The fact that Adrian Belew can sing like that, and play that very complex guitar line is truly mind blowing!! A fan for many, many years. No wonder Frank Zappa hired him!!
So here's the thing about that riff: I watched a video where Fripp explained this - Belew and Fripp are playing almost exactly the same thing (there are like two notes difference in the entire sequence or something), over and over again, with no alterations. The reason why it sounds like they are throwing extra things in there is because their respective riffs are in DIFFERENT TIME SIGNATURES. So they start off the same, then they diverge, and then they merge back together, going in and out of phase with each other. The ebb and flow of this repetition is what makes it so hypnotic. Add the fact that they seem to be using the same guitar tone so you can't tell who is playing what part and the result is a truly ingenius, singular piece of music. I'm sure some other band has done this but I have no idea who they might be.
Wowww ok that makes total sense. You are totally right, it is the same riff just different signatures. That is so fucking cool lol and it sounds amazing!
Discipline, Beat, Three of a Perfect Pair : the flawless 80's KC trilogy. The best KC albums for me. Adrian Belew is an amazing guitarist, singer, musician.
Agree! Adrian added such electricity and positivity! I love looking back at the 1982 videos where everyone’s smiling as they play! Occasionally even Fripp grins. His musical and vocal talents place him in the genius category! He is amazing.

Levin first used the Stick on Peter Gabriel's Scratch album. It's a jamaican influenced tune with a stick on bass. Wonderful Day In Our One-Way World is the song.
Dang - didn’t realize that was Tony playing Stick on that album! just looked it up - I remembered Fripp played Fripperttonics on EXPOSURE, but didn’t know he produced it as well. 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
Neal and Jack and Me is a live DVD album named after the first song on KC's album BEAT, which is also excellent hoping you check some of those songs out knowing full well the Fripp Kraken will likely swipe it down.
Fripp is not only always sitting. He is often in the back even when he's "leading" a band. He once toured with Peter Gabriel and actually played from off stage. Neal Jack and Me is a favorite of mine from this line up.
He once said that sitting does better accomodate his very unique picking style. I think it was Greg Lake who was picking on him back in the day saying he looked like a "huddled mushroom" 😅
Adrian Belew (guitar and vocals) was also with David Bowie's band when they were doing Heroes. (co- written by Fripp). He stayed with King Crimson for a number of years and features on Beat, Three of a perfect pair ans Discipline.
Oh, I highly recommend you listen to Adrien’s first two solo albums, lone rhino and twang bar king. They’re both brilliant. This KC is very much a fusion of the creativity of Adrien + Fripp (and everyone else, obviously). Adrien is wildly creative; the lyrics are all him, and his playing woven in with Fripp makes this incarnation totally unique.
Seeing your reaction to this reminds me of when I first saw this 40 years ago. My buddies and I in high school, we were just getting into 70s prog - Yes/ELP/Genesis/Kansas. Had heard of KC but never listened and honestly for my 17 year old brain maybe KC was a bit too obscure. This vid is from a concert vid they used to play on MTV, of all places, back in the day. So my buddies and I are watching this and were just blown away. Same questions you had, like what is that thing the bass player is playing! Trying to figure out the times and such and also seeing Bruford use the Simmons electric drums in a very different way. I took about another year or so for me to mature enough to finally go down the KC rabbit hole. I love the 3 80's KC record with this lineup. Three of a Perfect Pair is a bit of a letdown but the other 2 are awesome, my favorite being Beat. I read something in the 80s, maybe an interview with Bruford, that this playing in 2 different time sigs is called cross rhythms as opposed to polyrhythms. Whatever its called, I love it. Brufords tune, Beelzebub, is a good example of it where in the beginning section the drums and bass are playing in a different time than the melody riff. I forget the times but its something like 9/8 over 5/8.
Belew was a drummer before taking up guitar. Part of what makes him such a good support player IMO. Seeing KC in '81 with this lineup literally changed my musical trajectory. Probably for the worse financially. :) As impressive as Belew is with all the big stars & gunslingers, seeing him front his own band - The Bears - were some of his best live performances.
