- Gaming Pastime reviews SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs for PlayStation 2.
Developed by Zipper Interactive and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs was released for PlayStation 2 in August, 2002. SOCOM is a fun and accessible tactical shooter for the PlayStation 2. It may not be the best of its kind but what it does it does well.

Sony sleeps on Socom and Killzone. If they want to correct the concord loss, this is the way.
After Shadow falls, it's hard for the Killzone series to get back on it's feet, it had a good run, though.
@@tropixx_xlr1549 ShadowFall looked Good; the graphics those were always fine; it needs a better story/ weapon system
Can't have that in 2024 SOCOM was about real MEN stepping up to take the duty most won't. Concord is about men that wear dresses that are mentally ill and believe are women...
omega boost, syphon filter, mark of the kri, motorstorm and twisted metal as well
@@ILLRICARDO gosh, they need to bring them back!!!
Very good to see you covering this iconic PS2 game!
I bought the game & headset, which I still have today. In fact "Manhunt" utilized that same headset to taunt the enemies, which was a very fun gimmick as you call them out verbally, then watch them suddenly look for you, good times on both games!
I was thinking the same thing as I watched this, I still have that headset in a drawer lol. And yes you're right, Manhunt utilized it to great effect. Unfortunately not too many other games did. That screw-on PS2 network adapter didn't get a lot of use either, at least for me
@plain_simple_garak Thanks for you reply, you are correct, aside from those two great PS2 games utilizing the headset, I can't think of a 3rd game using it. It was very fun in "Manhunt", I would laugh every time I would tell the creeps, "Hey fucko, over here!"
Hi, Dean! Always nice to see you around. I actually watched this review and ordered a copy of this first SOCOM!
@AstralFrost You will love the core concept & squad controlled game-play. I also highly recommend the 2nd & even 3rd one in thd series, "SOCOM 2" is incredible bud.
They really need to remake this game, both my son and I would play for hours.
They really dont, theyll mess it up, play dis one, i learned over years to not ask for remasters or remakes or reboots no mo
nah, just a rerelease with modern controls and ui will suffice.
If Sony would re-release the game, it would most likely be part of the PS Classics.
You just said you played it for hours. Why remake it then
Not even a remake. Just update the version with a working MP.
So excited to see you cover these games! I have such vivid memories of playing Fireteam Bravo 3 on the PSP. That and Peace Walker are probably what I used the PSP for the most
You know what's really underrepresented in shooters these days? Jungle maps. Some of the South Asian and South American maps in this series still make an impression more than 20 years late, I don't know why they stopped appearing.
Problem is they're hard to make. Jungles are basically forests with foliage cranked up to 11 which creates all sorts of problems for game devs like AI pathfinding, visibility and performance
The jungle maps were good on sp but mp they were the worse ones other then sujo which was more favelas. Enwopai blood lake etc had horrible frame rates due to foliage and details on the map they looked cool but played trash. Best maps Frostfire crossroads desert glory night stalker
@@warlockiii1846all I hear is excuses. Konami did it 20 years ago with MGS3 these devs have far more money than they did back then, use it.
@@HerotsLament doesnt really look like jungle tho compared to modern standards
A european forest wouldnt be too different gameplay wise
@ribbyg6107 Bitter Jungle could be a mess with frame rates but Ruins and Abandoned were decent offering just enough jungle setting to set the atmosphere but without so much foliage to destroy the frame rate once guns started blazing. Ruins and Abandoned were probably my favorite two online maps in Socom 1. Socom 2 kind of ruined Abandoned making it a night map in the sequel.
Socom 1 and 2 specifically online formed me as a young man lol. I played all the socom ps2 titles online for 5 years with my some of my best friends and it was the best online gaming experience to this day. To this day me and my buddies talk about the good old socom days.
Back before third person shooters figured out the over-the-shoulder camera angle.
I think Fortnite looked very hard at SOCOM and kept the angle
This game was amazing. What they did to the sequel and franchise is criminal.
"Definitely check it out", always liked hearing that catchphrase from you! I'd love to see you review a bad or mediocre game so I can hear you say your other catch phrase, "Definitely skip this one"!
Fireteam Bravo 2 is the only SOCOM I played, it had technical problems, but I enjoy my time with it.
SOCOM to me is one of the series that I am really mad that it didn't come to PC ... I played First and Third Entry a lot on my PS2
Socom is underrated
God I miss this series. I just unpacked my original copy eith the headset out of storage and....ahhh man everyone but 4 was fantastic.
socom 3 had the best campaign by far out of all the ps2 socoms, I played and enjoyed the hell out of it when I was a 15yr old kid
I need that intro sound as my text message alert.
SOCOM 2 was absolute peak back in the day. Used the play the hell out of it.
The subsequent games on the series definitely got better
Nope. Not even close. They all progressively got worse in almost every aspect. The only exception is the the second one added a bunch of new fun maps to the series. Other than that it was a step backwards in both hit detection, hit registry, and even frame rate stability. Everything after the original, and second one was complete trash with maybe the exception of socom Confrontation where they at least tried to get back to the roots of the series but once again fell short and failed. Confrontation was at least playable and had moments where it felt like a socom game.
