Paul Gertner appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us an unprecedented 3 times and FOOLED them this 3rd appearance to break the tie! His first time he appeared he performed the card trick, Unshuffled with a Kicker, his second performance was Cups & Steel Balls with a twist and Paul fooled Penn and Teller this third time with the card trick Namerology. Find out more about Paul Gertner and his close-up magic as well as his trade show magic at www.gertner.com. Nice detail showing the first card you set down on each pile, so we know the royal flush isn't there... until it is. Great trick. Certainly fooled me.
Kragatar that's right he did. Paul is the man. He can do crazy stupid things with cards and you never catch him
ahhhhh, i didn't catch that, i was sure there was a reason but i didnt connect it. Nice one!
Yeah... he is *_really_* good at pulling off those twists that catch you totally off guard !!
I don't get it.
It fooled me at first too because it was a twist ending. No one was really expecting it, so no one was even looking for it. However, i did notice something "off" about the royal flush reveal the first time through. Upon the second viewing my thoughts were confirmed. I'll say that it was set up beautifully to deceive, but the actual 'move' at the end is something 100% of people could do. If Penn and Teller were close up, he wouldn't have fooled them.
6:31 You can visibly see Penn say "Oh dear" haha.
I wonder what he was going to say after that "BUT".
Baris Yakut
I want to know also
I think he thought he hasn't fooled them. I'm pretty sure the were close to the actual secret.
Possibly that he added something in but 'not' when his back was turned. He may have added something but as they asked if he did it when his back was turned then they got it wrong. Adding something in at some other point in the trick would count as a fool and he realised that and quickly stayed quite 😉
They were suggesting he added the 5 spades into the deck after the people drew their cards - keep them out of the deck to make sure none of them got selected. Thing is, Mr. Gertner is slick enough to do the trick while keeping the cards in the deck throughout - BUT even if they were out of the deck and he added them back, he would've done that without turning around. That's such a hokey entry-level thing to do and he's way too professional.
Somebody give me the time-stamp when his back was turned? I can't find that.
Never mind, found it. 2:50
Your version of Cups and balls was best I ever saw. Fooled me.
good on you Paul - not an easy feat!
*People in the comments* "Oh this was a very easy trick"
*Me* currently contemplating reality.
If you are in the Boston Area or visiting on a Friday Night come and see the Magic that Fooled Penn & Teller Live. The 7:00pm show is Sold Out most nights... but we just added a 9:00PM show and tickets are still available. Go to: www.MiraclesAndOtherDeceptions.com
Love how he always does a last minute twist..
All the cards in the flush were already on the table when the card first trick began but were all covered up by small sheets of black felt to match the table/matt he was doing the trick on at the end he fixed up all the piles ontop of the ones he had already prepared and lift the cards up underneath the stacks to look like they were the bottom cards. if u go full screen you can kind of see the felt im talking about :)
Man I love watching Paul. His cup and balls is still one of my favorite acts. This trick is one of the few I saw coming because it is similar to I trick I do, but the story telling and the act itself was still amazing to watch.
So happy for you, Paul. That was just astounding.
Say what you want, I still think the most entertaining one was the one with the cups.
But I just love it all. It's the perfect combination of entertainment by storytelling, magic and just being an all around great act.
Shout out to the Kentucky weather map at the top of the screen
I've watch Mr. Paul Gertner since I was a child, and he is by far one of the BEST magicians of OUR time ( still counting today!). A legend by his own right! He never fails to amaze and astound and drop my jaw each and every time! The only illusion/trick I've never seen you perform is the Ring On Hourglass.
-- Mr. Gertner you are up there with the greats such as Dai Vernon, Ed Marlo, Alan Ackerman, David Roth just to name a few! Thank you for everything you have done and given to the magic community!
Absolutely true. He is a true masterclass. I love he keeps the classics alive and modernizes them.
Just wow at the precision and fluidness of that sleight of hand. I know most magicians know the basics of that (first) trick, but doing it while the camera is closeup on your hands so you can even see the slightest nervous shivering is just insane. Very happy to have been fooled by the second part as well. Great performance!
