The best camera is the one you always bring with you. That’s my iPhone 12 Pro.. now, this is the best second and it is a pro. This is simply amazing. Not for landscape photographer, who will have time to move from a zoom like this to something else.
Not necessarily. I don't really have time for that, though I have looked over my review information for the Sigma. The Sigma has more distortion and isn't quite as sharp as the Tamron.
Thanks for a great Definitive Review, Dustin. I have both the Sigma 28-70 and now this G2 version. After comparing them, I can safely say that everything is better on the G2. The only real strength I can see for the Sigma is if you demand the absolute smallest. Sigma 28-70 will now be sold of. Congratulations Tamron!
You do great work Dustin, I’ve been following you for a few years now and your reviews are always in depth, yet succinct. This was another great review for a great lens.
Just got a copy of the 28-75 G2. Didn't think I wanted it, but I'm a little disillusioned with my Sony 24-105mm f4 at the long end, and the sale price made it worth the chance, $699. Color me impressed. This is a great lens. Contrast and sharpness are exceptional, and the bokeh is gorgeous. It even beats the Sony 24-70mm GM2 in sharpness overall, IMO. I have access to a 24-70 GM2 and did a landscape comparison on my A7r5. The Sony might have been a hair sharper in the center at 100%, but not by much if at all. Very close. No contrast advantage to the Sony either. Where they differ, at least in my testing, is the Tamron is tack center-sharp in the broad midframe all the way out to the edge, but then falls apart a bit in the very extremes. The Sony GM2 is good in the midframe, but not quite center level sharp, like the Tamron, and does better at the extreme edges and corners. For me then, I, shockingly, prefer the Tamron. Even though I shoot primarily landscapes, I'll take extraordinary midframe performance of the Tamron to the Sony's excellent extreme edge/corner performance. I also compared it to my Voigtlander 65mm f2 APO, and the results were basically the same. The Voigt again might have been just a hair sharper in the center, but the Tamron still bested it, at least at wider apertures in the midframe. Color and contrast were basically on par as well. I never expected this good a performance out of this lens. And as for my 24-105mm, it's also very sharp in the center (maybe a hair less sharp than the other lenses mentioned here), but the Tamron at 75mm cropped in is sharper than the Sony 24-105 at 105mm. So I gain an f2.8 aperture and don't even lose any telephoto reach. The 24mm on the other hand is a sacrifice, but I can live with it. I can stitch a panorama if I need to, or bring my 20mm f1.8 G or 16-35mm f4 PZ along.
And another great review, with plethora of details and facts. Thank you Dustin ! For those who think this lens does not go wide enough (first, think again but globally, then) the 17-28 f/2.8 will be the best complement. Resulting in a 17 to 75 mm focal range at f/2.8 all the way... for 1800 USD/Euro (or so). How about it ? Anyone fancy traveling back in time, when zoom lenses barely were "birthday lenses" with bottle bottoms as glass elements ? No, really ? OK, so let's be happy we have such exceptional pieces of gear !
Very good review! It looks like it's improved in several areas. I can see how people who are okay with 28mm- would spring for it, especially if the bokeh is a little better overall. I don't know what it is in euros but here in Sweden it is 290USD more expensive than the G1 version (I suspect the gap will be even wider this friday) (edit. the Black Friday, not this upcoming friday :) ). Some of the more high-end Tamrons have not been priced sympathetically here compared to elsewhere like the US while the lower end have been rather competitive. I don't know what to make of it. Well, good thoughtful review as always : )
Had the first version with my a7III, sold it because I got bored with how easy it was to shoot with it, replaced it with a bunch of G Master primes because I'm a spoiled brat. Light, compact, good AF, for most hobbyist it's the only lens they might need.
Hi Dustin, thank you for your detailed review. I was debating between SIgma 24-70 and Tamron 28-75mm G2 but after seeing your review and reading couple of good articles online. I felt Tamron G2 surpasses Sigma in many departments wrt this particular lens. I have booked my copy of Tamron, thank you again. I hope I will be happy with my purchase.
