about 2k Euro, more or less, from people allegedly giving up the hobby. Usually you have to pick them up, but good for testing before buying. Those systems work with less lag if they have less travel and weight to shift, so not sure if DR2 is that great with it. I guess the DOF-Reality seat made you slower because it's lagging. I tested the system at the Expo and it was by far the slowest seat-mover, but the D-Box and other full motions were quite slow with more travel as well and rather distracting. SimXperience and Motionhouse offers the fastest seat-movers I've tested while the NRL v3 has less punch. Tactile Feedback is just the first way to go especially for Rally with it's textures, but it's also for the tarmac the best bang for the buck.

    Great video as usual. I ordered a DD1 last night and I’m eagerly awaiting it probably tomorrow as an upgrade from my CSW V2 and I’m hoping. That the FFB detail is much better despite really loving My CSW V2. You’ve answered some questions for me thank you.

    Congratulations with your first DIrect drive wheel. I had T300rs Ferrari Alcantara wheel for a while, it’s a great wheel. For years I was looking into Fanatec and sim rigs. Always thought having a dedicated sim rig is bit over the top... Watching many of your sim rig reviews (thank you) and other videos, recently I bought DD1 F1 and P1-x rig. I love simracing and thought sooner or later I will buy DD1 anyway. What’s the point dreaming for years about product you desire, then trying all other products because they are cheaper or ‘value for money’. DD1 and SimLab P1-x combination -what a gamechanger! Looking forward your new videos.

    I started with "Forza 5 is so fun!" to "G923 set + shifter + mods" to "Ok, all that is now my guest rig, time to move straight to direct drive because I'm fully in love".
    Throughout each step, I've sought your reviews on the various market options out there, between chairs and pedals and whatnot, and I cannot understate how much I appreciate your cadence and general one-take philosophy when discussing each item. I feel like I'm listening to a peer with subject matter expertise vs. an expert who cannot speak in layman's terms. This is especially true when you get to the crux of the issue I had: is this worth grabbing over a high end belt driven wheel base given the substantial price cost? Much obliged for addressing it. I was subbed before, but now the bell has been rung.

    Congratulations on your new wheel thanks for the first impression opinion it was informative. Build Quality of that wheel is equal to the price you pay as it should be. One other note in my opinion is the feel of "Quality Gear" you play on is equal to the emersion into the simulation you are soaking your mind into so the better quality a device brings to the emersion of feel is also worth the price paid. Enjoy it. Thank you

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  3 года назад +1

      Yes it sticks out a mile!! I see this with almost all DD wheel bases and I don't like it for two reasons... Firstly it adds unnecessary leverage to the wheel base and deck, secondly it means you have to either have the wheel deck really far away or move your pedals, shifter and seat miles back to accommodate it! Pain in the arse all round mate! lol

I had someone reply to a comment a while ago who works with electric motors and explained why it feels like that and why it is total nonsense.

    Thanks for the first impressions. I was wondering about these basic questions and I think you have answered them all.
    I just got a new TV, an LG OLED 65 inch 4K. I got it yesterday and am still playing with it. I only us my TV's to watch the internet and it works great.
    The point being that that the setup you have shows up really nicely on the new TV. I can see the quality of those components, they really look good.
    I don't see the point of having enough torque to break my thumb or dislocate my elbow but I am definitely looking for better feel, more nuance, more realism, more responsiveness, more feedback.
    It seems as though it ticks all those boxes, so I want one.

      Consider adding some tactile transducers. As little as £45 and you can dial it in for stuff like wheel slip, wheels locking and bumps in the road, etc at different frequencies. It feels like an extension of your wheel's force feedback through your whole seat.

  • @ColinDyckes
    @ColinDyckes 3 года назад +4

    It is indeed 'cogging' as the wheel and thus the motor moves between magnet positions. When powered on and in use it will be 'micro-stepping' between those 'cog' positions so you won't feel it. Belt drive wheels reduce the static cogging by means of the belt reduction ratio relative to the stepper motor.

  • @OhItsThat
    @OhItsThat 3 года назад +1

    Congratulations on the upgrade.
    I’m not a reviewer. I got a DD2 at launch. I had 3 Podium Hubs, all three had high end Momo wheels attached. All three had plenty of flex. The wheels just wobbled and it didn’t take acting like a gorilla to demonstrate.
    It’s because of that the rubber ring on the shaft. It’s horrible feeling when you spend that kind of money and have that kind of power. My McLaren wheel was the same. My BMW wheel and Formula Carbon weren’t as bad but it was still there.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  3 года назад

      Maybe they have tightened the tolerances since launch, I have no wobble in use and almost no flex when trying forcing it.

