Hey prof. Speaking of underused cards, I’m curious to know your thoughts on Ritual of the machine.
I'm not in the magic loop but also I do play sometimes so I guess R.I.P. tournaments =/ dont they have money why did they even do that?
I freaking loved the mars trilogy great recommendation! I also adored aurora by robinson as well. It had one of the best definitions of love that I have read, likely the best in sci fi.
Where can I get the those blank cards to make proxies from? I’m in college and can’t afford duals, fetches, yawgmoths Will etc. for my casual commander and the cube I’m building
@@ValentineCorp They can be found in Zendikar and Kaldheim Draft Boosters if you are going to open some. Or just buy them online or from your local game stores (at the cost of a few basic lands).
WOTC HATES HIM!!
Find out how this man paid NOTHING for a gilded drake, using only a marker and blank card!
I had this same idea during your extended universe video.
Before I catch hate, I prepaid for my box of Timespiral Remastered. At my LGS while buying a Mystery Booster that I should have checked the price of before buying, but hey it was a decent pack and I know I have a place For at least the Chasm Sulker.
I use proxies as well. Have been using Art cards for proxies since Modern Horizons.
You have my attention..
I'll watch if there is also a circle with an arrow pointing to something, preferably red.
HERESY!!!
I can't believe that I've never heard of Strands of Night before, it would be downright amazing in my Lord Windgrace deck.
Ive seen three of them before, but yeah. Strands of Night is really powerful. It looks like it can be activate on instant speed, which is a really big upside. You can wait until prior end, instead of hoping that your creatures will survive for the next rotation! So it plays exelent around boardwipes in that way!
Strands was an old, old card, originally from Weatherlight; it's only other printing was in 7th. I've used it before, and combining it and tortured existence, especially with any cards you can bring back to your hand from play like Cavern Harpy, you can get some really funky grave engine shenanigans going. Combining it with a reasonable way to supply swamps to the party to keep it going you can really go places.
That's the first thing I thought, windgrace eats up all the downsides of this card and allows for an even deeper graveyard base in the deck centric around all graveyard mechanics instead of just land in the grave.
It's just ok
@@ungekb3499 I mean, in Moldy... Essentially it costs one... And an extra creature play.
The greatest accomplishment of Wizards of the Coast has been to convince people that they actually need the official cards to play the game.
I think they have dis-illusioned all of us with Magic 30th.
yup
You do if you want to play mtg. Otherwise you're free to play other games
@@commandpower1987*a game virtually identical to mtg, just without expensive cardboard.
@@commandpower1987 Correction, you do if you want to play MTG at a tournament. And even then, that might not be true any more for LGS tournaments.
That is my goal most of the time in commander games, play a card that everyone at the table goes “what the heck is that?” It feels amazing to pull something like that out to throw a wrench in the plans of someone with a deck that costs like 5-6x the amount of mine, especially if it’s just a carbon copy of one of the common high power decks.
I love seeing that reaction on a table. It's why my Force of Savagery will always be an auto-include in my Kresh, The Blood-braided deck.
Shared Fate is a fun one to wreck EVERYONE'S plans and cause some weird interactions.
@@blazingfuryoffire1 eww, I like it, looks like a card I would probably play in my Alela enchantments deck.
How do you research such cards?
@@SeniorAdrian some are just old cards I already have but others I go on edhrec look at the cards others use for a deck I want to make then if I find some I look up the effect on gatherer to see if there are other cards with the same effects that might be cheaper.
Let’s see how much these cards jump in the next few days :)
Probably closer to let's see how long until these cards jump XD
Just bout a playset of each. 🤣🤣🤣
Lmao true. Thats why I love when someone makes an "obscure" or "under used" cards list that unknowingly incorporates Reserved List cards and then I get to see my MTG stonks rise. People act like they're helping build awareness in the game, but the secondary effect kinda has a back fire and in turn makes the game more expensive for people to play those specific cards once mass awareness is given.