You fooled them again incredible. Your handling was so smooth. I wish I had your kind of control with the cards. Pure MAGIC.
Notice that the royal flush he revealed in the end were not in the initial stack of cards when he showed the whole deck at the beginning.
I think this is one of those tricks that even if you know how he did it, you still can't catch him doing it because he's just too good. I caught him for delivering their cards right away, but with repeated rewinds I still can't catch the royal flush. Penn had a really good guess though. Great trick.
You can't catch him setting up the Royal Flush because he never did. He's such an amazing card trick performer that you (And P&T) believe that's how he would do it. Truth is, if you are looking for him palming cards, or manipulating the deck, or even using a gimmick deck you are looking where he wants you to look and not at the details that give away the trick. He wants you focused on how he manipulated the deck, because then you will never figure it out because he never did with the Royal Flush. That trick is laid out right in front of your eyes from the very beginning, and he did a fantastic job at camouflaging this fact through his performance, using his pedigree to cover for a rather simple trick.
think you are implying how i figured it had to be done. It's not always meant to be something complicated or hard that fools them, it's more fun when someone fools them with something like how i think this one was done. So simple and I'm sure P & T would figure it out with a video replay. But Paul used his reputation and their P&T's own preconcieved notions about him as misdirection.
really nice covert answer, people can only understand this if we know how he did it :))
Oughtbe - Great job using hints like P&T to explain how the trick with the royal flush was done!
actually i think Teller figured it out at 10:07, the moment he managed to get a closer look at the cards. Nonetheless, great trick and use of misdirection.
You say every trick should have a kicker ending so when u found the 5 cards i was like o theres more
Just so good
Congrats on fooling them again and congrats on new show. Wish I could catch you on tour someday
I love that you used the Harrisburg, PA affiliate for the CW. That used to be an awesome place to work. Congrats on becoming a two time fooler
0 chance this could have been done with teller on that table. still great job man :D
@Paul Gertner - Your control and manipulation of the deck is so amazing. I just can't get enough of watching you with cards in your hands.
Paul Gertner is just another level of cool, in the best way i can imagine.
I like how Paul just casually shows us the returned cards while relating the story. It's like: go ahead, verify on your own; I don't have to tell you what's happening -- just relax and enjoy, everything will work out great -- and that's like encouraging people to be happy. And all that practice -- doing it again and again -- because you're invested in a good show. What a class act.
congratulations!
your cup and ball routine amazes me every time i watch! such talent! thanks for sharing!
People like you and Shawn Farquhar and Jack Hanna, you are one of the most loveable folks in internet. Keep the good vibes going!
Could be wrong, think I saw a second deal once or twice, but crazy well done trick.
This trick cannot be done that way since he doesn't know how many letters in their names
9:09 thats not a listening face.
Thats a "haha i defintly fooled them" face.
What a legend
I frickin love your stage energy
Lmao he trolled Penn and Teller twice. 😂 just the greatest
Paul is fantastic. I'm glad he's the first 3x returner.
3:28 "Did you ever hear the tragedy of Thomas Preston? I thought not, it's not a story the magicians would tell you"
I like that guy. So gifted. So sympathetic. He deserved it.
Dang Mr G, im no magician, but your presentation is just so smooth! I watch over and over in amazement like a 5 year old...
I saw his live show in person in Boston, really intimate space. Was a ton of fun, would highly recommend it to anyone in the area.
"there's no way I could've done anything" YEAH RIGHT
You are a legend man. All three of your tricks are some of my favourites from the show.
just love this show , , should be on mainstream tv again .
I hope they survived that excessive heat warning.
I like how they were straight forward with him without using code words.
Simply amazing! I wish I could go see one of your shows! :)
Always love watching this artist.
I love to see him performing...
Congrats on all of the tricks. For non-magician viewer, I enjoyed them all very much! Thank you and good luck!
Is it just me that find joy, when Pen calls someone a rat bastard? :D
Great card trick loved the story as well =) Congrats Paul
what an amazing trick and performance
Wonderful trick. Paul Gertner, you amaze me each time you are on- wonderful.