    • @OhItsThat
      @OhItsThat 3 года назад

      @@KarlGosling Maybe so. Or more likely the rubber ring changes over time. The flex was always there but seemed to get worse over time.
      I just sold my DD2, the wheels became such a struggle to remove by the end there. I was ready to throw it out the window.
      When Fanatec launches their new QR2, buy it immediately. That DD1 of yours deserves a quality high end QR system. Do this for me Karl:)

I see it very well, I thought to change of graphics this year but seeing the prices and the shortage ... I change my T-GT for a direct drive? a greeting

    • @eetuli85
      @eetuli85 3 года назад +1

      This is true imo. Real cars don't try to rip your hands off even if you spin or go off track. DD obviously gives slightly more detailed and responsive FFB but not something that would make you instantly quicker, if at all. I feel that my T300 gives more than enough force and detail to be fast and immersed. Would i like to have a 1500€ DD wheelbase? Of course. Can i justify it to spend the money? No.
      Most people should upgrade their pedals rather than wheels. Good pedals, especially load cell for consistent braking, makes you miles faster compared to having this or that wheelbase.

    Nice video. I don't warrant that sort of kit given my skill level and free time. The latter is a key factor because I can't be doing with the buggering around with my VR kit plus DD software. I wish someone like Logitech (who I don't exactly love) would knock out a mass-produced all in one wheel+drive, belt-driven, ~6-8nm torque with a couple of set up dials on the wheel for TC and the like and pitch at around £250 to £400 but be compatible with G920 peddles and H shift gear selector. Then if it does well support it with better peddles and accessories. I can' find anything decent between entry-level and getting a divorce level. I also wish some design consideration would be given for VR racers where good layout design and tactile cues (different shaped buttons / different textured buttons) are even more important as we're blind.

    Nice first impressions. You said you weren't running the torque anywhere near the 20nm. Can you let me know what you were running? From my searching on the net the T-GT I have and the TS-PC you have can do about 6nm and I don't run that full out in games. I still want a DD wheel though 😁

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  3 года назад +1

      The most I've seen so far is about 12nm, the thing is you don't want it to be high when just driving down a straight (heavy wheel feel) but it's there for when cornering hard and the tyres load up or when you hit something you shouldn't! lol
      Same applies to your T-GT and my TS-PC, that will be hitting peak torque under those situations just not all the time, you want your steering to feel fairly light and realistic most of the time.. or at least I do :)

    Thanks so much for the final thoughts. Maybe upgrading my t150 but even a belt rig is a huge cost. Still on the fence though. 8 nm but not double value. I've heard road cars are about 6.
    Oh by the way, I think it's most beneficial to maximize stiffness on the rotational plane so I'm also looking at how good materials in mounting gear would be to diminish the theoretically infinite deflection on rotation direction change

    I'm really curious if it will make you any faster. Maybe you could do a video comparing a stage time in Dirt Rally. On your logitech, Thrustmaster, and Fanatec wheels. Use the same pedals/ handbrake and sim rig to help minimize the variables. I know I would love to see that video. Maybe you could record the stage and play them back side by side by side and talk over the action. Just a thought.

      It does not make you faster, some of the fastest esports drivers in the world are on Logitech wheels.

      It would be cool to do that video but I'm just not consistent enough to produce it mate, I think I restart a stage at least 50 times before completing a proper fast run! Then all my muscle memory would be gone as I change from setup to setup! :(

    Good review. Most I see using fanatec seem to be very happy with them. As for the nm the wheel puts out it is ott but that means when it's being used its nowhere near its maximum capability wich in turn means it should last a lot longer. I personally drive a none power steering car. I prefer them. What you lose in ease of driving you gain in feedback through the wheel. I dare say if you driving older cars it would add to the authentic feel. I have my wheel setup to be quite heavy as that's what I'm used too. Anyway I'm harping on now 😂 thanks for the review

    What I don't get about the Fanatec DD-wheelbases is why the steering shaft, or whatever you'd call, builds out so far from the base. I get that not everyone has a problem with it, but for me it's a deal breaker. I have my rig to the side when sitting at my desk (imagine an L with the rig at the short end). That wouldn't be possible with the huge depth of the DD-bases.
