Just like i got burned out on Borderlands after the Pre-Sequel. Didn't even bother buying 3 out of fear my brain would tell me every 5 minutes that it's just like the previous game thus dropping it after the second character playthrough
I love Saints Row, been playing since the first one, but wasn't much of a fan until the second one. I was absolutely devistated when i found out that THIS was the reboot of Saints row we wrre promised.
Personally, I'm worried this is the game that will be the thing that kills the franchise and Volition.

I totally agree with you on the charecters, especially Gat. He was so hyped up in other games. Saints Row 2 was when everyone shined.
Honestly, I'm hoping this reboot stays more grounded and maybe tell a fresher story that could be on par with the older stuff. I'm staying positive for now.

I am more worried about the characters. Instead of gangsters we have geeks/hipsters. And their motives make no sense. I already hate all of those new characters. If this was watch dogs game, I would say fine, because Watch Dogs never had interesting characters, but they have unique gameplay. People say this new cast is diverse, I say they are not. This is the least diverse cast since Saints Row 1. In most of Saints Row games we had more diverse characters, they all were from different backgrounds, most of them were different unique. Now here we have only college students, while in earlier we had characters who also went to college, but we also had those who weren't in college.

See that's where you're wrong. Saints row hasn't been a hit since saints row 2. Saints row 3 was mediocre and 4 was meh but fun. They need to go back to the roots of saints row 1/2.

The point you bring up about shamelessness is the key thing i noticed when seeing the trailer for the first time, the shift to marketable inclusivity is accidentally doing the exact opposite, these new characters are idealized representations, the counterculture is now dissilusioned young adults rather than the sick, trapped, and deposed with no way out other than criminal activity. I could not see any of the characters in the game footage you posted of original SR working a day job, much less pass a background check (not saying thats anything against them, they *should* be able to get jobs, thats the whole problem), but the new group look like they could find work at any number of places with upward mobility but are doing crimes *just* because "screw capitalism this will get us more money faster" (don't get me wrong, eat the rich, just that right now it looks like they are sweeping the less marketable disenfranchised under the rug in favor of more commercially attractive underdogs, we will have to see what happens when the game comes out) which, is reasonable, there have been some great stories about cheating the system because trickle down economics have failed to provide a living wage, but there is a difference between escaping a dead end job and literally being out on the street because of circumstances out of your control, the right answer should be that both of these are adressed, give us accurate representation of the kind of people that find themselves stuck in organized crime because of the life they were born into while also injecting the new blood that see the writing on the wall before it crumbles around them
Your point about making your way to the top also brings up a thought.
How many times will we see the Saints as they were fall and climb their way back up, how much higher can they go. If this game was a spiritual successor with a new name and they said "saint's row is finished, this new game is a saints row game in all but name because the old name was attatched to the old story, and the old story has nothing more to tell and we wanted to close that chapter peacefully,"
It wouldn't change the tonal dissociation, but would removing the saints row name make this any better (or worse)?

I can't believe as a huge saints row fan that I didn't when know a reboot was in the works!
I think after they did that little twitter post that turned out to be promo for the switch ports I gave up paying attention and decided to not stalk volition twitter anymore.
I can't believe this is what they give us after that long wait. Especially when out 4 wasn't as good (but was still really fun as a power trip) as 3...and agents of mayhem...was a game.
I guess I have a lot to catch up on news wise so im gonna do that, thanks for making this video on it!