@@clocktowers1 When Mitch brought up gold bordered cards in commander, I was stoked for my gains. I’ve been hoarding and buying gold bordered RL cards for a while now, because I knew one day they’d grow exponentially. And boy did they.
@@venomousnemesis7027 Dude so I don't like them or invest in them because ugly, but that's hella smart. See the thing is, those were problematic in regards to the reserved list so we'll probably never get TE cards again. People don't like them much because ugly, but functionally they work and they are official WOTC product. That has weight. And as "real" versions of reserved list cards keep going up, eventually they get so expensive that it's out of the budget zone for the common man so they have to settle for the TE. Well if enough people get the mentality: "Regular too expensive, TE budget" then naturally the TE card rise as well. It's just a matter of when a large portion of the player base has to bite the bullet and realize that the TE is their only "affordable option." It's definitely a more long term gambit, but I respect every bit of that plan. I bought TE Grim Monolith a few months ago for $20, look at it now. Currently I'm trying to squeeze a bit on the market for my favorite reserved list cards which are Repercussion and Varchild's Warriders. My speculation says watch out for those two cards, but take all my advice with a grain of salt because I go with what i like before what's "right" sometimes.
7 Cheap Commander Cards You Never Knew You Needed That Are Now No Longer Cheap Because of This Video
7 cheap commander cards and now you know why they are cheap (because they cost 4-6 mana than to their counterpart, e.g. Maze of Ith vs Invulnerability!?)
Pretty accurate
Everything is cheap if you proxy. See the matrix.
7 Commander cards you think are legendary because they are
First up we have Wayfarer's Bauble...
When hidden cheap gems always come up, I always tell people about Righteous Aura! It's around 15-30 cents
"1W Enchantment:
W, Pay 2 life: The next time a source of your choice would deal damage to you this turn, prevent that damage."
Use it on my marchesa
It's the poor man's Forcefield.
@@luciencloutier3035 it actually has a lot more applications than Forcefield does. One example that I run in my Ayli lifegain is Righteous Aura + Command the Dreadhorde. Only 2 life for all creatures and planeswalkers in all graveyards? Yes please! xD
I'm honestly amazed that Spice8Rack didn't smash through the wall with an army of cartoon proxies during the opening.
He was too busy being a tankie
@@Cryxboy You wouldn't know a Tankie if it bit you in the ass.
@@Cryxboy Spice made an entire video about Anarchism and you think he's a tankie LMAO.
@@Cryxboy yeah, you know fuck all about shit. You just lurk in leftist spaces trying to co-opt terms that we use without ever even understanding what they mean.
@MakeRUclipsGreat Again (and doesn't that name just say it all) - quick rundown. There's a big difference between anti-authoritarian left, who are generally well intentioned even if I personally think their views are impractical, and hard-line authoritarian left, i.e. tankies. Hell, there's a big difference between mild authoritarian left and tankies. George Orwell, for instance, was a staunch socialist who fought in an anarchist militia (read Homage to Catalonia, it's great), and he hated communists with a passion.
Why the split? Because the politics of the authoritarian left are fundamentally incompatible with everybody else. Nobody wants a dictator, aside from the dictator's friends.
How to start a fight - *Mention that proxies are okay to use*
A cool thing that I heard (think it was from the command zone) was that a good way to deal with it is if you already own the card you can proxy it. That way you don’t have to buy 200 mana crypts
@@themonsterlegend3709 There is still a cost barrier for a card game. Proxy whatever you want it's just a game
Really? I don't really know any players that would be mad over that. They would be way more upset over someone bringing a cEDH deck and "pubstomping" with 100% real cards. As long as the power level is in line, who cares?
More players are okay with it than you think.
I'm there to play against you, NOT your wallet. Power level in check, have fun. That simple.
"Cards you've probably never heard of"
*Realize you've been playing this game for 25 years and know all of them*
Yes.
Mood
21 years for me, buuut... I'm only 26 xD
@@damonchadrick245, slow adopter? What kept you from understanding the batch when you were 1? lol
Yep, players with these card stashes know you don't play strands/invulnerability because you immediately unite the rest of the table against you.
