in my opinion, these games are SO underrated. I love puzzles and dragons, I played the mobile version, so I had to get this. Im not disappointed with these games.
I find it odd so many people are reacting to this with just a "meh" response. I'm actually really looking forward to getting this game, since I'm tired of just seeing basic Candy Crush clones and whatnot. I was worried at first, but because Nintendo wasn't stupid and didn't incorporate free to play elements into the game, it looks like it turned out really well! The only flaw I really see is the whole music issue, but even then, I generally don't go I to puzzle genre games expecting good music. Besides, at least the Mario music will be great.
I'm pretty sure that transformed monsters don't lose their level. The level resets to 1 for their skill, not for their overall level, and that's only in the Mario version. Regardless, the stats of a transformed monster will be the same regardless of when you transform it. Though, transformed monsters do level up more slowly, so it's better to transform them later than earlier.
A fair warning the mario version is brutally difficult, starting at world 3 monsters will take over 5 minutes to beat and will do half your health in one hit, you will have to grind to beat it
Anyone who likes one version but isn't keen on the other, think of it like this. In some countries, the UK for example, the game would have been the same price even if it was just one of them, which essentially makes one of the 2 games free. Who doesn't want a free game? Even if they're not fond of it, plus if you get bored you could give it a go and find you like it.
Retro Turtle there is one and that's Tamadra. Tamadra appears at the awakening station in the toad house. you can't use him in battle but he's still there
Reasonable review and given the pros and cons stated, the final score *makes sense*. Good job overall and I will be getting the physical copy of this game as soon as possible. :)
Had this game for a week now and am over halfway through both versions of the game. I'm not even that much of a puzzle fan and this took me by surprise, it's really fun and addicting. Bare in mind some parts of the game you have to grind a bit to keep up, at least until you get the Boo Bros in the Mario game who are mega OP and undermine every other Leader/ Helper in the game. This game is totally worth it, and if you're on the fence you should pick it up (was only £20 on Amazon for me). It's fun and rewarding and pulling off combos feels so good. And I've not played any other game, like Monster Hunter that I was playing religiously before, since buying this.
Oh wow... At first it looked like a typical another candy crush-like clone and I expected a "meh" but it's nice to see it's actually got substance to it!
For everyone asking if they saw this video earlier you did. This went up last night but Derrick or Andre posted a tweet saying it was supposed to go up 12 hours later from when it went up the first time.
would you believe i knew about puzzles and dragons long before i knew this ds double pack was coming out? last year i found a free puzzle game called puzzles and dragons on my Ipad (tablet) and got hooked on it's unique match 3 style. each of these ds versions add to the version i played, but seem like they will feel similar to play. in the tablet version, there was no "overworld" hub in either form as they seem to appear in this ds version. it was pick a dungeon, play through, use "trash" monsters as material to lvl up, duplicate monsters used as material could power up skills as well (and a select few special material class monsters), once a monster reaches max lvl, you can evolve it by using a specific combination of material monsters which will reset lvl, but as you said, will have better stats overall when it catches up in lvls. same elements and puzzle style, and i dont know how obtaining monsters works in the ds version, but im expecting a similar method to the tablet version. (im still planning to get the game. dont take it as im not wanting it because ive played simmilar)
That's odd. Although the exp level resets in the mobile version, I find that you keep levels in both Z and Mario versions when you evolve / transform. Only Skill level resets, since they learn new skills. (Also, there are more playable characters usable in the Leader slots on Mario ver., Score Attack spoiled that for me. :P)
Oh! I should mention that stronger forms of monsters take more exp to level up than their lower forms. If you're looking to level up quickly, stay low and then evolve once you're ready to take on that big burst of power.
I enjoyed the demo. Playing the hard mode really showed me how these battles can get real strategic and complicated. Love the puzzle/rpg elements. Definite buy for me.
I have a NEW 3DS XL and a legit physical copy of this game and having been playing it for a long time. I have updated it various times, when told there is an update available. All of a sudden, this game no longer starts up anymore(like the game is "bricked") and receive an "error". Is there anyway I could delete JUST the updates and not my saved game from the MicroSD card? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know how likely this could be done, but I really want to see some of the street pass and multiplayer functions. I really wanna know what 1-2 players is, and how it affects the game. Specially since my house might get two copies if my sister is persuaded.
Is it bad that I got the game sine I wanted it, but feel bad now and am worried if I made a mistake? I can't stop playing though, as I love dragon games, and like that there is one with much less dead dragons.
