I wholeheartedly agree. Having a script for my mini-doc and other video projects made editing a breeze for me. I was able to get through my projects effectively and ahead of deadline.
This is so key! Around two weeks ago when I was making my first short documentary and I was between the pre-interview and the interview, I stumbled on another video of yours where you talked about scripting. This was the first time I had heard of this concept in documentary filmmaking and I was skeptical at first, the same arguments popped into my mind that you mentioned, but I decided to script out the documentary anyway- not word for word, but important story beats. It was so freaking helpful! I knew exactly what I needed to ask in the interview and I got a way bigger % of useable material than ever before. Thank you for bringing this to people's attention, Alex. I wish this was talked about more.
Love what you are sharing Alex. I assume that like me most of your viewers have a level of technical competence with the gear, but eliciting and crafting a compelling story can be a real challenge - however great the footage. The other aspect that is all too often overlooked for documentary projects are the multiple talent and property releases that are required. It would be really interesting to hear how you address these important legal dimensions in your documentary work.
This was excellent! Thank you for creating this. What I would like to see is an actual outline of the story you're telling that you can use for pitching to the networks or to raise money or even for a client. Maybe there's a video out there already done. Anyway, I subscribed, thanks again!
I am a storyteller that has aspirations to make documentaries. Really find your videos EXTREMELY helpful and informative. In terms of sit down interviews and those you follow to capture their routine or reality, what is the maximum number of subjects you recommend interviewing or following in a day?
Bro your channel is the best for someone who wants to make documentaries!!! I am still waiting for the full course, meanwhile I want to congratulate you and ask if you sell a template of your moodboard, storyboard, script and interview questions!!! I really would like to get it!!!
Thank you for these tips. I want to do a documentary about my life so that when I die, my family will have this. I would love to interview you on my new podcast so that you can tell my audience why they should do one… Have a documentary created while we’re still alive. AnyWho… Great info🙌😊
@@Alexzarfatifilms it’s always intriguing to find patterns that work for the betterment of a story. You are appreciated Brother. I shoot High-Wedding and looking to venture out in Documentary. Thanks for sharing.
Great info and I appreciate your time. Is it at all possible to make a video that could get into a little depth about including a budget in the treatment? Thanks again!
One more thing I would like guidance on is the structure of a 24 min documentary. Is there a template or standards for instance on duration times for intro; trailers, credit rolls etc.
this was so great. i would love to know if you have any templates or outlines specifically for documentary outlining/writing? I could really use something like this right now.
Hey Dana, thanks for reaching out. We actually have templates that were building out that will be available to anyone who signs up for our course. We hope to have the course out by the end of summer or the beginning of fall this year. I will definitely keep you posted on this.