I genuinely love that Sanction and Void were the only cards on the list I was familiar with. This definitely beats hitting "random" over and over again on scryfall until something interesting pops up
Here’s one Aurification: every creature gets 1 shot at you, but only one so they better make it count
I didn't even know about this card! Thanks so much man that made my day :). ordering it now
Wow, I thought this was a funny comment, but no, it's an actual card! Wasn't until I read the reply that I realized this.
That's the midas touch enchantment, right? Such a cool effect!
Oooh I like that one a lot, it reminds me of dissipation field.
In the same vein: No Mercy. Hit me? Die! Only one more mana then propaganda/Koskun falls.
Videos like this, while every other MTG Channel is doing stupid Booster Box Openings makes me love the Prof even more!
"Seedtime" nice card in green to punish counter spell, I love it.
Wow, I just looked it up. That card is brutal.
It's not exactly an 'unknown' card, but I'm genuinely shocked at how few players play Hull Breach. It's not really unplayed or a sleeper card of some kind, it's just vastly underplayed for what it is. Hull Breach is pretty much the best Red/Green anti-artifact/enchantment spell available in Commander and it sees less play than many objectively worse cards.
I agree it is good but it's a sorcery, I think that is what is holding it back.
I love Hull Breach. (I rarely leave any mana up to cast Instants outside of my turn). I have 4 Gruul decks, and I run Hull Breach in all of them.
I have soul barrier in my pauper "stop hitting yourself" deck's sideboard, its pretty handy! But now I need strands of night for my gitrog monster edh deck, thank you!
Strands is good in gitrog and muldrotha, just keep in mind that the sacrifice a swamp clause is in the activation cost. If they exile your target in response than you are down a land and your commander is now exiled.
I’m a simple man. I see Beebles, I click video.
End-Raze Forerunners is a great budget option for Craterhoof Behemoth. You trade most of your potential stat boosts for Vigilance, and you save nearly $40 to boot
I wonder why this isn't even on the list. I love obscure cards. And I tried SO hard to fit Void into any BR decks I play. In the end, it was always the first few I cut because it's just not doing enough. Speaking of BR board wipe... I know this is not 20-cent card, but it's definitely not $500 Wheel of Fortune... How about just $6 for Fire Covenant? I rather have 1 Fire Covenant than 30 Void-level cards.
End-Raze Forerunners is pretty good, but it is out of the budget this video is aiming for.
It's a very sound budget alternative, but since it came out in Ravnica Allegiance it is fairly well known compared to the other cards in the video.
Thanks Professor for reminding me of Soul Barrier. I have a Copy of that Card lying in my Collection and simply forgot about it. I will include it directly in one of my decks.
Strands of Night and Crypt Ghast sound like a match made in your opponents' worst nightmares.
Strands of Night and Krrik - now there´s a combo
Strands of Night + Hair-Strung Koto
I use it in my dredgeless value Gitrog Monster deck. The sacrificed Swamp triggers the monster, so generally isn't a drawback at all. Use it to bring back Worldshaper, for instance.
Your Red Mars recommendation made me chuckle because of all the times I've seen the series on your bookcase. But what a time to not have a Card Kingdom affiliate link in the notes.
New format: Penny EDH
Noooooo!!!!! Now ppl will start playing it and the prices will go up!!!
@@themonsterlegend3709 see new cards again I guess...
1 tix commander on mtgo is very remenisent of this.
Pretty sure it’s a format. Haven’t looked into it much, but on the penny dreadful discord there is a channel for pd edh
I enjoy format that Quest For The Janklord use
Love this type of videos Prof. Thank you! I'll use at least 2 of those for sure.
I really love your tie, and the cards you've shown today.
A cheap card I think is often overlooked is Release to the Wind. It's extremely versatile as it can be used to safe either your own pieces or deny your opponent theirs on crucial moments. Strands of Night is really btw prof. Great vid
Notably, Release to the Wind also can go infinite with creatures that copy a spell upon etb, and that in a way more flexible way than blink spells, since you can just choose to stop doing it at any time.