For only $20USD more, this is an exceptional update! Dustin, in your opinion, would it be worth it looking at this lens if I already have the 24-70 Sigma Art?
I would only consider that change if you find the weight of the Sigma a problem (or perhaps the more extreme distortion). The Tamron is sharper, but probably not enough to be all that noticeable.

In Poland price difference is 378 USD. I have G1 and want to have more pleasant bokeh and faster / more accurate AF during quick action (4 years old child on f2.8). Dustin, do you think Sigma 28-70 can meet this requirement or rather should go with G2 (here it's over 2x more expensive than used G1).
I definitely like the G2 better than the Sigma, but my biggest reason for recommending it might be the focus speed because of what you have described. I don't think the Sigma would be any faster than your G1, but the G2 is definitely faster.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Didn't you notice AF speed for Sigma as Dpreview here: ruclips.net/video/ZLxGTi66gVg/видео.html ? My Tamron G1 has much slower AF than on this video. With what body did you test Sigma 28-70?
I am surprised Sony has not chosen to send you the new Sony A7 IV to review. I hope they do as I look forward to your impressions whenever that might be
@@DustinAbbottTWI That is true. The V1 is still good. And it will not be worse because of the V2 Version. But i have to say, that the new look of the 28-75 is really nice. And as you say in your review. Tamron improves the lens right points.
Great detailed review as usual, but I really wish you had dug deeper into the Sigma 24-70 DG DN art - a bit more expensive but wider, but not sure how they compare optically and on the bokeh front. It will also be interesting to see what Sony does with the G master update because the price is impossible to justify versus the Tamron or the sigma.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Definitely =) What I would really point out (due to personal experience with other lenses) is the focus ring. This one is right on point. It's smooth, while giving you enough resistance for precise control. Definitely a lot better than, for example, Sony's 24-105 G which is very smooth but doesn't have any resistance to it. Being able to program linear/non-linear focus pulling is very nice, too. Once again a step in the right direction by Tamron.
Hey Dustin - Another great video! Thanks for your review on this! I was waiting for this one. I had a question. As far as sharpness, detail and overall resolving power, how does this lens fair on the Sony A1. I noticed when I upgraded to the A1 and used the Tamron 28-75 v1, I found that my images especially in 75mm was noticeably less sharp than my g-master lenses. I’m curious did you see improvments overall when mounted to the Sony A1 and how does it compare to g-master lenses when you take into consideration sharpness, contrast, and resolution?
I can't recall exactly, but what you are describing is a fixed rear element that few lenses have. It requires an optical design that needs that piece of glass.
Which lens would you recommend for street photography and traveling, this Tamron or the Sigma 24-70? Price difference is only 90€. I guess that the Sigma has better build quality, but it`s 300g heavier... How do corner sharpness and esp. autofocus speed compare? Sure, the main difference is 24 vs 28mm, but that`s not very important for me.
I'm not sure the Sigma actually has better build quality than the G2; it's quite nice and thoroughly weather sealed. The Tamron has the faster AF speed, though the Sigma is still very good. Less distortion on the G2 at 28mm vs 24mm on the Sigma, though if you zoom into 28mm the Sigma would be closer. I personally prefer the Tamron, but if you don't have another wide angle option, the Sigma might be the better choice due to that extra 4mm of width (which DOES make a difference)
Hello Dustin, I'm one of the guys that got this lens right at launch day. I still have it, but I've never hated a lens this much... to the point that I was filming interviews with the Zeiss 16-35 f/4 as it looked much more natural. IDK... I feel so disappointed I think I won't even try to buy the updated model.
I'm still questioning to buy this lens or the sima. I had the version one and I was disappointed with the build quality. The rubber just pealed of the focus ring after two years. Now I'm looking what's the best option.
I really like this new lens. Some have complained of dust in the Sigma over time, but I only had a loaner and never saw that. I did have a long term copy of the G1 lens and never had the issue you had.
Great review as always! How do you think this lens compares to the sigma 28-70? I tried this lens and the one you reviewed at the camera store, but i couldn’t really put both through their paces. But anecdotally, the sigma has superb rendering and bokeh, yet manages to still be quite sharp on my a1. What do you think?