Your awesome anytime I need a lift in my day to re-energize myself I watch one of your videos
I watched this on tv last night. I immediately knew how he did the first part and he even concedes P&T possibly knew, too. But I have no clue how he got the royal flush on the bottom cards. I've watched three times here and can't see how he did it. He even shows the bottom cards of each pile before counting each pile out. This is going to bother me. Hope you're happy, Paul! :-)
Matt Foley I can tell you lol....
I watched some more in slo mo. Still don't know how he gets the royal flush but I definitely noticed something different about the piles after he turns them over. That's all I'm gonna say.
Nicholas Benoite how??
Easy trick to figure out, not easy to perform though.
if you want to know i can tell you. The trick is super simple.
first when you get people to select cards and place them back in the deck you force them to the top and then to the bottom (this gets them in the same order as revealed bottom to top for five cards)
So now the order of the deck doesnt matter. the 5 cards are at the bottom and the first is the last card at the bottom (5th card being 5th from the bottom).
he deals the cards and then on the last one he takes the bottom card to place on top of the packs. (he does this 5 times)
During this time he shows the first card he puts down.
However, when you look at the revealed flush, you can see that the cards arent great quality... there are black marks on them.
From there you can maybe imagine. but the backs of the flush cards are as black as the mat he is on.
The cards were already there as he dealt them, you just couldnt see them (the producers also know the angles to place cameras as to not reveal this (also why he didnt ask penn and teller to come up on stage) because at close range its easy to tell).
he also hides the backs by flipping the entire pile not just the card.
He's like the Martin Sheen of magic.
Congratulations on your 2nd 'Fool Us' Win!!
Congrats on fooling them a second time!
I think it's the weather alert in the top that keeps my eyes redirected away from the trick....got an idea on how it's done, but i'm certainly not good enough to pull this one out.amazing!would love to make it to a show in boston if you have one in early October.
We will be putting October Dates on the Schedule soon. You can subscribe and sign up for an advance notice of new date at the bottom of this page: www.MiraclesAndOtherDeceptions.com
Probably will have 2 shows on Friday October. 5th at 7 & 9pm. Just waiting for the hotel to confirm. Paul Gertner
This was recorded off Pennsylvania local TV nice touch
Mr Gertner I love u greetings from Germany
I loved your cups-and-balls trick. You had some.. heh.. real balls to pull that one off, and it was just SO entertaining. The "Unshuffle" totally blew my mind. This one.. I question physics. You're phenominal, sir.
I'm going to be come a magician so I can meet Alyson Hannigan.
This takes as much practice as playing the fiddle like Jascha Heifetz. Amazing technique..... Bravo!!
Congrats! So well earned.
your spot on P&TFU was great too Nathan!
badass legend!
Amazing work. I really love to see card tricks that you can do with multiple people, and that was one of the best I seen. Should have briefly mentioned that if all the names are long you would run out of cards, which is why you had to shorten the ones at the end. Small thing to mention at the start, that would have made that middle part much smoother IMO since it looked like you were doing something shady when you were not.
I KNOW HOW HE DID IT!
first and the simplest is the last trick. the royal straight flash cards were on the fabric from the beginning! he painted the back of the cards black that is why you can see black lines around the cards in 7:05.
And about the audience cards, he put them on the bottom of the deck with sleight of hands when he was telling the Story, and when he start counting he pulled the first 12 or 14 cars from the top and the last card from the bottom, that is why his pinky only moves when he pulled the every last card 4:53.
probably the best magician on the show hope to see you again soon paul
I saw the trick with getting the 5 people's cards where they were needed. The royal flush got me.
Paul your voice is so soothing!
