    I really admire you. It fascinates me that at Cambridge as a Lit student you have to read so many books and write essays on each week, whereas in my country, when you study English, professors almost apologize if they have to make us read one book a term, because students keep complaining that it is too much work. I love reading and learning about literature, and in hindsight I think I would really have thrived in a British university environment. It's just weird seeing how different courses are in different countries.

      That's interesting to hear! Tbf Cambridge is quite different to some Universities in the country, and the course structure can be very different somewhere else (quite similar at Oxford/Durham/UCL I think). I do love how much we get to read but the 8 week terms make it feel very rushed! Sometimes it's a blessing to spend a lot of time on one text and really learn about it in depth ☺️

      @lilydelacour 3 года назад +6

      Totally agree! At my university it’s the same. Most of the time we only have to read about 3 books per Seminar. Unless it’s a class by my favorite professor. She always puts about 10 books on the syllabus. 😅 Maybe it’s because our instructors think that we read slower since we are not native speaker. 🤔 But yeah I also hate when people complain about having to read 4 books and than decide not to read a single book. 🤦🏼‍♀️

    I love reading but it disappoints me that when I read a book I can't get into the depth of that work. I only get the main story line and the plot and nothing more. I can't leave any comments about the work let alone writing an essay 😔
    Any tips on how to solve this problem? Does reading more books help?
    I would really love to actually form opinions of my own and really enjoy the book that I am reading.

      When I studied Spanish Literature for my A Level Exam, I found that reading the book in English and Spanish helped me to start picking out the main themes of the texts. It's incredibly difficult to pick out the nuances of literature if you're still learning the language - I assume practise probably does help though!

    hey, I just discovered your channel today and finding it so interesting! :) I'm Amelia btw, I'm a sixth form student looking at applying to unis right now... just curious, what made you decide to apply to cambridge > oxford? were you set on going to oxbridge from the beginning or were there other unis you were really interested in? and like... is there anything you think a student should know before they decide to apply to oxbridge? like the kind of person the uni would be suited to/ not suited to etc? I'm very indecisive ahah :/ love your channel!

    • @GeorgieEllen10
      @GeorgieEllen10  3 года назад +1

      Hi Amelia! If you're trying to decide between Ox and Cam it's usually best to look at the difference in course first and see if there are any major differences that make you want to apply for one over the other. For English, the courses are very similar at a lot of unis (across the UK, not just Oxbridge) so it didn't really play into my decision too much, although there were some 3rd year modules I liked the look of at Cam and some I wasn't drawn to on the Ox course. There were a few other little things like, I could go to the open day at Cam but not Ox and my English teacher suggested I go for Cam afterwards, but I didn't spend too long on the decision, probably because I thought i had no chance of getting in! Ox and Cam are v different cities tho - if you are finding them similar I'd consider whether that matters to you because Ox is a lot bigger than Cam

    • @GeorgieEllen10
      @GeorgieEllen10  3 года назад +1

      No I definitely was not set on Oxbridge at all because a) there are loads of amazing Unis other than Oxbridge and b) I didn't think I'd get in. Also, I'd say that I don't think it's worth anyone being 'set' on Oxbridge because getting in is based on so many different parts of the application process, and how they are assessed can vary from college to college. I really wanted to go to UCL, their English course isn't that different from the Cambridge one, they have small group teaching, and it's London lol, but when I got an offer from Cambridge I wasn't exactly going to turn it down 😂 it worked out well in a lot of ways but I'd still like to study in London at some point!

    • @GeorgieEllen10
      @GeorgieEllen10  3 года назад +1

      For reference, I applied to Cam, UCL, Durham, KCL and York - courses were all pretty similar, all but KCL had small group teaching (but I loved the rest of the uni), everywhere had funding options, easy-ish to get to via public transport from my home. Funnily enough, one of the things I looked for was funded opportunities to study languages and abroad over the summer - lots of unis have partnerships with unis abroad so you only have to cover the cost for flights and food (and sometimes bursaries cover that) - but Cambridge is the only Uni out of those that doesn't have a specific program for that sort of thing 😂 (there is funding for travel but only on an individual basis and most likely not as much)

    • @GeorgieEllen10
      @GeorgieEllen10  3 года назад +1

      There are lots of different types of people at Cambridge, I don't really think there's one type of applicant 🤔 I'd just decide on a list of things you care about in a uni - my video on modern vs traditional unis might be helpful? - and pick a list of unis where you'd be happy to go to any of the options. If you end up going to Oxbridge, then brilliant! but if you end up going to a different uni, that'd also be brilliant! ☺️

    • @GeorgieEllen10
      @GeorgieEllen10  3 года назад +1

      One more thing! For practical help on applying to uni there's a playlist called How to Get into University on my channel which you might find useful!

