Any ideas on the same problem but with a cedar house?? We have downy and hairy woodpeckers putting holes in our house, then we get starlings living in the hole. Of course, it is three stories up so it isn't the easiest to fix. We had six boards removed 2 years ago and here it is starting again. The neighbors have the same problem and they want to use the lead metal approach which I mentioned another bird will take its place when he removes the one now. I hate to see birds destroyed because they are doing what they do. By the way, it's not like the birds don't have anything else to peck on. The neighborhood is surrounded by woods. Any ideas?? Would a wood pecker bird house help to put in the area of the place they like to damage?? I don't want to mount it to the house but if this would deter them from putting holes in the house- could it help?? We did buy 2 expensive woodpecker houses in the woods and the squirrels love them!

@kwags1386 that's a bummer! The material and deterrents we use are primarily for challenge courses, so they aren't something most folks would want on their house. One thing that might be worth trying is the ultra-sonic deterrents. Bird X has a lot of options at varied price points.
      bird-x.com/shop-online.
I have not tried them, but we have several clients in FL who have HUGE problems with Pileated Woodpeckers. We're in an ongoing battle with them all the time, so we're going to try a BirdX ultrasonic unit there to see if it will be the final layer of deterrent that keeps them off our poles. If you try the unit at your place, please let us know how it worked!

How far down from the top of the pole should hardware cloth be installed?

It really depends on the intensity of the bird activity and the species. In our most challenging environments, we paint the poles with our deterrent paint and then put the hardware cloth down to 20', or even 16' above the ground. We simply install the material and monitor. If we see activity below where we treated, then we extend it. It's very much situation dependant.

      Sheila,
I have never had woodpeckers bother metal. That's really interesting. The company that makes the paint and repair products we use also has a deterrent spray that might help, though I've never tried it for an application such as yours. Feel free to email us at info@theadventureguild.com if you're interested in getting information.

It’s only illegal if a wildlife guy is standing in your backyard or the front yard or nosy neighbors otherwise good luck.👍