agreed i love sr2-4 and the reboot looks bad to me honestly and their statements about toning down the humor does not inspire confidence sr2 especially had great writing, characters and humor, while they could get goofy they were still believable as intimnidating gangsters.
I've been playing videogames since the early 90's.
I started playing the SR series with SR2.
I tried going back to play 1 but wasn't that into it.
I Liked 2. But thought it was a little too similar to GTA.
Like a lot of other ppl I played the GTA games around the same sort of GTA3/San Andreas era.
Sandbox style games were staring to become popularized at that time with other releases like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Spiderman etc.
There were so many "clone" type games out there where the game structure, mission structure and gameplay is generally the same.
It doesn't really matter what game it is you knew there was going to be a mission where you had to defeat a wave of enemies, or escort some npc etc.
GTA at the time was trying to take things the more serious route as far as realism and grit.
But, also with their mission structure.
I didn't enjoy playing it
It felt like a chore.
And it would punish you for having too much fun.
SR on the other hand was like "fun version" of GTA.
It took itself less seriously. It had more fun with the mission content and characters, and let you relax and enjoy yourself.
It had a sense of humour.
It didn't punish you for screwing around.
So I liked SR2, way more than the GTA games.
But was like ok... Where does this go from here?
Does it try to chase GTA?
Do we end up with 2 nearly identical games next release?
And I think the devs were thinking the same thing too.
How do we differentiate ourselves from our competition without completely alienating our audience?
I can't remember if it was before or after the release of 3, but...
At some point I wrote a forum post where I encouraged them to embrace the wackiness.
I said you are in a game world. You can make it anything you want.
Have fun with it. Embrace fun side of the game.
Use your creativity.
Make the game fun.
Take all the things you liked from the first two, and put it on steroids.
And I may have told them I wanted jetpacks, super powers, time traveling, and rideable dinosaur.
And I did this because out of all the things that it had going for it. The fun factor was one of the best things about the series in my opinion.
And I was worried about where the game would end up, if they chased making a boring carbon copy of GTA.
Or being lost to history (like The Saboteur)(excellent game) because of other games at the time gaining prominence like Assassin's Creed.
And so when 3 was released and it was a wacky fun sandbox game I was elated.
Because it offered the unexpected.
And it made it enjoyable.
Who cares right? Have fun.
It's a videogame.
But a lot of people were unhappy because it was starting to stray from it's "realistic" roots.
Which I can totally sympathize with - but the competition was already offering basically that experience.
GTA was more popular and made more money.
They needed something to differentiate themselves with.
And I was happy because it seemed like they had decided to go in my direction.
And so by the time 4 was released and then Gat outta hell.
It was a full blown power fantasy being realized at that point.
Like the freedom you have in 4.
You are basically like a god by the end of the game.
That was amazing.
And would we have ever had that experience if they had just decided to go with more of the same as they had already done?
I feel like if they had just made more like that the series would have lost out to GTA in the long run.
Just my opinion of course.
And I can totally appreciate why some ppl want this game to return to it's more gritty realistic roots.
But I'm going to be on the side of being ok with it being wacky and out there.
I would prefer a game that is more free to have fun with itself.
Be able to reference other material and bring it in like Godzilla, Jurassic Park, the Terminator etc.
While not taking itself too seriously.
But really I'm more just glad that we got these games in the long run.
Maybe they weren't the games we wanted. But maybe they were the games we needed.
Like fighting a giant energy drink.
That happened in Saints Row
And nowhere else.
Where would we be without them?
I'm not saying somewhere better or worse.
But we could have equally ended up somewhere more bland, boring, repetitive, unoriginal, and unimaginative.
Where would we be then?
As far as this new game it looks like trash.
I kept waiting for the Saints to show up and wipe the floor with these nerds.
Looks like they decided to completely destroy the series in favor of identity politics.
I'd rather play as their enemies.
Instead I'll play 2,3, and 4 over again.
And enjoy remembering the good times.
And also the widest variety of things you can do in one series.
Like what do you want?
Another fetch quest to get the gang back together?
We did that already.
Take over a city?
Become president?
Save the world from alien invasion?
Why even worry about it?

I think it could be a good game based on the gameplay, customization and all that stuff, but when it comes to story and characters it'll be very bad, and sadly that's the most important thing of a Saints Row game

You've described why I 100% believe SR2 is the best in the series to me. I always found it strange that game journos thought all the fans wanted was really wacky GTA and kept hyping up 4. To be honest I couldn't even finish 3. It definitely had its points, but I just stopped caring. Speaking as a black guy who is always down for some diversity, I did find it really funny they made sure to point out the diverse cast of characters like the saints weren't diverse before. There are a lot more points I agree upon but the post is getting long, so I'll just say thanks for the video.

