He struggles sometimes with other languages but does speak Russian and is doing well with Mandarin and English. Google Wikipedia for information about his upbringing and training.

Thank you for your reaction, and welcome to the world of Dimash. Dimash has been approached by several producers around the world, but is unwilling to sign contracts with them. He wants to sing what he sings etc. and not be channeled into a category or genre, which most want him to do. He is very well know in Asia, Eurasia, and Russia, and has won top music awards in China and Russia. He is starting to be more known in Europe and the USA, but is doing it entirely with his "own team," and in his own time frame. He was on tour in Europe and Eurasia when the pandemic started, and has cancelled most of those concerts at this point. He did have his first solo concert in the USA at Barclay's Center in NY, in December 2019. The concert was sold out, and attended by people from 63 different countries. I was at that concert, and it is something else to hear him sing live. Videos don't even come close to what you hear, and feel listening and seeing him live. Continue your journey with Dimash. He sings every genre of music, and will continue to surprise and shock you.

I am a huge admirer of Dimash, I'm just tired of the same old repetitive comments being posted. It's like 15-20 Dimash fans actively search out every Dimash video posted and make the same comments on each.

Well, as you found out, Dimash is from Kazakhstan, and in that fateful night on January 21, 2017, he performed this 1978 French Canadian song on Chinese TV and gained 2.4 million followers overnight on Weibo. Literally. SOS d’un Terrien en Détresse was written by Michel Berger for the rock opera Starmania (which spawned other popular songs such as Le Monde Est Stone) specifically with Daniel Balavoine in mind. Later it experienced a revival with Gregory Lemarchal. Both singers died young, which somehow contributed to the mystique of the song. Yet no one yet has interpreted it in the way Dimash did. This performance was reported on French TV, following which France 2 invited Dimash to sing it on Les Années Bonheur. He was still having a flu then so that performance is not as good as this one technically, though the lyrics were pronounced better. Regarding the mispronunciations: Dimash sang SOS many times before and after this performance. Yet he never ever made that mistake. My conclusion is that he was extremely having “le trac” that day. He even messed up the lyrics a few times. (j’suis mal dans ma peau instead of Plus beau vu d’en haut) This was his first time in China, a total unknown competing with famous award-winning Chinese singers with lots of fans. He was the opening act on the first episode. The audience of 500 (who each have three votes) cheered him to boost his self-confidence when he walked out.
Now, three years since his explosion on the international scene, he has won dozens of music awards, conquered China and Russia, held solo concerts in Asia, Europe and New York (December 10, 2019).

A 22 yr old Khazak kid singing a french song on a Chinese television competition. Singer2017. Yes he is classically trained since 5 yrs old. He has higher degrees in classic and popular music. Ive been a Dear for 3 yrs. And yes he is the real deal.

Hello from an Australian dear. I have been following Dimash's career since 2017 and last December he had a sold out concert in New York. He plays 7 instruments and has learned the fine art of singing since he was 5 years old. To me Dimash is the best singer in the world. A man from Kazakhstan singing a French song on a Chinese reality show - yes you are right , his French pronunciation was a little off on this performance. He corrected these errors in his later performances. Once in a blue moon, someone of Dimash's magnitude comes along and blows us all away and all we can do is just sit back and enjoy !! I've given up looking for superlatives to describe Dimash - tried for 3 years and still can't articulate it ! SOS song was original written for Daniel Balavoine also known as “French Chayanne”, French singer and songwriter. He was hugely popular in the French speaking world and inspired many singers in 1980s. He was also a part of the original cast of the rock opera Starmania in 1978, which was written by Michael Berger, his closed friend. That’s was when Sos song was born. Then in 2004 great French singer Gregory Lemarchal performed SOS beautifully. What is incredible, he has cystic fibrosis and performed this song excellent! He was hospitalized many times, because CF. Doctors warned Gregory that singing will deteriorate his sick lungs, but singing was his life. He past away of CF at the age 23, on April 23 2007. Then in 2017 great Dimash, in memory of Gregory Lemarchal performed SOS on The Singer contest in China. Check his Adagio, Sinful Passion, Mademoiselle Hyde, Love of Tired Swans, Olympico, Opera2(which is Diva song from Fifth Element), Daididau,etc etc.Happy watching😊

By the way, I discovered Dimash (with this song) in 2019, and my first thought was how I didn't hear about him before and where the hell have I been in the past 2 years?!
Dimash did not speak French at all when this was taped (not sure if he started studying it in the meantime). Years before He listened to Grégory Lemarchal (I guess was his name) singing the tune and decided to sing it as well. So he learned the words phonetically. Sound by sound. So a few slips (like the s in ris or vis) were honest mistake as you say (strange fact tho: he sang the song before and those words were pronounced correctly, no s's, so I presume he was just nervous being his first appearance on that big Chinese TV show called "Singer")
He did sing this same song when he's still doing contest 2015 slavic bazaar. Maybe some of his team in china corrected or change on how to pronounced it. Who knows.

