Hey Professor, big fan, but please consider changing sponsors if at all available. Hello Fresh has been charged for a lot of labor violations
I remember when I was 12 years old I would maybe get a 4th edition booster pack once every 2 weeks or so. If I was really broke i'd get a homelands pack. Nothing in my head ever said "Oh, I can keep this pack for 11 years and sell it for $30" That made magic so much fun. Just collecting cards to make a good deck. I remember getting my 2nd royal assassin for my black/red deck, I was so stoked.
lucky you!! i would get fallen empires when i couldn't afford a revised/4th pack
@@metalplaysgames I _had_ nearly the entire Fallen Empires set since I never had _quite_ the cash for another booster either. I just wanted to open cards and collect cool art. I didn't play much when _I_ was 11-12, cause too many people refused to plan non-ante games.
ex-Stepfather threw out two of my 3 large boxes of cards in a rage when I was a kid, so my total Fallen Empires cards now number only a couple dozen. I was angry then, but now a days that I actually pay attention to things, I noticed how much money I lost from my Unlimited Scrubland and Alpha Mox Emerald. and a *FUCK LOAD* of alpha and beta basic lands. RIP fortune.
@@metalplaysgames I remember those! My dad used to get me a pack of Ice Age every now and again.
This post brought back so many memories thank you
Dad got me 2x 7th Ed packs for my first MTG cards. I always heard they had great art as a child Pokémon collector and as I was also an aspiring artist… when we were in the going out of business Kmart in my town and I happened across the 3/4 full booster box of 7th Ed just kinda crammed into a unorganized shelf of candy bars and other things like that in the checkout I asked if I could get one … I got two. (They like the rest of store were also on clearance…😂) if I remember right they were $1.25 each. … can you imagine stumbling upon such a thing these days 🤯🤯🤯. …
Pulls we’re elvish piper and might of oaks. Btw
"But if I buy a copy of "The Great Henge", it would be a copy of "The Great Henge". If I buy packs, they could contain anything. They could even have a copy of "The Great Henge"!"
- Me in a week (probably)
Solid logic 😂
Is there rehab for gambling addiction?
Party Treeeeeeee
Get out of my head!
Blue's color identity is actually Chinese epic literature.
11:53 I think the reason it hasn’t drop that much is because flawless maneuver actually got reprinted in the Boros precon from phyrexia all will be one
There is no reprint that made me happier in this set more than Arachnogenesis. It's decent card that got ridiculously high in proce though to miniscule supply, and seeing it hear made me so happy as a spider player who has been avoiding getting that card for so long.
Shelob giving the tokens deathtouch is nasty
@@SirToastyToes Yeah. I myself am an Ishkanah stan and have decided not to swap her out for Shelob, but it's most certainly in the 99.
I've been missing arachno for my spider deck too. I may consider shelob since death though is nasty. Currently I have a card to give my spiders/insects toxic
I'm kinda worried that prices won't fall because people won't be mass buying boxes.
@@professionalhater3929
Just a couple weeks ago. We sold a card worth $20 we won in a commander game because we needed the money. Yesterday we saw someone sell a whole collection's worth of cards, and the store we go doesn't accept cards worth less than 5 bucks. It's how they're able to have cards like Chaos Orb and Mox Diamond in their collection, people have to actually sell the cards to them because just opening a load of card doesn't guarantee that there won't be 50 duds. We're not sure how people got this idea that nobody buys packs, because that's what's needed in order to sell singles. Now, we're not saying that you need to buy whole boxes because that's pretty dumb exactly for the same reason as relying on stores to be able to pull good stuff from boxes is dumb. We're saying to buy an individual pack every once in a while because, even if you don't get a card that's worth money and can therefore sell to make a profit so others can buy singles, you'll still find plenty of cards that you didn't know you wanted but still goes really good in your deck. Even common cards nowadays can be really good with quite a few abilities that, while they may be a downgrade compared to their more expensive peers, can really get the job done and even be a staple. And besides, it's fun to be surprised.