Hi Dustin , thanks for the great work you do here. We really trust your opinion so I need to ask if this lens will resolve my a7riv well enough ? I’m thinking on switching from sigma 24-70 because of weight but worrying if I’m going to miss any noticeable iq. Thanks for your time.
Thanks for the great review ! If I'm fine with minimum focal length of 35mm - would you recommend the new 35-150 in terms of sharpness and autofocus or this one ?
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks , so I assume autofocus and sharpness are more or less on par .. :) I'll go for it myself I think as well. Very luring focal range indeed
I'm curious too. I guess this lens is a bit sharper at 70mm. But Sigma still has a tad smoother bokeh at 70mm. This has more features, Sigma is smaller.
I asked Dustin the same question. But i tried both of these lenses at the camera store today on my a1. It wasn’t super thorough tests like Dustin would do. But anecdotally, i feel the sigma produced smoother/nicer rendering at the cost of a bit of sharpness. Plus the sigma is a bit lighter. But we’ll see if Dustin chimes in, as his testing is more thorough.
Ok. I take back what i said. Because i bought the sigma 28-70, then gave it back lol. I got the Tamron 28-75 g2 in its place. And I’m blown away. Even wide open, it’s so sharp, it feels like a prime lens! And it’s rendering quality is sublime. I have no idea what Tamron did here, but it’s amazing. And as someone who generally shoots with prime lenses, that’s really high praise.

@@simonp8088 That's very useful! I am considering to buy one of those two so this really helps my decision.
Hi Dustin, do you notice any noise coming from the lens when it is on your camera? I noticed some after attaching it to my a7R III. It's fairly mild, although I hear it when I'm up to the EVF. Focusing doesn't actually seem to make a difference really. It sounds like mild high pitched electronic noise, it seems to be less noticable in video which makes me think it is probably within spec. Just want to confirm there is nothing wrong with my copy. I'm a bit worried it might get picked up by internal or external microphones when recording, and besides that it just feels a lot less premium than I was expecting. I never heard any reviewers mention this before buying it.
I don't remember any particular sound, but it's probably fine. I would recommend monitoring it and if it worsens at all, get the lens serviced or replaced.
it is funny how EVERYTIME I need to buy gear, I come here first, if Dustin gives a green light then I buy it, if he does not, I just simply pass, no questions asked. (just ordered one just now, thank you Sr.)
Hi Dustin, I don't want to keep flogging a dead horse here, but would you say that this zoom compares favorably to the 35mm f/1.8 prime (from Sony) in terms of contrast and sharpness?
I'm wondering about the difference in colors of the two lenses at 24:30. Is it the lens outputting different colors, or the camera itself using a different white balance?
That really depends on how important going as wide as 24mm in the lens is. I prefer the size and performance of the Tamron, myself, but only because I have other lenses to cover the wider focal lengths.
Great review! Thanks a lot! Quick question tho. Do you think its worth to pay 100 usd more on top of tamron 17-70 price for get this lens for my little fx30. I mainly shoot b rolls in nature or in city. Some photos as well. I already have sigma 16mm f1.4 prime for wide. Thanks for reply in advance.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Absolutely does! I was able to test one of my lenses by comparing it to yours using bills. Thank you so much for all your great work Dustin!
Hello Dustin. Nice video. I'd like to ask you for some advice if possible. I recently bought a Sony A7 III for 1480€ brand new on a local store here in Spain, and I was thinking at first to buy the first version of this lenses as I found it for around 569€ (second handed). On the other hand, I found the G2 for 804€ (new). My budget is quite low, around 800-900€, so I was planning to get the first version and maybe another wide angle lens, like the Samyang 24mm F1.8 or the Sigma 20mm F1.4. Do you think the first version is still a solid lens for an all-around lens?
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks a lot. After some thoughts I decided to go for the first version and with the money left I plan to buy a prime wide angle lens.
