    The Cane is a medical device and with proper Cane Self Defense training can save your life.
    However, it is important to choose a tactical principle/concept based Cane Self Defense system as opposed to a "senior based" technique system with disregards to the faster, stronger, younger opponent. I've taught cane self-defense at a number of senior centers. Seniors come in wheelchairs and walkers, the age group is from 55 to 90. They may never be proficient with the cane, but they enjoy the classes. Range of motion stretching, cane techniques and self-defense, breathing techniques, meditation and indigenous drumming. Ancient proverbs that gets them thinking. I try to look at the macro the big picture.

      Beautiful Joe Bruno! Happy to learn you emphasize the health and wellness component of the Cane most are unfamiliar with. Health (physical/mental pain) and mobility challenges are far more common than physical assaults so tremendous value you're offering. Thank you for commenting and all you're doing out there. Trained in Kuntao, Silat, Hakauakia karate, Kenpo, Danzan jujitsu, My Uncle Brendan Lai who was Black Belt Hall of Famer several times over. He trained me in 7 Star Praying Mantis, Choy Li Fut, and even in Ninpo Taijitsu/Ninjutsu under a certied instructor from the Bujinkan. I am from the SFO Bay Area; so I was priviliged to learned these combative strategies. HOWEVER! In the end, I got old. I am in my 50's and find the agility and endurance GONE! I looked at Jutte or Cane Fighting and soon realized I need to learn to parry the cane. Having fenced before I learned that the strike of a parry blocks the offender as you strike. Is your course comprehensive? I have looked at the Warrior Combat Cane and his stuff will mostly NOT work! He is basically marketing his canes. As a US Veteran trained in H2H I kind of have the experience to know what will work in a combat situation. I will worry about the Law IF I make it out alive. However, I will work as close within the Law as I can. Peace Favor Your Sword.

    Great video!!
    I'm 81 and the older I get, more pieces keep malfunctioning. I am currently walking with a 5' walking stick, with an 8" braided leather loop fastened 3" from the top. If I grab the stick with my hands after a while, they cramp. So I put my hand through the loop so it's just at my wrist, then hold the stick with my hand, taking the load on my wrist and arms. This takes a tremendous stress off of my lower back, feet and legs.
    I have been working on some defense techniques using my stick. Having a strong loop can be utilized somewhat, but I am afraid I will only have one, maybe 2 moves before I am done. Situational awareness is key. If I have to try to figure out what I'm going to do when the situation arises, I'm screwed. I need to have thought about this before hand.
    I haven't seen any usable long staff training yet. Especially for seniors. Maybe I can adapt some of the cane training.

    Its like taking a self defense class...6wks is nothing. If you're going to be trained its a thing you do for the rest of your life. If you're not trained with a weapon DO NOT carry it...at least not for the purposes of self defense. Praise be The Almighty Stick, but know how to use it.

    As I approach 65 and have old leg injuries come back to bite me I have opted to keep a cane handy. Because my sport/hobby over the past 5 years is HEMA, I'm currently getting into armored fighting with steel weapons, I think a cane would be a good weapon for someone who looks kind of weathered but is still pretty fit. I look normal with it and so far at least know how to use it like a sword with proper cuts and thrusts. I look forward to learning to us it properly as a cane.

    Good luck being a senior and fighting off a determined attacker. Good chance you will piss him off. I watched a man with a cane masters cane try to fight off people at a rally. They took his cane then beat his arse🤷

    • @AmericanCaneSelfDefense
      @AmericanCaneSelfDefense  Год назад +1

      @gretashapiro we agree! Canes don't save lives, training does. Unfortunatley, most who purchase canes aren't properly trained to use them for personal protection. Training dictates what you'll be able to do under the duress of an assault by a bigger. younger, stronger opponent. Thank you for following and commenting!

    A lot of old people thinking that if they carry a cane, they are safer. It doesn't work this way, one has to PRACTICE. Nothing is worst if the opponent takes over the cane and use it back on them. Don't carry unless you practice regularly, put an interest in it. Not only that helps, it's good exercise for old people. You'd be surprised how easy for the cane to fly away if one's not careful, takes constant practice. I hit the heavy kicking bag to practice. Don't get fancy unless you have a partner to work with, My opinion is stick with the basic, hit hard.

    As a retired LEA in need of using a cane, I found my baton training very useful. Adding cane strike technics with martial arts kicking techniques, I find my own self-defense combinations very effective.. 9.99% of attacks are grappling, so I concentrate a lot on that initial grappling rush attack. I never tie up my cane with grappling which can loose my cane. Strike, block, kick in various combinations.

    The video was interesting, but the title is not really great. RUclips doesn't like misleading titles, and viewers don't like them either. It is very frustrating when the title tricks the viewers. I just found out recently about this subject, so I don't know who is really telling the truth about cane self-defense, so I look at videos, and this title was frustrating to me.
    I am curious though about the effect of swinging a cane on shoulders, especially if it could cause rotator cuff injuries.