Great review, as always, Derrick. I`m in the last dungeon in Z and World 4 in the Mario Version. So far, I think the original is better, mainly because of the more creative monster design and how it handles the skills. I would recommend it to all of those, who are still unconvinced. :) By the way, how can I get the eggs of monsters like Naga and Mermaid? I killed so many of them, but they did not drop a single egg. :(
This is a really good review, it has showed me that it is much more than a jewel swap game and the ability to capture various enemies is excellent. Although I am wondering how you get good guys in the Mario edition such as Toad and Rosalina, I'm sure it will be explained once I get it. However you didn't mention how obtaining new enemies works (or I missed it), Is it like Pokemon where you have to throw an item or is it automatic. And if its automatic, do you get everything you fight or just predetermined ones, or maybe its luck based? And what about the bosses? Can you get them to join your team?
I wonder if I should get this or not because I've been playing PAD (JPN iOS version) for almost three years now so I'm pretty much used to the mechanics. The only 2 things I'm curious about is... 1. Is there color blind assist because the bright colors really burn my eyes and causes tears. 2. They have collabs just like the mobile version right? I really want something as badass as the Final Fantasy collab.
Well good thing I'm gonna get this game. I've been wanting a new game to play on the bus since I finished all my other 3DS games. And it just so happens that I love puzzle games, so that's great :0
I downloaded the demo. It is pretty fun, especially with the New Super Mario Bros. flavor all over. The Z version, I don't care for as much due to the traditional RPG elements, but the Mario version is cool.
Martyn Ryan great! this is one of the few of these puzzle games I would call worth the money! (and not simply because it has mario) The cool use of the top screen which adds so much more character to it is really great, and the cool and refreshing way the game works sets it apart from other less imaginative puzzle games. Definitely worth a look if you like puzzlers!
I´m not a big fan of Puzzle games, but this game looks pretty good, Is like Dragon Coins for the Ipod, only on this time is without coins. May I buy it instead of Attack on Titan (sorry if I have wrong grammar)
Wow. Green Kamek. Cool I guess? I don't see a point to it but cool. Also I'm buying the Mario one, not for the puzzle aspect, but for the sole purpose of merging enemies. I want a Goomba Koopa combo. I want a blooper busy beetle combo. I want it all.
So I played the demo and I didn't find it particularly appealing, partially because I'm not good at puzzle games (I found myself just sliding a piece all across the board and only placing it where I wanted when the time limit approached in the hope of accidentally getting combo's. I'm not good at deliberate setups). Now, I have played demo's of games where the demo does not represent very well what the appeal of a game is, so here's my question: To anyone who has played the demo and the full version, if I didn't really care for the demo, might I still care for the full game anyway? I will say I do typically enjoy RPG games, and this does look like something that might have potential, so I don't really know.
Honestly, the demo was pretty terrible as it showed a small portion of the game's main formula. If you're still interested, hut don't know if you should buy you, check out the free mobile game to see if the base formula is up your alley. P&D is free, but keep in mind micro transactions.
I say play the mobile game on you phone. It got me into puzzles and dragons. I've berm playing pokemon shuffle for a minute along with trozei so I like the match three puzzle games. But, yeah the demo was awful, no wonder it was unlimited in playtime.
still bizzy with this game its seriously great but also its in the later levels hard!!! on top of it, if you finish the normal game then you go even through a special world 6 world extra in z, and 8 in its super mario version
I played a Pacman puzzle/RPG game like this on my phone. It kinda sucked--but only because it had as much depth to it as you'd expect a mobile game to have. The concept itself _(which was probably ripped right off the Puzzle and Dragon's concept)_ was entertaining enough to occupy me for a while despite the lack in design.
Eh, I don't really see the 30$ value in the game - Battle Camp is a similar app on the app store which is completely free (there's a ton of in app purchases though). In my opinion it's a better game (and it's free).
And hearing people explaining this game is funny This is a game you don't need tutorials, you need techniques You better off play it yourselves than listening to some guy explaining it

MrBarelylethal Not necessarily... Mobile did overused it and dumbed it out, but these types of games have been around for much, much longer than smartphones, like Columns, Tetris Attack/Pokemon puzzle league or Puyo-Puyo, and they are all great games. This one in comparison has much more freedom in movement than any of those, just looks like a fair upgrade from the classic formula, with a plus of RPG elements to it
in my opinion, these games are SO underrated. I love puzzles and dragons, I played the mobile version, so I had to get this. Im not disappointed with these games.
I find it odd so many people are reacting to this with just a "meh" response. 4:50
Their exp level isn't reduced to 1, their skill level is reduced to 1
This is a major difference that i couldn't help but notice
Still a better Mario RPG than Paper Mario Sticker Star...
