How to measure a deer cape video:
• HOW TO MEASURE a deer ...
McKenzie forms - narrow face, good for deer younger than 5.5, lots of options, eyes set well, good ear butt placement; always seem to have more loose flesh around jawline on midwest deer, Meder - best choice for midwest whitetail - broader face - thicker body deer, easy eye set, nose pad is smaller than other forms, need to really sink corner of lips in form since lip line is shorter , Matt Thompson - larger forms are great - good ear butts, wider nostrils, more reflective chin - deeper, best feature is facial structure with natural Roman Nose, eyes are more difficult to set (thicker foam sockets) - eyes tend to focus more forward - great foam quality, Mears - used their older forms - a little to thick all the way around - great for Midwest deer - strange on a SE whitetail, new forms look fantastic.... Buckeye mannikins - more old school forms.
How do you feel about the Second 2 Nature forms?
@HardKnocksTime I think they look heed but I’ve never mounted on one
Can you make an outline of these recommendations? I love that you are sharing this. I was having trouble organizing notes from your talk. Not enough experience to follow along easily. God bless and have a great day

Bak n the day... C alot wer buk likn his bak.... Very cool
Great video

Sculptors of forms, deer included, are generally tailored for the region they hail from. Ben Mears is a southern boy, thus what you've come to like with the fit for your deer. I may not be totally correct but from what I seen over 20 years ago, his forms were molded as a catch all or catered to a mid-west deer. Very nice informative video, it seems that you have gone the extra mile to educate your clients and portray their trophies as accurately as possible.
Thank you! His new forms are incredible. He has redesigned the head and his really big forms are great for the northern bucks I get. The vid I did on the 315 lb live weight buck was a Mears SSR26 and fit like a glove!
Hey brother thanks again for your time and content! love it!
Thanks man!
@@thecedarridgechronicles Question? what's your recipe for neutralizing a hide? is it 1 heaping tablespoon of Baking soda per gallon of water? Just making ;)
Yup that's it. I use 3 gallons per hide
Thanks for sharing. Truely love the vids and information. Not everyone in your business would share your God's gift of knowledge and skill for free. Learning a lot. Thank you.
Thanks for you content. I’m wondering if you have ever tried or have any profesional opinion about forms from Matuska Taxidermy.
I have never tried them but Matuska is a good company from what I’ve heard and I’m sure has some good forms.
Great looking mounts for sure..should try giving Noonekester mounts a look at his company makes all kinds of forms
Out of 50 deer I mount, 38 on 6900, maybe one on 4600, the other 10 or 11 between the 8400&9600. If I ever shoot a big one, it’ll be on joe Coombs 9500 wall ped. Fantastic form. Thanks for the video!
I'll have to check out the Coombs form. I just picked up 19 Mears forms from Mississippi. I love how they fit and look.
I’m not in love with their shoulder forms but really like their wall pads. I’ve used Mckenzie Ben Mear forms. I’ll have to try Ben’s forms. Thanks
The new ones that Ben sells in Mississippi are a lot better than the old ones he had. Great anatomy
I was just on his website. They do look nice! Thanks. Cheaper than Mckenzie and I’ll bet no aggravating surcharge!!
Thank you for the awesome videos. Have you ever tried the Ohio Taxidermy supply forms? I will be doing my first mount soon and ordered their sneak sweep form.Again I can’t thank you enough for the down to earth easy to understand videos 👍
I have not, I'll check them out!
My buck was done with ohio taxidermy. It looks better then the mount I had done with a Makenzie. I'm from NY and the taxidermist told me he uses Ohio mounts due to they are made more structured around the north Eastern deer structure. Don't quote me that's just what he told me but I think it looks better then the Makenzie myself personally.
Here in Maine that’s all I order now. The OTS line fit these deer up here perfect. I also have a sneak sweep going together now, excited to see the finished product.
Wish you would have talked matuska here. Blows away any mckenzie forms by far. But good video keep it up
Never used them before but I've heard good things about them
Brother would you mind doing a grooming video? That would be awesome!!
I’ll try to remember to do that 👍
@thecedarridgechronicles I'd be more then grateful of you brother.
Just ordered my first Ben Mears forms yesterday. They will be here today . I love the looks of them .
Let me know how you like the fit!
I will send it to you in messenger. We'll Hung Taxidermy. Is us
Well not We'll
Foster has nice deer forms I've used them for several years now easy to mount on
Take a look at the Joe Meder semi upright series I have mounted a few on these forms and really like them. Getting ready to mount my first Ohio taxidermy form it's the 400 series with the alpha nose. I'll let you know what I think.
I like OTS G2 and Matuska for Minnesota deer. HQ are nice to. Order 2 Ben Mears last year both had to big of a D measurement so couldn't use them.
It makes it a little tough sometimes since Mears don't provide a D measurement. I usually get a good fit by taking the D measurement on my cape and subtracting 2" and then ordering that number as the B measurement.
Hi Daniel, this is regarding the short on saving on tanning oil..wondering when you use it, don't recall it being used in the tanning video. Merry Christmas!
It is the brush on tan you apply after neutralizing the cape
Merry Christmas!
Waiting for a video on torn ears and how you get take the cartilage out of that part and put the ear liners in like in the 9900 deer in this video.
I 100% was going to record that on that particular deer and forgot 🙄 I'm going to record the next one though!
I’m still new at this form ordering. Have you ever ordered a form and it was to small between the topbrow. And the lip slot in the form about an inch or so short? Great job. How’s the fleshing machine working out?
I bet the whole head is too small. Probably need about a half inch longer eye to nose measurement
It’s awesome. I will never mount another one without it!
@@thecedarridgechronicles I measured 6-7/8 and ordered a 7 eye to nose. So maybe should have ordered 7-1/4 maybe? Thanks again
The form I used was the 6300S.
@Jay-ui5jk the 6300 in the same exact size should work perfect. The “s” has smaller head dimensions for deep south deer
Try 6500 series.
Hey Daniel how do you measure a deer to score him
I need to do a video on this. I'll try and get it done this week 👍
Thanks buddy I appreciate it I'm just getting into Taxidermy I've been watching your videos for a week and a half and you have some very good information you've helped me out a lot thanks
Thank you for awesome videos.
That’s some great work you do . My Pennsylvania taxidermist was so busy he’s was not excepting any more animals so I hoping the new taxidermist I’m using for the first time does a good job . 🤞🏻
All of the processors are filling up here. Seems like everyone is tired of paying these stupid food prices!
I’ve tried em all so far Matuska is my favorite forms
Always good content!
Thanks brother!
@@thecedarridgechronicles just got finished pinning some tear ducts shut.... 😂
Mears are great, but not enough different sizes. For smaller deer I like Research Manniken.
I haven't tried Research yet. Just heard about them several months ago and have heard good things about them.
@@thecedarridgechronicles , not bad but I'm liking the longer shoulder mount that includes some front leg no. They are priced well.
what type of hanger do you use on 9800 wall ped?
I use a McKenzie super lock hanger system
Ohio taxidermy supply!
2nd nature forms are really nice. Lots of muscle detail.
study reference...