Im debating getting the tamron 28-75 g2 or sigma 24-70 dg dn. The price difference is marginal. It looks like sigma is better in sharpness but I dont know if I would be happy to carry all that weight around...
The Sigma isn't actually sharper. I would say the primary reason to choose the Sigma is if going to 24mm is a big priority for you. Otherwise I would personally go with the Tamron.
For Canon EOS R - Landscape photography on a tripod at 24mm. Does it make sense to buy RF 24-70 or RF 24-105 L F4? I know that RF 24-70 is sharper at the corners. Does it have better contrast and color rendition? Does it make sense to spend so much more money on RF 24-70 over RF 24-105 L F4 for landscape at 24mm at F8? Basically, my question is - how big is the difference at 24mm at F8? Will I be able to tell the difference on a processed landscape RAW file on 55 inch LG CX OLED? Thank you.
Hmmm, for your application I'd probably just go with the 24-105. I don't see the sense of buying an F2.8 lens (and spending the premium) if you don't actually have the need for the wider aperture.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for the reply! I love your videos - very informative, professional and detailed. You have sold me on the RF 14-35. Unfortunately, Capture One Pro have not released the lens profiles yet. They have only released profiles for the original RF lenses from 2018. I will wait until the summer (my next scuba diving vacation) and I was thinking of buying an Ikelite housing for Canon EOS R and getting the RF 14-35. However, those housings are huge and expensive. Not very travel friendly. I did some underwater photography back in 2006- 2010 with Canon Powershot Pro 1. I might just get the Sony RX VA instead for the underwater.

There's always something extra that I could have/should have done, but I'm limited by time and opportunity like everyone else. This isn't my full time job.
The measurements you gave out were a bit deceiving because you state them with the barrel extended, but the measurements are for the lens when the barrel is closed. When the barrel is extended the G2 is more than 0.2mm shorter.
@@DustinAbbottTWI yep pretty sure, idk why when I autocorrect on Lightroom I have to hand select the make and the lens is not like Sony or sigma the goes automatically, maybe the firmware version on my a7iii…
It's odd that you report the sound at a particular F-stop. That shouldn't really change the sound or performance of the focus motor. I didn't really notice any focus sound with it.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I just subscribe and will like 5 videos for responding. The noise can be heard when I change my aperture from f4.5 to f22 without requesting focus. Should I return it? I just signed up to the warranty.
Hopefully Nikon and Canon will open up their platforms for third party development. I'm sure Tamron would love to release this lens on those platforms and have access to hundreds of thousands of additional customers.
@@DustinAbbottTWI agreed, it’s fully Nikon and Canon who are the roadblocks here. I guess they want to flesh out their own systems before they open up the mount. At the end of the day it does all come to to money unfortunately.
I doubt very much that hundred thousands or even millions of people buy these lenses. Most probably the 1st generation lens has been sold somewhere in the 5 figure realm, not more. There are simply not that many people photographing with expensive FF equipment.
The biggest improvement compared to the first generation should be the manufacturing. G1 is made in China, but G2 is made in Japan. That's probably why G2 has better sharpness (especially corners) and build quality.
I've never reviewed Nikon and don't have any investment in their equipment, so I'd have to start from scratch (and spend a lot of money!) I also don't really have the time to add a new brand.
You do great reviews and at the same time you are advertising irrelevant and dodgy-looking wallets, please be selective of what you advertise otherwise you risk taking a massive hit to your reputation and credibility which is what ultimately will make you the most money down the line....

That's a shame, as this is a very improved lens.
Thanks for the review Dustin. I was so hoping Tamron had improved the bokeh....I'll probably buy this lens....via your link....
They definitely have improved it. I'll be doing a direct comparison video next week.

Awesome - thanks for the info!
In the two copies I tested, the Tamron is sharper and has superior contrast.
My comment isn't ego driven over the top and trying to educate you. Rather, I want to say thank you for another fabulous review.
I appreciate that!
This definitely will resolve just fine.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for taking the time to answer…….🙂
Thanks for the great review !
