In a 34-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Naseeruddin Shah spoke about a range of issues that have been in the news recently. They include the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur’s boast that “India has everything that any developed nation in the world has”, Foreign Minister Jaishankar’s criticism that the West “has a bad habit of commenting on others … if (they) keep doing this other people will also start commenting and they will not like it when it happens” as well as the Prime Minister’s claim, made most recently at President Biden’s Summit of Democracies, that India is “the mother of democracy”.

I think people who are commenting here should farm a group and spread this kind of views to more peoples because it's very clear that most of us atleast know what we need to save in our next generation and what we need to increase to save our society/ country. We all believe atleast to respect others thought process and that is what getting reduce day by day in our society . Respects others views, religion, culture , living. Live and let others live their life. Make our law take care of who is doing wrong but not the group of people by their own...love the interview and their thoughts..

Nice to see these unbiased conversations . The one observation I have is Karan thapar should show interest and lend his ear when naseerudin shah is speaking. Karan seems to busy reading something on his desk and does not seem to show any interest to what the guest has to say. It comes across a bit rude according to me. Other than that a great interview. I don’t agree with everything that naseerudin Shah says but there are certain things that he said definitely resonates with me.

Narendra Modi isn't just complicit but has himself used 'Hate' words and speech to grow up in Gujarat Politics and become an unchallenged entity in the BJP! Please recall, 'Tum Panch and Tumhare Pachis'; the use of Dogwhistles was far too common and continued even after his move to Delhi, 'Kabristan-Shamshan' and people can be recognised by the gear.
His Gujarat innings of use of hate speeches in Gujarat and continued use in the form of Dogwhistles is an impetus to the lesser leaders of the BJP. The promotion of Anurag Thakur is also an encouragement for others; the others would do so to advance in the BJP.

His complaints would be valid IF none of the following were true:
    1. Sharia Law over Constitution
    2. Ghazwa-e-Hind
    3. Islamic Terrorism
    4. Population Jihad
    5. Rioting and Stone Pelting
If the majority of Indian Muslims loved Bharat, they would have fixed the above problems themselves. But clearly, the majority seems to want Islamic Rule to be established in Bharat!

      What past?
Brother I'm from the North East India
1.And still the NCERT curriculum and we don't even have a single history chapter of North East from 6-12 class
      And I'm learning it
Do u think this is fair?
      2. Regarding Indian civilization we had many kingdoms of glory like Vijaynagar, chola , Pandya, cheras, Marathas. And North Indian kingdoms too
Is there any chapter about Chatrapati sivaji Maharaj in the NCERT curriculum?
Our medieval history only talks about Mughal and there was not a single word "INVASION" in the history and we know what's the reality and their deeds.
We know the story of what Mughals did to Sambhaji , Teg bahadur and Sikh gurus
      But not a single mention
They're portrayed as if they're the best. Do u think a Sikh Punjabi and Marathi person would love to read that kind of history
And ask today's student the name of Mughal emperor
      They'll quickly answer it
But ask any 3 kings from Gupta dynasty
They won't even know it. Because it's out of syllabus
Do u think this is fair way learning history?
We already were the richest civilization in our past even before Mughals
      During Maurya, Vijaynagar, Gupta's
And these historians like Romila Thapar is white washing our history
      3. Regarding Indian independence movement
      We only learn about Gandhi
But the one who contributed in this movement was Subash Chandra Bose and his INA Armys
      And Bhagat Singh.
Not a proper mention of them

I totally agree with Mr Naseeruddin Shah. I was also a target of bully and attack just because of my religion in class 7 to 10 when I studied in a Brahmin administered High School in late 70,'s in Madras city, yes I repeat very much in Madras city where you don't see much communal violence or hatred. I faced enormous challenges both from my Brahmin teachers and some classmates alike. They not only taunted and bullied me on a daily basis but also used to attack me physically as I was the only Muslim pupil in the whole of that high school until I left after year 10. I can still remember not only those Brahmin teachers names who used to hit, slap and made me to stand on my knees outside the class in the scorching summer heat with part of my knees buried under rough sand. As if this was not enough, I was followed and chased by a few classmates outside the school cursing and abusing me with all sorts of dirty language in Tamil until I boarded the public bus to home. All this happened to me just because of my name which I can't forget until my life although I left India More than 33 years ago. When it can happen in Madras city in 1970's where there was no presence of RSS or BJP, or Bajrang Dal, VHP, or any other violent Hindu organisations at the time, I can't even imagine what a Muslim might be going through all over North and Western Indian States in today's political atmosphere.

