Thanks for the video! I just did this repair yesterday and it took less than an hour thanks to the instruction. One thing I did slightly different was use a dremel with a cutting disk to make a slot in the shear screw and then used an offset screwdriver to unscrew it - it worked slick. After the repair I took the old unit apart and the circuit board was partially burned coming from where the battery contacts were. Also, count the number of rivets you need to put that wheel well cover back, I was 1 short. I ordered the alarm siren, shear screw and rivets from FCP, fast shipping even during the holidays!
The reason why these fail is because there's an NiMH battery inside the siren that stops holding a charge, thus prompting the "Alarm System Service Required" message in the instrument cluster. If the message is neglected, the battery in the siren leaks all over the circuit board, which can cause other problems like stopping the sunroof from working. You can also test the siren by locking the doors, waiting 20-30 seconds for the alarm to arm and then pulling up on the door lock pin. You should hear a high-pitched wailing. The panic button on the key fob does not trigger the siren, just the car's horn and the hazards. My XC70 got the "Alarm System Service Required" message in the dash. When I tested the siren, the hazard lights flashed, but there was no sound. Instead of buying a new siren module, I went to a salvage yard and took a module off of an S80. Then I bought a new battery off eBay, cut open the module, replaced the leaking battery (thankfully the board was unscathed, if the board is fried by battery acid, this won't work), then sealed it with hot glue and electrical tape. I didn't have to take the wheel off because of the XC70's raised ride height. That stupid message is gone and the siren works.
Great demo as usual. The retaining bolt was a pain to remove. In the end I used a pair of channel lock pliers to get enough grip to get it to turn. Job took about 60 mins. Hope to get another year out of my 16 year old s60 thanks to FCP with this and other useful vids. Thanks again
I use Vise Grips on the security bolt removal, has worked every time without fail! I also throw away new security bolt and replace them with a washer head bolt out of my box. ***No reprogramming required and no need to disconnect battery
Why the security bolt? If your siren goes bad, from say the battery leaking, does a replacement need programmed to the car? Also, do you sell the siren battery? Thank you for all the Volvo videos. 2004 XC70.
Excellent video presentation, also saw the one you did for the headlight bulb replacement, “Q” what size drill bit did you use for drilling out the rivets? Cheers!
Jay, thanks for the video. My siren module stopped working almost a year ago so I took it out tmporarily so my sunroof will work. Now, I in the process of replacing the siren module. I didn't keep the shear bolt so I couldn't chk its size. I don't need to replace it with a shear head. I was just gonna get a bolt from the HW store. Are you able to tell me the size/type? M6x20 maybe? Thanks.
Hi I am a bit confused because the panic button on remote does the job so the car as well, but not when i lock the car and try to open it by hand(where i understand the alarm should kick in). I have no error messages on dashbord. What shall i check or is the same problem as yours? Thanks, Volvo xc90 2005
This was great. Just did this over the weekend on my 05 s60. Liquid wrench and the punch worked like a charm. Got an el cheap o Rivet gun at Lowes and it worked like a charm. Now my sunroof works again yay 😀
I took the siren apart on my volvo v50 2009. Inside was still perfect and the battery still gave a good volt reading. Does this point to a different problem on my volvo.
Jay, I have the exact 2004 S60 AWD Volvo. I love it. This past week, my battery died twice and today, I got the Alarm maintenance required message. Checked the number 38 fuse, looks fine. Questions, what’s the correlation between battery and a bad alarm siren? How does it drain the battery? Is there any test to confirm it’s a bad alarm siren? All I have is the message saying “Alarm maintenance required. And can I replace it through the removal of the headlamp, specifically for this model, 2004 S60? The rivet removal is too much for me to do. Thanks in advance.
That's going to depend on the model of volvo and the attachment point, if you contact our servie team (service@fcpeuro.com) the team would be happy to help!
It's usually because of the internal backup battery that resides inside of the alarm siren assembly which starts to leak acid over time and pours directly on top of the circuit board.
george yannelis I'm guessing it's so that a thief wouldn't have an easy time removing and disarming the alarm. I'd rather have the removable bolt though like you said.
It's an excellent on idea and I did exactly that. These cars are older now and no one is going to steal them. On top of that the thief would have to know where this siren module is located so as to remove it first and then steal the car.
If you dont fancy cutting the security bolt, heres a small trick (note that you can always remove the siren through the front headlight hole as well, on the S60, V70, XC70 and S80 but not on the XC90) m.ruclips.net/video/Wt1kp5HPgWc/видео.html

Hello all s40 owners, I have 09 s40. I'm looking for the door lock/unlock wires to install a remote entry system. I found them to be black/red and black/yellow on the web. However, I cannot pinpoint their location. It said they are @DDM driver for module but I need their exact location on the fuse box to connect. Let me know if you know exactly where they are located. Was that module interfering with any other modules?

Jake B .......good info. Would the exterior lights stop working too?
Mine just stopped working yesterday.

will disconnecting siren module re-enable sunroof?
You can access this also by the removing the passenger head lamp. I did it on my 01 xc70. It’s much easier.
This sounds a hell of a lot more reasonable. I'm going to try it.
But how the hell you removed that siren via head lamp place, when that stupid screw is behind siren in that case... ?
You remove just the plastic siren, not the whole metal bracket. Just slack top and lower 10mm bolts with a wrech. This doesnt work on the Xc90 though
I’m definitely not using a sheer bolt to replace mine. Thinking of the next guy lol.

I'll answer my own question. Yes it is an M6x10 but I replaced with with an M6x20 Allen button head. I'm sure you can use any head.
@@ggtaruc2578 which model car was it?
Hi, does it require any programming after installing the new siren alarm module unit?
no
Probably worth checking if it works before torqueing the screw head off

Works out of the box
Hi all
Does the siren need coding or programming whatso ever?
Hi Enver, because it is just the siren, it should not need programming.

Curious, what’s the reason that they fail? I’ve replaced the one on my 2001 s60 but my 2008 s60 has yet to fail.
It's usually because of the internal backup battery that resides inside of the alarm siren assembly which starts to leak acid over time and pours directly on top of the circuit board.
why wouldn't you replace that bolt with a regular bolt in case you ever had to chase it again?
george yannelis I'm guessing it's so that a thief wouldn't have an easy time removing and disarming the alarm. I'd rather have the removable bolt though like you said.
Is it going to grow legs and run off so that he has to chase it.
Hi if i replace this module my sunroof it will work?
Y check fuses, and the sunroof and the sunroof does not work or emit noise
worked for me
will just unplugging the module disable the alarm and allow me to crank the vehicle?
Nik Naks. The modules are interdependent. Other vehicle systems wouldnt work. Sunroof for example maybe others
Why you want to wank the car.
Instead of installing the new shear-head bolt, why not sub it with a bolt you can easily remove the next time?
I think it’s to prevent a thief from easily disabling the alarm.
It's an excellent on idea and I did exactly that. These cars are older now and no one is going to steal them. On top of that the thief would have to know where this siren module is located so as to remove it first and then steal the car.
Wonder why they didn't show getting the plug out. 😒
Can you just disconnect it until you get a replacement?
Sure you can, Kenny! You just won't be scaring any robbers away with the alarm siren not working!
@@fcpeuro thanks I removed the fuse last night until I can get a replacement siren.