Yes Saints Row is, now was the Fast and the Furious franchise of sandboxes which only the people who enjoyed all 4 Saints Row games understood.
It is disappointing the Violition/Deep Silver is going el cheapo reboot this time and not making a Saints Row 5.
No Gat, No Shaundi, No Pierce, No Kenzie. You have no Saints Row. Simple as that!
Building a reboot when no one wanted one was the publishers way of making a new game on the cheap. Don't have to hire the old programmers, voice actors, story writers who by the 5th game would likely require higher pay.
With the right writing, I can see them really playing off of this new “relatability.” Lots of games do this and pull the rug right out from under the player, making for some really interesting results. I am giving it the benefit of the doubt … for now.
The simplest explanation for anything is usually the correct one. Two weeks and the super secret gameplay footage that will fix everything is still absent. Gameplay footage that has, conveniently enough, only been seen by a handful of internet shills for Volition. Do we believe Volition is withholding this magical footage, or that it does not, in fact, exist?

The game changed because 3 and 4 where not considered to be successful.
I only played 3 and 4, and wasn't a particular fan of them. I did see why they would appeal to someone though, I got it. I don't really get it from this trailer.
I really hope they keep the powers. The first SR game I played was Gay outta hell and TBH, I'm not interested in a "gritty and grounded" GTA clone. I'd rather have over the top whacky shit than over dark shit.

I'd rather pay for the patch idolninja and some devs were working on than the reboot. 4th was my first and i'm really liking 3rd, but everyone keeps talking about the 2nd and i don't want to spoil my experience with CD Projects bullshit port of it.
I don't care too much about self censorship to not trigger youtube's flags but the ingame subtitles for the cutscenes still have the swears spelled out even when bleeped.
I thought it'd be a funny inside joke, because RUclips surprisingly has ZERO issue with swearing in subtitles.

OMG thank so much for calling out GAT, I like him but he is not a better solider than the Boss or the Playa. Even as an npc I've had nameless Saint's out do him in combat the constant hype gets annoying.
I feel like Saints Row really over corrected to fan criticisms. From 2 to 3 they seemed to lead more into being just over-the-top stupid humour and less on the plot. Like, yeah, the games always were dumb fun...in 2 you drove around a septic truck and sprayed poo on people, but the story didn't seem like a parody of itself. I remember fan consensus about 3 being mixed because of this. 4 was even worse and relied heavily on 80s cultural references as well as cheap pops with references to older titles. Kinda like later Rick and Morty where the writers go up their own asses from the collective hype of the fanbase. Then Gat Out of Hell just felt like a bad fanfic. A lot of fans were pretty vocal about wanting a return to the series being about The Saints and stories centered around, well, your crime empire. Well, they ...sort of delivered but wayyy went too far in the other direction, making the universe not anything like the later titles, opting instead for a more "realistic" (for Saints Row, so them air-quotes are doing MEGA lifting) tone than...even 1 and 2. You gotta find balance between the Hollywood action gang story side and the bombastic, stupid Adult Swim-esque side. 4 leaning too towards the latter with reboot looking to make a hard left towards the former.
Like on one hand it's nice to see we're just a street gang again instead of intergalactic humanity saviours/United States president godkings; on the other hand, none of these characters really have that Saints Row flair and personality. Actually, the writing feels too "Marvel Cinematic Universe," if you know what I mean? Like, every main character has a thing/defining personality trait and almost everything they say is quip-y with many one-liners. While they did make a reboot that completely switched direction, this feels like it should be an original IP since the soul of Saints Row is absent entirely.

I’m content with going back and playing SR1 and SR2 bc those games are masterpieces but this game however I can’t really see a bunch of average Starbucks enjoyers being gangster and the fact that they decided to censor and filter out the raunchy humor that made these games stand out from other “GTA clones” killed it for me I hate what political correctness has done to the entertainment industry nothing is brutally honest, offensive or unapologetic anymore instead everything and everyone is so tame like where’s the fun in that?

On this I disagree with. What is off isn't the Fact this is Saints Row 2 Vs New Saints Row. It's the fact that Saint Row 1,2 & 3 were Great and then Oh My God Why Saint Row 4 exist. More of the issue of Saints Row 4 which you turn into Well Superman, Flash or anyone like that with Guns against outer Space bad guys but please forget that and go on with the Fact that New Saints Row sucks. I still stand with that anything is better then Saints Row 4 Anything. So unless your Planning on Going Saint Row 1, SR2 & SR3 Vs New Saints Row you may have a point But where SR4 goes I say Do your worst with the New SR and still it will be Better then anything that was SR4.