Yes, Release to the Wind is a personal favorite! Naru Meha and Dualcaster Mage combo with it quite nicely, and it can give you infinite storm, unlike other flicker effects.
S/O to EDH Deckbuilding! He loves that card
Radiant purge is SUPER underrated. It basically ends up being 2 cost remove commander.
Super great video thanks, most of those cards surprised and delighted me!
Best type of video! 😍 Hidden budget gems 🤗 Thank you so much prof for sharing! More please!
Those white tech cards are so spicy, they almost make me want to run white. Almost.
My mind blew up when I found out some of this cards only costed 20-30 cents
For now.
@@clocktowers1 Eh, there's a reason they are cheap. I hadn't heard of a few of these (like that blue enchantment). They are super cool cards and great budget options, but for the most part probably anyone playing at mid level power and above isn't going to want to run most of them. I'll definitely get a copy of Soul Barrier, though. I love that it's in blue and I love cards that hate or stax out greedy/rampy players that like to spam lands or tokens. Also shut down people going for foodchain type combos or Kiki combos. Tresspasser's Curse is one of my pet favorites. Is probably overall much better than Soul Barrier, but it's nice to have the effect in blue.
@@LC-wv7tz Dude no doubt and I agree about a "power level-price philosophy," but I remember when I was considering this clunky ass mono U Burn idea I found that on scryfall a year or two back it was really cheap. Some odd cents and probably still is, but I can imagine now that awareness has been brought to it, it will go up to a least a buck or two. Which I don't mind because cards, especially weird old ones should have value.
Hey i just wanted to let u know i think ur chanel and you are refreshing Your takes on certain aspect on the game as well as your overall humor is awesome ive been playing magic since alpha left for awhile and decided to just pick it up again.... Trust me your channel has been a blessing ty keep up the good work
LOVE your videos! I appreciate your position on the proxy "issue" that probably keeps a lot of eager players from having the fun they deserve!
Strands of Night seems pretty good in Gitrog.
Highest value Buyback: Mystic Speculation in Adeliz Spellslinger
Most annoying buyback: forbid in Rielle, the everwise
@@maxandch33se90 Oh DAMN that's pretty legit though
I have come to the point where I am as interested in the ads (and how they are presented) as in the content. Never ever has that been the case for me, including the Super Bowl. Well done Prof
Well Prof, it's always heartwarming to see you talk about our favourite cardboard rectangles:)
Here’s to these cards probably not being budget anymore lol
as of today, some of them still are. Didn't check all of them
Thanks Prof!! I’m new to the game, and finding these gems are essential to my ability to build decks on a budget. Keep ‘em coming!!
Thanks for spotlighting these cards.
I look forward to reanimating both lands and creatures.
If you hate your friends:
Thoughtpicker Witch in token decks.
Yeah specially 1v1. Idk why, but i love disruption strategies and janky, (recuring setup cards) This one is both!
I have a Thoughtpicker Witch in my Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker deck. its quite scary
Yoooooo white counterspells....
*Hell Yeah*
Don't forget Dawn Charm 😀
I've been playing for 7 years and you're still taking me to school. Thanks Prof!
I loved these cards, and really enjoyed this video. Thank you.
Gotta buy them all now before the price spikes
Edit: I was too late for some :(
Wow, I’m surprised by Soul Barrier!
surprised good or surprised bad?
Depends on which side of the board it's on!
@@TolarianCommunityCollege Oh absolutely surprised good. I think I’m going to throw that in my budget Zur the Enchanter deck!
Hearing book recommendations from Prof always warms my heart.
I'm impressed. The title wasn't a clickbait. I had only heard of one of these cards before this video. Well done.
If only there were some kind of rad wireless earphones a hip young fellow like myself could use to listen to these "audio books".
This video is going to age like milk. Ain't that right, Wayfarer me boy?
Milk ages backwards, its wisdom scoured by youthful spite.