Just like Aftermath. No one opens it, price stays high forever.
Greater stock means lower prices even if just a few. Besides comes black Friday the fire sale process will be back
@professionalhater3929 lol, no, they don't. They are smart enough to realize that it is NEVER a good deal. They just buy them from the braindead idiots who don't.
@@felipeguidolin1055Everything in Aftermath cratered, though, Nissa's the only valuable card in the entire set even though several of them are playable.
only just learnt how valuable portal stuff is, thanks! back in 96/97 I started playing mtg thanks to the corner shop that used to sell portal stuff for next to nothing, no one but me was buying them (and I bought loads of them)- got at least 20 of the green and blue tutor cards in my bulk spares :)
It's curious that Flawless Maneuver is the one they actually did reprint in a couple precons already. But not having this cycle of spells upshifted as chase cards is definitely the best thing about this set.
Buying singles Is indeed the way to go but the sheer joy of opening a pack hits different. 😩
Like scratching off a lottery ticket?
Lol. So true. Dopamine hits from gambling.
And a booster can have ANYTHING inside!!! It can be a Teysa, or Daretti...or even a Talrand!
Indeed, although the joy is slightly dampened by insane price
Print Proxies
Me with a printer scissor and glue: look how much they have to spend for a fraction of my power
love that suttle jab at the wizards live...the level of gaslighting that took place was next level
What do you mean? I'm out of the loop
For those who have not heard of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Jingzhou (literally Jing province) is a resource-rich, strategic and culturally significant province situated at the center of the country. It is a commonly held belief that whoever controls the province will end up controlling all of China. The three warring factions of Wei, Wu and Shu would take turns controlling it and is a site where many beloved characters eventually met their ends.
I wanted to draft this set so much but the price depresses me...
Do what I do. Grind door dash at the end of the day. By the time the 4th rolls around you should have a box or two
@@grassynaga9092literally slaving away to buy cardboard. I know we sacrifice for things we love but damn quit supporting sleezy companies.
@@grassynaga9092why would i do that when i can proxy a cube with similar cards
@@vincenzofromwiisports3993 true I just like busting packs lol
@@grassynaga9092same i love opening packs aswell
I would expect a 1/1 Rhystic Study to have Josh Lee Kwai in the artwork
Or a vedalken orrery
Nah, it should have Tomer Ab…Abra….Amb…uhh Tomer from MTGGoldfish on it.
(He hates that card with a passion.)
I just now realized with a $300 price tag per box you literally can buy your singles for cheaper (even with the more expensive ones)
Love that Avacyn keeps getting reprinted and still stays expensive, Love her so much.
I'm sad that there isn't a profile version of her :(
I'd love to scoop up a copy for my Myrkuhl deck but that probably won't happen 😂
If she somehow drops below $40, I'll likely get her for my Kaalia deck. I doubt that will happen, but I can dream!
@@AnimeFluxYT the double masters version is at 39$ now
I let other people buy her, and use my 60 cent control magic to use it anyway
Jeweled Lotus is for any 4 cost, 2 color commander on turn 1, too (provided it isn't double double pipped like UURR) because the land can be 1 color and then Jeweled Lotus pays for 3 of any other color, so can pay for a 1UUR commander
gotta love that because the set is so expensive it doesnt really do anything meaningful to most of the reprint prices... so cool.
That's what i was thinking.
Those $30 mythics will stay at $30, because it's a $400 display and they're mythics.
that is what these people who say buy singles do not really get
@@dizzlegrizzle1919
You still should buy singles because otherwise you spend 400 bucks on a some mythics worth $100 + some useless bulk
So fun. Praise the WotC.
You could spend $60 on a single Collector's booster and hope to get really lucky and pull one of the three cards that will trade for almost $60, or you could just spend $60 or less buying the actual card you wanted.