The title Neal, Jack and Me, is an homage to the novel 'On The Road' by Jack Kerouac and the 'Beat' generation of writers and poets represented therein, published in the 1950's
Ahhh ok cool. Thank you for the context. I looked it up and saw it was a song of there's from back in the day lol I figured there was something more to it
Tool listened to this band and emulated some of their techniques. this is 40 years ago and Crimson was "Bleeding Edge Prog" Playing the Chapman Stick made Tony Levin very unique and he's played on numerous recordings. Then Fripp & Belew are playing Roland Synth Guitars while Bill Bruford plays Tama/Simmons drums. This show is in Japan and the Japanese simply LOVE King Crimson and they make Tama and Roland instruments. These guys INVENTED this music and made electronic drums, Sticks and Synth guitars beyond COOL.
Tony is playing a 12-string Chapman stick. He helped popularize the instrument. It's kind of a mix between bass and guitar, since half of it has bass strings and the other half has treble strings, and it's commonly played by tapping the strings (like Tony is doing here) instead of fingering or plucking them. As a bass player, he focuses more on the bass strings, but the instrument is super versatile. Check Tony's own band called Stick Men to watch him put the instrument to full use. And yes, they definitely influenced Tool. Funny thing is that, at some point, the bands toured together and Fripp got impressed by them, to the point he now claims there's more influence of Tool in KC's music than he ever heard KC's influence in theirs.
Tony Levin is playing a Chapman Stick, designed as a touch guitar with bass and guitar range strings. Levin was told about the Chapman Stick because he was already using quite a bit of touch playing on his regular bass guitar. It took him a while to start playing the higher end strings but had martyred that by the time he joined this 1980s lineup of Crimson King Crimson The instruments they played at this time were, more or less: Robert Fripp - electric guitar, guitar synthesizer, organ, Frippertronics Adrian Belew - electric guitar, guitar synthesizer, lead vocals Tony Levin - bass guitar, Chapman Stick, backing vocals Bill Bruford - acoustic and electronic drums, percussion Although some variation probably existed for live performances
King Crimson for the 1980's .. they can do no wrong. Fripp in complete control of his exemplary cohorts. Belew- superb , Levin - Chapman stick king , and all hail Bruford. Phenomenal band.
thanks for this. the level of technique in this track might render it sterile in other hands. but we have fripp, belew, levin, bruford. god what a monster lineup. I saw their penultimate live concert at the Greek Theater Berkeley. I'd suggest checking out some of KC's later albums, often ignored. there's some amazing stuff on ConstruKction of Light and Power To Believe. and maybe my ATF, a fripp solo track... Breathless off his solo album Exposure. as a drummer you'll appreciate Narada Michael Walden's contribution. brain-filling. the dissonance of fripp vs levin is bordering on atonal but it's a short track. go on, you'll have fun. :-)
Nice that you noticed and compared the riff to "7empest". Idk if you've been recommended "The Sheltering Sky" by KC yet, but if you ever check it out (The live if Frejus version is the one), there's a part that Tool obviously very much borrowed for a major part of one of the songs off 10,000 Days. I can't remember the Tool song name but I think you'll pick up on it when you hear it. Loving the channel!
0:25 The instrument that bassist Tony Levin is playing is called a Chapman Stick. It comes in different versions, but the one he is playing has 10 strings, you play it by tapping the neck, not by strumming or using a pick.
Five strings high to mid, ( 1 thru 5), then five strings low to mid (6 to 10). The lowest notes of the two sets are the fifth and sixth strings. The octaves overlap, so dense clusters are "easy" (see for example Thelonius Monk, on solo piano in the 50's-60's. ~~~not to mention *his* use of jagged/poly ~rhythms)
I own ChapmanStick number 283, hand built by Mr Chapman in 1977,I think Tony's is in 250 region, great sounding instruments from that period, i made sure i hunted an early one down in 2007. Its a fantastic weird percussive snarly beast...and i love it 😀
The guitarists - Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, are playing in 2 time signatures - 13/8 and 14/8 respectively. That's why this song plays with your head. Then imagine singing while playing one of those guitar parts!! Fripp has always played while sitting on a stool because he was taught that guitar is meant to be played while sitting down, no matter what other rock guitarists might think. Of course I would never accuse Robert Fripp of thinking like anybody else. Then add in the incredible percussion of Bill Bruford and Tony Levin's bass and enjoy the results!
