I have vinyl shakes and the peckers apparently love the sound it makes when they are looking for a mate. It's not always the case that they are looking for insects, sometimes in Spring they are just showing off to prospective mates by "sounding", and they are doing it under an eave where it has a nice echo to it. So, I have put out a suet feeder and a birdhouse away from the house. Hopefully that will address two of the reasons they could be making the holes.

Like there's not enough problems in the world, you have to deal with pecker problems.
It must be the season because my friend felt with one last week at his cabin. They seem to like the cedar trim. He repeatedly asked the pecker to leave but he wouldn't. Then one day he flew right towards my friend, armed with his razor sharp beak. No more problems now. Apparently he's a good shot.