The beauty is that every card is 30 Cents when you proxy it
Haha right. Proxy guys are bad at magic. They think cuz they proxy their mana crypts and mox diamonds it makes them good. Wrong. Ill smoke ur 4000 proxydeck with my 22$ mono colored real deck lol. Experience over proxy
@@professionalhater3929 i proxy 10 cent cards. Come at me.
The villainy and dishonor of playing a deck blinged out with Type 1 nonsense at a casual table has nothing to do with whether you proxied it or not lol. If your deck is an appropriate power level for the field, proxies are good because they allow poor folks and rich folks to play the same game. If your deck is an _inappropriate_ power level for the field, the fact that you could afford to buy better cards than your friends is no absolution.
@@professionalhater3929 nah, i built 10 Decks for my friends and me to play at an even Powerlevel and to shuffle through. Idk why you are comin at me lmao
@@FarrelClement thats the problem. Everyone wants things for free or cheap. U might as well b able to buy cards with ur food stamps. Draw a picture n make ur own game if u wanna proxy. Ppl and their fake ass shit smh. Then u all boast bout how good ur deck is when in reality ur just a fake magic player. They have formats for expensive stuff. Go take ur proxy deck to a vintage tourn n see where that gets ya
Portal 1 most definitely was released it North America. It was my first set and I still have a bunch of cards from it (in rough shape now, I was 10 when it came out).
As was the second one, only the third wasn't.
I remember buying Cyclonic Rift for 1,50 and a friend of mine told me he didn't like that card cause it isn't good due to the bounce instead of full wipe.
I wish for that time again.
LOL I got in later at $8 a Cyclonic when EDH started up and told my LGS this card is only going to up... :p
In fairness to Cyclonic Rift's naysayers, color identity is the only reason it has any value at all. In every other constructed format it's been totally outclassed by better non-blue Boardwipes. But when you need a board wipe for your Simic value pile, it is effectively Cyc Rift or bust.
@@noesunyoutuber7680Also cyclonic rift is an instant, where most board wipes are sorceries, which gives it use even when you have access to other board wipes
It's pretty terrible in Modern, Pioneer, Legacy and Vintage and only really good in Commander and Oathbreaker.
Love the honesty from the Prof. in all his videos!
They should put the great hedge on the list for eldrain
Might not because they reprinted it in LOTR commander, but they'll probably do it anyways
@@Grooove_e wasnt it just a box topper? The Card is in none of the Commander Decks.
@@questionyourself718 yes. it was one of random 30 in 200$ boxes. so did not really affect the price.
@@questionyourself718 you can get it as a box topper or pull it from collector packs
Oh my sweet summer child
i really love and appreciate the production value and attention to detail in this vid. i haven't watched tolarian academy vids before but i i'll be checking out more now for sure. i especially appreciate the concise language, great recording quality, and the combination of sincere and professional voice work of the presenter. been watching a lot of mtg vids lately and they can be really off putting or feel like click bait or just 1000% cringe. thanks for not being cringe (not even a bit).
Such a cool set!!! I’m so frustrated it’s so expensive. It feels like wizards constantly gives us a glimpse of what could be and then screws us over.
The Great Henge was just reprinted in the LotR and the price didn’t change that much.😊
Really had to laugh when I saw the checklist at 13:15. Great video and great reprints!
i remember pulling doubling season from battlebond. good times. now it makes my hobbit commander deck so much fun
The Factor ad was the most relatable 2 mins of this whole video. Great work Prof!
Your videos have been so help full for me getting into magic and you hair is wonderful
Very glad you promoted your discord been looking for a way to play like that
Loved the green to do list! Great writing!
"Now last and certainly least-" man Prof went for the throat on Obecuring Haze lol. Good thing it prevents all damage from creatures.
You forgot to mention turn 1 Sen Triplets with Jeweled Lotus + Lotus petal + 1 untapped land.
Fair, fun magic : )
Yes but in magic fantasy land that's just oops land sol ring arcane signet Swords/path, and problem solved.
❤ the prices being included with every card, even combo linking cards.