I was about to punch you in the face, but then I saw sticker star.
Actually, I want to punch them anyway.
Nope
Damn..that’s a really scary threat O_O
I liked both games
This version needs a port since the Puzzle and Dragons that received a Switch port is based on the 2012 mobile version.
This review has interested me in the game. Thanks GameXPlain
SmashMarioPro2000 (OLD) I'm also here to make you interested. THIS IS ONE OF MY FAV 3DS GAMES
I'm pretty sure that transformed monsters don't lose their level. The level resets to 1 for their skill, not for their overall level, and that's only in the Mario version. Adrian2040 yes, there skill level goes to level one, not there actually level. Also I like your icon
There is a way to get only the Mario version?
The RPG elements didn't conviced me much... :/
***** Download only, most likely.
***** Both Mario and Z have the RPG elements. It's pretty much just a palette swap.
A fair warning the mario version is brutally difficult, starting at world 3 monsters will take over 5 minutes to beat and will do half your health in one hit, you will have to grind to beat it
madratthemighty an rpg with grinding i never heard of that before i thought you grind in a racing game
***** lol, both versions include the rpg elements XD, what were you expecting?
Anyone who likes one version but isn't keen on the other, think of it like this.
In some countries, the UK for example, the game would have been the same price even if it was just one of them, which essentially makes one of the 2 games free.
Who doesn't want a free game? Even if they're not fond of it, plus if you get bored you could give it a go and find you like it.
Wait... there are no dragons in the Mario universe! 0/10 "Lacking dragons" -IGN
Retro Turtle there is one and that's Tamadra. Tamadra appears at the awakening station in the toad house. you can't use him in battle but he's still there
YES! It's a good game! I've been interested in this game since it was first announced, and I'll get it next week!
Dan's Nintendo Channel! I WILL GO ON ANY VIDEO ARE YOUR HEAR? WHY WERE HOW?!
Galactic Giratina yes
Reasonable review and given the pros and cons stated, the final score *makes sense*.
Good job overall and I will be getting the physical copy of this game as soon as possible. :)

i think i've seen a few errors in this video, but this one stuck out to me: the timer doesn't start when you touch an orb, but move it.
For everyone asking if they saw this video earlier you did. This went up last night but Derrick or Andre posted a tweet saying it was supposed to go up 12 hours later from when it went up the first time.

Man it's crazy they finally added it to the Nintendo switch i remember the 3ds commercial 🤣😵
I'm actually really interested now!
At first, I thought this game was gonna flop so hard; but now that I've heard this, I really want to get it!
I'm glad Puzzle and Dragons Z finally made it to America! It's a good series, and I have a feeling I'll enjoy it even more on 3DS!
+pgadala replied to the wrong person, sorry.
Thanks for the review, Derrick. This has solidified my interest in the game after greatly enjoying the demo.
I can't wait to play it. I'm glad I went to GameStop and pre-ordered.
*****
Wasn't that game released a week ago? I already played it for a lot of hours :3 Or will it be released later in the US?
That's the demo version.
***** No I don't talk about the demo. The full game was released on may 8th here in europe.
The game will be released in the US on May 22. That's when I can pick up my copy.
***** Went to Bestbuy and have a different code for it.
I enjoyed the demo. Playing the hard mode really showed me how these battles can get real strategic and complicated. Love the puzzle/rpg elements. Definite buy for me.
Puzzles and Dragons Super Mario Bros Edition Does have it's own remixes and in later courses
nice
I love the enemy raising and evolving part of the Mario side, it really makes me want a Pokemon/Dragon Quest Monsters clone with them all in
Dragon quest Monsters joker exist
So was this video re-uploaded just to add the bar with Derrick's name at the beginning?
I DO remember that being absent in the original upload.
Don't know but you can actually add or change words in a title at any time for any video in the creator studio.
I didn't think this would get such a good review! I actually kind of want this now!
I have a NEW 3DS XL and a legit physical copy of this game and having been playing it for a long time. I have updated it various times, when told there is an update available. I much prefer a game called "Huniepop". Its much more *_rewarding_*.
Is it bad that I got the game sine I wanted it, but feel bad now and am worried if I made a mistake?
I can't stop playing though, as I love dragon games, and like that there is one with much less dead dragons.
5:20 gaijin Goombah? Is that you?
When does this game come out in North America?
Great review, as always, Derrick.

You receive eggs which you hatch in the hub
'I found myself getting attached to particular characters; especially a Goomba'.
