0:50 damn I have never seen a nail swing hit that meaty* in hk (AKA swing hit the small double sawblades during its later active frames rather than the first active frame)
They are for knock back, the longer nail hits the wall, it just doesn't look that way, and at the rate of speed they are going because of TAS assistance, it is hard to actually see the small knock back of it, hope this helps.

The completely empty side slashes (those that hit literally nothing) are, as tamijo said, to help make wings jumps faster for reasons I don't quite understand. But if the nail does hit the wall then it's what power angel and zkydo said. Probably a mix of both.

Played it again 2 years later with 3 hours, repeated it with 1 hour, repeated it with around 45 minutes and 45 minutes again, although my progress slowed down much because I was getting tired, in my last one I completed the last obstacle path the second try. You are both so fast, but 20-25 minutes if real is just unbelievably fast to me first try,
Cyclone slash requires you to dash over the blades near the bottom before the first checkpoint, and the TAS doesn't have dash available at that point, so they pogo and skip landing on the platform which is just as good. Idk what you mean about the downdash, is there normally one?