During British rule, they were in power and own money and were educated. after 1947 those racist hindus left before the portion fearing their lives, because of their hatred towards the Muslims and how they treated Muslims. Just like now in several states of India. Muslims of West Bengal and Kerala are not suffering much, but in West Bengal, Muslims rarely hold any govt jobs and traditionally it went to Hindu upper castes, fear of life is much less because one-fourth of the pop are Muslims in West Bengal.

Mr Shah, I can understand the hate bred during the times of partition when families lost their loved ones. But today? When people have lived together for so long they have experienced harmony. But yes when grandparents from the partition time have consistently shared their trauma they faced then, has definitely percolated and imbedded as a deep seated opinion. Also the repeated negativities reinforced during cricket matches has been well entrenched in their psyches! I hated this attitude and always questioned whether it is a game they were watching or a war? That is one reason why I never took interest in cricket. And this is perpetrated by so-called educated people!
The lack of consideration and the superiority complex stems from being partly educated and when education is only a means to get a job. Just mugging up texts only to vomit it to get good marks is not "education", it's mugucation! Even today reading does not happen in families. Reading is only limited to schools! Very few read relevant stuff. And now the only source of "Education" is WhatsApp University!

I would also like to say that many of us know the big role he has played in shaping our popular culture in the past several decades since his entry into public life. It is a delight to watch people like him and Akhtar Sahab talk about religion, society, politics and India. We need more genuine philosophers and thinkers like them in public life.

I am really happy to see that there are still some INDIANS left in our society. Most of them have started identifying them with a particular religious group claiming them to be hindus, muslims, sikhs, christians, etc but few identify them as INDIANS. I being a muslim grew up with all my friends being non muslims, where we hardly cared about who is from which religion. We were just a bunch of kids cherishing our childhood together. We used to celebrate diwali with the same enthusiasm as eid, christmas with the same as holi. I really miss those days when we were human beings. I really feel sorry for people who spend their whole life living with hate not realising that life so short that we will perish from this globe without realising that our time has ended. I ask the people of dharm that what is dharm? Is killing innocent individuals in the name of religion is dharm? Is that what makes you happy is your dharm?
I can literally tell you that the majority portion of each religion overlaps with the other and what we actually differ is in the concept of god. Few believe that god takes forms and others don't but the good deeds are more or less common and people hardly care about them because all they want is to fight and satisfy their anger in the name of religion.

I am from kashmir where 98% people are muslims. It makes me sad how much less value is given to education here. I remember once i was studying with my muslim friend who was extremely sharp. He jokingly said to his uncle that in the next text he want a rank above me. His uncle replied " beta exam mein koi bhi upar aaye , aakhirat mein jab upar jaooge , jaanat toh tum hi jaoge toh us hisab se raho , ye exam aur padai se kuch nahi hoga ". But I don't agree with Mr Shah's statement that Indian Muslims shouldn't lament that they are not considered for jobs in any sector Such as Financial, Banking, public and private administration, Army, Paramilitary, Police, judiciary and media. There are hundreds of Muslim run educational institutions all over India from Kashmir to Kerala, which has been producing thousands of Muslims candidates highly skilful in their respective educational background each year, but yet they are deliberately sidelined just because of their religion which has been the case since 1947. Despite being at least 15% of the country 's population, they hardly get 1 or 2% of jobs in those above mentioned sectors . The 5 South Indian states alone have more than 35 Autonomous Universities run by Muslim establishment that produces many thousands of highly skilled Muslim students each year. I suggest Mr Shah to do some research before he talks about some uneducated Muslims based mainly in UP and Bihar .