I pulled a Craterhoof from a pack back when it was $40 and I was new to Magic. I had no idea how expensive it was until I was playing with a group and they asked me about it!
Nice idea!! There has to be some incentive to change their mind.
Nicely done.
Will Edgar Markov ever get his long-needed reprint? Probably not, but I can dream
Wizards said he was a mistake because how busted he is
@@miekamariehodson1731They stated “eminence” was the mistake, and even then they still released Sidar Jabari
So glad I waited to get Arachnogenesis for my Shelob deck. I can get a full art now too
The first two portal sets did see a North America release. It was the third Portal set (Portal 3 Kingdoms) only saw an English release in Indonesia/Australia
Its unfortunate on the price, my playgroup did drafts of commander legendes, both moddern horizons, and the other special sets by buying one or two boxes over the last few years. I dont think we will be doing one for this set though
When I first started playing Magic in 2014 one of the first singles I bought was Doubling Season for around $30. At the time I played casual kitchen table Jank with what I had, often in singleton format and couldn't justify more than the one copy. Since then I would estimate that 90% of my decks have had a token focus. I haven't settled on my bottom line but I would love to pickup another one or more if it gets reasonable.
(18:03) Correction: The first two Portal sets were certainly released in North America, but it was specifically Portal: Three Kingdoms that wasn't.
Prof content to begin my weekend 👏👏👏
Poor Obscuring Haze, I've won more games with this one sided Fog than I have with any other card in the Ikoria Free Commander spell cycle but it still remains very low and underrated.
Funny to think that if a new format got as popular as commander and commander went on the way side these ''Commander'' specific cards will drop HARD since they can only be useful in Commander ;p LOL
Seems like they just listen to what you say and kinda go along with it. You should tell them to print more lands that don't etb tapped! (shock, pain, tango, etc.)
so hype for arachneogenesis for my thromok falls on you deck
The capture of John Joe, my favourite card of course
I almost never see land tax lol.
"Down hard and fast" That is yet to be seen, plus the time for bounce back
Very glad to at least have a handful of decent reprints for this set, even if i think this set couldve been done better.
Keep rocking, Prof. And I wonder what The Instructor would have to say about this?
Would have liked a mana crypt but also I love seeing Portal cards. One of my commanders is a portals card, though Dong Zhou didn't see a reprint so I still like the simplified Chinese version I got of it.
I enjoy cracking packs and "playing the lotto" but NOT at that price of entry. Singles & proxies for me. I'd love to crack a pack or two but will probably be priced out of that too.
My first magic deck ever was one of those starter portal precons
thx for the informative, balanced video and for not just making a mainstream rant video about commander masters!
I'm looking forward to getting onto that discord, I just need to have a proper set-up 1st.😅😅
Personally I'm keeping a close eye on Doubling Season, Demonic Tutor, and Smothering Tithe's prices as singles. I'm also gonna pick up a couple of boosters, mostly just to see what I pull and whether I get anything I wanna build a deck around.
Thanks Professor!
As a brand new player learning everything about all the sets, the community, etc it is crazy
So happy all those reprints!!! Thank you for keeping a steady hand at tanking my collection on every set. So cool that my damnations were once worth around 60$ and now pretty much nothing!!
God forbid people are able to play the game, so sorry for your investments lol
I wouldn’t really call $15 nothing. It’s not god awful expensive but it’s definitely not nothing. I would love to see it hit $5.
with jewled lotus and a colored land you can cast any 4 mana 2 color commander aswell doesnt just need to be one color since your land can tap for blue and the lotus for black
7:00 "Sh'ell'ahb" 🤣 he cant be serious
About Jeweled Lotus, you forgot that is also casts every 4 cost dual color commander on turn one as well. 3 mana mono and dual colored, and 4 mana mono and dual color commanders love Jeweled Lotus the most.
I’m super happy the great henge and finale of devastation are getting reprints! Both are so going in my Godzilla deck!
