    I haven't built a kit using raw shells but have refurbished a good handful of random used drums. First drum kit configuration I put together was a 3 piece cocktail drum set. Didn't like the set up, so I turned it into a 4 piece mini nesting kit. The converted 16x15 floor tom to bass drum now houses a 12x9 mini floor tom, 8x5 mini rack tom and a 10x6 popcorn snare. 3 in 1. The 12x9 tom houses the 8x5 tom inside. Good prototype for a easily transportable drum set. Your kit looks and sounds great! Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Mike...I took cheap Yamaha Rydeen mahogany bass drum and cut it in half...stripped the shell, cut missing one BE by hand because I don' t have any machine (long and painful process), sanded, hand lacquered, assembled it with lugs that were on a kick and I got pancake bass drum 22x8"...kind of a kick that has big punch...funny thing is that I bring all kind of different kicks I have on a gigs but the band members always ask for pancake bass 😁 and I'm talking about two completely different bands! Anyway it's easy for me to take it all around cause it's very light...I have bass pedal with plate and that gives that tiny kick added stability...I don't care about tuning range, I use same tuning (fingertight on both heads) , I change sound using different heads and muffling

    Thanks for doing this video. I've been curious about Nordic Shells.

    • @Nivej8180
      @Nivej8180 2 года назад +1

      So you ordered the 6 ply? I've been debating the 6 vs 8 ply for the tom mounting reason. I definitely want the tom on the bass drum and I don't want to stress the shell if it can't handle it.

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  2 года назад +1

      I used a thinner ply shell, because 1) It matched the rest of my drums closer, and 2) It was cheaper. I think it's holding up fine for the supporting the tom, and it is certainly light weight for traveling. If I did the whole project over, I may go for a thicker shell just to be safe, but I don't feel much flex in the shell even, before I built it out.

    I've really been enjoying your channel for about the past week or so! Did I miss a video along the line where you changed out the toms to wooden hoops? I was wondering if you got those through Drum factory direct as well and if so, which ones were they? Keep up the great work!

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  Год назад +1

      Appreciate you checking out the videos. I didn't record any sort of update to the toms, but I bought those hoops a long time ago for a different kit, and they were custom made by Jody Lutz at Stellar Hoops. They are hard to find at normal suppliers, so custom made was the route for me. It makes the toms lighter to carry around, and I enjoy the dryer sound from the drums with the wood hoops.

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  Год назад +1

      I did double 45 degree cuts. I don’t think I’m personally experienced enough in cutting edges to really be a teacher of what to do and use, but I think a double 45 is a sharper tone, and the round over is a warmer sound.

    How would you compare Nordic to Keller?

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  Год назад

      No real difference, it’s not like I can hear the difference in manufacturer on a drum shell once you finish it, add hardware, cut bearing edges, add heads, etc. too many factors at play.

    • @ShawnxEdge
      @ShawnxEdge Год назад

      @@malonedrum they’re about the same price as Keller shells now. 16x24 8 ply maple bass drum shell is 218.00 (Nordic) 220.00 (Keller). I think I’d rather have a Keller shell. Nordic has a better selection for multi species shells though. I’ve owned so many custom kits made of Keller, Gretsch USA made kits are also Keller after the switch from jasper.