The PSP Socom games were a lot of fun, despite the limitations of only one analog nub. My favorite of the PS2 games was Socom II. My friends and I played that for most of our junior year in high school
Socom 2 is still one of the best multiplayer games on Playstation.
I've only played Socom 2 and 4. Socom 2 was an amazing game, and I plan to play this one. Socom 2 was the first shooter I played at age 12 thanks to my older brother. That game caused me to become interested in playing shooters today.
I remember being able to control your team through the headset for this game. At the time that was groundbreaking :D this is also the first tactical shooter that i played. Little 12 year old me couldn't stop playing.
socom 3 was my all time fav ps2 game
Immersion sims and tactical shooters, 2 types of games that just died, we need them back
Mad props for giving a spoiler warning for a 22 year old game.
I play this game all the time. On my PS2 and my PS3. I love how stealthy it is and the amount depth the game offers.
My first online game. I got the PS2 network adapter from Sony to beta test this in EU. It was great times. Everyone was friendly even if you sucked when you were the last one alive in your team. Everyone just said "unlucky" or "bad luck" and were supportive. That was so fun to play. Then came Halo 2 and everybody had f'd your mother and online gaming communties hasn't been the same since.
I don't know about a remake, but I'd buy remasters for the Socom games. We haven't had a new one since the PS3.
Rather see Socom, Killzone, Resistance, or Syphon Filter return than stuff like Concord or that other live service game I can't remember its name.
Socom 2 came bundle with my ps2, full on nostalgia here
My favorite game on the PS2. Wish they'd do a reboot of the franchise in the style of Ghost Recon.
You structure the review like a student essay repeating base points at times; but otherwise really good concise review
OMG I feel old. I worked on this game back in the day at Sony.😂
Socom 1 was great but Socom 2 had a more polished single player. Socom 1 single player annoyed me because they had late spawning enemies who would just appear out of thin air and start shooting you in the back. Socom online though was where it was really at with Socom 1 and Socom 2 being just as epic.
"Fireteam breach, bang clear". Still remember the headset commands for the AI squad.
I remember nothing about the campaigns. I just remember multiplayer. It was a ton of fun
Sony's great answer for the emerging tactical shooter market.
Growing up I use to play navy seals to death although number 1 and 2 i keep forgetting the difference so I do keep murgiung the 2 games together but I remember the first one came with the head set witch I thought was soo cool at the time now we’re lucky to get anything for free with games ha …. I remember being soo hyped when I found out about the 3rd game but was very disappointed by the fact it was online only and the servers was always down!! I did like the fact in the 3rd game you could play as diffeeent country’s like the British SAS but that was the only part of the game I do wish someone would remaster these games not remake I feel companies would ruine it but a bit of a remaster for the ps5 with better graphics would be soo good!!
I'm off the opinion that this game was actually quite ahead of its time... They don't make games like these anymore.
Socom 2 is still my all time favorite game i played online.
I was wondering how do you have such good video quality with this game? Do you use a Retrotink 4K and what TV or monitor? This is one of the few PS2 games that for me upscale with strange diagonal double pixels and massive dithering. You don’t seem to have this going on. Love your videos and thank you
Was that footage from the Takedown expansion for R6 Rouge Spear ?
Why did voice commands fall out of favor in solo gaming? I clearly remember controlling my units in SOCOM and Tom Clancy's Endwar. Gamers have far more access to good microphones and voice recognition is so much better... why is this not implemented in more games? I can keep my hands busy while I bark orders, letting gameplay stay smooth and not relying a badly programmed AI to make decisions.
I hated how in SOCOM 1 level selection was locked behind completing a certain difficulty, I got stuck on the POW jungle mission and never finished that difficulty play through. 😢 still butt hurt 2 decades later lol😂 The next Socoms got even better, I especially liked when SOCOM:Combined Assault added multiplayer Co-Op. we used to hook up 2 ps2 and 2 ps3 and play On a LAN connection (no internet needed! )
This game needs a remake or reboot
so basically .... an early 2000s "TC Ghost Recon: Wildlands"
cool
My favorite part about Wildlands was how much it reminded me of SOCOM! Especially Combined Assault, because of the Co-Op
Hey....This is where my name comes from. 😅
Love this game… what’s the best way to play on a 4k tv. There’s so many adaptors but some are so expensive.
Would you be kind enough to let me know was your footage captured on an emulator or original hardware?
My clan was . I was Mako. Damn this brings back memories
The best online game
Was a big tactical shooter fan during this time but never found the appeal of the ps2 socom games single player. The spawning enemies right on you, even in second game ruined it for me. The tactical strike for the psp was the only one i liked single player wise.
Do you need the headset to play single player or can the commands be entered manually?
Great game.
YOU 100% WRONG. The multi player focus is what ruined the franchise. The made the focus 100% online multi player, and it killed the game.
currently trying to find the code for this game and its mechanics to develop something very similar, i need some help mane
You can still play online
Love your work but doing this without reviewing the MP is kind of pointless. 😮
Rockem socom
I liked only Socom 1 after that the rest was meh
You have 47k subs and your videos get avg 4k views
Overrated