You're one of my favourites to ever have been on this show and the reason why is that you aren't too "stagey"... I find that some of the better (as in their performances are really complicated) Magicians tend to be too stagey and what I mean is that they have a persona or try and lay it the performance aspect of it on too thick... Hammy? Maybe, is a better term. Of which you are not Hammy. You have a polish without the glare from the shine. In your first time on the show, I noticed that you're hands were shaking, which you might say... that's arbitrary a thing to notice... but it actually helped me to connect more with you and the trick because you were performing a trick... and a really good one! But you're still a human being and you were nervous of course. Your hands weren't shaking so much here, but your voice trembles at times. Imperfection makes you more interesting and it certainly doesn't hurt that this is in my top five favourite tricks ever performed on the show.
I am a tough person to please but you are the only one that I would ever actually pursue to see their show. And I actually have been saving and intend to do just that whenever I can get the time off.
TL:DR, I am a really big fan. Thanks for doing what you do and being both entertaining and inspiring as you do it.
Thanks for the very kind words. And you were right... that fist time on Fool Us was nerve wracking... that specific trick requires a perfect shuffle... one card off and it’s all over. I never wanted to do that one on TV but that’s the one the producers wanted. Stay safe.
Great guess by Penn! Thought they got it there for a second. I guess the first part is quite obvious but that twist at the end! He even showed the bottom cards before dealing them down! Mind blown...
I like how the trophy reads "F U". I can't see "fooled us" in my mind >
congrats, Paul.. fantastic magic
I believe the number of cards counted out loud don’t match the number of cards dealt.
The volunteers’s cards were returned to the deck on spots Paul selected.
You are great paul...
There is a black platform on top of the black table covering. He performs the trick on the platform. Is it possible the Royal Flush was always laying face down, with the backs of the cards either black or of the same fabric and flush with the top of the platform? Before he flips the cards over, he appears to square and align them, then flips each one identically using two hands, slighting "digging" with his right hand. Then he lays them down right on top of the space where they sat. The Royal Flush cards cast a disproportionate shadow. or look slightly thicker than the rest. Speculating, but I'd guess the platform holds the secret. Pulling the audience member's chosen card was just dealing from the bottom of the deck. Cool trick!
Amazing trick. Your moves are way smooth, and I was thoroughly entertained and baffled. Thank you, sir.
Wow...Fantastic Paul.. Pleasure meeting you at the Yacht Club !!
Beautiful performance.
This guy is great!
i love this guy
This is really an awesome trick, but if you look closer at the piles you can figure it out kinda easily, not gonna spoil it to anyone tho
Please come back a fourth time! Love seeing them sweat 😂
Such a nice person
i knew he would fool them. he is almost perfect. carry on
A third outfit in 4 years. For Allyson
She wears the same outfit at each taping so they can compile the tricks into different episodes for the season.
btw: so do Penn & Teller
Yeah it's more noticeable for a woman to wear the same dress than a man the same suite and tie, but it makes since from a tv production and theater production stand point.
I fukkin hate her. sorry for the profanity but she's gotta GO!
Penn and Teller are always dressed the same too pay attention
I really like this guy, he does insane things that I only know half of the moves he does. This one feels like he used a LOT of control, but the kicker was that royal flush. I can't help but feel... that the flush wasn't there until he swiftly flipped over the packs of cards. if he performed a one handed pass in that position, he deserves a Fool Us even if Penn and Teller did catch it.
I can't say I know what particular method he used; I think I might have an idea but regardless he is so damn smooth it's totally up in the air. A master of the craft - I'm so happy for him and I wish all the success and luck!
Great work yet again, Paul.
Wooow!!!! I really thought I knew what he was doing and at the end he just blew my mind! I'm thinking and thinking.. and the only thing I can think of has something to do with the black carpet. Wow! What an amazing twist!
Congrats!
Producers/judges are likely listening to Penn and Teller discuss their ideas. Remember they have mics on. That makes it easier for judges/Alison to know they were fooled
Nicely done man, you've bested them
I got some chills on that shit
Teller's "Oh!" to Penn tells us they were legit fooled
I just love Alyson. 😘😍
Great story, great trick
But the number of letters in the participants names didn't effect the results. That would've been a nice touch.
Great show
Amazingly simple trick but very impressive.
The first part wasn't that unexpected but the flush at the end is the icing on the cake that made it great
Knowing that everything Paul uses is important, will help figuring this one out.