If I'm fine with minimum focal length of 35mm - would you recommend the new 35-150 in terms of sharpness and autofocus or this one ?
I'm going with the 35-150mm. I love the focal range.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks , so I assume autofocus and sharpness are more or less on par .. :)
I'll go for it myself I think as well. Very luring focal range indeed
That lens looks like a winner, perfect match for Sony E-Mount. Just wondering if you got a good copy or they are all nice.
Mine seemed to be pretty consistent with the MTF charts, so I would say they all should be nice.
How does the G2 compares with the Sigma 28-70mm?
I'm curious too. I guess this lens is a bit sharper at 70mm. But Sigma still has a tad smoother bokeh at 70mm. This has more features, Sigma is smaller.
This is a pressing question!
Thank you for the excellent review, Dustin. Does this lens match the A7CR HMP camera well? Better than the 24-105 F4 from Sony?
I only tested the 24-105 on 42MP, so I don't have a good frame of reference.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank You, Dustin. And the Tamron 28-75 2.8 g2, can this lens deal with the HMP?
Brilliant review as always! Thanks!
You're welcome.
Wonder if there will also be a G2 of the Tamron 17-28? Or maybe it's good enough already? Hmm...
That's a fair question. It is a good lens, for certain, though now the feature set doesn't match the new aesthetic. We'll see.
Brilliant review 👌🏽Do you think you'll be reviewing the Samyang 24-70 f2.8 FE soon?
The short answer is, "I don't know". My previous contact at Samyang hasn't been returning my emails. I don't know if they are still with the company.
it is funny how EVERYTIME I need to buy gear, I come here first, if Dustin gives a green light then I buy it, if he does not, I just simply pass, no questions asked. (just ordered one just now, thank you Sr.)
I'm glad to help out.
this vs 24-70 Sigma Art please ?
Hi Rafael - I don't actually have the Sigma on hand anymore. The Tamron is definitely the sharper lens, though.
awesome review and lens, by the way what is that noise near the end of the video.
I'm not sure offhand.
Thank you very much for your help you explain everything well
You are welcome!
Just what I was waiting for; your definitive review. Thank you 👌🏼
My pleasure!
Hi Dustin, I don't want to keep flogging a dead horse here, but would you say that this zoom compares favorably to the 35mm f/1.8 prime (from Sony) in terms of contrast and sharpness?
I've just purchased this lens. I have the 20mm G lens to cover the wide angle and I'll probably add the 35mm G master at some point.
I'm wondering about the difference in colors of the two lenses at 24:30. Is it the lens outputting different colors, or the camera itself using a different white balance?
The white balance is actually identical, so it is the difference in the optical glass.
Thanks. This or the Sigma 28-70 2.8 DG DN?
That really depends on how important going as wide as 24mm in the lens is. I prefer the size and performance of the Tamron, myself, but only because I have other lenses to cover the wider focal lengths.
Thanks for this prompt review, how would you rate G1/G2 35-75 within the overlaps to new 35-135 lens you just reviewed?
You'll see the details in a comparison video next week. There's some give and take with the new G2.
Thanks for a great review. How would you compare this to Sony 24-105 G IQ wise?
The Tamron is sharper at wide apertures, but at smaller apertures like F5.6 the two will be similar.
I do like this lens better in terms of the rendering and bokeh, so if you can handle it not being super wide on APS-C, then yes.
Great review. Question: are currency bills just as good as test charts?
I personally like my setup better than just the bare chart. It gives a more relatable visual.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Absolutely does! I was able to test one of my lenses by comparing it to yours using bills. Thank you so much for all your great work Dustin!
Do you find the autofocus to be more accurate for video vs the first model?
I would say yes.
I think you'll be happy with it. It remains a good lens even if the G2 version is better.
@@DustinAbbottTWI what about focusing speeds, is the tamron faster than sigma because of its new linear motor?
I think the answer is yes, though I didn't compare them side by side.
I might just get the Sony RX VA instead for the underwater.
awesome and detail review
Thank you
Just checking Dustin is lens available for Canon? Nikon ? Sony?
Only for Sony at this point.