Words I never thought I would hear.
Raikaria1 me neither

No and no. Hope this helps
Speaking of massive combo on 1:15
oh yes! whata wonderful review! i will be buying this on the eshop right now!

Sounds like a good game. I want to know if I can start off with Luigi. Are both M & L available at the start or do i need to unlock L?
Cas Crow the first level I think is with Mario but Luigi comes quickly
Was going to disregard this initially but I'm quite intrigued now
Nice review! This game seems better than I expected, I'll have to pick it up with CodeName STEAM this weekend.
4:40 oh, so like how class changes work in Fire Emblem? That got me hyped :P PS: FINISH AWAKENING
This'll be a new experience for me, but I'm definitely interested. I'll be sure to pick this one up.
Are you able to buy just the Mario version off the eshop instead of having to buy both
No but don't worry about it, the Z version is essentially free since the game would be the same price anyway without it.
People keep hating this, but wait until you hear World 7's soundtrack. Fucking epic.
My mum got me this game today :D
Martyn Ryan great! this is one of the few of these puzzle games I would call worth the money!

Drvipervideos how cruel
I'm having a fun time! Hope you enjoy it as well. :)
I'm having a fun time! Hope you enjoy it as well. :)
JCmasters100 Don't be so condescending!
Please, don't compare bejeweled to crappy crush.
Getting this mainly for Z. owo
Yuuki_Tsumugi That's why I'm getting it, the Mario edition is just an added bonus.
Yeah, I'm getting it for Z, but I hate how they are making P&D Mario Bros. edition the "big thing", even though P&D Z is the actual game.
P&D Z is honestly better then the Mario Bros. edition
Not that the Mario edition is bad or anything, but, and I know it's actually new, but...still...Z is still new over here. xD
Joeynator3000 I did the same
I think I am getting this game next week.
I´m not a big fan of Puzzle games, but this game looks pretty good, Is like Dragon Coins for the Ipod, only on this time is without coins. May I buy it instead of Attack on Titan (sorry if I have wrong grammar)
what's derrick's personal channel?
wazzuper11 This is it. All I use it for is uploading the Sunday Night Stream recordings though.
I wonder what derrik looks like
CJ Frank Just find one of Gamexplains E3 video's
And again Nintendo decided to recycle old Mario pieces from NSMBW
I'm sold. I'm pre-ordering this game right now.
The doctor who free mobile game does the shifting mechanic and the team system.
2 Games in one? SWEET!
Thanks for the review Derrick,I may actually pick this up.
Wow. Green Kamek. Cool I guess? I don't see a point to it but cool. Also I'm buying the Mario one, not for the puzzle aspect, but for the sole purpose of merging enemies. I want a Goomba Koopa combo. I want a blooper busy beetle combo. I want it all.
Quick question what is a 'Liked-A-Lot' mean on his reviews? A 7/10 or a 8/10?? I'm new here..cause I am thinking of buying this game.
I always say if you are interested in a game then buy it no matter what others say as we all have different tastes.
sandra gonzalez well you should bye it
So I played the demo and I didn't find it particularly appealing, partially because I'm not good at puzzle games (I found myself just sliding a piece all across the board and only placing it where I wanted when the time limit approached in the hope of accidentally getting combo's. I'm not good at deliberate setups). Now, I have played demo's of games where the demo does not represent very well what the appeal of a game is, so here's my question:
To anyone who has played the demo and the full version, if I didn't really care for the demo, might I still care for the full game anyway?
Can you tell me your friend code for the Nintendo 3ds?
still bizzy with this game its seriously great but also its in the later levels hard!!! on top of it, if you finish the normal game then you go even through a special world 6 world extra in z, and 8 in its super mario version
for some reason, I have dark orbs on my board even tho I have no dark monsters in my team. Why?
+Kabegami The Great dark assist character
um I'm kind of dissapointed at this comment because the guy did state what orbs would be in the world even If you don't have that kind of monster
Gaming Kun 114 disappointed? Such a weird thing to say.
Dad, is that you?
Kabegami The Great your probably early on in the game at the time where there is no drak orbs
Still waiting for mario colab for the original puzzle and dragons.
Basically it's a more in-depth, Pokemon Battle Trozei.
But is it worth the price?
I feel like this is gonna be released on iphone
I played a Pacman puzzle/RPG game like this on my phone. It kinda sucked--but only because it had as much depth to it as you'd expect a mobile game to have. The concept itself _(which was probably ripped right off the Puzzle and Dragon's concept)_ was entertaining enough to occupy me for a while despite the lack in design.