This is my favorite prof video of all time. Well done man, great video concept and presentation (love the puns hehe)
I only knew about one of these cards before. Thanks for the tips, Prof!
"There's no tournaments anymore" oh snap, shots fired... But in all seriousness, yeah, without tournaments, what's the point of spending money on magic cards?
How many people actually play tournaments? Competitive Magic is overrated. EDH already refuted the myth that tournaments are what define cards value.
Cardboard fun. Simple as.
Feel like a wizard extracting mana from the land to cast a walking dead character :S
Honestly, I loved this vid. I'd love to see more like it!
Ooh, I love that sanction, a great addition to my Kenrith Super Politics deck. Thanks for making me aware of this one!!
Thank you for making this video. It means a lot since magic can be spendy sometimes but I’m glad it does not need to be ✨
I loved every suggestion here. I just wish I could source old cards like this locally
Dude! I flippin' love your tie. 😊😀 Also I REALLY like the illumination card! I can't wait to order it and play it. I have the other 2 counter spells but I didn't know about that one! Thanks! 😉😁
Thank you Prof, both Illumination and Strands of Night are new to me and the prospect of playing each is exciting.
I literally print all of my decks thanks to you (and the mtg print website) and it's so fun because I can playtest without buying overly expensive cards to decide if I want them/if they're worth it!
I always like videos like these. Definitely going to be buying some of these cards. One card that was mentioned on your channel before was “Dolmen Gate” and I’ve been loving it. “Dolmen Gate” prevents all combat damage to your attacking creatures and that’s my style. I’m an attacker and I want my creatures to live.
I love Strands of Night! My niece has a Gitrog deck that this has to go into. Thanks Professor 🙏🏽🇯🇲🍀🖤
This is as wholesome as useful. The commander community really needs to embrace the first minute of this video.
Thanks prof, as always
Really nice selection. As I always say, card knowledge is the best key when creating a deck. A nice built budget very often surpasses the expensive combinations.
Ty for the permission prof. Going to make my dual lands and gaeas cradle proxies right now!
LOVE IT! please make more videos like this!
Thank you for loving the old white cards ❤️
Start the video thinking I knew one of the cards mentioned, happily didn’t know of any of them. Thanks.🤙
Definitely picking up a few of those. Thanks, Prof! I love cheap busted stuff.
Sweet! Catching this -before- my next card order. :D
Many neat cards in this that I either didn't know or had forgotten about yes.
As for ones unappreciated, you showed the art of one that I love that is hardly ever used. Personal Sanctuary, prevents all damage to you on your own turn. That feels so amazing! And while it might not protect your creatures, it shuts down the downside of many a card.
Love videos like this. It's so considerate to the players.
Thanks for the tip on Void, I'm running an Obosh companion deck so named cmcs are great, as long as I pick an even cmc, I will never lose cards to this
Great video. I love these sorts of videos! I don’t know how popular orcish lumberjack is but thats a great card for me atm!
Honestly, that was one of the most authentic and organic sponsor pitches I've ever heard.
Great video! This would be a wonderful series.
Yup. Demonic Collusion directly into my Kess Storm deck. Thanks Prof.
Great work Prof. Definitely found a few new cards to throw at my play group. Keep this line going. Maybe we can all find some gems
I love the old art on Void. Sweet magic mech!
encourages me more to use many of those budget cards I have lying around - much more fun to work with what you got ;)
I was just thinking of good but cheap mtg cards... great timing on the vid!
Thank you so much Prof! This does make me happy and hasty to get 'em all!
You're very welcome!
Glad Void gets a spotlight. Its one of the few cards I've had a physical copy of. I think it came in a time spiral booster i got when i was eleven, and it was cool as hell. It was old border foil, though, so my little child brain didn't know what to make of it, not to mention that is had like, a mech suit in its art. Don't know where it wound up, but it has a special place in my heart.
Fun list! My favorite is Whiplash Trap. It is an instant that puts two creatures back into their owners hands. It has a CMC of 3 and 2 blue, but when an opponent has two or more creatures come out in one turn it can be casted for one blue. My friends were shocked when I played it the first time!