Don't forget he was the first arstist (plus the first foreign Singer ever invited to participate in the competition) to sing during the first episode in his (Dimash's I mean) first appearance on the Chinese TV. Dimash learned French for this song. Dimash is a 25 year old singer from Kazakhstan. This event is called I AM SINGER 2020. It is a competition in China. Dimash was kind of a dark horse they brought in. No one really knew him except in his country where he won many awards. He began his singing training a 3,. He has had a formal classical education to say the least. He has a 6 octave range. He also plays several instruments such as the piano, which he began at 2 years of age, the drums, guitar, and several more. He has writen a few of his songs. His mother and father were singers in Kazakhstan and his father is also a music producer. He got his high range from his mother. What Dimash can do with his voice is nothing short of miraculous. And as well, he is kind, intelligent and deeply loyal to his country. He calls his fans his "Dears' They range from children to people ln their 70s and older! Everyone loves Dimash.

Almost every new song he drops immediately becomes my favorite. I just listened and watch Vita's new version of Diva Dance, by the way. Now I understand why Vitas has forbidden Dimash from singing it again. This is the other reason why Dimash is so loved. He has a heart and a soul that is as beautiful as is his voice. What a wonderful reaction! Dimash is the child of a mother who is an opera singer and a father who composes and produces for opera. After being born with perfect pitch and a passion for singing (even as an infant) he started music academy at age 5, and since that time he has practiced 2-5 hours EVERY day, honing those natural abilities into a voice that some people doubt could be "real." It's very real, and even when he sings around home with NO mic, he sounds miraculous. You will be finding all you want to know about him on Wiki, and by listening to more of his videos. Yes, he is classically trained - he is a multi instrumentalist, and he sings in 12 different languages, and has already won a multitude of awards. His native tongues are Kazakh and Russian, and he is learning English and Mandarin Chinese. Above all though, he is an amazing, very humble human being whose self-proclaimed mission in this world is to spread love, peace and unity, and he is very charitable. Dimahs Dears will fill you on the singer himself but here is some background on the song. This song is from the Québec-French rock opera "Starmania" which was first produced in 1979. Most of the songs from this rock opera became classics in the musical French Repertoire. You may know some of these songs: "Ziggy," "Monopolis", "Ce soir on danse à Naziland", "La complainte de la serveuse automate", "Le monde est stone", "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" etc... Many world famous singers covered those songs. Céline Dion's interpretation of "Ziggy, un garcon pas comme les autres" and "Le BLues du Businessman" are considered two favorites with her French fans. @Mas Medi In that performance (I know it improved later but still has room for improvement) his pronunciation is so bad that I wish I did not speak (amongst others) French because it makes it hard to simply enjoy his very beautiful voice without noticing the mispronunciations... Jordan was absolutely right to mention Dimash pronunciation was not exactly right but he did not overdo it, there are more than just a muted "s" pronounced here and there, some lyrics are either partially or totally not understandable.. Considering he learned this song phonetically and does not apparently speak French this is quite an impressive feat and, as I said previously, he has an absolutely incredible voice...

Yes please do more Dimash! This was a Chinese music contest show called "Singer". He was 22 then and beyond fantastic! He's gotten even better now if you can believe it. I would suggest you do more Dimash from the "Singer" episodes. There are like 13 or 14 in all. Or do a song Called Sinful Passion from the Sochi performance. Kind of cool to stick with the older stuff first to get an idea of his journey. Or, you can really do what ever you feel like too. I've subscribed hoping you do more!