I thought that only the third Portal set, Three Kingdoms, wasn’t released in the US. I know I bought Portal cards when I was starting.
did people forget about Walk the Aeons? sure it costs 1 more than Capture of Jingzhou, but it has the same effect, and get this, you can cast it multiple times as long as you have enough islands to sacrifice
It feels great to hear that the great hedge is coming back. I have to put it in my Yarok deck!
Yeah I just love how they're destroying MTG🤮
The first deck I ever bought was the Ur-Dragon precon. . . I'm still livid to this day I didn't pick up the Vampire and Atraxa ones.
I bought the swell the host precon at the start of 2023 for 80 bucks love the precon and also had no idea arachnogenesis was so pricey lol.
I have a jeweled lotus in my Niv-Mizzet deck. My younger brother pulled one from a booster and let me hold on to it.
Buying singles is obvi the way to go and I do it when deck building, but I will 100% be trading in all my valuable LoTR pulls to subsidize a set box of Commander masters at my legs 😭 it's just the fun of it and I would love to use it to potentially build up my commander deck supply
I’m definitely going to be waiting before I start buying any sealed product for this set, since I feel as if prices will, hopefully, fall after some time.
Please do more shuffle up and plays. Im addicted.
I normally love buying at least one box from every set that comes out, the more expensive masters sets, but I cant stomach the price increase on this one. Good luck and good pulls to anyone who does decide to buy one . Looking foreword to a good amount of these singles coming down in price though! I definitely want to build an Ur dragon deck.
wish you can compare some outer sleeve that available now, like which one is better between broccoli and dragonshield
I wasn't sure I'd like the channel until i heard you're voice dripping with sarcasm over jeweld Lotus. That alone is worth my sub. Ps. I do now enjoy the channel.
Jobby the Hong called, he said good choice in background music lol
Have you seen the banger downshifts prof? Pauper eating good!
I purchased portal cards in my local game store back in the day all 3 sets.. So much for not released in north America.
Great Henge just had a reprint in LotR, The Party Tree
Cant wait for The Greatest Henge in wilds of eldraine
YOU PUT THAT ADD IN THERE ON PURPOSE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
in the great words of Stephanie from Full House,
How Wude!!!!!!! lol :p
Just wanted to add that Sun Quan was reprinted in from the vault: legends. I own one :)
I never even realized that Ulamog was that expensive. I pulled a foil version out of pack when it got released. I'm afraid to even play it now, that's how much above my budget it is
Flawless Maneuver already had 1 reprint in Phyrixia: All Will Be One Commander set which is why it's cost reduction ($ wise) is not so great. Still a great card and sees play in a few of my own commander decks.
Love ya, Prof!
Which 80 Songs sound like this outro 21:19 please leave a few exampels ,thank you.
it reminds my of a 80s Sitcom
13:59 Jeweled Lotus is cool, but does it have a waist swivel?
If you know, you know.
Jeweled Lotus is even better than you stated. As long as you land generates colored mana, you can put in almost any 4-drop TWO color commander (double-pip ones like Jarad aside).
You legit help me save so much money. I hope I meet you one day at a con!
that analogy for summer time with children on break...that hit hard man x) but very true
I'm excited for the Loyal Retainers reprint. Never thought that would be on a reprint radar. Hopefully it drops further
Im gunna be picking up a few individual packs, maybe like 4 or 5 and not all at once
Portal and Portal Second Age were both printed in North America. It was only Portal Three Kingdoms that wasn't and had an infinitesimal print run leading to the outrageous prices.
I wish magic was bigger in Poland. I have never once seen anyone play it let alone a booster. This video solidifies why it's not going to lol
Thanks Prof. Can't wait for that next Shuffle Up & Play. Xanathar is the bees knees!
Always love hearing the Jobby music in a non-Jobby video.
Wild that Arachnogenesis edged out Demonic Tutor...
Portal and Portal second age were released in North America . Three Kingdoms was the only one of those three that was not.