@@DustinAbbottTWI OK thanks for that. Is it possible in the description in future to put what camera its for. Just saying this as a non Sony user. Great videos by the way a fan from Sydney Australia
Wish you would have done some focus tests on action shots.
I'm not really stating them with the barrel extended - that just happened to be a visual on screen.
Canon shooters willing to see these kind of lenses for the RF mount.
Exactly! I move to Sony just because of the G1 of this lens, so much lighter for traveling!
I know. I'm a little ticked at Canon for being so resistant to third party lenses.
Terrific review
Thanks, Larry.
Should I get second hand G1 or Newly G2 version?
For me, the G2 is so much better, but the G1 will be a great value.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you very much.
Do you think they are going to make tamron 17-28mm
I honestly have no idea if they are going to do G2 versions of all these lenses.
Hi, there is dust problem inside the lens, knowing that it is a zoom lens...?
I've never had a problem with the first generation lens over three + years, though, to be fair, I don't live in a highly dusty environment.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you for your answer, I am very careful, I had just heard problems on the sigma 24 70 art, I was wondering.
Hello dustin, have you got samyang 50 1.4 mkii?
No, unfortunately. My contact at Samyang hasn't been responding to my emails.
My 28-75 g2 just arrived and I’m using on my a7m3 and I’m finding a harsh vignette when I zoom more than 60mm there’s any way I can fix it?
Are you sure you have the lens hood in the right position? Sometimes if it isn't seated correctly it can cause mechanical vignette
@@DustinAbbottTWI yep pretty sure, idk why when I autocorrect on Lightroom I have to hand select the make and the lens is not like Sony or sigma the goes automatically, maybe the firmware version on my a7iii…
Great review, seems like most people don’t care about this one
I don't necessarily think that is true. I had a fairly positive response to a poll I did.
Just got the G2 today. It feels really plastic. Feel cheap tbh. But it is sharp and light.
Hmmm, that's not the impression I get.
Hopefully I’ll be able to score a v1 for an amazing price now that the v2’s out! Fingers crossed I find one :D
I suspect the used market is about to pick up for the V1
I just got the 28-75 g2 at f4.5 the focus motor is loud, is that normal?
It's odd that you report the sound at a particular F-stop. That shouldn't really change the sound or performance of the focus motor. I didn't really notice any focus sound with it.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I just subscribe and will like 5 videos for responding. The noise can be heard when I change my aperture from f4.5 to f22 without requesting focus. Should I return it? I just signed up to the warranty.
Tamron, please please make these lenses for the Nikon Z mount
That's mostly on Nikon. They need to open up to third party lenses
I really wish Tamron would make these for Z mount . . .
Hmmm, you may be right, though I think sales are definitely in the tens of thousands at minimum to get to being bestselling
@@DustinAbbottTWI Most probably!
The biggest improvement compared to the first generation should be the manufacturing.
G1 is made in China, but G2 is made in Japan. That's probably why G2 has better sharpness (especially corners) and build quality.
I took a look at that, and you're right. Manufacturing went back to Japan.
I dunno in my country new tamron is like 300euro more expensive 2:07
Wow - that's a big difference.
@@DustinAbbottTWI yeah just checked its 989 and 697. Is new one worth 300 euro upcharge?
Why do you not review anything Nikon?
I've never reviewed Nikon and don't have any investment in their equipment, so I'd have to start from scratch (and spend a lot of money!) I also don't really have the time to add a new brand.
You do great reviews and at the same time you are advertising irrelevant and dodgy-looking wallets, please be selective of what you advertise otherwise you risk taking a massive hit to your reputation and credibility which is what ultimately will make you the most money down the line....
With all due respect, Fantom Wallets has been a great, loyal supporter of this channel. They've stood by me, and I'm happy to stand by them.
A little bit.
I am just disappointed with this lens
one of the thing is the youtubers never say what camera use with the lens...
In this case....
Curious - you don't elaborate on why you are disappointed with the lens (I'm certainly not) and I specifically state what camera I tested the lens on at the 15:50 mark.