Lee: The first time I heard this, I thought I had entered a black hole. Then when Fripp and Belew separated by one 8th note while picking in 7, only to re-sync up a couple measures later, I thought I was Dr. Manhattan from the movie Watchmen waking up with a hangover. Then I saw them do it live, with Belew singing at the same time he's bending time and my head exploded. Talk about a band breaking new ground!? When I'm an old man with the shakes, I'll be trying to use a grapefruit spoon and slit my wrist with it if this comes on. I dare surgeons in California to operate to this song...
The last four years I have traveled to Bearsville in August for the the finally of Three of a perfect pair camp, hosted by Belew, Levin and Pat Mastelotto! Trey Gunn from Crimson and Marcus Reuter from Stickmen, bassist Julie Slick and Johnnie Luca from Adrian’s Power Trio take the stage! There’s nothing like it! They always play FBF and other classics! It’s not just entertainment, it’s spiritual
Adrian Belew and Tony Levin have called on Danny Carey of Tool to recreate Bruford and Steve Vai to recreate Fripp and tour the 3 80's King Crimson CLASSIC Albums!
It's a wonderful brotherhood! I love learning about these dudes and their lives. They were interesting folk for sure. I'm glad they respect each other as much as they do
People talking about Tool taking the riff are of course conveniently forgetting something - only a year after Frame By Frame, the same riff, but smoothed out to 4-4, was popularised by A Flock Of Seagulls in their infamous "other" hit (If I Had A Photograph Of You).
Ah yes, Robert Fripp and the Sunshine Band! (Well, they are quite funky, in a way.) I love the phasing in this; mind you, I also listen to Steve Reich, so I might be a bit weird...
ChatGPT says "The song primarily alternates between 5/8 and 4/4 time signatures, but it also includes sections in 9/8, 15/16, 14/16, 10/8, 20/16, 12/16, and 11/16"
Adrian Belew from: Zappa, Bowie and Talking Heads Tony Levin: Peter Gabriel and other bands and his band Stick Men Bruford: Yes, KC, UK, Genesis his own band check out Master Strokes and Earthworks Fripp: KC, Bowie, Eno, Blondie and solo work with Peter Gabriel and Daryl Hall
It took me a sec but I recognized it lol I had just listen to that album a week or two ago so it was fresh in my head 😅 It's a great riff tho. And it works in 7empest so well.
Belew sings that long and sustained vocal melody that just floats on top of the groove, while he's playing that technical single note stacotto rhythm that seems like maybe a 3 count waltz, idk? And he makes it look easy.. That's not easy.
In 2001, KC (which by then was heavier and sounded even more like Tool) thought about having Tool as their opening act. Then they checked sales figures and instead asked if Tool would like for KC to be _their_ opening act! Which they did for a tour, during which a lot of the material for the album "The Power to Believe" was developed.
Lol - Danny Carey use to warm up to the album this song is from before Tool shows in about 96/97 (I think). Another comparison off the album is KC's Instrumental piece "The Sheltering Sky" and Tool's "Reflection"
There is one live recording where Belew starts the song too fast so poor old Fripp had to play that double time cross picking section faster than is humanly possible. I love this line up.
I had to go and check for myself. Yes, the opening guitar part for 7empest is very similar. Good spot. The rest of the song totally different though. I don’t think Fripp will be going after Tool for any copyright infringement. 😋
Adrian Belew will always be my favorite KC frontman. They stole him from Talking Heads who stole him from David Bowie who stole him from Frank Zappa. His style of guitar complimented Fripps well then add his ability to play animal or other sounds. Seing them live in 2003 was an eye opener in that there were many complex parts I had always assumed were Fripp or Tony on the Chapman Stick that were actually Adrian. Tony played standard bass or the Stick which is a custom finger tap played instrument. He was the biggest name to popularize it. Later KC bassist Trey Gunn primarily played a similar but larger later descendant called a Warr Guitar. They have a very distinct sound to them.
Mean Mr. Fripp is gonna betcha My understanding is that Fripp has been in court with his record company for decades and he doesn't want the monetization of these videos going to them, so he flags everything.
I was led to believe Fripp had eventually regained all his mechanical copyrights - which is why the entire Crimson catalog is now in the hands of Discipline Global Mobile - in which case the anti-reaction-channel crusade is just him being a vile noxious abusive amoral spazyshitglob, as always.
In before the block. The Chapman Stick came out in the 70's but never caught on beyond freaks like Tony Levin. 😉 You can also often see him playing it when he tours with Peter Gabriel. It evolved into the Warr guitar, which a future member of KC -- Trey Gunn -- played. The drum mix is pretty weak on this video IMO. Bill's playing sounds much fuller and better integrated into the rest of the music on the studio version.
