  • This week around 400 recommendations from survivors of abuse and neglect in state and faith-based care will be made public as the Government considers its response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry. It’s estimated 250,000+ New Zealanders have been affected in historic cases between 1950-1999, including Survivor advocate Eugene Ryder and his sister Loretta Ryder. We hear how Eugene’s bravery gave Loretta the courage to tell her story, one which her whanau did not know. Once torn apart by the system, their testimony has now reunited them as they demand an apology from the Government and transformation of Aotearoa’s care system. ➡️ SUBSCRIBE: / @thehuinewzealand

Physical, sexual & emotional abuse needs to be looked into among families also. Many of kids in state care were victims in their own homes being abused by the people meant to love & protect them.

This a heartbreaking watch. So much of this going on and has been since time immemorial. I so hope the healing has started. Thanks to Jacinda Ardern and her Govt. I am kiwi with english/scot heritage and I have always seen gang member wirh their tattooed faces as people just like me. Obviously they have suffered more trauma than I ever have which is why they found family in gangs. I hope that they find their light. You can see their fragility and Beautiful souls as they are released from their secretive burden they have carried. Shame on those who should have known better

Unfortunately we as a country are doomed to repeat a similar history with the introduction of boot camps there will inevitably be abuse and emotional trauma I pray and hope I'm wrong

It is not just about monetary compensation. Maori and Pasifika were disproportionately represented in state care institutions. Hence, it is not just about money as a form of redress. Rather, it is about an acknowledgment of how these institutions were run; which involved the total neglect and ignorance of Maori and Pasifika worldviews/values/customs. By virtue of the state taking Maori and Pasifika away from their families, it inherently denied and negated their existence as Maori and Pasifika peoples, and instead relocated them under the imposition of Western knowledge/ways of life. Acknowledging and implementing such core cultural values (e.g., Te Ao Maori, tikanga etc for Maori) within redress is arguably more important for survivors to heal from their traumas.

Whatever the response unless it involves those directly responsible for the abuse and I mean on an individual level, it will be largely meaningless and could he more unhelpful than beneficial. As a member of society not involved in the abuse I m never going to wear the hairshirt over something that had nothing to do with me. And if someone tries to impose that upon me I would consider as reprehensible behaviour as those that gave rise to this. Ill advised and ill directed.

Why would someone impose that on you? And who are you or I to say what is helpful or not. It's not about you or any of us who haven't walked in those shoes. Rather, we should be extending compassion and grace to those who have experienced such atrocious trauma.

@@li4436-l9j I think you miss my point, which is that unless the amends involve those directly involved it is unjust to inflict any kind of penalty on those not directly involved, expanding an extending the original wrong if you will.
