Merieke is really awesome and you vid, as always, is GREAT. But, in order of using her, using the stack is crucial... Because if you tap her to steal something and IN RESPONSE untap her and tap again, you can steal more things at once with the same effect and keep them all. This can really bring this commander to a whole new level

From someone who’s had a Merieke deck for a couple years now, I’m glad you finally did a deck tech on her. She’s a really cool commander (albeit a huge pain in the ass). She’s very versatile in terms of how to build the deck, and she’s one of my favorite decks ever to play. Thanks for making this, DJ :)
Thornbite Staff is a one-sided board wipe with her! Untap her with it attached to kill the creature you stole, and get a trigger to untap her again. Respond to the trigger by taking something else, and you get a combo going.
I play Rubinia as my primary theft commander. The deck has a group hug element to it and its really fun to steal the nice things that you help them cast!

I have a deck very similar to this but it was budget. You have a lot of the more expensive cards in there, if i ever want to upgrade this deck I'll look back at this video!
As DJ didn't mention this, I wanted to add, that it is possible to steal multiple creatures with Merieke at once. If you put multiple instances of her ability on the stack through untapping effects, she won't destroy the targeted creatures when she becomes untapped, as her ability has not yet resolved.
This means that "Pemmin's Aura" and "Freed from the Real" let you take control of any number of creatures equal to the number of the blue Mana you have got left. Also you are able to take over the whole board with the "Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter" combo (or alternatively tap all opponents permanents during their upkeep, with one of the "tap target permanent" creatures)
Merieke was actually the very first commander I ever built, so this video was pretty nostalgic for me.
I really thought he was going to mention Sen triplets for this deck, what better cards to steal than directly from the hands of your opponent. 😈
She steals your stuff, refuses to give it back, and breaks it when she's done with it. I call her the ex-wife.
If I ever build this deck I will call it the Ex-Wife!

I use Tidewater Minion and Illusionist Bracers to untap multiple permanents of all types repeatedly

I like cards like Frontline Medic to grant indestructible. Then you get to keep the stolen creature when Merieke's untap resolves. And Willbreaker to essentially turn all your untappers into mini-Meriekes'

If you want Merieke to be like Rambo you can put intruder alarm and watch it destroy everything that enters 🦄
I'm 3 years late for this list, but thanks for it. I'm looking at using ishai/tevesh to steal stuff, some useful ideas in here! I could suggest intruder alarm for your list.....but I'm only halfway through the vid so far.

I built a similar but less spendy Merieke deck a few weeks ago. It is so much fun to play and I feel like it really attacks opponents from a unique angle. And there is nothing better than the look on their faces when you successfully cast Pemmins Aura on Merieke and it dawns on them what is about to happen

I have a regular deck that I have literally killed 7 people in one turn ... on turn 3 of the game. I had my full 20 life. It is hated above all.
@@shawnwilt7196 Yeah the version I posted above could definitely use an upgrade if you want to make it more competitive but it's still pretty fun as is. Every game is different cause you are essentially playing with your opponent's decks
@@EbonAvatar none of my banned decks cost more than like $60 or $70. My most hated deck costs like $30.
This was one of the first commanders I built around years ago. I do love the deck but it does slow the game down or I become enemy number one. So I don’t play it very often. Hahaha

The second EDH deck I built. Just mind control, untap abilities, and sac outlets. Don't forget a nice Rings of Brighthearth and Thousand-Year elixer. Most important cards in the deck.
Also Overtaker sucks. It's all about OLD MAN OF THE SEA.
This is a very creative deck build
I'm not all the way through, so I don't know if you've mentioned it yet, but if your untap shenanigans are at instant speed, then with merieke you can steal multiple things by abusing the stack instead of having to let each but the last one you steal die
Idk if this is said in the vid but you can steal multiple creatures with Merieke and not have them be destroyed, if you untap her while tap ability is still on the stack you cap her and take another creature while both are on the stack so the first creature doesn't see the untap
Aura of Dominion is more efficient alternative to freed From the Real for Merieke. You can steal the creature, tap it to untap Merieke and repeat this process
Also it can tap inspired creatures
I couldn’t play my Merieke deck anymore because everyone stopped playing creatures since they were afraid that they get stolen. Maybe I will try again someday ^^
DJ what about thada adel and coffin queen? This was the first commander I've ever built and one of the only ones I've never gotten bored of or disassembled. Keep up the awesome techs.
Don't forget you can steal more than one thing by untapping her in response to the tap effect. If you can do this you can steal more than one thing per turn.

Intruder Alarm could be broken here. You boardwipe anytime a creature enters.
I have one of her, and I REALLY want to build this deck, but I'm already on thin ice with my playgroup for playing my "oppressive" control decks like Savra, Aboshan, and Firesong&Sunspeaker. They aren't competitively built, my meta just hates control/disruption.
So for now she has a home sitting in my cube.

I love Merieke, is my main deck since i started play Commander. However, i just cant follow your advices on a lot of cards. The meta in my friends group is way too aggro. Cant spend 6 mana on Arcanis, need to wrath those goblins man XD

So, I am going to build this but I think I am going to try to work in a sacrifice theme and use cards that allow me to return the creature targeted by them back to play when it dies. Black has a lot of those. Sack outlets like ashnods altar, blasting station. Stuff like thst.

I love this channel. But I absolutely hate these kinds of decks. To me, Esper control or some variant thereof, or Stax, is the antithesis of Commander. If I'm taking the night off away from my family to play cards, I don't really want to sit down and watch Counterbalance, Merieke, Sensei's Divining Top, and Power Artifact strapped to Grim Monolith lock me out of a game. The same goes for those who play Stax strategies. Social awareness is nothing new in Commander. Look no further than the unwritten social contract around not playing mass land destruction. Why? Because people want to actually play the game that they've taken time off of their lives to come together and play. I am NOT saying that I only want people to play the way I want to play, or that I want some soft fluffy safe environment where I don't have to fear any disruption as I play. That is just as bad and doesn't make gameplay interesting either. Great video either way, DJ! Just a reminder to the world that it's ok to disagree with something while remaining civil and constructive. Happy brewing to all. What does everyone else think?

I built Mereike 3 or 4 years ago 🤔 your playing her wrong
1st tap and target a creature hold priority
2nd untap her with whatever source is available... no it doesn't kill the creature you have targeted because you have not actually gained control of thus said creature yet after untapping merieke hold priority at the same spot
3rd target another creature repeat steps 1 & 2
4th as long as she is tapped at the end of your untapping and re-tapping you gain control of all the creatures last one first comes to your side and so forth as the stack 😉 goes
5th please pronounce her name correctly it is French so I understand not knowing it 😅but I am going to give you shit anyways