Hello Jordan, I'm surprised that (as a Frenchman) you've never heard of SOS d'un Terrien en Détresse. It was composed by Michel Berger (music) and Luc Plamondon (lyrics) for Daniel Balavoine, who recorded it in 1978 for the rock opera Starmania. It was a huge hit worldwide. Grégory Lemarchal, among many others, recorded a beautiful cover of the song. None of the versions comes anywhere near Dimash's on any parameter, in my opinion (French pronunciation excepted... 😉)

The show The Singer was in China and Dimash is from Kazakhstan. This show was basically the start for him to become more internationally known. A huge fan base immediately formed in China. He now has fans from many parts of the world.
He was 22 then, this month he will be 26.
He started studying music at 5. He certainly has exceptional talent, but he's also a very hard worker in that direction.
There is a lot to discover about him and quite a lot of music.
He also had a couple of bigger concerts, but unfortunately his tour was interrupted by the virus.
So many first time reactors say this "How have I never heard of him before?" I guess well because we (Western World) restrict ourselves to what is available in mainstream media, and the view there is so narrow and English language dominated. But you know about him now, welcome.

I heard Dimash for the first time in January of 2020.
I’m almost embarrassed to admit since then I have listened to SOS and several other of his songs probably over 200 times. I am totally addicted to the sound of his voice. I’m 75 years old and I have never had anyone’s voice make me feel so emotional. I get chills every single time.!

Opera 2 was his next performance so that’s probably a good one to do next. He’s from Kazakhstan and has been classically trained since the age of 5. I don’t know why he did it here. He said he was very nervous (although it didn’t show) or someone mistakenly told him he was pronouncing it incorrectly. This song is actually a very well known French song. It is from a French Canadian rock opera theatre piece called “Starmania”. Supposedly it is one of the 5 most difficult French songs to sing. This song was on a Chinese talent competition show called The Singer. He was on a world tour when the pandemic hit and everything was postponed as he was sent to quarantine at home in Kazakhstan. You can watch all his performances on The Singer and he has his own youtube channel with live performances from his concerts. He is the best singer in the world. He's a gift from God. I’ve seen him sing this song 50 different times, and this is the only time that I’ve ever seen him pronounced the S in Ris. The only time and maybe he was reading it off of the prompter.
The song is originally from a French Singer, Daniel Balavione, who unfortunately passed away, in the 80s. But the song is from 1978, Starmania.

D'abord écrite pour Daniel Balavoine, reprise par Grégory Lemarchal, Bruno Pelletier et finalement, Dimash, chanteur/vocaliste du Kazakhstan. Il avait été invité en Chine afin de participer à l'émission/concours The Singer (pour musiciens/chanteurs professionnels accomplis) comme candidat «wild card». Il y a remporté la 2e place, la Chine étant ce qu'elle est, car vocalement et musicalement, selon l'avis de plusieurs, il aurait dû avoir la première. Mais sa popularité et nororiété en Chine en ont fait une star internationale. Il est effectivement formé en chant classique et moderne, niveau universitaire et ce, depuis l'âge de 5 ans. Il complète un doctorat en arts de la scène/chant et musique, c'est également un musicien accompli, principalement le piano (pour la composition et les arrangements) mais sur 8 autres instruments également dont la dombra, la batterie, le marimba et la guitare. Bref, un prodige du monde musical qui y baigne depuis sa naissance. Et comme si sa voix et le reste n'étaient pas suffisants, il possède aussi l'«oreille absolue». Others have corrected him on this. It is the one flaw in the performance. He does learn because every performance after this he corrects the silent “s”. He’s 23 yrs here. His two masters in classical and contemporary music may have missed this in his language studies. Only the French would correct him on it. Good call. He sings in 12 languages. I think his French is better than his English, but he’s still studying that and yet he sings in English too. He really gets it when he makes a mistake especially like this when it changes the whole meaning of a word. Don’t worry about the dears if they get mad. Because he has to learn as an international singer.
No, he never pronounced the “s” before (or after) the Singer performance. There are lots of videos showing him singing this song before 2017 and he never mispronounced it before. Maybe it was nerves or someone told him (incorrectly) that he was mispronouncing it.

I understand your surprise. I just learned about Dimash a few days ago, and now I feel like I've been living in a cave. I've watched dozens of reaction videos now because I'm hooked. While I'm not a vocalist, one thing I notice about the way he sings is how he embodies the song, especially with his right hand. Watch the way he anticipates with his hand where the song is going next. It's almost like he rehearses it physically just before he sings it. Also (since you speak French) notice how his soprano voice accompanies certain passages in the libretto where the sentiment soars. It is not empty pyrotechnics. There is a semantic purpose to everything he does - sound and sense working together.
