    Hi Matt! I've been using a cane for mobility for 25 years and never realized I had a weapon other than keeping people from knocking into my bad leg. This is so exciting and helps with feeling more secure when I'm out. I've been binging these videos and trying some basics since my Cane Masters cane arrived. My kids laughed at first but now my son wants to get back into martial arts . Thank you so much for the techniques that address mobility issues and conditioning. Everything is great but those are particularly helpful. You're doing great work. Plus I learned about Cane Masters thru your link. Thanks!!

    Matt, I am a retired University professor and my wife is a retired travel agency director. Yes, I have visited the Shaolin temple a few times with family and also with students. The show is not what most western people would expect. Roughly 75 percent gymnastics and perhaps 15 percent demonstration of inner force, like bending a spear with the point placed on the neck. They now have a modern theater and use very low lighting and colored lights and even have a scantily clad young lady in a sparkly dress to announce what is going on... I believe the martial arts style is called Wushu. The head monk is very scandalously wealthy and has a new business selling Kungfu cookies...

      Yes! That is the same thing I have heard from others for years. I skipped a visit to Shaolin when I visited China for that reason. Too bad but not surprising in the least. Thank you for sharing!

    Thanks so much Matt for so quickly addressing my request last week for this type of video. I can't wait to try the spinning again. You may have nailed my problem when you pointed out that if we spin backwards the point of the crook will catch our wrist.
    I've done the wrist-based figure 8 spin you demo toward the end of the video and can make it work, but find with the oak Cane Masters cane that my wrist is not yet strong enough to do more than a few reps before some pain sets in. I'm assuming that if I keep at it enough to build strength but don't overdo it and injure the wrist muscles, that in time I'll get better at it.

    Thanks for the video.
    I sometimes hold my cane just below the crook and extend it outwards from my body. I then turn the end in small circles one way until my wrist is tired and then switch hands. When I come back to the first hand, I make small circles the other way. I'm not entirely sure why I do this. I have a good friend who used to teach fencing. Maybe he talked about it as an exercise for fencing using a foil. I have a cane and not a foil, but I would think that the exercise would still have some value. My wrists seem to tire quickly when I do this. In many ways, the motion is similar to what you teach with escrima sticks and swinging clubs except that you make larger circles with those. I make larger circles with those as well. I think the small circles with the cane exercise my wrist differently. I don't get as much flexibility increase, but maintaining a tight circle seems to require more muscular control. Do you see any value to this?

    I left a comment on Mr. Melton's site, that one could see his grip shift as the cane rotated, and I asked that he show it in close-up. Glad to see you do that. I am curious though: with your gripping fingers held almost out away from the handle, it looks like only the inside of your thumb and index fingers would build any callouses. I use home-made canes with a T-handle, and I try to get the callouses to build a bit more evenly across my fingers. Great vids.

      Yes. It is more for strength, flexibility, spatial awareness, and endurance. Not practical for fighting but great for enhancing skill and ability to defend yourself.

    What do Matt think of the self defense walking stick from umarex? "elite force". its more modern looking than the wood canes. Im in my 40s but since i have an inflammation in my legs (akilles) which are hard to get rid of, i just bought one of these here in europe since a walking stick is actually good to have to take some pressure off my leg, and these walking sticks were sold as "tactical" but for a fairly low price. Flashlights is the second legal option here. The third legal option is self defense spray with menthol (pepperspray is illegal) and thats pretty much what you can legally carry without getting in trouble with cops.