Problem with these Hypocrites like Nasaruddin Shah and his ilk is they have selective criticism. Fact is all minorities have been wiped off from a country like Pakistan but this guy has never said a word. Majority in India have been suppressed and conspired against for centuries whether Mughals killed millions of Hindus or Colonial British who divided Indian society to establish their rule. So there has been this frustration all these years. But that's ok it's embedded in the religion he follows. They all talk about secularism but hardly practice themselves. I loved Naseeruddin Shah's acting & now it's great to get a taste of his intellectual mind. The video was very interesting & informative, indeed!! After majoring in Political Science from India, and having lived in the US most of my life, I take a keen interest in democracy & government, but politics always bored me ..... until recently!! All that I learned to be civil & democratic is being challenged in so much of the world. Images of Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine are disturbing, the war in Ukraine distressing, but witnessing what's happening right here, in the US when Trump was leading & the destruction (not to mention the disgrace) he managed to cause in a four year term, got me totally interested, involved & now voicing my concerns. I think of myself as a Human Rights Advocate, & a "passive" political activist too. I consider USA to be my FatherLand, and when I look upon my MotherLand (India - which I proudly referred to as Hindustan, but now hesitate to do so), I see the same nonsense happening on a larger scale there. {The divide & rule, the religious extremism, the discrimination, the double stands, the hypocrisy & the blatant disregard for decency, civility & justice for all}. We did manage to "Dump Trump" here, now it's time to "Surrender Nirendra" there!? First (slowly but surely) the Modi Worship needs to subside, so that campaigning can be effective. He needs to be voted out & replaced by someone who will UNIFY, not defy & extremify, a nation that's heading south (as in going down) God Help Us, Ahmain, Ahmeen, Amen!!

My final but very important question to Mr Shah is that it looks like he is very happy to pronounce, although he is a Muslim, but married a Hindu woman and his children are atheist or don't believe in any religion. But why is that in India it has to be always a Muslim actor or actress (Except Dilip Kumar Saab ) to ignore their religion, marry a non Muslim person of opposite gender, then openly boast that their children don't follow any religion or follow both, when all the Hindu actors and actresses openly follow their religion irrespective of who ever they marry, go to temples from Pashupathinath to tirupathy and follow their tradition do all sorts of pooja etc. That itself shows Muslim actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Salman khan, Shah rukh khan, Aamir khan, Saif, feroz khan, Tabu, Kushbhu, Mumtaz, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi etc etc are all suffering from INFERIORITY COMPLEX either not to follow their religion once they become an actor or openly show animosity to their religion of birth just because they have earned fame and money.?. I hope Mr Shah and all his other namesake Muslim bandwagon actors and actresses would agree with my above point that you guys are definitely suffering from "INFERIORITY COMPLEX SYNDROME"

True, in 60s and 70s many Hindus, particularly those under the influence of RSS like me, had less-than-respectful attitude toward Muslims. But Congress strongly promoted secularism and even though we hated Congress we grew out of anti-Muslim bias with our own rational thinking and not without help from Government' strong secular stand. Maraths and Sikhs were British servants and the reasons behind the colonization. They took soldiers, bombs, guns, maps , telescopes from British to invade people who used stones and swords. Aaa thuu ! Buzdil. You didn't have a country before the British. There was no India before the British and no Hindusthan before Mahmood Ghouri. South Asia is a region like Europe and not a country. It has over 50 historically, culturally, linguistically and racially separated nations/ tribes for over 10,000 years. Maurya, kushan, Aryans, Pirthiviraj, Porus, Dahir, Abdaalli, Ghouri, khilji, Mughals are from North West ( current Pakistan and central Asia). They have always plundered and looted ganga jamuna ( current India). Maurya invaded current regions of India over 20 times and killed and raped millions. Who was fighting with Maurya and Ashoka if it was one India? All of the above kingdoms , including the British had to conquer small small tribes ad nations. At the end of their empires these regions /nations went back to their original phase of many nations separated on cultural and linguistic basis. A french is not German. A punjabi is not Tamil or Gujarati or Assami. India is a zoo created by the British and will break. British left a trained army and RAW to beat other nations and forcefully keep them in India so India stays in permanent choas and poverty. How can you fly flag to Indus? Have you checked with Southern nations that were massacred by Indus Valley kingdoms? Is Chinese Burmese regions of Northeast interested in your " flag" ? They have their own histories, heroes, cultures and languages. British given Indians army kills 1000's of freedom fighters in northeast but only Kashmir is highlighted to keep over 50 polythiest nations inside India united against one big enemy Pakistan and against Muslims. Anyone outside the British created indian territory is now shown as " Invader" when there was no bigger invader and killer than Maurya, Ashoka, Kushan Pirthviraj etc. There have been hundreds of empires in Geographical Hindustan. If it was Kingdom of India why you’re calling it Maurya Empire . People before Ashoka were also from the same land . They didn’t identified themselves as Bharti / Hindusthani/ Indians nor they’re identified by historians Bharti/Indian or Hindustani . Indian Nationalism is a pretty new concept.