Earlier this century there were a couple of street musicians I used to see in London and the nearby suburbs playing Chapman Sticks - obviously it has a cult following.
I get the sense that Fripp can be a bit of a dick, but there's no denying the man's talent and influence. I love this lineup so much. Belew was a fantastic frontman, with a great voice and fantastic lead guitar skills. Bruford and Levin are a HOF rhythm section. And Fripp is Fripp. Talent oozing all over the place here! BTW, love the Olias CD behind you! 👍🤟
Love- NOT - how you extol the atmosphere as you destroy it with your continual interjections. Maybe turn off your mic during playback so we're not subjected to a constant stream of irrelevancies and digressions. Save 'em for your wrap-up. Just a suggestion. Enjoying the selections whether picked by you or subscribers, less enamoured of the ever interrupted flow. 😒🤐🙄😉🤙🏼🎶❤️✨️🎄🎅🏼🙏🏽

FACTS!
Then Bowie poached him & THEN he played with Talking Heads!!

Different times, signatures, and Adrian sing in a different time signature! It’s amazing
Wowww ok that makes total sense. You are totally right, it is the same riff just different signatures. That is so fucking cool lol and it sounds amazing!
They both play in 7, then fripp drops the last note of the riff and It becomes a 13/8 figure after a while the guitars synchonize and becomes 7 again
Discipline is a great album. Lots of gems. Underrated in my opinion xx
Yeah it’s called phasing. Very common in math rock and minimal classical! Philip Glass, Steve Reich etc
Discipline, Beat, Three of a Perfect Pair : the flawless 80's KC trilogy. The best KC albums for me. Adrian Belew is an amazing guitarist, singer, musician.

I saw that tour, 1984. I was a junior in high school. There’s a fantastic live album from that tour called “Absent Lovers.” Highly recommended!
I bet that was an electric show. I really wish I could have seen it lol I'll check it out!
Truly great live album.
I saw them during this tour too, when they rolled through Toronto. One of the best shows I ever attended.
Yep - me too. Back in the "one drummer" days. Of course, it's Bill Bruford so he counts as 2 or 3.
@@Kevin6059 You're right! It takes 3 drummers to replace Bill Bruford!
If you`re liking Belew`s vocals, you need to check out him singing on Zappa`s 'live' on the song 'City of Tiny Lights'. Good stuff. You`ll dig it.
I'll check it out! Thank you for the suggestion :)
He made Talking Heads Remain In Light, one of my favorite albums of all time.
Good suggestion. He toured with Bowie too.
Any KC album with Bruford is something to own.

ChatGPT says "The song primarily alternates between 5/8 and 4/4 time signatures, but it also includes sections in 9/8, 15/16, 14/16, 10/8, 20/16, 12/16, and 11/16"
Adrian Belew from: Zappa, Bowie and Talking Heads
Tony Levin: Peter Gabriel and other bands and his band Stick Men
Bruford: Yes, KC, UK, Genesis his own band check out Master Strokes and Earthworks
Fripp: KC, Bowie, Eno, Blondie and solo work with Peter Gabriel and Daryl Hall
I saw Adrian with the Bears. Great pop songs from left-field.
I went back and listened to Tempest. You called it haha.
It took me a sec but I recognized it lol I had just listen to that album a week or two ago so it was fresh in my head 😅
It's a great riff tho. And it works in 7empest so well.
There’s an interview with Adam Jones guitarist of Tool where he says King Crimson was an influence of his so there ya go.
Love the 80s KC thrak is also a killer album.
I may be wrong but I was told way back that Fripp has a problem with his leg. Toyah does too.
Fripp said he was playing 9 notes per second on this performance. Tony Levin was playing a Chapman Stick.
Belew sings that long and sustained vocal melody that just floats on top of the groove, while he's playing that technical single note stacotto rhythm that seems like maybe a 3 count waltz, idk?
And he makes it look easy..
That's not easy.
It's a Chapman Stick. A touch guitar. Preferred by bassists.
The bass is called a Chapman Stick
I figured it out after the video lol Tony was playing the shit out of that thing! Lol
Tool did steal from KC but Fripp didn’t mind as he is friends with Tool. Usually he’s lethal.