    • @AmericanCaneSelfDefense
      @AmericanCaneSelfDefense  2 года назад +2

      Thank you for commenting and your inquiry Kenneth! This video in particular is tops in views and if you watched the ENTIRE video, understand the message and ACSD mindset, you'll understand that while the title creates curiosity given ACSD is statistically the world leader in getting Caners properly trained, there is nothing misleading about the title. ACSD does not teach or market the concept of "self defense for seniors" as many are doing today. ACSD teaches American Cane Self Defense with tactical principles that apply to EVERYONE. While the principles allow circumventing for injuries/physical limitations and everyone is encouraged to "come as you are", tactical principles are never ignored in place of "techniques for seniors" to "fit" anyones' limitation(s) for the real reason that criminals don't care. That's the message of this particular video. - As to who is telling the truth...we encourage you to do your research. There are only 3 original American Cane pioneering branches and ACSD is the tactical self defense branch with 3 decades of training Caners worldwide. Everyone outside those 3 branches is a "derivative of", doing their own thing, or jumping on the Cane bandwagon. - ACSD is movement based brain training developed by a Doctor of Naturopathy and professional bodyworker specializing in pain therapy. One of the tenets is proper training should improve range of motion in joints and never aggravate or cause over-use injuries. If you have further questions, feel free to schedule a No Cost Cane Clarity Call by texting CCC to 305-745-7839 or call 800-289-8188- Stay Safe Kenneth!

    I'd rather face a yob who wants to fight me/ mug me, with me with a cane, than face them without, you've got a ranging jabbing thrusting ability, a clubbing advantage, a hooking option with the hooked cane.
    If you've a medical reason to need the cane, you're carrying it anyway, why not use it!!? 🤔

    you need to be physically proficient to deal with physical confrontation with success. cane gives you advantage of range and possibility to inflict force in more focused way. surely it's good idea for elders, if they are willing to have a lifestyle and mentality to defend themselves. age gives plenty disadvantage in reflexes & strength.. good sturdy cane with good techniques and healthy lifestyle can balance it out, so they can protect themselves against drunkards, messed up teens and such.

    I am a "senior", my current "cane" if you can describe it as such is a custom forearm crutch. Not so easy to use in self defence as a conventional cane, a bit like a very long tonfa I suppose. It would require a very specialised self defence technique, but I guess I could whack your legs with it a pinch. Interesting point though, nobody does threaten me around here and I live in a tough district, it doesn't matter what I can or can't do with it, it looks badass :) I am in the process of making another variant on this theme, thing about them is that they are all an extension of me, they are an integral part of me, made by me, grown by me. They do attract a fair amount of attention as well. No I would not like to take on an adversary who is trained in any kind of cane technique, but when is that ever going to happen in real life? I had a bit of fun a few years back against a fencer with my ordinary walking cane, I think I acquitted myself well enough under the circumstances. I have arthritis but I do garden, and that keeps me mobile and as I also manage a small woodland plot I can use billhooks, slashers, machetes, scythes and such with aplomb, if you want to have a go at me, I shall just pretend you are a stubborn bramble or hawthorn.

      Thank you for commenting! @AmericanCaneSelfDefense  2 года назад

      Thank you for your inquiry MTJ-sounds like you may not have watched the video in its' entirety or missed the message altogether. The solution/answer is to get proper Cane training as opposed to ignoring tactical principles, watering down sound Cane applications to fit "senior limitations" and clumping it under the category of "senior cane self defense". That is plain irresponsible. The fact is no one has trained more 60-70-80 yr effectively in tactical Cane Self Defense than ACSD. First time I've formally visited the ideas of cane self defense. Great vid, instruction, and information. I'm an advanced pickleball player and regularly play with much younger players (i.e. I'm still fast, coordinated, and strong). With the proper training I can see that cane self defense would be awesome and VERY frightening to an opponent.

    Are you saying NO to Senior learning " " Cane Defense "? I am thinking of taking a class at age 80. Not a normal Senior. I use to box, took judo and karate. I still fly my powered para glider, hike, teach my survival programs at 7,000 ft, fish at 11,000 ft, and dance with large, wild ladies at 5,000 ft. Ha. NO goofy golf, NO foolish tv football, never drank whiskey .Nor smoked.
    So, I think learning how to use a cane will be interesting and useful. My .357 is getting heavy ( I have training and a permit. ) But you have some great points I agree. My Aunt wanted a .45 at age 90 - I suggested NO. A can of Wasp Spray, 20 ft through the heavy steal screen door in Sun City , Ariz is best. We all need to " Get the facts - weigh - and decide .
    I would suggest that "Ol Foolish China Joe " & " Crazy Nancy P. " keep their Security Guards - NOT go for Cane Defense. Ha. " Mtn Mel " - Ret. 59-82 USN SERE-POW Inst / VN Combat Vet. in W. Colo. tipi survival skills camp. THANKS. God Bless America.

      Thank you for commenting Mel! Happy to learn you're not "average" 👊🏻 The message of this segment is we are all for proper Cane Self Defense training based on tactical principles. What we say NO to is what many are teaching as follows: the perception that since seniors are "older, weaker, slower, etc." we should teach them hokey pokey cane techniques that violate tactical self protection principles. The fact is ACSD is the world leader in training Caners ages 67-83. Hundreds trained and certified world wide in pandemic times alone. Our "vintage" Caners are proof of the power of ACSD Cane Training. We encourage you to get Cane Trained and you can do it from the comfort of home with professional instruction and corrective feedback.