I interviewed Kim Stanley Robinson a couple of years ago: what a remarkable man, down to Earth and absolutely relatable!
Red Mars was my first audiobook, and I was hooked forever
I had that with "Transmogrifying Licid" in my mutate deck, such a cool card! You mutate onto the Licid and you can turn it into an aura enchant creature at any time.
I adore cards like these. I also didn't know Buyback cards were so cheap! I too love me some Buyback.
I would definitely watch a video series based on this concept.
audiobooks while card sorting is an excellent idea! I usually put on the latest episode of critical role or whichever edh content creator has a recent release.
Cool card that I like using in a lot of tribal decks is universal automaton from modern horizons. Very applicable being only one colorless and having changeling. Also, thx for the great content. Definitely going to hit up the strands of night in my Gitrog monster deck and my other reanimation decks.
I love all of these so much, particularly since so much of them are in my favorite colors!
Spelljack is a really cool card. 3UUU for an instant that says roughly 'counter target spell, then exile it. YOU may cast the card for as long as it remains exiled without paying its mana cost.'
I found this card after pouring through 50 imoti, celebrant of bounty decklists on edhrec and only one had the card. This one is great for imoti because it gets a cascade trigger from imoti like a normal 6 drop, but it's great because let's say you cast an 8 drop, that hits spelljack, and spelljack hits another spell. Well, now you can recast the 8 drop for free (bonus if there is an 'on cast' trigger to double up on) and now you get another spin at the wheel to maybe hit a 7 drop, that hit's a 6 drop, that hits a 5 drop.
And yeah, if you play more eldrazi it's even better because cast a massive 10 mana eldrazi that hits a 9 that hits an 8 that hits a 7 that hits spelljack that hits something else, then do it all again. And eldrazi are better with it too because you get those double on cast triggers in addition to 2 cracks at a huge spell. Or if you didn't hit good value the first time then spelljack gives another go. But yeah, really best with any big spell or even just when you cheat on mana casting a big spell like ghalta or sping/mind to get valuable cascade triggers, all to do it again with spelljack. Or yenno, just cast ulamog that exiles 2 on cast and hit a 9, 8, 7, spelljack, ramp, then after it all resolves recast the ulamog to exile another 2, and hit another 9, 8, 7, 6, ramp. Of course actual cascade hits will vary but it's not anywhere near impossible to cast a huge spell like ulamog and get 20+ free cheated mana in cascade hits, but add in a spelljack and now that is even easier and super super value is lurking, all-the-while the double cast exile 4 in total trigger is a thing. GG.
Also just casually counter and steal one of your opponents best spells while getting the imoti trigger for a ramp card or anything 5 or less. And then if it's sorcery speed on your turn cast their card, and bonus points if it's 6 or above because you'll gain a cascade trigger on that too. Or yenno, someone casts mana drain on an opponent and you spelljack the mana drain. Like any instant with spelljack you'll now forever be able to hold up mana drain for zero mana no matter what you do. So very cool.
i got Soul Barrier for my damage-stax deck, glad to see it on here.
Great show! I love Leadership Vacuum and think more people should play it, it’s so strong! Also, more and more I am putting Key to the City in various decks - it’s a free discard outlet, allows versatile attack options, and can draw cards. And is super cheap!
Thanks prof! Illumination definitely looks awesome! Will slot into my mono-white Sephara deck nicely.
Hope you enjoy it!
Reality ripple 🙌👍 phasing out can be so versatile and useful! Also love rally of wings in my flyers tribal as a multi useful team combo trick to pump damage, save or just surprise blockers with the untap
Fantastic job prof!
Pursuit of Knowledge is a great way of getting card draw in white if used in the right deck, but it is also a secret silver bullet against any deck that wants you to draw too many cards. I personally used it to never discard to handsize in a match with three decks focused around opponents drawing cards
Nice. Didnt know one of these cards. Thank you.
