It’s sad that this is the last song with Bon. As kids, we thought this album was so cool, but I could not let my parents know I was listening to this. I was about 11 when it came out, and the TV show Mork and Mindy was very popular. That “Shazbot, nano, nano”, at the very end, was what Mork from Ork always said.
Having never watched that show (except maybe a scene that came up on RUclips), I actually found out the link about two or three years ago. All these years I wondered what that last utterance was about😆.
There is a reason Bon did that at the end of the song. Apparently he thought the song was too dark, and it actually bothered him. So he ad libbed that quote at the end just to break up the "heaviness" of the subject matter.
"Shazbot...Nanu Nanu" The last words Bon spoke on a recorded album, in reference to Robin William's character in Mork & Mindy meaning "Goodbye for now".
Proud to be an AC/DC fan for over 40 years. And like fine wine their music gets better with age! Every song on "Highway to Hell" is a banger and as much as I love "Back in Black" it's hard to beat "Highway to Hell", "shazbutt, nanu nanu".
I’m a Melbourne girl, and got to see them live with Bon so many times as a teenager. At least 5 times 74/75 alone. Bon Scott will always be it for me, have never seen them since he died. Im now 62 and still adore this era of their music. He broke my heart when he died.
One of the Young brothers explained that the song was about a boy that sneaks out at night to go to his girlfriend's bedroom and also about someone that was known in their neighborhood to steal women's undergarments at night. The song came out in 1979, a number of years before the "Night Stalker" killings in California in 1984-1985. The frenzy with the song came about when an AC/DC hat was found at one of the crime scenes and the media ran with the idea that the killer was a fan of the band. The band didn't take too kindly to their song being connected to a serial killer.
The last words on the track are from the old TV show, Mork & Mindy. Robin Williams starred as a ridiculous space alien named Mork from Ork. "Shozbot" was an Orkan curse word, and "Nanu-nanu", a friendly greeting. Bon dug the show.
