    Local 032 here. Was in a dead end job in HVAC only making 30 bucks an hour in residential. Joining the union and making journeyman was life changing. With all the benefits and 3 pensions plus making $63.27 on the check I never would have been able to make a livable wage before. Thank you UA! As a single dad myself and my daughter are great full!

      This is so inspiring to hear, thank you for sharing. I’ve been really needing a career change, and I’ve been hesitant to start over completely at 30. I’ve been feeling kind of hopeless and like i just pissed my life away and fucked yo.
      I’ve worked in kitchens since I was 15, I turn 30 in a month. I’m a sous chef so I make good money being the number 2 man in the kitchen, but I can’t do it anymore. No benefits. 12 hour days for 6 days a week (far more often than I’d like). Stuck working late nights, weekends, holidays, & birthdays. I have no time to spend with my family and I miss everything. I want to buy a house but I can’t possibly do it working in the restaurant industry. My girlfriend wants to get married and have children so badly, but I refuse to have kids until I can give them everything they need.
      Thank you for giving me the courage to apply. If I get accepted, you’ll be the reason I step out of my comfort zone lol.

      @@fahqkitty dude it’s never too late to make positive changes in your life. I was 28 when I got into HVAC and 32 when I joined the union. I wish I had done it sooner for sure but better late than never. I was a HS dropout that got into all sorts of trouble with the law in my teens and early twenties. Traditionally speaking there was no avenue for me to be as successful as I am today due to my life’s choices. But here in the trades if you show up to work on time every day and care about the product you give to your employer you WILL make journeyman and have all the benefits of the union package.
      What trade are you applying for? Who did you talk to down at the hall? You’ll want to get in asap as we are already seeing some GCs work being cancelled due to customers fearing a recession.

    • @superIBM1231
      @superIBM1231 Месяц назад

      It really depends on where you are and the work available. If you’re in a big city expect somewhere from 20 minutes to an hour commute at most. If you’re out in a rural area in can be even longer. I am lucky enough to live in Portland working at intel. 30 minutes to work and 45 back working 4-10s. Just remember as an apprentice you cannot choose where you work they will put you as needed. So it is possible to have work available close by but being assigned to somewhere an hour away because the demand is greater (that is what happened to me my first year)

Please no bashing me I understand and I know the odds are stacked against me but I would appreciate only positive and uplifting responses I can make myself feel like s*** all on my own and I don't know where else to turn so any advice would really be helpful thank you and God bless

I was in the military for 4 years and have only worked security since I got out and it’s miserable but I’ve been applying for as many trade apprenticeships as I can. Even at your age there’s plenty of trades that need hands and hard work, don’t give up!

      I feel the exact same way as you do brother. You are not alone. I’m 30 and I’ve been feeling hopeless and terrified to walk away from the dogshit “career” I put 15 years into. I worked hard to get the wage I make (even though it really isn’t shit, never mind with inflation), and I’m scared to give it up even though it doesn’t provide what I need. I’ve been super depressed as well feeling like i just pissed my life away and fucked up.
      I’ve worked in kitchens since I was 15, I turn 30 in a month. I’m a sous chef so I make “good money” being the number 2 man in the kitchen, but I can’t do it anymore. No benefits. No hours one week, the next I’m forced to work 12 hour days for 6 days a week (far more often than I’d like). Stuck working late nights, weekends, holidays, & birthdays. I have no time to spend with my family and I miss everything. I want to buy a house but I can’t possibly do that working in the restaurant industry. My girlfriend wants to get married and have children so badly, but I refuse to have kids until I can give them everything they need.
      I’m at the point where I’ve just about given up. I feel pathetic and like a lost cause. But lately I’ve been trying to remind myself that it can all be different in one single day. What we want and need won’t happen immediately, and it will challenge us in so many ways. But in the end it will all pay off, and we’ll look back on the day we made the decision to step out of our comfort zone and take that leap of faith as the singular day when it all changed.
      I’m right there with you brother. Take the step towards your leap. If they call you, make not one excuse and just do it.
      I was reminded of this quote the other day.
      “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Go plant your tree, brother.

The fact that you have endured 15 years is incredible.ive never had 15 years experience at anything so maybe just try and take your craft to the next level. Made me tear up a bit with how much this hits home for me. Also been a landscaper or rather would be if my vehicle didn't catastrophically fail while driving it 1/2 a year a go... Plus Canadian winters some money problems... Its been rough... I don't know how to get myself outta this rut.
      Worked in kitchens before that... Now I'm 34 and feel like everyone's left me in the dust and I have no one or nothing to lift me up... Only myself... I'm going to call the UA first thing monday morning and see where it leads me, I hope they are willing to help a confused, generally skill-less dude like me...
      I just want to have a happier future and learn to add real value to peoples lives through hard-work, study and determination.