Going to the store wich game sould i buy
KHfan890 this one
Eh, I don't really see the 30$ value in the game - Battle Camp is a similar app on the app store which is completely free (there's a ton of in app purchases though). In my opinion it's a better game (and it's free).
Theres also a free version of puzzle and dragons that has exisited for 3 years now...
In European versions, when you evolved a monster, his level isn't resetting
I love this game so much!
Lol I can already see them selling these two separately on the eshop later on to give "cheap" option.
I wish I had this game, seems like a good way to have fun and waste some time
Every one is just getting it for the mario part :P
Good review, Derrick!
"Goomba who was incredibly powerful"
Wow, man, I think that's a bit of an exaggeration....
This game makes me think of Starcraft my favorite game that makes you think.
It's still a match three game, if I want one of them there's millions on the Play Store for free, I'll keep my money for Witcher 3
Wii U still has no Mario RPG of its own yet
It does actually. Who doesn't want Paper Mario in glorious HD
But they still want a console Paper Mario done right after the atrocity known as Sticker Star
I'm talking about in general people want a true to form Paper Mario
Sooner is better than later
***** Why are you getting mad that people want a wii u paper mario? Do you only own a 3ds?
want this so badly yo!
they mention pokemon but never talk or mention it ever again in their channel only when a game is announced
Is this game as bad as everybody say it is? Giant Bomb Quick Look make it seen as the game is very fun.
Instead of Mario, it could have been Panel de Pon :(
Sounds like a legit game to kill some time. :) When does this come out again?
I think Friday.
Well I'm more into puzzle 3 matches than RPGs so I guess I'll get the Mario edition then
i tried the puzzles in the demo and i didn't like that type of puzzle game, if it were a different puzzle, i would be all over this
I wish this was a modile game instead
How do I play on my 3ds xl
I'm so used to using my phone
At least there aren't any micro transactions
Also in this game if you can't do combos higher than 6 every spin
Don't buy this game you can't beat it if you do one combo at a time
And apparently people just assume this is a thing like HuniePop
With more plot and less "plot"
And hearing people explaining this game is funny
This is a game you don't need tutorials, you need techniques
You better off play it yourselves than listening to some guy explaining it
- ̗̀逸寧 ̖́- Puzzle & Dragons Z is actually a Spin-off to Puzzle & Dragons, which is a free Mobile game.
And finally
This isn't like pokemon mixed with HuniePop at all
You don't build an all around team
You build a one type only team
Bottom line:
Get the game if you have played p&d (or other ripoffs (tower of saviours I'm looking at you)) and you can actually get 6+ combos usually
Otherwise don't get this game you're wasting your money
Get the demo tho
Meh. I'll stick with the P&D original on mobile. Played that for at least 1.5 years now.
is this game worth buying ? anyone played
+HAI kk If you have a smartphone, you can download the puzzle and dragons mobile game for free to see if you'll like this style of game or not.
Thanks. Bought it, Awesome game
+HAI kk it is because it has no microtransactions
free puzzle games are shit because you need to refill your energy
HAI kk yes it is worth it
Where's the Pokemon version
Ezra Judd Pokemon Trozei lol
Ohhhhhh luck, now I feel less bad about myself
This game is awesome
I loved this game and hope anyone else who stumple upon this pls tury it out
Why am I constantly thinking Dragonball Z whenever I see the title...?
ThatOnePipsqueak I don't know, but my Internet thinks I like dragon ball Z because I look up puzzles and dragons Z.
Meh... Review doesn't help to convince me to buy it
Leonard Productions Moon Monkey It's just the Super Mario version, but it gets the point across.
Leonard Productions Glorified mobile trash.
MrBarelylethal Not necessarily... Mobile did overused it and dumbed it out, but these types of games have been around for much, much longer than smartphones, like Columns, Tetris Attack/Pokemon puzzle league or Puyo-Puyo, and they are all great games. This one in comparison has much more freedom in movement than any of those, just looks like a fair upgrade from the classic formula, with a plus of RPG elements to it
Moon Monkey It's a review not an advertisement.
Moon Monkey well... then don't,, is not that gamexplain is looking to sell it XD
eh still not getting this one.
Same. Seems too expensive for a puzzle game.
Trevor Rauch 2 games in one for a console..I think the price is fair
Jords2good Mmm yeah... I agree. I'm just gonna skip this game. Doesn't feel that interesting for me.
I am, in fact I already brought it. Just gotta wait for the update to actually play it.
Jords2good you should get it