The king !
Andrian Belew is da man!
He really fuckin is dude. I love his vocals and his effort. He meshes great with Fripp.
Lol - Danny Carey use to warm up to the album this song is from before Tool shows in about 96/97 (I think).
Another comparison off the album is KC's Instrumental piece "The Sheltering Sky" and Tool's "Reflection"
since you're a drummer, you must check out "Discipline", again by King Crimson
Fripp took it down. Here's the link www.patreon.com/posts/89973324?
King Crimson definitely wrote the instruction manual and Tool studied it
If Tool has a song with this riff, they took it from KC. This concert is from around '84, before Tool existed.
Lol I know. The song I'm referring to was released in 2018. Lol
Tony is playing a Chapman Stick.
If you are impressed by Adrian Belew's musicianship, just check out his resume, including Talking Heads, David Bowie, Frank Zappa, etc etc etc etc.
Tool claims them as an influence. Many think coming from Maynard it is tongue and cheek but I hear a lot of KC influence in Tool riffs.
Hell Yeah. I’m here for KayCee and the Sunshine ☀️ Band.
Uhh-huh - That’s the way I like it L33!
🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
Hahaha 😆 I am thinking outside of the box now 😅
It’s called a Chapman stick. Used instead of a bass or rythm guitar
There is one live recording where Belew starts the song too fast so poor old Fripp had to play that double time cross picking section faster than is humanly possible. I love this line up.
Haha poor Fripp. I bet he still figured it out lol. What a great dude. I really like this line up too. Bruford Belew Levin Fripp :)
If you can get away with reacting to "Ling Rimson" without getting blocked I'd recommend trying "Sailor's Tale" from "Islands".
I had to go and check for myself. Yes, the opening guitar part for 7empest is very similar. Good spot. The rest of the song totally different though. I don’t think Fripp will be going after Tool for any copyright infringement. 😋
Yeah I knew I recognized that riff... haha. It's a great riff though so I understand why they used it lol
stick bass
Definitely same riff Tool took !!
I was about to ask how the hell are you getting away with this 😅 but you should check out model man by"KC"😁
Hahaha it never lasts long... and I don't even put ads on them anymore lol oh well
@@L33Reacts I wish he'd let people react to the music these kids need real stuff to listen to
I will die on this hill. Music should be work, like any other job.
I like this one because it’s more than a copy of early KC. Which in the long run demotes it.
It's called a Chapman Stick.
They play in 2 different time signatures and meet then go their separate ways again.
And listen to Elephant Talk then Primus’ Jerry Was a Racecar Driver for another KC homage/borrowing
So Crimson sounds like Tool years before Tool played? You always need to see who was first and who sounds like who.
I literally said like 5 times that tool stole the riff from KC. You should finish watching the video before commenting 😆
Mean Mr. Fripp is gonna betcha
My understanding is that Fripp has been in court with his record company for decades and he doesn't want the monetization of these videos going to them, so he flags everything.
Well I don't turn monetization on for KC videos:) so hopefully he notices that lol
I figured the studio was a better mix but it sounds decent still. Bill is that good, he trumps bad production 😁
Earlier this century there were a couple of street musicians I used to see in London and the nearby suburbs playing Chapman Sticks - obviously it has a cult following.
something about the mix in the strong parts quit some of the intensity. Listen the studio and others live version by your own :)
It blows my mind that you're a drummer and did not even mention Bill Bruford. He is one of the best drummers to ever exist.
Bro, I've got like 10 videos dedicated to bills side projects alone. Not including his time with Yes or other KC videos. He is my favorite drummer lol
@@L33Reacts Awesome!
Maynard totally rips off Greg lake from the song bitches crystal by ELP
I get the sense that Fripp can be a bit of a dick, but there's no denying the man's talent and influence.
I love this lineup so much. Belew was a fantastic frontman, with a great voice and fantastic lead guitar skills. Bruford and Levin are a HOF rhythm section. And Fripp is Fripp. Talent oozing all over the place here!
BTW, love the Olias CD behind you! 👍🤟
Bro, stop doing live versions. Please.
Go listen to the song if you want to hear the song.
King Crimson has been together since the summer of 1968….I doubt if they sound like Tool…since they invented the sound.
Tool are heavily influenced by KC
I can definitely hear it! I love the Influences throught the decades lol the talent is unmistakable in these bands.