    What made you choose Magdalene out of interest?

    • @GeorgieEllen10
      @GeorgieEllen10  3 года назад

      I actually got pooled to Magdalene! Not sure if you know how the pooling system works but basically some colleges are oversubscribed (usually the bigger colleges) so when a student applies to a college but there isn't enough room for the college to accept another person, that student then gets 'pooled' to another college. However, having studied at Magdalene for two years I'd say some good reasons why a student should study at Magdalene are the lovely support network of college staff, our candlelit formal hall and our amazing new library 🥰

      The application process for MPhil is different to undergraduate - I'm an undergraduate and I'm not a STEM student so I don't know much about it. If you're applying for MPhil you would be conducting your own research so I assume the project proposal is a title to the potential research project you'd like to carry out. On the Cambridge website, if you go through Biological Science (whether physiology, biochem or psychology) there are two links that say 'project' and 'research' if you haven't looked at those already - the research page has all of the current areas of study in the faculty so it might help you to choose a research topic. You also have to pick a potential supervisor when you apply to the course. I imagine if you email admissions, the faculty, or one of the supervisors they'd probably help and they'd definitely know more than me!

      For UK students it's up to £9,250 to study any degree at Undergraduate level at any University in the country, which most people pay for through a student loan from the government. It's more expensive for international students but I don't know how much exactly, and postgraduate courses are a different price too. Prices for accomodation range from £50 to £150 a week in college usually, but contracts are only 30 weeks a year if you only live there during term time. If you need to stay in college all year around for whatever reason it'll be more expensive ofc

      Lots of international students study English Literature or Linguistics at UK universities! They're usually separate courses I think but there might be some places you can take both subjects as a joint honours course?

      A good indicator of things I've studied at University are the videos I've done on books I've enjoyed or would recommend: one is called 10 books you should read for an English Literature degree, and there are two videos showing my top 10 favourite books from 1st and 2nd year. There is no set syllabus at Cambridge because you're encouraged to research whatever you enjoy across the set modules: in 1st and 2nd year we take 6 modules in Medieval, Renaissance, 18th century, Modern Literature, Shakespeare and one called 'practical criticism' where we learn about literary theory

    Why go to university to study this stuff? I know people are passionate about it but what is the added value?

    • @GeorgieEllen10
      @GeorgieEllen10  3 года назад +14

      The study of literature gives a broader understanding of social, political and philosophical constructs, language and linguistic structures, and the forms of speech and communication that society is built on. It helps us to understand the way that humans express themselves based on public and personal factors.
      Practically, English students are incredibly versatile and go into a broad range of careers from the Arts to Finance, Business to Law, as well as more stereotypical roles such as Journalism and Publishing. Any English degree teaches a person to read deeply and think critically about a range of sources and draw a conclusion, a skill which I'm sure you'll agree is important in all sorts of situations. The ability to write well and argue your opinion could never be limited to the study of a certain subject.
      I could go on, but I hope this answers your question 🙂

    • @carlitoab
      @carlitoab 3 года назад

      @@GeorgieEllen10 sorry but I just cannot see what use an English graduate is in a business or finance environment (environments I know well). Not saying there's not transferable skills somewhere but why would an organisation recruit an English graduate for a finance role when they could take graduates with far stronger skillets for such fields such as those with economics and mathematical backgrounds?

    • @GeorgieEllen10
      @GeorgieEllen10  3 года назад +7

      It probably depends on the role - plus they could've easily gotten experience in those things while at uni outside of their degree. Most degrees don't directly lead to a career anyways so you're really only getting it (employability wise) to say you have the skillset to get a degree and to build other skills around it. Might as well enjoy what you're studying
