This was his entry to our Lockdown Video contest! ASC2020 Lockdown 5 was a 5 trick-1 minute video challenge for Asian Skaters.
We are about to set off on the next project, Asia Skateboarding Awards, but this is the story of the lockdown contest from a few weeks from earlier this year!
In May 2020, with the world being turned upside down due to this terrible virus, we challenged fellow skateboarders in Asia!
We often spend most of our days skating through the city with friends, skating and hanging out at skateparks or having a casual flat ground session in our neighbourhood. The we found ourselves stuck inside unable to sustain our usual routines of social engagement and physical activities. This can be frustrating to say the least.
So. What to do?? Watch more skate videos? Or try and figure out a way to satisfy our inner urges to skate even if it is in total isolation.
With the support of Krux Trucks, MOB Griptape and Ricta Wheels, we came up with an idea to invite all the skaters from all of the countries of Asia to come together in solidarity. To share tricks and creativity and to include all levels of skateboarding from all of our skateboarding communities. Many of the entries share an intimate look into their daily lives.
For some, their only place to skate is in the garden or right in their living room.
We decided to keep the rules very loose to include everyone from as many countries as possible. Many countries are at different levels of lockdown and many have access to different places to skate. Some people are still able to skate on the street and some have skateparks at home!
While others have to only skate in their basements, driveways, garage and roofs!
This was a platform for sharing our tricks and cultural exchanges, and to bring our neighbours closer together. We are focused more on inclusivity and creativity rather than the danger and difficulty of tricks.
In many cases this was the first time some countries will be competing internationally. Many skaters in Asia don't have regular access to boards or skateparks even in the best of times. And we thought it important to include everyone! We ended up with entries from 38 countries!
It was the first time someone from Tajikistan was be able to compete on the same platform with someone from India. Iran, and Kuwait', Mongolia and Afghanistan and Palestinian, Oman , Japan and South Korea.
For many countries it was the first time they had access and opportunity to compete for prizes and showcase their talents internationally!
We saw from the entries that skaters had found an excuse to pick their phones and boards, and connect with friends and be creative. This has helped them get out of their solace/solitude/loneliness. Creativity has helped us break up our days, and focus on skills in a different way. These skills and connections will be useful for us all as we move towards more freedom of movement and video edits in the future!
